Gun Thread: Father's Day Edition!

FD3 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! How's things? Welcome to the Sunday Gun Thread. Whether you're a grizzled Gun Thread veteran or a gun-curious lurking newcomer, a bigly hearty welcome to all of you! I'm glad you have decided to visit our little online Happy Place where we talk guns 'n shooting on Sunday evenings. So sit back, relax and pop open a Prune Fizz while we discuss our fav-O-rite hobby.

Not much going on this week. Rain cancelled farm plans for last weekend, and I really need to get back down there soon to cut the grass. Again. We have had several inches of rain here recently, which is only going to encourage the grass and vegetation to grow. I have to admit that high summer isn't exactly my favorite time to be down there given the list of chores I seem to always have, which interrupt the serious work of organic tree farming.

Finally, Happy Father's Day to all you dad's out there. It's not too late to take your kids shooting! With that, let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

Gun Thread Pop Quiz!
Q: So what do you need besides a gun to go shooting?
A: Ammo!

Q: What has your 'ol pal Weasel been suggesting you buy for nearly three years?
A: Ammo!

Q: What has been in rilly, rilly short supply for the last year and a half?
A: Ammo!

Beginning to see a pattern? Is a theme beginning to emerge? Hello?

Good news! I am cautiously optimistic we're seeing an improvement in the ammunition supply situation. This isn't the result of any super scientific study, but rather simply my anecdotal observations of the resurgence of email offers I receive from retailers. I am not only seeing offers for in-stock items, but the price seems to be coming down as well. My baseline has always been 115gr 9mm ball ammunition at $200 per 1,000 rounds. I shoot lots of other calibers, but this seems to be about average when times are normal. We're still hell and gone from 'normal' whatever that is anymore, but I am seeing good availability down from about $1 per round at the height of the insanity, to between .60 and .70 cents, or $600 - $700 per 1,000 rounds for good quality ammunition. That is still 3 or more times average, but it seems to be headed in the right direction.

So what do you do? I suppose the answer continues to depend on how well stocked you are, and for the sake of argument, let's say you're either very low, or worse completely out of ammunition. In that case, I would begin to make opportunistic purchases and establish a reserve. I would not try and cure the situation all at at once by making a massive purchase, and I would also not wait in an attempt to perfectly bottom-tick the prices. Rather, set a numeric goal; 500 rounds, 1,000 rounds or whatever, and begin making purchases and establishing a reserve over time. If you're buying online, make these incremental purchases in a quantity where shipping doesn't offset all your savings. Believe it or not, free shipping offers do still exist at places like Ammoman for orders as low as $99 which isn't very hard to do. Now is the time to do this. I can virtually guarantee you there will be another crisis, and it might come sooner rather than later. We are absolutely not out of the woods, but we are seeing a little glimmer of sunshine for the time being. Please take advantage of it while it lasts.

So what the heck has been going on, anyway? Why did the supply dry up? Is it the danged gummint? Are the manufacturers in cahoots to drive up prices? Simultaneous global warming and cooling? Magnetic pole reversal? Aliens?

I happen to think this is another periodic scare arising from current events and exacerbated by the resulting flood of new gun owners in the last 18 months. Shortages have happened before, and with as little impetus as simple anti-2nd Amendment rhetoric from lawmakers. However, when people start seeing riots and their city streets on fire, they tend to become concerned and start thinking about protecting themselves, their families, and their shit. Which brings us to today.

Here is an interview with Jason Hornady, Vice President of Hornady Manufacturing, and here is another with Winchester President Brett Flaugher on the subject of shortages.

So while the ammunition situation appears to be improving, it's just a matter of time before the cycle repeats. What do you all think? Agree or disagree? Are things getting better based on your observations?

First up, our pal Neon Madman has done some load testing in .30-06 and shares his progress.

NMM 1 062021 target scaled.jpg

I got out to the range this week with my .30-06 High Wall, to shoot a few more rounds thru it. I had previously roughly sighted it in with some 165 grain commercial rounds. This time I took a mix of 165 and 150 grain reloads, nothing special, just some textbook loads with H4350. The gun has had less than 50 rounds thru it, and 20 of them are in this target. I was shooting "front bag only" at 100 yards, actually not even a bag but a wood block with some carpet on it, with a scope at 10X. I do need to re-sight it using a real front and rear bag, because the front bag only method is not as stable as it should be. Right now, I'm just trying to get a feel for how it is going to shoot.

Actually, I think that it is going to shoot quite well. The 150 grain loads grouped pretty well, considering that they weren't anything special and I wasn't as rock solid as I could be. The next time around, I'm going to fine tune the scope on some more of the 150 loads and then start looking at tuning the ammo. I think that I'm going to like this gun, and better not take it canoeing with me this summer.

I don't know about the rest of you, but it looks like the 150gr load is promising! Nicely done, Neon Madman!

Next up we have a nice write-up on the PA-63 from our pal A.H. Lloyd

AHL 1 PA63 062021 scaled.jpg

The other day I came across a really strange pistol. It appeared to be a copy of the Walther PP made by FN in Belgium. However, upon close examination it is actually a copy of FEG's copy of the Walther PP, known as a PA-63.

The PA-63 was one of several pistols based on the Walther PP, which was something of a sensation in central Europe. Originally chambered in.32 ACP (aka 7.65mm Browning), it set the standard for police firearms all over the Continent and was the inspiration of the USSR's Makarov pistol, which saw local variants made in Czechoslovakia (CZ-50/70), Poland (Radom P-64), and our Hungarian variant. Of note is that only the CZ-50 and PA-63 had versions chambered in calibers besides 9mm Makarov.

Here's a photo of actual Walther PP (top) with the FEG below. Overall, very much alike, but the FEG's lines are just slightly off. The biggest clue, however, is that it has an aluminum frame. There's no question that this is a Hungarian design.

AHL 2 062021 pa63 compare scaled.jpg

So why did FN copy it? Well, the answer is: they didn't, but someone wanted to make you think they did. Note the overall quality of the engraving, which includes the FN logo. This isn't a hack job, it is quality, professional work - the kind you would expect of FEG. But they made some mistakes. The left slide inscription should read: "Fabrique National D'Armes deGuerre Herstal Belgique." The bold parts were left out.

Could it have been a joint venture between FEG and FN like the one between Manurhin and Walther? No. The PA-63 was entering production just as the Berlin Wall was going up. To even suggest the Communist-controlled FEG would enter into a partnership with one of NATO's main weapon suppliers less than seven years after the Hungarian uprising is completely absurd. Moreover, FN had its own John Browning-designed pocket pistol (the Model 1910) which resumed production in 1955.

Clearly it's a fake. The question is who it was trying to fool. Western intelligence would pick up on its origin pretty quickly, but maybe Hungarian rebels could be gulled into thinking the guys carrying it were NATO-backed. That at least would explain why it was in a police inventory. Because that's how it was sold into the US, being part of a shipment of police turn-ins from Eastern Europe. The dealer who sold this one said that there were five of these available so he bought them all and kept one for himself because it was so interesting.

As to performance, the PA-63 is more comfortable to hold than an actual Walther PP, but not quite as comfortable to shoot, due to the lighter frame. Still range performance was comparable, and with the PA-63 costing much less than a Walther, advantage: FEG.

If you would like to own a regular PA-63, they are plentiful and relatively cheap, being chambered in both 9mm Makarov and 7.65mm Browning (aka .32 ACP). They are simple to use, easy to take apart and clean, compact and with that aluminum frame could make a legit carry gun if one was so inclined. As for the fakes, maybe more information will come out as other people dig into their mysterious origin.

Very interesting! Thank you for the lesson A.H. Lloyd!

Our pal ERF posted a comment on last weekends gun thread, which is worth repeating.

My dad was an NRA Safety Instructor and he shot competition in the late 60's and early 70's. He used to tell me that if you want to cure flinching while shooting, you needed to learn how to shoot a flintlock. Even if you slow pull the trigger and don't know exactly when it will fire, you still have the time for the hammer to hit, the sparks to fly, the pan to flash, and the slight delay for when it burns through the touch hole. There is plenty of time to get off of a bullseye at 100 yards. When I upgraded to inline with deer hunting, the difference in time was one of the first things I noticed.

Although we don't all have a flintlock to use as a training tool, this is really a very good suggestion! Thanks ERF!

Strikeman-Pack_900x scaled.jpg

Speaking of training tools, and despite the ammo situation improving, there is always a place in your training for a laser based system. I don't have any particular experience with the Strikeman system, but a lot of people seem to like it. Better still, it's $10 off thru June 30th with the promo code 10OFFSTRIKEMANJUNE

Last week I featured a YouTube video made by a young woman who is doing a really good job with her channel on firearm instruction, concealed carry and personal safety. It's called "She Equips Herself" which seemed popular here, so here is another one!

Ax Weasel

This week we have an Op/Ed and question from our pal Super Lurker, who isn't just axing Weasel, he's axing all of you for your opinion on the upcoming NRA board elections.

"Who among the current board candidates do you believe should be elected, or should not be elected, and why"

In my opinion, Wayne LaPierre and his cronies have turned the organization into their personal piggy bank, have seriously mismanaged things, and need to go. The only way to make that happen, short of prison sentences, is to replace Wayne's board members with independent members who will clean house. The problem I have is, with one exception, I don't know the candidates, and don't know who will start to fix things, and who will continue with business as usual. I'd like to hear suggestions from other AOS-GT readers on that topic.

I've been an NRA member for almost 40 years and I'm old enough to remember the battle for control in the late '70's. In my opinion, the present situation is much more serious. I believe that Wayne and Co. don't realize the existential threat to the Association and are only concerned with keeping themselves out of jail. If they aren't ousted the NRA will cease to exist. The NRA isn't the only game in town and I don't believe it's been as effective as it could be on the legal front, but they do a lot as far as training and organizing competitions, over and above lobbying.

I have to admit my personal opinion of the NRA isn't the greatest anymore. Although I think their competitive shooting division does a good job, I have never been a fan of Wayne LaPierre. I don't know him, but he seems to exist in a constant cloud of controversy which is a problem. A little of that is to be expected in any large organization, but when it becomes too much it becomes a distraction and makes a leader ineffective. I think LaPierre is considerably past that point now, and on the basis of that point alone, I agree it's time for a change.

I do know a couple of other NRA board members who are good guys, die-hard shooters and unquestioned 2nd Amendment advocates. I have done quite a bit of shooting with the two, and consider them friends. Since I do not know their opinion of LaPierre I am going to refrain from mentioning their names here. I'm not certain if a complete house cleaning is in order, or rather just an overthrow of the LaPierre regime whatever that entails. However, if making a substantive change means throwing all of the babies out with the bath water, so be it.

What do you all think?

8 Agree on ammo availability, I'm seeing a lot more of common calibers than 6 months ago. Prices have come down a bit, but are still painful. Still lots of empty shelf space for less common calibers.

Powder and primers are still non-existent where I am, and other reloading stuff seems to be in short supply. Not much in the way of dies, and the other day I went to buy case lube and none was to be had in three different local stores.

Posted by: a.moron at June 20, 2021 06:06 PM (I5FZ1)

9 Been tracking ammo at multiple sites over time. Weasel, in my view is correct. About 60 cents per round for reloadable brass cartridges is what 9mm and 5.56 aka .223 is going for. Slowly rising inventory of .30-06, .303, and .30 Carbine with plentiful .308/7.62 available starting at about a buck per round and going up from there.

Smokeless powder is now becoming available but primers and brass in some cartridges still in short supply with reloading equipment availability becoming pretty decent.

10 I replaced the factory grips on my Ruger SR1911 with a Hogue monogrip. Non-slip rubber, ergonomic finger grooves, installs in about a minute, and does not interfere with any pistol function, such as magazine release or slide lock. It gives the gun a slightly 'fatter' grip. I haven't shot with it yet, but I'm confident it will prove to be a nice add-on.

Also I'm finding 9mm FMJ for about $20 per 50.

Hello folks!! I do not appear to have much luck with firearms lately. Last weekend I brought my rifle into the gunsmith. After diagnosing the problem he has shipped the rifle off to Savage to be repaired. Now this week I took my Sig P226 out of the case to clean it. I have not cleaned it since I was up at the Sig Academy last month putting about 800 rounds through it.So as I am cleaning the piece what happens? THE FRONT SIGHT FALLS OFF!! WTF?
Anyone have any ideas what the heck is going on?

Yesterday was a description of how bullet shape affects accuracy, tall target tests, and converting drop from mils and MOA. Despite all of Weasel's excellent lectures in the past here, I still learned quite a bit.

I was faster with answers than the other students, and I attribute that to the things we talk about here all the time. Thank you, again, Weasel, for putting this great thread together every week!

Posted by: Duncanthrax at June 20, 2021 06:12 PM (DMUuz)

24 FWIW, don't wait for ammo prices to come down if you need to establish a stockpile. The soaring prices of copper, lead, and other metals is affecting everything that employs those metals in products. If you do not believe me, take a gander at romex electrical wiring prices in your local big box hardware store.

My guess is that depending on future events, aka summer of riots, widespread violence in cities, political moves, etc., you won't see substantial cuts in ammo prices for the near future but see more availability. Good time to start to prepare to reload by saving all brass from range excursions and perhaps buying a cheap starter single stage press and basic reloading equipment on sale.

32 Picked up a couple of boxes of generic 115 gr. 9mm at $28/50, or roughly 3X pre-panic. Also nabbed one carton of CCI small pistol primers at $65 or about 2X pre-panic. That's still too high to stockpile but at least it was available, which is better than it has been for the past year. Still no powders at all beside Pyrodex and still no small rifle primers.

42 Excellent range report for this week. My brother and SIL came for a visit. My brother decided that he wanted a different scope on the rifle we built last year. I gave him one of my Nikons(good scope, horrible company) with a BDC reticle(bullet drop compensator). Day 1 I manned the spotting scope and he got all sighted in in about 10 shots, his first time sighting in a scope. Yay!! The next day I set out a target at 300 for him, he shot about a 2 moa group from the holdover in his reticle. Yay!! Next I had him move over to my bench and shoot one of my AR10's at a square foot target at 600 yards, 2 out of 3 hits. Yay!! (he'd never shot over 100 yards). Now that's what I call a good range trip.

45 11 Scubadude,
Unfortunately QC is a problem for many companies and during boom times in the rush to get product out of the door, companies can often scrimp on QC.

Sig sight slots on their slides are normally pretty tight, not Springfield Armory tight, but pretty tight. My guess is that either the sight's base or the slide cut for the sight was a bit on the generous side. If planning on getting or changing sights on your pistol regularly, I can recommend several sight pushers that do the job. Deluxe expensive version is the MGW (midwest gun works) which has slide specific inserts to put your sights back where they should be. Lyman and MGW also make decent ones as well but not as adjustable for differing specs on slides and it might mar your finish accordingly.

46 A few of us attended the gun show in Chantilly VA yesterday. I made a purchase which I will talk about once I have it in my hands. Because I bought it in VA and live in MD, it needs to be sent here and then a 7 day waiting period. Sigh...
I have two questions. A guy who was working with a dealer at the show had a sweet Kimber solo 9 mm. He said Kimber is not making them anymore. Even if I could have afforded it, MD only lets you buy 1 gun a month. I know. Stupid. Anyways, is there a similar model that replaced it?
Second, apparently there was another moron at the show who we were not aware of as he posted on Gab. If you want to introduce yourself we'd like to invite you to our next meetup.

50 This week was Lee-Enfield week. I took a Mk.4 No.1 made in 1943 and a Mk.4 No.2 made in 1955 out for some shooting.

Both rifles always impress with being very accurate, easy to handle and being a pleasure to shoot. I can hit from 150 yards out to 600 with ease and simple adjustments on the rear sight. Soft recoil, slick bolts and lots of Clangs! make for a nice day at the range.

The Mk.4 No.1 has a star stamped over the chamber. I thought this was unique but apparently the stamp happy British armorers stamped a star on the rifle if rust was found in the barrel from what I have learned.

That PA-63 pistol may also have been intended for overseas commie groups kinda like a ghost gun which the Combloc was known to do to make it difficult to point fingers.

My long term goal is using the red dot predominately and have the iron sights as backup.Still interesting that the sight came off.

67 Hey everyone! It's not just ammo prices that are falling. Some months back I created a 'basket' of firearms that I knew pretty well and began following auctions to see how the prices were moving, whether they were selling, etc.

It's pretty much a retreat across the board, though some platforms are still crazy high.

If you bought something that you're less than happy about because that was what the store had, now might be a good time to trade out into a better fit.

76 61 SB, ah, I understand now. Red dots are more susceptible about coming loose from mounts which is the nature of the beast because of leverage. The usual solutions are either peening of the slide to make the mounting slots hold more tightly which can be unsightly or a new sight base for the red dot. You can also use a removable thread locker, preferably purple from either loctite or permatex because it is removable with hand tools.

85 I agree with Weasel. Some ammo is becoming available, mostly 9mm and 223/5.56. And prices are down from the highest, sometimes with free shipping.

A bigger difference from several months ago is the increasing availability of reloading components: bullets, primed and unprimed brass, and some tools. I haven't noticed any ads for primers so far. Also, Missouri Bullets was down to about 5 offerings. It's now listing over half of what they did before the run on components. Even several for 41 magnum. For cast bullet shooters this is a big deal.

88 71, On flat base, I normally use the Berry plated double ended wadcutters because I have some Rugers revolvers that do not like lead due to the forcing cone angles. But, the old lead swaged hollow base are superb in accuracy in a revolver that is accurate because of the skirt expanding to filling the bore (at least that is the theory). Had some lead Speer flatbased wad cutters though that were nearly as accurate and did not lead like swaged wad cutters do.

But one thing: to get those prices you can't be slowly building up. You gotta be buying in 1,000 round cases. At least that's most of the _advertising_.

Guns are *slightly* more available, too, though it seems (as I think someone mentioned last week) that the used market thinks the prices are still astronomically high.

Said, "F it" with 6.5 and went back to the range today with 3 .22 rifles. I'm toying with entering the monthly aspirin shoot (except those folks have thousands of $ into their rifles) and wanted to check sighting.
After getting 50 and 100 yds mostly dialed in, again I said, "F it" and started shooting at 200 and 300.
Believe me, I'm not intending to brag, but I was getting consistent hits on steel, even though none of my scopes will dial up that far - all holdover. And I was reading the gusty wind fairly well.
Now, it doesn't go Clang! like with 6.5, but that tiny little Ting is just cool.

114 Howdy Horde. Haven't been on the gun thread in a couple years. Happy to be back and now living in a civilized state. In February the noble and conservative state of MT signed concealed carry into law without a permit.
Just received my belly band holster yesterday. Wanted it so I could take my Kimber Micro and a can of bear spray when hiking. Keep hearing rumors of bear in the area, rumors. However wolf is a definite. Killed a neighbor's calf. Guessing the wolves will stay clear but will use the Kimber in case of bear or mountain lion. The way I aim it will have to scare them.

117 Regarding the dots on front sights, you used to could buy luminescent paint for a poor man's night sights. KG sells front sight paint in bright colors and Birchwood makes sight markers.

But, you can simply use disgusting fingernail polish as well to brightly color your sight dots or liquid paper if you want white.

126 ERF's post about using a flintlock to get used to avoiding flinching is traditional wisdom. I'll say this much, a properly tuned flintlock (and not just the very expensive ones) should not be appreciably slower than percussion. However, many of them used to be and the suggestion from his dad is correct.

For some reason I never flinched from the sparks and smoke, so that wasn't a problem. (Likely due to the coke bottle glasses I wore back then. They felt heavy enough to stop artillery.)

This one wouldn't be a passion purchase, just a bit of speculation, hedge against inflation, never know what's down the road, stuff it in the back of the safe unless it turns out that I love shooting it, kind of deal.

That's why I'm a bit on the fence. Hey, it's a SIG, so I know I'm not buying a Hi-Point, here. Quality of the gun isn't the question, either. Without seeing it, that sounds like a decent buy. Collectors look at things like original finish, matching serial numbers, etc. If it's refinished, the collecting value took a big hit, but if the bore is good and bright, grips are decent, it would be worth looking at.

141 To expand on my point: you can buy a gun as a collector or because you fancy them. My C96 was built out of spare parts. Nothing matches, the finish is wrecked, and so it shouldn't be worth much. But...

I've swapped out every spring, re-lined the barrel, replaced the grips and obtained a stock, so if you want to shoot one without any guilt, that's what it's there for.

Just keep in mind that collecting to shoot and collecting to build value are generally diametrically opposed to each other.

Ordered two more boxes this am, plus something else I can't even remember.

168 BTW, in light of last week's thread, Mrs. JTB and I have been going through our supplies and doing some research. We had a number of the suggested items already. The tourniquets and some other gear arrived today. Most of the rest will be here this week. Thanks to all for offering so many good suggestions and why.

One item will have many uses: a head lamp that runs on AAA batteries. The band can be adjusted for my big coconut or Mrs. JTB's more delicate one.

At Costco in the battery area we found a three pack of them by Duracell. The light can be set to narrow or wide and includes a red setting which would be useful for night fishing or using a telescope at night. I'm impressed so far with the setup and quality.

One will be in the first aid kit, one in the house if the power goes out, and one in my gun cleaning box. I really like good lighting when cleaning guns. I'm tempted to get another 3 pack of them just to have around. If I didn't already have a lighted magnifyer for fly tying I would keep one of these head lamps available for that.

187 162 Scuba Dude,

I can recommend Top Gun Supply out of Ohio as a good source for official Sig parts. Good pricing and shipping times. They had some oddball uncommon parts like the Short Release Trigger for some of the older Sigs back when I needed such.

190 179 Dan, part of the issue is that ammo makers make more profit including foreign makers from loaded ammo right now than they do from sales of primers.

Last crunch, Fiocchi, S&B, and Wolf sold primers to importers here. Does not seem to be happening this time. In addition, Remington was taken out of the game and is just now getting back up to speed on ammo production.

YMMV.

Understand that "head on a swivel" will get you additional attention from video security. Watch public video feeds and you'll notice that hardly anyone no one looks around them.

Then go watch a video of someone who is fixin' to be up to no go, their head is on a swivel. This sticks out like a flashing red light to security personnel looking for possible criminal action.

If you want extra special screening, make sure that you look around a lot, particularly checking six.

Okay, I'm one of those idiots who doesn't reload, so I'm obviously short bus/summer school material, but...

What's the point of reloading if all available production resources are going to new ammo? I mean, I get the economy of reloading in normal times, which is fine. But people have been telling me for years that come the Burning Times reloaders will be laughing from their thrones of stockpiled components while the rest of us will be scrounging for flintlocks.

At the risk of being unnecessarily provocative, I think there is *zero difference* at this point between having stockpile ammo vs stockpiled components. Okay, maybe not zero - components aren't ready to use.

Boxer primed is what you're used to in the US, i.e. a single, centered flash hole. The alternative is Berdan primed, which used two flash holes. Boxer primed is much more desirable if you're going to reload the brass for the obvious reason that Berdan brass is a PITA to decap.

Boxer is much easier to reload because you can remove the primer mechanically. Berdan can be decapped, but you usually have to use a water slug to pop it out. There are other differences, but Boxer is shorthand for "reloadable cases".

Hallo there.

Posted by: hogmartin at June 20, 2021 07:32 PM (ghoDT)

250 GWB, the main two cartridge priming systems are Boxer which was invented by an Englishman and Berdan which was invented by an American army officer. Berdan is reloadable with special equipment but is generally a pain to do so and inadvisable for steel or aluminum. Berdan priming systems are mainly used by countries outside of the US. The brass itself has an anvil and usually two primer flash holes and will generally bend a depriming pin if you get one mixed in with range brass and are depriming brass. The Boxer system is much easier to reload as the anvil and priming cup and compound come together as a one piece priming unit. The brass has one priming flash hole.

The older priming system is the one used by rim fire where the priming compound is spun around the cartridge rim and thus rimfire firing pins strike the rim to fire the cartridge. It is not as dependable as either the Berdan or Boxer system and one reason why you should not generally rely on a rimfire for personal protection. Often at a range, you will often find several rimfire cartridges that did not ignite upon being struck by the firing pin generally due to priming problems or not being struck hard enough.

Also. Boxer = anvil self-contained within the primer cup. Berdan = anvil incorporated into the cartridge case, hence necessitating the two flash holes, one on either side of the integral anvil.

Also. Berdan = have to usually hydraulically de-prime, as lining up a push-probe type de-priming tool though those two smaller flash holes, much less aligning said tool with those holes, would be slow, painstaking, slow, annoying and slow. Did I say slow? I meant to say slow.

There was a movie came out not long ago about Denmark's brief, unsuccessful resistance to the Wehrmacht. I think it's name is "10 May 1940" or something like that.

Anyhow, the Danish Army had these SUPER COOL motorcycle sidecars that mounted 37mm AT guns. They were forward firing, and the whole thing would jump when they let loose a shot, and then it was burning Danish rubber.

279 Okay, I'm one of those idiots who doesn't reload, so I'm obviously short bus/summer school material, but...

What's
the point of reloading if all available production resources are going
to new ammo? I mean, I get the economy of reloading in normal times,
which is fine. But people have been telling me for years that come the
Burning Times reloaders will be laughing from their thrones of
stockpiled components while the rest of us will be scrounging for
flintlocks.

At the risk of being unnecessarily provocative, I
think there is *zero difference* at this point between having stockpile
ammo vs stockpiled components. Okay, maybe not zero - components aren't
ready to use.

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at June 20, 2021 07:29 PM

You are correct. Stock piling one or the other (or both) is/was a good plan if you had done it before the burning times. Once the madness hit it was all whatever you had or could get and if you had not planned ahead either way you got the shaft.

Posted by: Just a side note at June 20, 2021 07:43 PM (2DOZq)

282 232 AH Lloyd, I will take a stab at it. I actually buy commercial for things like .223 or 9mm or even .38 special or 45 ACP when ammo is cheap and available but save the brass.

The advantages to reloading are components may be used in several different firearms and cartridges unlike commercial ammo. Thus, having a .308, a .30-06, and perhaps one of the magnum types in .30 caliber will let you use common bullets among them perhaps not at the peak of efficiency but good enough for practice and to go bang. Right now, .30-06 ammo is going for about $40 per box of twenty, .308 about $25. A 150 gr bullet does not care much which bore it goes out so reloading allows you to feed either of these cost effectively. The other advantage is a fifty round box of cartridges for .357 and .38 Special about a dollar a round if you can find it. Given the versatility of revolvers, I can make a load with some powder or a lot of powder using the same bullets with only a slight loss of efficiency. You also get the same effect when using .311 bullets which can be chambered in a 7.62 Russian, a .303 British, and a 7.65 Argentine. Ditto for the various flavors of 7mm and so on.

The cylinder will rotate slightly when the hammer is half-cocked so the ejector will line up. You may be right about the trigger. It looks awfully wide and far forward. But notice that the grip frame is a "bird's head" instead of the more familiar "plow handle" so there may be other differences between the models that I'm not familiar with.

296 The "Headline" gun appears to be a Colt Lightning, a first-generation Colt Double Action/Single Action revolver. The ejector rod is correctly placed, as is the trigger itself. Notice the double-convex curve which is the bottom of the frame/top of the trigger opening. It's nearly the same shape as the later Police Positive, but the PP was an early example of the mature Colt Double Action frame shape, and featured a swing out cylinder vs the ejector rod of the Lightning.

Note also, the stepped trigger guard frame ahead of the guard itself. It is NOT a Colt SAA, but it was designed to keep as much SAA profile is possible, with the newfangled DA/SA lockwork contained in the slightly wider frame.

I don't know about Sutterland, but Duane Liptak (a respected member of the Board for several years) resigned in disgust after LaPierre declared bankruptcy without consulting the Board.

As an incumbent Director, he was automatically nominated for reelection, but when he resigned from the Board, they treated that as also a withdrawal from the election, and removed his name from the ballot.

Liptak has said that he would not serve on the Board as long as LaPierre remains in the EVP position, but has agreed that if he elected, he will at least attend the first meeting to vote for someone other than LaPierre for EVP.

I'm writing him in.

301 262 Costa,
There is substantial difference in energy levels between a .380 ACP and a 9mm. The slightly longer length and tapering of the 9mm allows a bit more powder and the brass strength allows something like 300+ foot pounds of energy at about 33000 psi chamber. The sweet spot for a 9mm bullet goes from 115 gr. to about 147 gr. The .380 aka 9x17 mm, on the other hand, has a chamber pressure about 60 percent of the 9mm at 21500 psi top limit. The cartridge brass itself is straight as well and shorter than the 9mm aka 9x19 mm. The usual bullet weights are less than 100 grs except for the Remington 102 gr load for the .380 ACP. Most .380 ammo rates less than 200 ft lbs of energy.

Posted by: whig at June 20, 2021 07:50 PM (pO7gM)

302 Iron Mike, while I appreciate your certainty, you surely can't be saying FMJ > HP? And 10 is a demonstrably better round than 9. But you do you.

That make sense - you have a collection, so you shift reloading to what is needed. Of course, this only works if you have a collection.

For most shooters, simply piling up stocks accomplishes the same thing. Again, I totally get the advantage of reloading for rare or hard to find calibers and in fact I am careful to save my .455 Webley and 9mm Largo brass. No, I don't reload, but at some point I may - or I may find someone who will reload for me. The key point is that if you bought 10,000 rounds of 9mm when it was super-cheap, you wouldn't much notice primer prices.

305 Aside from cost savings, the other reason to hand load is to try to optimize performance. Granted this is more of a things for rifles than handguns. Frankly, I would be surprised if, for example, Weasel's match ammo cost less than 2-3X off-the-shelf ammo, not even accounting for his time and the costs of the equipment.

315 BTW, AH Lloyd, considering that you have posted a lot about semi autos, it often makes sense not to reload for them as your options for reloading are more constrained due to the action than with a bolt action rifle or a revolver. There are similar constraints for a lot of semi auto rifle designs.

But, most reloaders have a revolver or two and bolt action rifles so it is pretty much a matter of choice. In either case, it is wise to have some ready made ammo and buying on the trough rather than the peak of demand.

Cleaning the M&P15 out on the deck, I dropped the cotter pin that retains the firing pin in the bolt housing. Looked for it for 45 minutes. No luck. Thank God they're cheap, but a PITA waiting for a replacement.

And yet I'm a huge proponent of revolvers!

I get the whole "hand-loaded, tuned to the weapon" thing, my point is simply that reloaders are just as screwed as everyone else by the present shortage. Those who stockpiled components are just as happy as those who stockpiled cartridges.

And yes, I do save my revolver brass - partly because it's so damn easy!

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at June 20, 2021 07:59 PM (llXky)

327 232 ... "What's the point of reloading if all available production resources are going to new ammo? I mean, I get the economy of reloading in normal times, which is fine. But people have been telling me for years that come the Burning Times reloaders will be laughing from their thrones of stockpiled components while the rest of us will be scrounging for flintlocks.

At the risk of being unnecessarily provocative, I think there is *zero difference* at this point between having stockpile ammo vs stockpiled components. Okay, maybe not zero - components aren't ready to use."

Nothing provocative. This discussion has been going on for a long time. And if you are starting from scratch during a shortage, there is no great advantage.

However. (Harrumph! Harrumph!)
-some of like the process of reloading;
-In some cases it is usually cheaper to reload for less popular calibers, such as 41 magnum, or to form ammo needed for Great Grandpa's old gun;
- Careful reloading can often/usually provide more accurate ammo for a specific gun;

to be continued

As a category, lever action repeaters using metallic cartridges. He was aware of and interested in Winchester's Henry rifle and the Spencer. Test fired a Spencer on the White House lawn.

One of the objections by Ordnance was the calibler of the rifled musket was .58 and the repeaters could be mass produced in .44 and .52.

The repeaters were twice as expensive as the .58 rifled muskets, but the fact that some troops bought them anyways made an impression.

Lincoln felt the next standard firearm would be a breech loading single shot metallic cartridge rifle. The Springfield trapdoor was that rifle.

I got schooled from the 2012-13 shortage on rimfire ammo. I keep quite a bit of it on hand now and buy replacements when I shoot it. I had figured out from earlier panics about keeping centerfire components in stock but never considered that people would be buying rimfire ammo for speculation and end of the world scenarios.

Maybe more so since we usually want specific components whereas most aren't all that particular about which loaded ammo as long as it's the right caliber and bullet type. For example, yesterday I could have bought large rifle primers but they weren't the ones I have loads for and changing any component basically means starting your load development over from scratch.

342 Continuing from 327

- Some components can be used to reload a number of cartridges. The same bullet can be used for 30-30, 308, and 30-06. The same primers can be used in many rounds;
-reloading let's you use different powders if a certain one is not available;
- The brass case, usually the most expensive part of a round, can be used at least several times and for low pressure revolver ammo, many times.

I don't think of reloading in terms of prepping but as a backup and as a skill I want to have.

I have no idea what that means.

Ammo comes in lots. It goes out and some will be used, some will be stockpiled. If there are reliability problems, they will be noticed and people will comment on them and other people will check to see if theirs is affected. There will likely be a recall, etc. If so much as one round in 100 fails, people will start to remark on it. If it is less than that, it will have no appreciable effect as people will assume a mechanical malfunction. I fail to see how this insidious plot could actually work.

348 My guess is that depending on future events, aka summer of riots, widespread violence in cities, political moves, etc., you won't see substantial cuts in ammo prices for the near future but see more availability. Good time to start to prepare to reload by saving all brass from range excursions and perhaps buying a cheap starter single stage press and basic reloading equipment on sale.
Posted by: whig at June 20, 2021 06:12 PM (pO7gM)

I went shooting at several sites out in the open desert this winter, near Apache Junction. There are a lot of informal "shooting ranges" out there. You could go out there early in the morning, and police up a metric fuckton of brass, if you wanted to. A set of kneepads, and a bucket, or even better, some kids, and you could clean up big time. Sit home with some brewskis, sort out the ones you want to keep for reloading, and sell the remainder as brass scrap.

Some of those overpressure rounds were stuffed to the brim with a hot version of Cordite.

The worst of 'em though, were slightly "boosted" by some Cordite directly past the flash hole*, with the remainder of the case filled with C-4, which the Cordite would of course, detonate. VERY MUCH KA-BOOM. *primer alone would not reliably set off the C4.

1. .380 and 9mm are not the same. Not interchangeable either in terms of firing from a forearm nor in terms of ballistics. Heaviest bullet from a .380 is a couple hundred fps slower than the same weight bullet from a 9mm. Most ammo for 9mm is 30% heavier than most .380 (115 or 124 gr vs 90 or 95 gr) But, you do you.

2. The .40 S&W is an approximation of a 10mm. You can load a 10mm lighter to perform like a .40, but not vice versa. Similar spread between .40 and 10mm for same weight bullet.

3. Hollow point is not your friend of you're shooting .380. Or through a car door. Or...

383 360 GWB, no problem. A lot of the steel and aluminum cased ammo is Berdan primed which is good because someone would try to reload it. Not a good idea for safety reasons.

Most reloaders that scrounge brass have bent or broken reloading pins when a Berdan primed round sneaks in every now and again and thus learn the difference. A few people that had Swiss GP11 ammo for their Schmidt Rubins reloaded that brass but generally decapping either takes a tool (RCBS used to sell it) that kind of looks like a can opener or they fill the case with water and use a hydraulic ram to push the primer out which is messy. Anyhow, I have not seen berdan primers for reloading on sale in the US since the 2012-13 ammo shortage.

Personally, I've pondered buying up ammo in a caliber, THEN purchasing the gun. So I know I can go shoot it right away, and I know I've got *some* stock for it. It's how I'm looking at .45 for a future gun. And, if you pick up the oddball ammo and never really find that right gun, then go to a gun show and get yourself a trade of some sort. Even the oddball ammo *someone* is going to want. (Or, you can give it to someone you know who already owns that caliber.)

I really thought about the 5.7 during the Crazy (or CrazIER) Times, but I couldn't find a weapon in it that I wanted that was also inexpensive enough for me to purchase.

Berdan primers. Could you drill a tiny hole in the primer, and insert a self-tapping screw, and use that to pull the primer?

399 Posting from a gas station in rural western Montana after an impromptu stop at a public outdoor range Jesse spotted as we were passing by. I shot a S&W model 1917 revolver for the first time and put about 30 rounds through my Sig. Jesse tried my Sig as well. Lots of fun!! Now on to our planned destination in North Idaho.

400 393 AOP, Bunch of people have went to almost ludicrous lengths to reload Berdan primed ammo especially for rare cartridges or the Swiss GP11 brass for the Schmidt Rubin series.

The major reason that most people in the US do not do it anymore unless they have Berdan primers ratholed is there is no domestic source for Berdan primers and I have not seen any sold domestically since the second Obama term. Due to ITAR regulations, it is not exactly something your cousin in Europe could send you without perhaps incurring prison sentences for both the sender and the receiver let along the HazMat requirements for shipping.

410 Very late - nice walk on the bay, spectacular weather, Burke-class coming in was a nice touch, then watched the end of the Open at a nearby sports bar.

But. Powder Valley, very prominent online vendor of reloading components, posted a new industry outlook letter. Easy enough to go read at their site, on the blog section, but basically:

* they see primers returning to availability some time before too long, implication was that it was from imports, which is certainly part of the way the 2013 panic was resolved

* powder - on this they sound gloomy, no details, and on surface puzzling - commercial ammo makers and individual reloaders do not generally use the same powder, and I didn't think industrial capacity for private market was entirely the same as that for commercial

Posted by: rhomboid at June 20, 2021 08:43 PM (OTzUX)

411 369 Another good thing about reloading, you never shoot your commercial stash. Once you get spoiled on your own stuff, you don't want to shoot anything else.

Ammo, firearm, and component prices are a pendulum thing and it's swing back in the reasonable direction now.

I started building up my magazine (meaning, ammo storage point) in '08. Ammo, brass, primers, powder, bullets, and metal for making casting alloy.

I can make .45 ACP or 9mm for a nickel a round. Maintaining proficiency is not a problem. It's a question of what level of readiness you are willing to execute. Yes, there's $ and time spent learning skills.

428 410 rhomboid,
A fair amount of Hodgdon's powder is imported from Australia Defense Industry including popular ones like Varget. A lot of the IMR line is imported from a Canadian powder plant. Hodgdon's 2020 acquisition of Accurate and Ramshot powders has also lessened competition and a fair amount of those Western powders will probably be discontinued in the near future as a result. Think that most of the Winchester line comes from St. Marks in Florida.

Alliant relies on St. Marks Florida plant and its own plant at Radford Virginia with some imports from Bofors.

To some extent too, the powder manufacturing companies are having to use new environmentally friendly processes and chemicals due to environmental regulations which may mean discontinuance or shortages caused by changeovers to new formulations of older powders.

429 Living in CA, a few years before things got *really* stupid with ammo laws, I made sure to lay away a "reserve" in the major handgun calibers, plus 30 carbine, of factory ammo, which I won't touch until, well, not sure.

But I've got a case, minimum, of all of them. Have much more than that in some calibers, for varying reasons. 9mikemike, some extra in case I take some training, where factory ammo is required. In 54R, just bought it cheap/stacked it deep when they were emptying warehouses in Ukraine and eastern Europe and giving it away. In 30-06, have a 500-round can of PPU/M1 ammo.

Fortunately I also learned from last panic, and have *cough cough*, mumble, um, "enough" primers and powder.

I think the VZ 58 is the Vz 858? up there.....since y'all banned the AK they allowed that rifle which is a goody.

The AR-180B's are big up there since no AR's allowed. The AR-180B's are an updated AR-180 with a polymer lower but operate the same, etc. and take AR magazines.

Check around cause the AR-180B's are prized down here as a collectible since they are not made anymore.

431 whig, good info on powder industry. Well Hodgdon better damn not discontinue TAC, as it meters like water, and based on my first set of test loads for the M1, produced my best results. 437 Rock Island Armory makes a dandy 9 mm on a smaller 1911 platform, say, 4.25 barrel

the Spanish Star BM is very nice 9mm 1911 style pistol. It does require the heavier NATO ball but with that load it is a very good pistol. Most of them have wear from being carried in holsters

Spanish guns are pretty. Except the Union .32 pistols I suppose.

A fellow Little League coach was relating to me about an 120 day outstanding order on 9mm remanufactured ammo. Reloading company (don't remember the name, but not MagTech nor Freedom) told him if he could send primers, they could make his ammo. Gave him 1K.

I am wondering if there if Big Army is replenishing ammo stocks. Some contracts are basically "on call", so that has to mess with manufacturers some.

443 We've seen scares and shortages before, but this current one is simple:

People are preparing for war. Not for legislation; they're not loading up because they think we may get bans. They're doing it because they're afraid the music is going to stop and they'll be left without a chair. And this, while the feds throw helicopter money at everyone.

Primers are the big bottleneck with various other somewhat less serious shortages stemming from there.

Everyone keeps trying to come up with cute reasons why this isn't being driven by simple demand - .gov contracts, market manipulation, etc, but it's all just wishful thinking. Wishing that what is coming is not, in fact, coming.
