Biden, Who Ran Largely on Claims That Trump Was a Puppet of Putin Due to Not Opposing Russia Stridently Enough, Refuses to Comment on Whether He Told Pipeline Company to Pay Off Russian Hackers

These hackers are possibly under the direct control of Putin, and, at the very least, are tolerated by Putin only so long as they attack targets Putin approves of.

This was essentially a Russian state-sponsored hacking/ransom attack.

Russian criminals, acting under orders of the Russian government or with that tacit permission of the Russian government -- and probably trained by Russia, too! -- shut down a major artery of fuel and demanded a five million dollar ransom.

Biden refused to say earlier if they should or should not pay the ransom, describing this Russian state sponsored or tolerated attack as a "private matter" between Colonial Pipeline and the state-empowered hackers of Russia.

Colonial Pipeline paid the ransom in Bitcoin.

And Biden now refuses to comment on whether he told Colonial Pipeline to just pay Putin's pawns, which means, of course, he did just that.

Two nodes which really pushed the DNC message that "Trump is a pawn of Putin for not escalating into near-military conflict over 'election interference' by Russian-tolerated Internet trolls" are currently silent on the candidate they voted for, Joe Biden, calling a Russian attack on a US company in a critical infrastructure role a "private matter" and then refusing to comment on whether he advised the US party in this "private matter" to pay ransom to the Russian party.

Those nodes are, of course, the Democrat dark-money-funded sites, The Bulwark and The Dispatch. Suddenly it's not just acceptable but Wise and Patriotic to roll over for Russia!

The National Review, which was also happy to push this DNC/Clinton Campaign meme, is also strangely silent on Joe Biden's apparent "admiration for Putin's authoritarian tendencies" and cowing in the face of Russian aggression.

Also silent: Noted True Conservative and Russia Conspiracist AllahPundit.

You know what they say:

Leftists believe none of the things they claim to passionately believe in.

It's almost as if these vanguards of True Conservative Thought-Leadership participated in a DNC propaganda operation that they knew was a lie from the outset.

Related: Quin Hilyer is one of the NeverTrump maggots who pushed Democrat political op after Democrat political op to put Biden into office.

Now he says, Oh dear! Biden's a disaster! Who could have predicted this!?

As a friend says: "Biden Voters Posting Their L's Online."

But his tweets, Quin.

His immaculate Tweets!

Every single security auditing force and intrusion response organization I have ever worked with has ever made an explicit recommendation on paying the ransom. They *always* defer to the organization to make that call. Pay it or don't - it's up to you - but we'll help you get back online however we have to do it and help make sure the attack vector is closed.

If the US government is advising companies to pay, that's a big deal and, in my experience (which is about 18 months old now and shit moves fast), new.

I live in SC. All the stations around me were out of fuel. I have a huge problem with paying the ransom. Especially because I do not trust that there's a part two of this plan where we take out the fuckers and get our money back. Especially especially when the fuckers are probably our fuckers to begin with.

The only way you would pay a ransom if you're a sovereign government (and don't believe the lie they're peddling this is a private company, because we've never made that distinction before, other than as a throwaway line in discussions between the FBI and the hacked company)*BREATH*, is if you believe the source is being protected by another state, but can't prove it, and can't get to the subject hackers because of it. There is lot's of plausible deniability in a hack. It takes balls to tell them to shove it up their ass, we will find and kill you. Biden has no balls. Which is why he told them to pay, and also the fact this is a political issue. Watch Colonial's finances over the next year or so for an extra $5 million from Uncle Sam (AKA your tax money).

Yeah, I think the arrow is pointed in the wrong direction. Politicians in third world shitholes, this one and others, are controlled by criminal enterprises, not the other way around.

The only problem I have with this equation is, how do we define criminal enterprises? If no one is being held to the rule of law, then are they really criminals? If oligarchs can do anything they want, and nobody touches them, but ordinary citizens get run down on the highway or at church or at home, for gathering with like minded citizens, and hauled away to jail, who is the criminal? What does it even mean?

Under HIPAA I had a duty to follow best practices to secure Med Records... and could not do so under the plans being sold to Doctors, as they sold off their businesses to conglomerates.

Here's my wild speculation (nothing more).

The pipeline control systems were air-gapped from corporate IT and had not attack surface on the internet. This would be standard design for life-critical infrastructure.

And then I suspect that in March of 2020, they bridged those systems (removed the air gap) so pipeline IT could work from home and come into the office during the 'Rona.

Just a guess.

There's a book about the Sandworm virus that crippled container shipping for a while in 2014-ish that keeps mentioning that Linux and MacOS computers at the affected companies worked fine while it was happening, but the author attempts to blame it on Donald Trump rather than Bill Gates.

287 Bitcoin is basically the same thing as fiat money, but permanently limited in supply by design and checked and balanced by a decentralized system. Past a certain point, no new currency will be creatable.

This means that as the fiat currencies of the world go into inflationary spirals, it should remain stable, making it (in theory) an attractive alternative to state-run currencies.

If you believe the global financial system is melting down, you want gold, lead, crypto, or all of the above.

There is "secure" in that it is extraordinarily hard to get to information. And there is "secure" where data has resiliency so that it defies catastrophe.

Cloud services, if designed and deployed correctly check both of those boxes. I've seen on-prem sites suffer all kinds of damage, physical and otherwise.

Especially a pipeline. It isn't like they have to go out of their way to secure right-of-way. Just run the fiber along the pipe. Heck run lots of fiber along the pipe and lease the bandwidth out to defray the costs.

There are places that accept bit coin and atms that dispense cash from your Bitcoin wallet. The problem is that people are using it as an investment and not a currency which is a bummer for those of us who had hoped it would become an actual currency. 349 Paleos (not the dieting kind) appear to be marching briskly into the buzzsaw - another night of rocket attacks at various Israeli targets from Gaza. Ground operation seems almost certain. Could be Hamas is counting on historically common pattern of Israel being constrained by "international pressure" once a ground op is launched.

I think this will be a bad miscalculation.

Meanwhile, Israel continues to take out anti-tank positions in Gaza. (= clear battlefield prep for incursion)

And I'm surprised the role artillery is playing in Israel's strikes. Not up to date on their systems, but they're clearly now using precision artillery. UAV designators for terminally guided?

There are a lot of places that take Bitcoin, probably more than you might expect. For that matter, you can get Bitcoin-denominated cash cards that work anywhere that Visa and MC are accepted.

As Cato notes, there's nothing preventing the gummint from cranking out 10x, 100x, 1000x, or 1,000,000x the number of imaginary pieces of green paper than there were yesterday. That's exactly what's going on with the "quantitative easing" and "stimulus" crap.

You can't do that with Bitcoin. Creating it requires actual work, just as mining gold requires actual work.

Closed/proprietary requires your own cables, which I suppose could be run along the pipes, at elevated cost. Otherwise, you are using public infrastructure (lines, airwaves) and relying on the least-cost derps to get it absolutely right, every time, and taking no short-cuts.

You and I would make the case, and then we would be laughed out of the boardroom when the cost estimates got circulated.

They are largely old people with a Hillary Clinton level understanding of technology. And boards of directors are even worse.

Some management consultant with an mba sold them on automating everything to save money on labor. Which is what virtually every company in America has been doing for decades. It sounds good on paper.

I think you can go back further to the 2008 TARP/meltdown fiasco, where assets were indeed seized with no recourse to the owners, in order to prop up too big to fail banks like JPM. It has been a long slog, and they have been making noises about 401Ks and IRAs since obama's reign of error.

435 pep, the far worse reality is that the Fed is no longer (mostly) run by adults. We've had several bumbling presidents - maybe nobody as inherently dumb, poorly staffed, and mentally incapacitated as Biden, but some bumblers - but the Fed was there to be the adult.

I have recounted here how Carter's last budget submission to Congress was "rejected by the market", meaning a conference call between Volcker, Treasury, and the primary dealers resulted in an instant revision of the budget proposal (to reduce the deficit estimate).

Every part of that picture, every element of post-war adult responsibility and competence (obviously in this case limited to the Fed, and the primary dealers) - gone.

Number one among those "people in this country" with that delusion is Markle herself. I think she really did believe that life as a royal would be a case of "Your wish is my command!" Harry probably led her to think that because he is so entirely captured that he really did cater to her every whim.

It turns out there are more rules than the priesthood, and nobody gets an exemption based on 'star quality', which she thinks she has. Asset based holding are fine when inflation takes hold because they keep pace. But gold can be mined - and its not really all that rare.

Commercial property has been in a decline since the pandemic hit because of urban flight, but residential property, especially residential property outside of these urban areas is seeing huge price increases. Out here on Long Island, you can rent any property to the idiots fleeing from NYC at 'name your price' levels. I would not hide liquidity in alloys - put it into suburban and rural residential real estate, as the cliche goes, they ain't making more of it, and with the mass exodus from urban centers, the prices are going to keep pace with inflation.
