Anime of the day is Gunsmith Cats from 1995. We only ever got three episodes of this, which is a crying shame because those three episodes were really good, and there's a ton of source material - the original manga ran to about 1500 pages.

Tech News

  • The Asus Zenfone 8 is one of the smallest Android phones on the market with its 5.9" screen. (AnandTech)

Though at 169 grams it's just 3 grams lighter than my Oppo A91, which has a 6.4" screen. In fact, apart from the much newer CPU - an Arm X1 instead of the A73 in the Oppo - it's much the same hardware for three times the price. 2400x1080 AMOLED screen with an in-display fingerprint sensor and all.

Speaking of the Oppo A91, it works pretty well. It's smaller than I expected for that screen size, and while certainly not up with the latest flagship models is quite zippy except when you're installing 150 apps all at once.

  • Here's an RTX 3060 with a custom paint job for $839. (Tom's Hardware)

For perspective the RTX 3080 - which is much, much faster than the 3060 - launched at $699 before everything went to hell.

  • The Gigabyte Aorus FV43U is a high-end 43" gaming monitor. (Tom's Hardware)

If you want a huge 4K monitor for work and a 144Hz Freesync gaming monitor and an HDR10 QLED TV with 97% DCI-P3 colour and 1000 nits max brightness that won't spy on you because it can't, all in one unit - and are prepared to spend something like a thousand bucks - this could be it.

  • What kind of idiot would spend $1600 on a Z590 motherboard? (WCCFTech)

On second thought, don't tell me, I don't want to know.

  • Comparing Intel's 40 core Ice Lake Xeon with AMD's 64 core Epyc Milan in floating-point workloads. (Phoronix)

They swap positions in the benchmark results because the Xeon supports AVX512 - that is, it can do 16 32-bit calculations per cycle - while the current generation Epyc parts can only do 8. So it depends on the specific benchmark whether the extra cores outweigh the better floating point performance per core.

If you're mostly focused on integer workloads (which includes jobs like websites and databases) then the extra cores will win every time, but in that case the storage subsystem, memory, and networking also play a huge role so it's much harder to create a specific benchmark suite.

  • It's not Cancel Culture, it's consequences, shrieked the mob as they waved their iPitchforks. (9to5Mac)

Apple made the mistake of hiring someone who speaks the truth:
Most women in the Bay Area are soft and weak, cosseted and naive despite their claims of worldliness, and generally full of shit. They have their self-regarding entitlement feminism, and ceaselessly vaunt their independence, but the reality is, come the epidemic plague or foreign invasion, they'd become precisely the sort of useless baggage you'd trade for a box of shotgun shells or a jerry can of diesel.
Replace "women" with "people" and it's still true. Replace "the Bay Area" with "any large city" and it's still true.

Persimmon Anime Music Video of the Day

I was looking for this one specifically, and couldn't remember what it was called, or what the song was called. The song is called Everything Now which is pretty logical, but the video is called Persimmon and the only multisyllabic fruit starting with P my tired brain could offer up was pomegranate.

I did find it after a little searching though. The anime is Ano Natsu de Matteru from 2012, which is a sort-of-sequel / sort-of-retelling of Onegai Teacher from 2002, and the song is by Arcade Fire. It's quite good, and I'd actually recommend it over the original.

This AMV absolutely nails the feel of the show in just a few minutes.

Disclaimer: As to when the series is set, it's recent enough that 8mm movie cameras are considered archaic, but not so recent that video cameras are considered archaic. Once again, before everything went to hell.

And the 10 OVA episodes continue right on from the TV series.

4 Minasan, kon'nichiwa, overnight denizens of the House of Ace. Indeed, GunSmith Cats was truly a missed opportunity as it was basically badass anime cop show set in Chicago with a smooth jazz soundtrack. I mean what absolute gem and its uniqueness probably doomed it to a ridiculously short run. Oh well, I should check out the manga at this point...I need more Mini-May and her array of explosives.

And good to see you Pixy... little disappointing not to see Nadia: Secret of the Blue Water intro but the Gunsmith Cats theme quickly pacified my tensions.

6 Skip, good to see you are still on course with our Lovely Angels and I concur with Pixy as the rest series only gets better not necessarily for the story and animation but the chemistry between Kei and Yuri is so good that it rubs off on the viewer. Still, I am a little bullish on the movies, the OVAs are pretty good extension of original series. Although, I was always upset Nano didn't return for the OVAs.

15 Btw, I watched the trailer for that live action series or movie you posted yesterday. Without being able to understand a single word anyone was saying: I am assuming it is about girls at a school being terrorized by a group of criminals? And one of the girls decides to flip the script by running around beating the shit out of the guys wearing nothing but a scarf? A Scarlet Pimpernel for the modern age!

17 Ah, I remember being introduced to Gunsmith Cats back in my high school days. Bought a few CZs because of it and haven't been disappointed. Guns, cars, sexy girls...what's not to like? The manga gets pretty graphic in the sexual aspect.

Minnie May giving a guy a blow job using the skills she acquired as an underage prostitute on special drugs to keep her underage appearance? Yeah...a little weird. They showed the act pretty closely, but the penis was completely missing to avoid censorship. Instead, I recall she was going to work on an invisible phantom penis that was obvious through the use of negative space. Creative and pervy!

In the Burning Times, will Anime be valuable trade goods?

Posted by: Miklos, quasi-conomist at May 13, 2021 03:39 AM (QzkSJ)

22 not defending the guy who posted as i only made a cursory look. But when exactly did we decide everyone got to have a say on our jobs? When did we decide a computer and then cell phone company had a world outlook to conform too? I remember the old land line phones, they had no viewpoint. Hell I don't think my Sprint wireless phone had a viewpoint, at least they never shared it with me.

I got my first Apple phone last year. I thought android was intrusive and shoved bs down your throat. Maybe the new ones do, but Apple is another level. I am this close to dumping the thing, and my Apple account. Someone mentioned Linux and I would be glad to hear about the options. I want to be rid of Apple, Android/Google, but still have some "some smart phone attributes" But to be honest, I can live without 90 percent of them.

I am this close I promise. There is no allure for me so it will be easy and satisfying. HEll the only reason I went to a "smart phone" was I lost mine and was pressured into it. I heard Nokia made a dumb phone with a lot of smart phone features a few years back, you had to pay at least 2 bills for one. I don't know if those still exist or if there is a better option. There are a few things I like about having one, but trust me, they are very few. I have never even been close to my very low usage limit.

53 I hear ya Skip. The quest for finding a good dub for a vintage show like Dirty Pair usually is a futile task but everyone now then you strike gold IF the dialogue is top notch. And the hidden power of all anime, even the mediocre ones, is the ability to watch the plot unfold with your eyes alone and allowing the jibber jabber to fall back into the background and ease your mind into a simpler viewing experience.

For overly critical viewer, sub anime relaxes my mind to focus mostly on the action and allow the dialogue to be render more instructive than intrinsic to my perception.

Per Dirty Pair, I think you would be best to avoid any dubbed version but hey ya never know...

Looking on Amazon, seems paperbacks vary quite a bit in price, although a lot of it is available for Kindle at a reasonable price. One of the story arcs is about Goldie, a Russian(?) female assassin who captures and drugs young women to be her BDSM sex slaves, and she has her sights on Rally. And by your descriptions of the manga, I might have to break a few of piggies banks to get at least one manga of the classic series. Damn, manga is a harsh mistress that never takes no for an answer.

82 Most women in the Bay Area are soft and weak, cosseted and naive despite their claims of worldliness, and generally full of shit. They have their self-regarding entitlement feminism, and ceaselessly vaunt their independence, but the reality is, come the epidemic plague or foreign invasion, they'd become precisely the sort of useless baggage you'd trade for a box of shotgun shells or a jerry can of diesel.

It must be an innate thing with her, because she's driven in school and work, but doesn't have a real consumerist streak to spend money, so it just piles up. An introvert like me, so her needs and hobbies are limited. She asked me to go with her to buy a used Prius a year or two ago (age 20) and paid in cash. Good habits to have.

84 The original illustration that inspired Gunsmith Cats dates to 1987. Rally is a blonde who looks a bit spacey showing her panties while having a holdout piece in a shoulder rig. Minnie-May Hopkins looks like a wise street urchin jail bait flashing a nipple because both her bra and shirt are askew.

Kenichi-san is so ecchi ne? Pg 94 of the art book "On" has this dubious illustration.

88 As for yesterday's talk about why I hate Nadia, i remembered i wrote a review of it on Anime-Planet under the same username as i use here. I'm pretty brutal on it and rate it low, but then again i feel everything on that site is rated way too high, and that few shows should ever be even 8 or 9/10, when people there rate stuff 10/10 even when criticizing it.

After reading the review I'm remembering how the show was 49% plot holes, 49% " what a coincidence" and 2% missed opportunities, and that under much better creatives the show might have been really good.

Anime is a medium with a wide range of genres, from very innocent, kid-friendly stuff to twisted, hard core pr0n. However, a large chunk is aimed at the young male audience, so you'll see a lot of what you men want to see: action and scantily clad, sexy ladies.

I feel that the creators of Blindspot got a big chunk of thier original idea from Noir. I know some major tv writer was trying to get a live action version going in the US but it never worked out, so the story is known to hollywood tv writers.

I think it could make for a great movie trilogy if done correctly, as the story was there, but they instead went with just tons of gun battles and not enough storylines or digging in the backgrounds.

Instead we'll have to watch Hollywood destroy Cowboy Bebop by just making it shitty catchphases and bad acting.

Oh and another decent cop/spy/detective show that was pretty fun to watch was L/R Licensed by Royalty.

Just can't deny the awesomeness of the nautical action and the integrity of certain characters like Nemo and Gargoyle that remain pretty impressive to my critical eye. Also, I feel you might be bit harsh on Noir as its soundtrack is very good but hey maybe a bit of softie for a drama with dysfunctional heroines.

John Kerry testified 2 or 3 times pipelines best carbon value. New Sec of Energy (that has never drilled or fraced 1 fucking well) say pipelines safer than rail.

159 "Needs moar Flex Seal "

Is that a crack...or a complete separation of the steel member into two unconnected pieces, held together by other attached pieces?

162 I guess that the definition of "social media" is widely debated.

164 You gotta marvel at the Chutzpah of the Meat Puppet to say with a straight face that what America needs is to invest in more education so that wa can start churning out more graduates in Cyber Security so that some nebulous hacker group with a public website won't be able to take out vital infrastructure in a country that spends more on its milatary and IC apparatus than the entire GDP of Russia.

172 Man, these are cool threads. I just have to remember that JJ's thread is not the first thread of the day.

Replace "the Bay Area" with "any large city" and it's still true.

The Bay Area is pretty special. It has been "flattened", as it were, and people are barely equipped to exist outside of it.

176 Also, I feel you might be bit harsh on Noir as its soundtrack is very good.

Posted by: Lazzari Scooter at May 13, 2021 06:03 AM (YvEh

I think the soundtrack for Noir was amazing, as is anything created by Yuki Kajiura, but my problem there was they only used a few songs and had them play at the exact same times every episode, i wanted more in that area (as i did for the series itself, as I think there was so much more there that thwy could have built in considering the length of the show)

I think my final assessment for the show was basically "Girlgo 13"
