Nearly Half of All Women are Failing the Army's Physical Fitness Test

While men pass it easily.

Someone should clue these women in that sex is just a construct and personal choice and that they can bang out 100 push-ups, easy, if they just decide that they're men.

More than seven months after the official launch of the Army Combat Fitness Test, or ACFT, nearly half of female soldiers are still falling short, with enlisted women struggling the most, Military.com has learned. The data again raises questions about whether the Army's attempt to create a fitter force is creating more barriers to success for women.

Internal Army figures from April show 44% of women failed the ACFT, compared to 7% of men since Oct. 1. "Female soldiers continue to lag male soldier scores in all events," according to a United States Army Forces Command briefing obtained by Military.com.

In the below ad to recruit more women into the Army, the Army makes it a primary selling point that the Army welcomes lesbians into its ranks.

Psst, Army: I think the word's already out on that one. I don't think you have to spend money to let lesbians know that.

Maybe you should also make ads letting lesbians know that the WNBA welcomes them, too!

This woke bullshit isn't even appealing to the left, as it's designed to do.

Lefties are ridiculing the CIA and Army for promising that when they drop bombs on brown people, at least it will be "diverse" people dropping the bombs.

womendroppingbombsmeme.jpg

But I do think that this is about flooding these agencies with leftwingers, to make sure that we do to the CIA and Army what the left has already done to academia and corporate boardrooms -- overtake it so thoroughly that there is no chance of any conservative-leaning person ever advancing in those organizations.

And they'll succeed with the Army, just as they already succeeded with the CIA, the DOJ, and the FBI.

And Republican politicians will continue cheering these institutions.

++++
Blech. This kind of thing is the real underling malevolence of modern journalism, academia, industrial development, etc.

This is an irrelevant question, an assertion without evidence, assigns responsibility and implies a proper resolution, and does so while framing the argument as a simple statement of fact.

The correct way to start this is to ask, "is the Army fitness standard legitimate given the physical requirements for soldiers in combat?" The answer to that question will guide the *next* question, which is one of "should we change the standard to better reflect the requirements" or "does this imply that women are a poor fit for combat operations?" And so on from there.

But they don't do this. They instead flatly assert that the standard is sexist and acts as a barrier - and thus imply that it should be adjusted or removed. There is no immediate evidence for this position, because the key question - "is the standard reasonable?" - isn't asked. I hate modern media and journalism. I hate them so.

create a fitter force is creating more barriers to success for women.

That is a unintentionally hilarious line. You can't expect women to pass combat fitness test for combat! that's just crazy!

97 Here's the thing: the shit you have to do in combat is known. Running, climbing, dragging, killing. The fitness standards we had were there for a reason: they simulated shit you might have to do when its bullet time.

These women should be grateful they failed. It means they would fuck up and get themselves and others killed in a firefight. Now they know in advance rather than it being a posthumous report.

And don't get me started on the sex for good fitness reports and laziness on road marches thing.

98 This is akin to Amazon's problem of AI-driven performance reviews. Amazon built a system to take performance feedback, depersonalized entirely, and then auto-process it to come up with a score. That score could then act as the overall review score, the employees ranked, and compensation or positions changed. They ran the system in secret for a year and compared it to the actual human outcomes of performance reviews.

They found that the automatic system that processed data and graded it based on the same standards that supervisors were using consistently disagreed with the supervisors' actual reviews in one particular way: it recommended fewer women for raises and promotions. The human supervisors (male or female - it didn't matter) consistently issued more raises and promotions to women than the automatic review system would have.

Their conclusion? The AI was sexist. They scrapped the entire project.

Actually, the man was NOT deployed to the ME, while the woman was (as a battalion accounting NCO). She helped guys with their financial problems, last will and testament, getting money home, etc.
She was not particularly good looking, but as one of the few women in town (and married), guys were CONSTANTLY hitting on her.
She was also aware of lesbians that were in Basic. Because of the way they acted during field training excercises.
That, among other things, really turned her off to the Army.
So you go, Army. Because getting in lesbian soldiers will REALLY piss off the straight women in the Army.
And I don't care if the straight "strictly dickly" girls are all PC and Left, the reality is that close proximity to homosexuals usually make straight people very uncomfortable. Especially when you are young and ramped up on hormones. Or taking showers together.

139 The correct way to start this is to ask, "is the Army fitness standard legitimate given the physical requirements for soldiers in combat?" The answer to that question will guide the *next* question, which is one of "should we change the standard to better reflect the requirements" or "does this imply that women are a poor fit for combat operations?"

Back in the 70s Berkeley went on a kick to hire female firefighters and cops. Women typically flunked the firefighting physical test that involved carrying a sack of concrete down a flight of stairs, and feminists howled about the test. Now why would a firefighter have to carry a sack of concrete down a flight of steps, they asked?

The test for cops involved climbing over a 6' fence, which most women could not do. I asked a buddy of mine, a Berkeley cop, if that were a reasonable test.

"Sure. First thing most perps do is climb over a fence, and you have to follow them. Very few have the good breeding to run straight down the road so you can follow them in your squad car."

YD, you just have to go back a few decades. The draftee Army by definition had lots of leftists in it, maybe even a majority. Those commies over in Russia and China and Korea and Vietnam managed to field quite a few armies. Indeed, as one fellow soldier pointed out to me, the Army is pretty much as close to a pure socialist institution as you'll find. At the end of the day, it may not matter, so long as we keep it focused on defending the country from the external threat and not from the presumed internal threat.

For the record, I was Air Force b/c I knew I could never compete with a guy on a PT test...but fitness, I could do. It does help that back when I served, the Air Force yearly fitness test (after you were sworn in and had passed real PT tests at training) was a bike test (and I administered it, and you'd be amazed how many male and female folks couldn't pass it), b/c the Air Force was, at least then, always more concerned about the brains than the brawn, b/c planes, missiles and UAVs were the muscle, not the people...it's why my dad encouraged me to enter than force vs the others (my sis didn't listen, and didn't make it through navy training)...

I've long hated the run and thought it should be replaced for just that reason: the guy built like an ox who can haul the 240 all day is far better than the skinny guy who can run two miles quickly. Replace it with 40-yard sprints and a five-mile road march, which better covers the kinds of activities you're likely to see in a combat environment.

not to be argumentative or take both sides, but there are many issues with the men as well. I recall a few years ago the Army dropped the grenade course as a go or no go for graduation from basic training. The argument was the Drill Sergeants were spending way to much training time on grenades. So many new recruits grew up playing video games and not baseball. It was something the Army did not plan for.

So many units Ive seen would fudge numbers on qual to make it look like their soldiers passed qualification with their assigned weapon when they really didn't. It got so bad that ammunition wasn't matching up with score cards. Now anytime you go to a range it's 100% accountability for every round shot because they thought people were stealing ammo.
I went in thinking my 100% wouldn't compete with the alpha males I'd be serving with. It's so ass backwards that my 70% is far above their 100%. 215 People always miss the big problem with women in combat roles. There are phenomenally fit women out there. However, no level of fitness is going to change their musculoskeletal makeup. Most women simply cannot withstand the pounding your body takes as an infantryman. They will get injured frequently, their bodies will break down, and they will not last long in that role. Hell, it happens to a fair number of men. I was a Marine radar tech, and a fair number of our SNCOs had started out in infantry and lat-moved into ATC for their second enlistment because they had back problems, knee problems, etc.

At the time, to get a 100% on the pushups for a male of my age (25), I only had to do 80, so banging out 60 would be fairer to use ad-hominemly.

232 Back before he lost his mind, PJ O'Rourke had a classic observation about the first "intifada" (rock-throwing was the main MO for the Paleos). Something like "if the Israelis were occupying Panama or parts of the Dominican Republic, they would have been driven out in a day - but Palestinians like most in the world throw like girls".

Japanese (baseball country) were pretty effective with grenades in some of the Pacific engagements.

Germans used the long-handled grenades, which facilitated throwing (for a non-throwing culture). Soviets used grenades similar to ours, in size/shape.

235 I remember seeing an interview on TV back in the late 70s when Carter and the feminists were all pushing to get women into combat roles. Might have been on Donahue or some b******* like that.
Anyway this officer was trying to explain to everyone the importance of strength in combat and how it was fairly normal for a guy to pick up a wounded buddy and get him to safety while still engaging the enemy and that a woman lacked the upper body strength to do that.

The feminist answered that in that case a female soldier could grab the upper body of the guy and another female soldier can grab his lower half and get him to safety.

I s*** you not.

Several years after that I was at fort Benning watching the US Army spend $40,000 a soldier to put a company of women through jump school to get their wings even though they were never going to use them in combat. They called them "whiskeys" because of the W in front of their roster number on their helmet liners.

242 I recall a few years ago the Army dropped the grenade course as a go or no go for graduation from basic training. The argument was the Drill Sergeants were spending way to much training time on grenades. So many new recruits grew up playing video games and not baseball. It was something the Army did not plan for.

It is hard to teach a grown man how to throw a ball.
Posted by: Quint at May 12, 2021 03:26 PM (x/IHv)

1. I'm talking over several months in the unit, not in 8 weeks. The standard to get out of basic training is to make a minimum. It's up to the unit to get the soldier up to standard. Almost all young men have the physical potential to get there. Young women generally don't.

2. That relates to dropping the grenade throw. Women can't do it and never could be trained to do it. They generally don't have the physical potential. If a young man can't throw a grenade into a circle at the required distance, he can be trained to do it. It might not happen in his first 8 weeks in the Army, but he can get there.

250 You have no idea what a cluster the ACFT rollout has been. The Army officially adopted it in October 2020, after a couple years of trials, but even then, it was in a weird, quasi-diagnostic situation where it wasn't required, so compliance was low. A huge chunk of the force hasn't done an official physical fitness test since October 2019 (or maybe April 2020), and no one expects us to really start the ACFT in March 2022 as we're being told.

The grading standards have changed multiple times, and Armt leadership is desperate to have a universal scoring system (the precious test had different standards based on age and gender). Females are really struggling with one event in particular, the hanging leg tuck. The Army authorized a 2 minute plank as an alternative, for just the first year, and recently made it a permanent option. Congressional leaders are raising hell because their female, Army constituents are complaining...it's amazing.

Also, it's a nightmare for the National Guard and Reserve force. Old test: push-ups, sit-ups and run. Easy to do at home on your own. New test: deadlift with hex bar, shuttle run with kettle bells and sled, leg tuck from a pull-up bar, etc

Eh, no average person can bang out 100 pushups without training for that test specifically. I'd say most athletic college guys could do 40 or so on command without training. However, most normal guys under about 40 can train to do 100 pushups in 50 days or so.

I sucked ass at push ups. We had to do 42 in 2min, and I did not much more than that. Sit ups were ok, I think I did at least 65. My best run time ever was 13.08, but that was long after basic. They required 15:52 and I had that covered easily. But push ups were always my bane. Luckily I was badass at drill so I didn't get dropped individually ever.

I joke about that I was only dropped on time, the last day of basic while preparing for graduation. I think I was the only one to have that distinction but we certainly did not discuss it. So we were about to march in our graduation parade, we were in dress uniform etc. The Drill Sergeant says "present arms". I put my weapon at order arms and did a standard hand salute. I figured the jig was up, no one could go the entire time. Man that guy was pissed at me lol.

*****

Strangely, the ability to throw a ball is either innate or you will always look like an uncoordinated doofus. My youngest daughter could swing a golf club or bat and throw a ball like most boys when she was only 6 or 7 - when she first picked up a bat and ball. I laughed when I first heard about the events. I remember platoon sergeants scrambling to find the stopwatch and tape just to do the old APFT and height/weight. Good luck keeping all that crap.

Plus, I fully expect that the deadlift will end up injuring a lot of soldiers. The deadlift is a great exercise, but doing it in a PT test is a recipe for someone to use bad form or lift too much and injure himself.

They looked like hell, but they were still girls, and we hadn't been around girls much over the previous three months.

He told us, "Boys, you know, those girls haven't bathed in a few days and it's hot as hell out there. You know what that means?......grilled cheese sandwich. Think about that"

No, not according to contemporary race theory. Leave your antiquated notions at the door. It isn't about your character or your responsibility or your work ethic or your values or your morals or your commitment to your family or your faith or anything else like that.

It's about the immutable color of your skin and nothing more. You are your intrinsic physical characteristics and nothing more (unless those characteristics involve your sex, because that one *is* mutable).

The new ACFT has a different type of push-up to try and address this. You go down to the ground, lift and outstretch your hands, return them so your thumb and index finger are under your shoulder (prevent the super wide push-ups) and then fully extend arms. Not perfect, but reduces some of the issues with full range of motion.

They had to add "outstretch the hands" because it used to be "touch chest to ground and lift hands off ground". Joe figured out a weird way to drop to the ground, bounce while lifting hands, and then get an advantage when pushing up.

377 depending the the unit and MOS, a corporal can be a pretty rare rank in the Army. We didn't have many corporals in the infantry as I recall. Generally a corporal is a Specialist-4 who is serving in a sergeant's position but hasn't been promoted to the rank (usually because they don't have enough time in service), so they're pretty rare.

Possible, but unlikely, IMO. I've run across plenty of enlisted with degrees, but usually they've earned them while in uniform, not prior to enlisting. And if she's waiting for OCS, she's on a detail at Benning, not in a Patriot battery. I've only known one guy that enlisted for active duty, vice joining for an officer program, after earning a degree (in this case, from Dartmouth). He admitted to us that he was a dumbass when he enlisted and didn't know the difference between officer and enlisted ("and the recruiter didn't tell me"). He joined because he wanted to run for office one day and wanted to be able to claim military service. To his credit, he served a six-year enlistment and turned out OCS ("No way I'd call that bunch of idiots my colleagues") and got out as an E-6. Needless to say, his perspective of the military was greatly changed.

no expert here by a long shot. I was i 11b, the infantry. We didn't have corporals, you went from Specialist to buck Sergeant. The Marines who transferred were often corporals. We had some guy that used to serve in a Drill Sergeant unit in the reserves, he was a corporal because Drill Sergeants are almost always NCO's. A Corporal is an NCO why a Spec 4 is not. I am sure they do it different in other units and military specialties.

The Army has several ranks like that. Typically, a corporal is in a leadership position over people (first NCO rank) while a specialist is not. Just like a master sergeant (E might lead a staff section or something, but a first sergeant (also E is the NCO leader for a unit (company)

As a young LT a 1SG explained it as E-4s in combat arms, especially infantry, were corporals if they were in a leadership role. So the Specialist who gets assigned as a team leader would get made a corporal. It doesn't happen much outside combat arms.

435 (So tired of the cliched "[insert field or product here] doesn't have someone who looks like me", e.g. do you need scientists to look like you in order to be interested in science? )

Oh, c'mon now. It's different with romance novels. Nobody fantasizes about being a scientist (okay, some people do, but they're generally a lot smarter than Tank Abrams).

She's saying that there were no romance novels where the protagonist was a gigantically fat and flabby, middle-aged black woman with a nasty attitude and a habit of running her mouth, who was swept off her feet by a strong, virile, good looking man who couldn't wait to have sex with her.

And she's probably right that there were no such books. For all the obvious reasons.

I had one of my sailors flat out say to my face she would get pregnant before going on deployment again. She didn't last long.

BTW, her older sister starred in the last two seasons of Baywatch and was a Playboy centerfold.

437 I met a couple E-5s while in who had been officers but resigned their commissions. One because he was infantry, got to major, and realized that the rest of his career would be spent behind a desk on staff. The other had been a major and gotten a divorce, and didn't want to give his wife a cent more than he had to.

438 Ive seen plenty of NCO's with degrees who really didn't want to join the O ranks.

I have, too. Just not many that earned their degree prior to enlisting active duty. Lots of them in the reserves/NG, though.

440 387, The rationale when my father was an officer was that Army would have career paths for individuals to conserve training where they would train and become a specialist and have a career path in that specialty. Those wanting to become non-coms had a different path. Same issue as warrant officers, the idea was that a chopper pilot could get promotions and pay increases and stay a chopper pilot and avoid the line officer well rounded career path. Same as the finance folks, and so on.

Line officers came and went as they went up the ladder or left the service, the warrant officers and the non-coms with senior specialists were the glue that held units together.

Posted by: whig at May 12, 2021 04:06 PM (pO7gM)

441 you see some stuff in the military if you are around it long enough. I was a military brat so I have seen my share. One guy was a Gunnery Sergeant. He served probably 20 years as an NCO. He ended up a Captain but we always called him "Gunny" to us, it was his name.

I also knew a guy that was a Marine grunt in Korea. But he was an officer and aviator in Vietnam. The last guy I will mention was a freaking crazy mean Drill Sergeant at my training unit. I went back there the next year for AIT, and he was a Captain and Chaplain.
Posted by: Quint at May 12, 2021 04:02 PM (x/IHv)

At one time the Army had a program where NCO's could get "hip pocket" Reserve commissions and retire at their Reserve rank, although they never actually held it on active duty. Post-Vietnam in the RIF, there were quite a few officers who became NCO's, but retired at their highest rank held. Finally, I served with two guys who were prior service enlisted soldiers, passed over for promotion to major, and were allowed to enlist to make 20 years, then retired at the highest rank held. So there are a lot of variations out there.

Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at May 12, 2021 04:02 PM (BMmaB)

it is definitely not rare depending on the time of service. Even in the 80s the Army really started pushing further education. Particularly in times when war demands are low, they can and do raise requirement standards. I recall of a lot of high ranking NCO's certainly ended up with the equivalent of an associates easily and likely a four year degree. and some of those guys got so much GI bill money it was incredible. Never enough though, they can never do enough.

Good friend of mine started as a PFC in the Army Reserve, got his commission as a butter bar and went active. He was just passed up for colonel and is currently at the Pentagon. He said fuck it I'm retiring after 26 years. He's the type the Biden administration wants to purge. He thinks that's why he got passed up for colonel.

h/t Bif Bewalski, SP4's are the glue. They know how to get things done. Then above that, staff sergeants and first lieutenants run the Army. Everybody else above them just manages.

I actually met in a National Guard unit an E-6 who had been the brigade commander, a Colonel. His time in command was up, there was no place in the Guar for him to go, and he didn't want to retire, so he enlisted until he had to retire due to age.

Cool. Only question is why after being a full bull did he revert to E-6 rather than higher, like E-8 First Sergeant type or even Sergeant Major? Not questioning the story, just never did understand how the Guard worked from a personnel/manning position.

You have to be E-5 to get commissioned. Resign your commission and you revert to E-5. When I was in basic and preparing to go to OCS, all the OCS bound recruits got letters the last week telling us we were promoted.

Way willowed here, but my guess is that that was an E-6 position was open. In the Reserve and Guard you can refuse a promotion if you want to keep your current job, because if there's not a place for you in the unit you have to leave.
