Gas Shortage Hits East Coast as Biden Administration and His Media Praetorian Chant "There Is No Gas Shortage"

gastweets

Who are you going to believe, the media or your car's lying fuel indicator?

Gas stations along the Southeast coast are being slammed by panic buying and long lines amid the shutdown of the biggest oil pipeline in the US from a crippling cyberattack believed to be orchestrated by a Russia-based criminal group.

The closure of the 5,500-mile Colonial Pipeline, which carries more than 100 million gallons of fuel from Texas to New Jersey each day, has stretched into its fifth day.

It sparked wild scenes of panic buying across Georgia, Florida, Virginia and South Carolina -- with North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper even declaring a state of emergency on Monday.

“I DON'T HAVE ANY GAS AND THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA DOESN'T HAVE GAS!! WHAT IN THE 2021 IS GOING ON !!” one panicked driver tweeted.

Yasheeka Wiggin told CBS News that the "unbelievable" lines in Marion, S.C., left her thinking "it was a catastrophe coming!"

The Biden Administration -- which is no longer being fact-checked by the media, because it cannot lie -- initially denied there were any gas shortages.

The White House repeatedly reassured Americans on Monday there was no gas shortage in the United States after the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack before acknowledging supply problems hours later.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki brought Homeland Security advisor Dr. Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall and Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technologies Anne Neuberger to reassure Americans the Biden administration was on top of the crisis, urging Americans to remain calm.

"Right now, there is not a supply shortage," Sherwood-Randall told reporters at the daily press briefing.

Psaki also note "at this point in time, I would just reiterate: We don't see a supply issue."

Does everyone remember Biden's (and the media's) constant charge that Trump was weak on Russia because he wasn't threatening military retaliation over "election interference"?

Well, Biden says the Russian hackers, who are supported/tolerated by Putin, are having a completely private confrontation with the pipeline company and so Biden doesn't need to take any position on it.

Muh Private Corporations.

And the media is still spinning it because they know the Biden administration isn't going to actually do anything about it.

79 If the pipeline company left their pipeline control systems vulnerable to an outside cyber attack, then that is a huge problem. That company should probably fail and the company be sold off to someone who can secure it.

That said, infrastructure attacks by foreigners are also a state problem. I am not shifting culpability for this away from the people who did it and on to the company, but I think there is culpability to be shared. Infrastructure control systems should never intersect with the internet. Ever. If they did, that needs to be dealt with.

But the fact remains (if it is a fact, I'm willing to accept it for now) that a foreign actor did it, and the state department absolutely has a place in that issue. They should be demanding that the Russians find these people and turn them over immediately or face sanctions. Then those sanctions should come hot and heavy, up to and including blockade.

==========

The federalized system is protecting a lot of people, I think.

It's not like Texas, South Carolina, Florida, and other states are completely at the heel of the federal government now. They're operating pretty normally. The problem for the left is that they are pushing their heel down on their own power centers. This is pissing off the gun owning conservatives in the state, massively inconveniencing (at best) the normies, and only making the most neurotic of them happy. The gas supply issue is bringing this across a region of the country that is largely not feeling the negative effects of the federal government yet, almost extending the war to those who have manages to sidestep a lot of the recent issues.

I saw something on this over the weekend. I don't remember where and this is all very new, so heaping mounds of salt are recommended.

But what I read is that the pipeline control systems are independent from the corporate IT systems, or, rather they are supposed to be - but that there is some question of that (such as if someone set up a bridge to make his job easier, etc.), so the company made the call to shut down the pipeline to defend it in case there was an unauthorized crossover.

Fraud having determined the presidential outcome is a fringe freak idea, in terms of public discourse, statements by elected officials, etc.

Would be nice if the actual spadework were being done to corroborate or disprove the notion - but apart from Braynard's limited examination and the AZ audit, not aware of any. 100% serious audits in PA, GA, MI, WI, NV are required, not happening, no prospect thereof.

States can do some things to halt the collapse, on the state level.

But, just to choose one example, something like Op Chokepoint (finance-industry based persecution of firearms industry) has no counters to play at the state level. Ditto for mass illegal migration (maybe you can stop immediate/direct resettlement in your state or county, but those illegals, in their 100s of thousands/millions, are now entering the US and can move to those states eventually if they want).

And again I see not the slightest evidence that the entire menu of degradation being crammed down the national throat is not sustainable, overall. Would love to see evidence of it.

I know I'm usually a wiseguy around here but this is one of the areas where I am serious. Some of these kids would be learning this anyway from their own families, but others would not.

Posted by: banana Dream at May 11, 2021 11:47 AM (bYTQR)

I doubt that. Billing is paramount and there is always an alternative system. I once worked a major systems outage at an international airport. Major systems - including fuel delivery and billing - were down. That can't be permitted to happen at a transit hub.

So they did what they had to do. They had men with clipboards and paper and pens writing down all of the hook-ups, dates and times, volumes delivered, etc. That all went to the accounting office. Once they systems were restored, they did manual data entry for a week. It has hugely expensive, but fuel kept flowing, flight information boards remained up (also manually bypassed), etc.

If that was the concern, they'd have men at every junction checking flow rates and recording what was going where. Things might have slowed down, but they wouldn't have stopped.

That's the minimal solution. Here's what I've come to believe over many years in the high technology industry: the internet is unsecurable. If there is an intersection with the internet, it isn't secure. If it's truly important, keep it off the internet. Internal networks can be secured (it's tough, but definitely possible), but those intersections with the public network cannot be.

The simple fact is that the majority of voters didn't vote for this and are not happy about it. If you throw in real economic hardship of some nature, they go from passive to active pretty quickly. Active isn't picking up arms, but Democrats care a lot about the court of public opinion. The only person recently who didn't care was Trump.

Also, by refusing to prove the votes were fair it cements in the minds of the voters in the affected states that the Dems cheated. It isn't 90% that don't know. It is more like 65% of all voters in the last election believe Trump won and the election was stolen. Without any action to prove otherwise, the meme is established.

Soon you needed multiple passwords to do your job and if you were reading your email for more than 5 minutes you got locked out and had to start logging all over again.

Oh, totally (sorry, ran out to get GAS!) but that sort of availability just reinforces this sort of behavior from these tech clowns.

Although some of the charging stations at tech campuses actually have solar panels since they can afford that sort of real estate. But at some point when we're looking at rolling brownouts in CA again (probably this summer) people won't understand why there's no water coming out of the well. Teslas weren't ubiquitous back when we fired Grey Davis.

To a degree. There's a fair amount of that. There's also always massive push-back from within the organizations. Updates are a pain in the ass. Maintenance windows are seen as a necessary evil and minimized. "Mission critical" high-uptime systems get the least maintenance as a result.

There are also massive operational problems in most IT environments.

We delivered the drawings as required and the government basically said thanks but it looks to us like you are at 50% so we're going to knock 15% off of your fee. The company I worked for did get paid by saying good luck trying to build this thing with only 50% drawings, and don't call us with any questions, but it does teach one to not overproduce.

ESPNs problem isn't so much woke/broke, although that's probably not helping any.

On a positive, we lived right next to a fucking gas station. Can't remember the plate, I believe we were odds. For some reason, it always seemed like there were more odds.

539 TJM and DaveinFla are more likely to be accurate in my estimation. Institutions, people, countries, etc. are not monolithic and what is true today may not be true tomorrow.
Assuming linear trends that continue ever onwards makes almost every soothsayer look like an ass eventually. The usual form is what it true today will be true tomorrow.

Because of the corrupt media AND social media, which is now routinely disbelieved by a large segment, if not a majority, of the population, it is difficult to measure actual influence of these. Right now, even the best informed person is ill informed because they simply lack to the tools to determine reality beyond their particular field of knowledge. A person seeking truth knows the information stream including 'fact checkers' is corrupted but not by how much. That goes for government officials as well. In the absence of information of quality, some revert to probabilistic measures (better) and some use binary decision rules--trust everything or trust nothing.

Yeah. Honestly, if I had been asked to guess if Biden would just do nothing in the face of an attack like this, I would have been wrong. Because I’d assume that while Biden himself would do nothing, someone in the administration would want to respond to show strength both to the public and to future attackers.

My assumption would be that in an administration this week, the chaos would allow someone ambitious enough to step up. They’d probably do the wrong thing, but they’d take advantage of the situation to appear strong.

If the entire administration is a bunch of weenies, bad actors, state and criminal, are going to take notice.

568 There's no comparison between today's cartoonish propaganda, and the media of Carter's day. Real newz leaked through to the public all the time.

But the broader reality is that it was a very different populace at the time, with different mindset, life experience, education, etc. And therefore all institutions were different.

Carter's last submitted budget was "vetoed by the bond market" - the deficit projection was too ruinously high (OK, right there is a fundamentally different universe you were in), and a conference call between the Treasury, Fed chairman, and primary dealers resulted in the budget being revised. Every single part of that sequence of events is unimaginable now, including that any of the actors would even be worried about sane fiscal policy.

Bad/scandalous newz was reported all the time back then (anyone remember Hamilton Jordan's travails? my old kind-of neighbor in DC). Economic news wasn't managed/mutilated/tweaked by such nonsense as "unexpected".

The NYT's senior reporter on nuke matters, FFS, became a key national security official under *Reagan*.

Different universe.
