The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

The Wuhan Flu hysteria gave those who seek power over us a golden opportunity to exercise it, consolidate, grow it...but to what end?

As usual, George Orwell had the answer:

The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power.
Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power.
It is abundantly clear that those who seek to control every part of our world have no altruistic motives; no vision of a better world; no template for the perfectibility of man. They get what they want -- power over us -- and that is the goal.

But what have we lost? What is the opportunity cost of shutting down an economy; killing many thousands of the vulnerable aged; isolating our children from their friends; wearing masks everywhere in public, and a thousand other degradations of our lives?

The insult to our freedom and liberty is self evident, but there are other losses. We will have a generation of children who have lost more than a year of their intellectual and social development. Just imagine a toddler and his boundless curiosity...absorbing everything available...but not being able to play with his friends at recess and being unable to watch people as they speak, and having an imaginary wall placed between him and human contact. That will retard his ability to communicate, and color his interactions with the world. Is it temporary? Who knows?

And that same toddler and his older siblings missed out on the simple but wonderful pleasures of sitting next to their grandparents and sharing a bit of candy and silly faces and napping on the couch.

But what about those kids' parents? Perhaps a year of income lost, never to be regained. That means a decrease in their standard of living, and economic opportunities that can never be recovered. Extrapolate that a bit and you will discover inventions that were never tested by the market, businesses that were never begun, and businesses that failed that could have been wildly successful.

That means cars never purchased and houses never built and families never started and charities never funded and friends never made and the loss of all those interactions that are the backbone of economies and societies.

But the real answer is that we will never know what has been lost; all we know is that we have lost more than a year of our lives; sacrificed on the altar of power.

That backbone of economy and society is counterproductive to absolute power. That spine needs to be broken for them to achieve their ends.

The totalitarians revel in death and destruction. As Orwell noted, they love power for its own sake but there is another side to the coin. As much as they love power, they also hate life. Destruction and murder tick both boxes.

Not for everyone. We have been blessed to have both gKids visit us once a week for about a year now. Of late, we've taken to having "adventures" where we go out to do things like wander around large parks looking for animals and plants to identify, flying kites, throwing rocks in streams, and the like. I do believe that somewhere down the road the two of them will appreciate having had these opportunities.

Where are they supposed to get new, high paying jobs? The only jobs out there right now are big box retailers/ fast food.

There are also their employees... where are THEY going to get new, decent paying jobs, especially if they are over 40? Will they reinvent themselves... and work at Walmart? Is that our glorious new future?

36 Financially, the pandemic has not affected us very much. I realize that my family is very blessed.

However, there are fractured family relationships over the virus, masks, vaccines, etc., in addition to the forced separation. Those scars are less measurable, but may take longer to heal (if they heal at all).

And what this has done to children, especially young children, is unforgivable. I would vote for JEB(!) or even GWB for a third term or any of the GOPe if they took on the teachers unions and broke them for the lifetime of harm they have caused in this past year.

In part, yes. I think the bigger issue (though it might be the same thing, depending on perspective) is its imperfectibility.

These people are, to a man, Utopians. They imagine for themselves a flawless, perfect, static system in constant equilibrium. That isn't how the world works, though. They see the conflict with their Utopia and reality as manifesting in the will and actions of Man.

So Man needs to be destroyed. Man isn't good enough for their dreamworld.

Your comment about kids missing out on time with their grandparents really hit me hard. My dad passed away when my first son was an infant and before my other son was born. My kids only know my dad through stories and photos. But they were deprived only because of the usual "circle of life" -- not because a bunch of power hungry tyrants made "public health" decisions to force people into isolation. How effing cruel do you have to be to do that??

What gets my goat is that there's been very little real pushback on this tyranny and absolutely ZERO criticism of China for doing this to us (by "us" I mean everyone on Earf.) No arrests of mayors or governors for denying citizens of their states' human rights, no sanctions against China, no nothing.

Postmodernism is all we're left with: no right, no wrong and no consequences for those who inflicted this suffering needlessly. As CBD mentions, they just do it because they can.

Some states are opting out of extended federal benefits, requiring people to look for and take a job. But the outcome I foresee is that people will take a job, deliberately screw things up so they get fired, then go back on the dole for 6 months or whatever they qualify for, then rinse and repeat forever.

There will be very wealthy people who aren't affected, and the rest of us. It's part of why they have to destroy middle class savings and wealth with inflation. Get rid of mom and pop businesses except for a few services like electricians and welders that are absolutely essential (until they can be consumed by Big Corp), and only multinational corporations with our best interests in mind can make the right decisions for us.

65 Not just the psychosocial aspects of childrens' development. Exposure to viruses and other environmental threats during a critical stage in early childhood helps the immune system learn while strengthening through cross-immunity and stimulation, providing a measure of protection that can last a lifetime. Preventing young children from coming into contact with "germs" by isolating them and sterilizing everything within reach may very well have long-term implications that are never truly known.

Humans are social animals, and sharing is integral.

Well, she didn't abort and after he was born they did surgery and relieved the pressure, but they still thought he had no chance with his 95% reduced brain size.

Fast forward, he learned to talk and seems mostly normal. He had some disabilities, but his brain had expanded to fill nearly all of his previously empty skull.

I am tired of a lot of things. I am tired of power games. I am tired of postmodern philosophers claiming that there is no reality and that if you think you think then you're wrong because you want. I am tired of my decaying culture. I am tired of the destruction of art, music and story.

But the thing of which I think I am most tired is the aggressive pontificatation of the mewling quims of average intelligence who populate the expert class and wish to impose on the world the best technocracy their towering mediocrity can envision.

The Alpharetta, Georgia-based company paid the ransom in untraceable cryptocurrency, Bloomberg reported, citing two people familiar with the transaction.

206 An accurate abs profound rant.

I'm a math guy. I've always loved math. As a kid, one of my favorite activities was to look at the stats on the back of baseball cards and attempt to quantify which player was objectively better at their position based on stats. This guy had more homers, that one had a better average, this one drove in more runs, that one stole more bases, and such. But in the end, stats can only tell you so much. And not until I played and later watched games at the ballpark, did I understand that the stats were just catching the tangibles of a thing that couldn't really be quantified and categorized so easily.

Years from now the stats will come out, many already have, to paint a portrait of what occurred globally during the pandemic. And they will try to capture on a spreadsheet what can't really be quantified and categorized so easily.

Stats, analysis...they are useful, but only to a point. Stats try to explain what can be counted during the observation of life, but they can't be substituted for life itself as an illustration that it's better. I imagine that pre-WW2 Germany showed amazing statistical returns relatively speaking.....

It has destroyed vitality in so many people.
My workaholic parents in retirement became tireless volunteers, including avarious responsibilities at church and a couple days a week at the local science museum (where they wer required to keep abreast of the latest on their respective exhibits as well as acquire info w/each visiting exhibit). They are social people who enjoy the company of friends and voluteer colleagues.

The lockdown has depressed and aged them considerably. They have been mostly depressed and are not bouncing back after getting vaccinated and re-entering normal life. Worse, there is observable cognitive decline. They will never be the same.

Power is its own end. We don't really need to ask questions like "what do they want," or "how does that serve their agenda." Just know there is an agenda, and that is it: Pure power.

It's as old as humanity, and resides in the hearts and minds of all men. And with nothing to stop them, those with power consolidated pursue it more vigorously, more urgently, and more sincerely than ever before.

That's a dumb gamble. As much as the Arabs have an in-group racial preference, dislike the Jews and have always put up with the Palestinian bullshit to suit their political goals, that all is likely not as powerful as their fear of and hatred for the Persians.

Hamas is Iran's pawn, and the Arabs all know it. The biggest thing I have noticed so far is that non of the countries in the Abraham Accords (or those expected to be in the next wave) have said a word. Nothing. Just silence. No support of Hamas *or* denigration of Israel.

That's probably a bad sign for Hamas.

I don't know who was calling the shots for the left on this, but they got their shit together in a big way on messaging control. Their propaganda success isn't in managing their own people, but instead in managing the opposition's lines of attack.

It is THE LEFT that understands that in adversarial politics prior to open conflict, the purpose of taking a position is to elicit a desired end result - not to just take a position for feels. The right constantly crows that the left is operating on feels; that's a monumental miscalculation. Soccer moms run on feels, the left's leadership does not. It's THE RIGHT that constantly gets hung up on lesser principles, losing sight of the big picture and vulnerable to chasing squirrels at the slightest leftist suggestion. I don't think that is the case.

Some of my poorest statistical days are the fondest memories of my life. Because fellowship and experience can't really be quantified. Neither can faith, determination, jubilation and inward growth. Yes, I was eating $2 frozen pizza, but that wasn't even relevant to what was occurring to my personhood. I was falling in love and quitting jobs, fretting over has gas money and rocking out at concerts, smoking dope and playing golf, living good and bad and otherwise. And everything I did changed me and shaped me.

What can't be quantified is not what a year without a job did, or a year without life did. What can't be quantified is what a year without LIFE did.

======

I use IScore for my keeping stats for my HS baseball team. It does automatically what you used to do in your head (I'm pretty dumb with math. And, well, most things). I have found that the RC (runs created) stat paints a pretty accurate picture of players who have intangibles that contribute to the success of the team. In each of the last two years there has been at least one player who barely hits the Mendoza line, but we don't win if he's not in the lineup.

281 I had this fight with my pastor last year. He would not run outdoor masses b/c they were not "reverent" enough, even though we have a Labor Day mass outside every year.

I said it was important to get people out worshipping together, b/c the outside was safe (and look, I was a year ahead of the CDC) and b/c people needed community to keep faith - there's only so much pixels can do.

He never changed his mind...but now that we can have Church again inside, but it's still limited, NOW he'll let folks sit outside and listen in (b/c with vaccinated seniors coming back, the Church literally can't fit 1/2 the folks who want to go). Why it's reverent enough this year and not last year seems to boil down to his comfort and him being on an official altar...

It disappointed me that the faith gave in when viral numbers were fine and when options were available for communal worship, even if it wasn't "perfect". It got me to "Church shop" when I never had before, and now I'm effectively a member of 2 Churches...

350 Yes -- it activated a mindset that we'll not get rid of any time soon. It may have started on social media, but covid mainstreamed it bigly, this idea that your behavior effects others, so you must always check it against the greater good (and others will be checking and reporting your infractions). No! That's not how America works. Pursuit of happiness (provided you;re not breaking laws), not pursuit of the collective good, depending on each other to enforce it.

377 Power is its own end.

This is a good example of some of what I was ranting about above. The problem wasn't that there weren't enough 'Muricans going around 'Murican-ing and waving flags; it was that actual Americans were easily steered into arguing about irrelevant crap rather than recognizing the real threats and responding effectively to them.

"But face diapers! Muh freedom!" isn't an effective response, when it was THE INTENDED RESPONSE. An effective response to the leftists trying to play games with face coverings is to leapfrog past them and demand eye coverings, and hound them in public for a broader list of infection control infractions. Or to simply ignore it and focus on the lockdowns, business closures, passport bullshit, and US funding of PRC biolabs.

Do we want to win or are we going to keep letting them channel us into (relatively) irrelevant arguments of their own choosing?

After the RFK assassination was over and done with, and they had their guy in prison, people started asking questions about just how many shots were fired in that small space. The gun in Sirhan Sirhan's hand was capable of firing 8 rounds.

But then cops and others were finding bullet holes in door frames, in ceiling tiles... somebody got the bright idea of trying to do the math. How many rounds went into Kennedy, how many in others, and how many in the panels and frames.

Guess what? Turns out the hardware from the hotel had been destroyed! After the LAPD and FBI took those pieces away, somebody decided that gosh darnit, they just didn't have the space to store it all.

Oh well. I'm sure it was only 8 rounds.

415 "Like, after starting to realize normal life may never really get back to
normal, along comes the state-sactioned mob to make sure "normal"
physically no longer exists."

We are outside DC, so would have had to travel to see riots, but what I noticed after the initial extreme lockdown, and more and more now, is how the timely road improvements scheduled during the ghost times have bloomed and spread: everything is torn up to the point of disfunction now, with layers of unfinished ramps and miles of barrels and cones, with half finished bridge replacements looming overhead.
Every time we have to go anywhere out of the immediate area, it is a crapshoot to try to find the detour literally of the day.
It adds quite a bit to the malaise--nothing IS the same, and sometimes you CAN'T get there from here

Individuals will be key going forward. County level is important, and maybe most important. Refuse to obey silly mandates that aren't laws. Make county sheriffs refuse to enforce non-laws. Show other individuals that they are not alone.

472 Bastiat wrote about this in about 1850. "What Is Seen and What Is Not Seen" should be required reading for high school students. He brings out the "broken window" fallacy: when the farmer pays a glazier to fix a broken window, no economic value is actually being created -- the repair of the broken window is taking the place of the bridle that the farmer would have bought with the money. In the former case, the farmer is no better off, but in the latter case, he would have both an intact window and a bridle. When the king hires a thousand men to dig holes and fill them in, he is not stimulating the economy, because the money to hire those men had to come from somewhere, and the economic activity that same money taken from the taxpayers would otherwise have stimulated now is not being done. It is exactly the same thing as repairing the broken window. Government creates nothing; it merely takes from one and gives to another.

Posted by: bill in arkansas, not gonna comply with nuttin at May 13, 2021 11:14 AM (I58tH)

Yeah, that was ruled out early on. All rounds were fired in quick succession, although there was a delay between the first few, and then the rest, as he was being wrestled away from Kennedy.

There's so much misinformation and disinformation about that event, it's comical when you look at it closely. It is doubtful Sirhan fired even a single live round.

Yeah, I think that's true. I'm not sure why it changed, but it appears that it has, and my guess is it's at the court level where it did. It's obvious without reference to evidence.

Why would anyone suppress any debate about the election's validity and pretend it's a state crime to do so (after Hillary spending 4 years doing just that)?

Why would the press not engage in all the usual post-election here are what the exit polls tell us kind of reporting?

Joe Biden reportedly got more votes than Obama after the press had repeatedly reported Obama's "you don't have to do this, Joe" line. It's an ostensible political triumph of epic proportions? So where's all the here's how they did it reporting we had after Obama beat Romney?

Etc., etc. None of this is remotely normal. The incuriosity is a tell. Without even getting into the obvious signs of fraud.

Braynard can "fuzz up the outcome" i.e. demonstrate there can be no confidence in the result via his method of ID'ing documentable illegal ballots, but proving the outcome was changed is more difficult. Based just on a partial review he asserts he has fuzzed up the GA outcome.

I remember him saying he took the job because "the country was off the rails", and he was desperate to help fix it. He meant much more than just the insane, baseless medieval hocus pocus of "mitigation" nonsense applied to an already prevalent and therefore uncontainable virus. He meant the stunning lysenkoist totalitarian mentality and environment in which purely scientific (and correct) observations and assertions were greeted with shunning, "cancellation", attacks, etc.

Correlation doesn't equal causation in this case. The causal factor is leadership. Leaders who have high standards for physical fitness also have high standards for a hundred other important things like troop leading procedures, gunnery, radio procedures, maintenance, crew drills, battle drills, light discipline, etc., etc. The fact that a unit has high PT scores and that a unit does well at NTC are both indicators that the unit has good leadership.

OTOH a translated manga volume selling for $10.95 has 6-8 chapters' worth of material, about 70-80 pages of story, and all the ads are in the back. Currently the top 20 selling titles for comic books and graphic novels in the USA are filled by manga. The readers have spoken.
