Confiscation depends on knowledge. You have to know there's something there to confiscate. This is what "universal background checks" are for. It's also what "red flag laws" are for. It lets them build the list. Then they can do the confiscation casually without big house-to-house, neighborhood-by-neighborhood sweeps. Getting away with it depends on targeting and time.
If you know the cop at the door is there to confiscate, you might choose to go down swinging. If you don't know that and it's just a visit about whatever - maybe a car theft down the street, a noise complaint, whatever (something normal) - they have much better odds of containing you.

Been at least somewhat assured that local LEO won't be making any knocks at the behest of the gub. Laws are now in place forbidding LEO from violating the rights of the 2nd at the behest of the Fed.
If the fed wants the confiscation to happen, they'll have to employ DHS and the FBI to do so. There aren't enough of them.

The Feds will "do something." They will federalize all policing, right down to the county and village level in the name of "improving standards and methods" and "bringing fairness and consistency to policing."

There was a mass shooting in Colorado Springs yesterday but no media/political hysteria. I assume this means the shooter wasn't a cracker. Last I checked, the shooter hadn't been identified but there were numerous Hispanic names among the victims at the birthday party.

Let's go even further and say if confiscation becomes a thing many of those will say "fine, take it." Let's say 90% of those gun owners submit.
That leaves 13.2 million people who are the "from my cold dead hands" mentality.
Sure I may have skipped a step here and there, but I think the broad case is nonetheless made: will .gov be equipped to handle north of ten million people who will be shooting back when the confiscation squads come? I doubt it. Then there are the tactical considerations (they don't know who will be shooting back, or when, or with what) and with that added into the mix all I see is a very bloody exercise.
It is our undeniable inborn absolute right to own arms. I won't ever waive that right.

You really think this is what it's about.
How about you wont be able to maintain your job or a get a new one and your children will starve or be taken by CPS.
It's all good when you have no family to take care of, because then it's simply a matter of personal honor and you can go down in flames because you do not actually have to win.
But when you have dependents, then you have to decide whether this is the hill that they not you die on and that's just a bit more complicated.
You are underestimating the threat here. This is about absolute essentials. And you if you fortunate enough to be able to live and support you family off the grid, then realize you that you are fortunate and unusual.

It's all good when you have no family to take care of, because then it's simply a matter of personal honor and you can go down in flames because you do not actually have to win.
But when you have dependents, then you have to decide whether this is the hill that they not you die on and that's just a bit more complicated.
You are underestimating the threat here. This is about absolute essentials. And you if you fortunate enough to be able to live and support you family off the grid, then realize you that you are fortunate and unusual.

The 90 day comment period before they pass their non-legislative law begins this week. When you can comment, comment politely and deliberately. No names, no insults. When I finally bought a .22lr rifle, I was worried that the required background check would enter me into a national gun registry or database. However, this article from concealedcarry.com [https://tinyurl.com/rf2pjczm] says that "even the Brady Act that created the background check system requires that the records of each background check be destroyed within 24 hours." I hope that's true!

Those on this thread claiming the government would avoid confiscation sweeps and instead take the roundabout path via economic and social penalties might be right. I would guess it will start that way, but it won't end that way. The problem (for the Left) would be the risk of building resentment that could easily result in organized resistance. One thing would lead to another. I can't begin to guess how it would all play out.

It looks like what they want to do nationally is what they've been doing in NY state since the NY SAFE Act in 2013. People allowed that to happen, and it wasn't just the NYC soys. People upstate "allowed" it because all the state's political power resides in NYC.

I constantly remind people of this. In NY, before they passed their anti-Second Amendment fiats, it was estimated over 1 million guns of the types they were targeting were owned by New Yorkers. When the time came for "registration" less than 50k were registered- and most of those were by LEO's.

Refined products from refineries in the Mid-Atlantic haven't been flowing, so current stocks are what they are for at least several days as supply out of the refineries comes back online or more distant products can be moved into the region.

Our grid, fuel, and water systems were designed for placement among a population that belongs in a Norman Rockwell painting. The left looks at us getting our shit pushed in by goat herders, and tells themselves that that was only because the left was running interference for them; that if they got serious, they could crush anybody without breaking a sweat. That simply is not the military reality on the ground in North America.

Hate to be the one with bad news; ATF has been going around for years grabbing hardcopy 4473's from shops and scanning them (illegally... again...). New 4473 has a format change so they can just scan the front page and not worry about the interior.
There is also a rule change percolating through that will get rubber stamped in about 2 months that changes 4473 retention requirements for the worse.
At this point, if you bought anything on a 4473, the feds are going to know it soon, if they don't already, unless the FFL burns their shop down (this does happen). From a practical standpoint this isn't really a big deal, they already know who their political opponents are via the panopticon.

As with cell phone data, big companies will be only too happy to give the Feds info about every purchase of firearms-related SKU-xyz (firearms, ammo, and ammo reloading components and equipment). That is purchaser info - they will find ways to pressure the recorded purchasers about still possessing the items or what happened to them. Searches of the property of purchasers will become commonplace.

It's been a couple of years, but somebody did the math on gun confiscation. X number of feds and Y number of guns. A lot of local, county and state cops will sit it out. Some, looking at you New York and Massachusetts, will join in. It came down to each fed would have to seize approximately 8,000 firearms. And that was before the Obama inspired buying spree.
And when the feds go for their next Ruby Ridge or Waco style raid and suddenly find themselves surrounded a la the Bundy standoff, things will get right sporty

They're not a talisman, and practically speaking you'll increasingly need them for basic self-defense if nothing else. Logistically speaking it'd take decades to significantly impact the existing supply and it's not like it's hard to get a gun illegaly in Europe or the US.

No panic, no talking about the serious impact of the attack on US oil distribution. And the guy sounded almost impressed by the hackers, as he was at pains to make it sound legit, and not an attack or extorion (he used some weaselly phrase about it being 'near extortion' when it is extortion). It was weird.

@290 The call-in "background check" and a form 4473 are not in any way the same thing. Some private sellers use the national background check call, and are not required to make out the 4473. On the check call, the gun in question is never mentioned, so there is no way to define it as a registration. Yes, it does make a list of gun owners, but that is pretty loose.
The 4473 being abused is a very big deal, but apparently we are not smart enough to understand, because it is never ever brought up as an issue.

The call-in "background check" and a form 4473 are not in any way the same thing. Some private sellers use the national background check call, and are not required to make out the 4473. On the check call, the gun in question is never mentioned, so there is no way to define it as a registration. Yes, it does make a list of gun owners, but that is pretty loose.
The 4473 being abused is a very big deal, but apparently we are not smart enough to understand, because it is never ever brought up as an issue.

The place I used to work went with virtual machines for data storage, critical infrastructure, etc., due to a ransomware attack. (we won't discuss the stupidity of the person who allowed it to happen.)
Basically, they set it up so they run continuous snapshots of the VM's, with full backups at predetermined times. From what I understand, the thought is: ransomware attack, no problem. Whack the VM, pull in the snapshot of the image, go forward.

I also know that the Feds went nuts in the 70s, when there was a big push for bartering. can see them tightening controls on money electronically. I think they have to be considered for 2 purposes only (well 3 if you count hunting) - personal self defense in the home, and defense en masse if the Big Luau (used ironically, boss!) happens. If you carry get the most liability insurance you can afford. Don't go looking for a fight. See that guy who got out of his truck with his firearm, got beatdown and his pistol taken? Yeah, don't do that. And the courts will favor BLM/antifa, ask the Proud Boys.
At home people probably have much better chances in court. En masse, the courts won't matter.

I very seriously doubt the government has a good handle on who owns what and where. 600 million and counting. They can't know. My guns are going nowhere. There is no way every one of the weapons in my house is accounted for on some list somewhere.

Hosting company I work with is set up that way. While I don't condone it as a sole line of defense against ransomware attacks, it does work really well. But you still have to address the attack vector that the original ransomware came in on, or you'll be doing the snapshot restore quite a few times.
It is not a sole line of defense. But it is a fantastic final protective fire. Have restored snapshots more than once because of less than hygienic users.
