The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Say my name!

My name is Confiscation, and any rational analysis of current and proposed legislation that increases the reporting and registration requirements for firearms has one goal, and that is to create a database for the jack-booted thugs of government to take our guns. The undeniable fact is that gun owners who obey the law are a vanishingly small percentage of the people who subsequently misuse guns. So why are they being tracked and numbered and photographed and fingerprinted and undoubtedly entered into a vast dystopian database?

The answer can be found in other countries and in other times, some of which ended rather badly for a lot of people. And the tired arguments from the Democrats -- or should I just call them what they are: socialists -- that confiscation isn't the goal, is arrant nonsense based on the reality of current attempts to modify the law. Red Flag laws, ammunition purchase records, lists of "restricted" firearms, magazine restrictions and so much more, all point to the first step, which is regulatory confiscation. If the regulations are so byzantine and difficult, some people will be deterred from purchasing, some people will fall outside the law through no fault of their own, and the number of legal purchases will shrink.

The next step...outright confiscation...will be much easier to begin when the vast majority of weapons are registered (or on some list easily accessible to the government), or if not on a list, possessed by someone who also owns a registered (or listed) weapon.

The only question is: Will Americans tolerate gun confiscation?

Some will; of that I have no doubt. The casual gun owner, the new purchasers who bought because they are scared of civil unrest? Sure. But what of the life-long gun owners and the many Americans who see guns as an extension of their natural rights? They will be less apt meekly to answer the 3:00am knock on the door and hand over their guns to the local cops. It is among those people that confiscation is problematic, and when it gets sporty, as it absolutely will, we will see the true character of America, and whether the spirit of our founding still lives

9 Confiscation depends on knowledge. You have to know there's something there to confiscate. This is what "universal background checks" are for. It's also what "red flag laws" are for. It lets them build the list. Then they can do the confiscation casually without big house-to-house, neighborhood-by-neighborhood sweeps. Getting away with it depends on targeting and time.

If you know the cop at the door is there to confiscate, you might choose to go down swinging. If you don't know that and it's just a visit about whatever - maybe a car theft down the street, a noise complaint, whatever (something normal) - they have much better odds of containing you.

23 I love the euphemism they use for this, too: "mandatory buyback."

It is hard to create a less possible and more Orwellian phrase. It isn't a "buyback" because you didn't buy it from the state. And if it's "mandatory" then it isn't a sale. There cannot be a trade without consent, and you can't mandate consent.

It's perfectly perverse, and accomplishes that in a mere two words. It's astonishingly efficient.

"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If... if... We didn't love freedom enough. And even more - we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward."

Yet. This ties in to the "abolish the police" stuff. As the chaos and criminality grows in the absence of even marginally effective policing, there will be increasingly loud calls for somebody to do something.

The Feds will "do something." They will federalize all policing, right down to the county and village level in the name of "improving standards and methods" and "bringing fairness and consistency to policing."

When they finish, *all* cops will be feds.

Bill O'Reilly thought registration was fine ... no problem. And as with communism, sure it is fine, as long as we have pure-minded, near perfect people running all aspects of government. But of course the whole point of a Bill of Rights was to guard against the evil ones confiscating our government, and using the "law" against us.

"Can the law, with force as its necessary sanction, be reasonably employed for anything other than ensuring everyone their right? I challenge anyone to cause it to step outside this sphere without turning it upside down it and consequently without turning the use of force against (what is) right. Posted by: sniffybigtoe at May 11, 2021 10:16 AM (UuD2k)

77 I believe gun confiscation is the biggest reason the Progs want five RBG-thought clones on the Supreme Court. A micro-second after a fifth RBG-type is sworn-in, one of the Big Blue states will enact a ban on individual gun ownership, knowing it will eventually be challenged up to SCOTUS. RBG-type majority SCOTUS will rule the Second Amendment says only government-regulated militias can keep and bear arms, not individuals.

The it's game-on for confiscation from individuals. Amend the Constitution? It's easy for the Progs: Get SCOTUS to do it!

78 >>>46 The Feds will "do something." They will federalize all policing

It won't be local police. It will be the feds. Two reasons why. 1. Most cops really like their guns and know they will not be immune. 2. Many city cops are dullards - like me - and they would rather have the "elite" do the confiscations.

Where I live, the county has declared itself a 2nd Amendment sanctuary. I don't believe our county sheriff will come after guns.
But what Joe said is the next likely outcome. All law enforcement will be federalized. They aren't playing beanbag here.

Be prepared to hide your weapons and ammo. Find a good place that will not necessarily show up with a metal detector. If we wait this out, I think eventually that things will change. Eventually.

147 I think running the numbers might be useful.

I've seen estimated that between 40-50% of the population has at least one gun. Let's take the low end. 40%. With an estimated 330 million people, that's 132 million people.

Let's go even further and say if confiscation becomes a thing many of those will say "fine, take it." Let's say 90% of those gun owners submit.

That leaves 13.2 million people who are the "from my cold dead hands" mentality.

Sure I may have skipped a step here and there, but I think the broad case is nonetheless made: will .gov be equipped to handle north of ten million people who will be shooting back when the confiscation squads come? I doubt it. Then there are the tactical considerations (they don't know who will be shooting back, or when, or with what) and with that added into the mix all I see is a very bloody exercise.

It is our undeniable inborn absolute right to own arms. I won't ever waive that right.

"I think we will see a significant group of people fail to comply and possibly take action to dissuade the government from that course of action."

yes, any real resistance (by citizens younger than me) will have to go on the offensive against the tyrants, not wait for the dawn raid, after refusing to comply with confiscation. But if they go slow, and ID/harass/incarcerate the likely rebel leaders before confiscation, any resistance would be ragtag ... it should have begun already, but we still hope those White Hats will save us.

You really think this is what it's about.

How about you wont be able to maintain your job or a get a new one and your children will starve or be taken by CPS.

It's all good when you have no family to take care of, because then it's simply a matter of personal honor and you can go down in flames because you do not actually have to win.

But when you have dependents, then you have to decide whether this is the hill that they not you die on and that's just a bit more complicated.

You are underestimating the threat here. This is about absolute essentials. And you if you fortunate enough to be able to live and support you family off the grid, then realize you that you are fortunate and unusual.

178 Confiscation isn't going to force the issue; what will kick it off is going after people's kids, kicking in doors over facebook posts, and yanking people's bank accounts/crypto wallets/ability to fly.

They have this back-burner, going-through-the-motions notion of rounding up registered arms or arm owners, but for the most part the current plan is to ignite conflict in one of two ways - either prompting us into something that can be construed by the media as an over-extension followed by a period of crushing us with military hardware outright, or deciding that the time is right to use up antifa/BLM in a sort of Tet re-run.

Their opponents aren't going to escape this just because they don't have firearms; the net will be cast wider than that.

Meanwhile, Israel is again under rocket attack, Iran boats swarming US warships, the east coast is running out of gasoline and the administration is fine with it(private company matter), the stock market is tanking, inflation looming on the horizon, citizens being held in jail in solitary confinement before trial, and mobs being allowed to take over sections of cities and declare them no go zones without penalty.

225 Those on this thread claiming the government would avoid confiscation sweeps and instead take the roundabout path via economic and social penalties might be right. I would guess it will start that way, but it won't end that way. The problem (for the Left) would be the risk of building resentment that could easily result in organized resistance. One thing would lead to another. I can't begin to guess how it would all play out.

Private gun ownership is an enumerated constitutional right. Defending those God-given rights is a mission many of us would fight and die for. The big question is if those who would take those rights are equally committed.

This is just one of the reasons I dropped most news coverage in the late 90s. It was readily apparent to people growing up in small population states that there was no need to watch the news since it never even tried to cover your part of the world unless it was some sensational story. Even then the news teams parachuted in to cover the story had the story already written and just needed some sound bites and a few local scenery shots.

Hate to be the one with bad news; ATF has been going around for years grabbing hardcopy 4473's from shops and scanning them (illegally... again...). New 4473 has a format change so they can just scan the front page and not worry about the interior.

There is also a rule change percolating through that will get rubber stamped in about 2 months that changes 4473 retention requirements for the worse.

At this point, if you bought anything on a 4473, the feds are going to know it soon, if they don't already, unless the FFL burns their shop down (this does happen). From a practical standpoint this isn't really a big deal, they already know who their political opponents are via the panopticon.

The gun-grabbers will turn to the commercial sector to get the purchaser info. As with cell phone data, big companies will be only too happy to give the Feds info about every purchase of firearms-related SKU-xyz (firearms, ammo, and ammo reloading components and equipment). That is purchaser info - they will find ways to pressure the recorded purchasers about still possessing the items or what happened to them. Searches of the property of purchasers will become commonplace.

Listned to NPR during errands this a.m. and they interviewed some dude about the cyber attacks/data ransom operations. It was all quite calm and detached as he explained that they don;t necessarily want destroy the businesses they target, they just want their profits (i.e. the ransom payment), and they have professional systems, such as customer service reps and payment processing options.

No panic, no talking about the serious impact of the attack on US oil distribution. And the guy sounded almost impressed by the hackers, as he was at pains to make it sound legit, and not an attack or extorion (he used some weaselly phrase about it being 'near extortion' when it is extortion). It was weird.

The 4473 being abused is a very big deal, but apparently we are not smart enough to understand, because it is never ever brought up as an issue.

371 The call-in "background check" and a form 4473 are not in any way the same thing. Some private sellers use the national background check call, and are not required to make out the 4473. False equivalence is a fallacy. The two issues, private gun ownership and abortion, do not intersect or compare. Private gun ownership is an enumerated, plainly stated constitutional right. The right to life is equally clearly stated in the Declaration of Independence and could thus be argued to be implicit in the Constitution, but that reasoning didn't hold up against Roe v. Wade. Nothing could, frankly. Roe v. Wade is so poorly constructed it can't be argued against. It's like fighting smoke with a hammer.

390 Masks and privately owned guns, not a very good or interesting comparison.

Almost all masks provide little to no benefit in preventing virus transmission. And the virus is prevalent, widespread, reasonably assumed to be just about everywhere (which is why, duh, all the "mitigation" nonsense makes no sense and is not supported in any science or a century's observations).

A firearm that is available, whose owner knows how to use it, and which has ammo most definitely can provide protection against what are generally very improbable threats that occur rarely, like home invasions.

But a firearm definitely could provide peace of mind in some situations. Unlike masks, however, this assurance would have at least some basis in reality.

I think to some extent, yes. Ceteris paribus, I'd prefer to die quietly in bed surrounded by loved ones - not in a pile of spent brass. But the ceteris is not paribus.

I think they have to be considered for 2 purposes only (well 3 if you count hunting) - personal self defense in the home, and defense en masse if the Big Luau (used ironically, boss!) happens. If you carry get the most liability insurance you can afford. Don't go looking for a fight. See that guy who got out of his truck with his firearm, got beatdown and his pistol taken? Yeah, don't do that. And the courts will favor BLM/antifa, ask the Proud Boys.

At home people probably have much better chances in court. En masse, the courts won't matter.

423 I very seriously doubt the government has a good handle on who owns what and where. 600 million and counting. They can't know. My guns are going nowhere. There is no way every one of the weapons in my house is accounted for on some list somewhere.

Posted by: USNtakim

Since guns don't go "bad" how many pre-68 guns do you think are still out there?
(Pre-68, meaning you could buy them and have them mailed to your home without filling out a form)

424 Hosting company I work with is set up that way. While I don't condone it as a sole line of defense against ransomware attacks, it does work really well. But you still have to address the attack vector that the original ransomware came in on, or you'll be doing the snapshot restore quite a few times.

It is not a sole line of defense. But it is a fantastic final protective fire. Have restored snapshots more than once because of less than hygienic users.

Oh yeah, the attack vector always needs to be addressed, but, usually, it happens because someone with elevated privileges clicks on something they shouldn't have.

426 The place I used to work went with virtual machines
for data storage, critical infrastructure, etc., due to a ransomware
attack. (we won't discuss the stupidity of the person who allowed it to
happen.)

We had a dude log into a server in the DC as the Admin account (purchased company, so.....) and log into his webmail account. The ransomwear locked SQL, Exchange and backup servers........

Basically, they set it up so they run continuous snapshots of the VM's, with full backups at predetermined times. From what I understand, the thought is: ransomware attack, no problem. Whack the VM, pull in the snapshot of the image, go forward.
Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing at May 11, 2021 11:15 AM (2SdPm)

Yep. Ransomware attack mitigation 101. The fact that this is an ongoing situation and the whole thing hasn't been resolved already and we didn't find out it even happened for 6 months because some sort of new techniques have been employed is very concerning.

Very.

It isn't happening because the company's IT department doesn't know about air gaps.

Yet nobody but a few crazy abolitionists will do anything to try to stop it.

No, but, I'll bet the IT department was ordered to allow access privileges to someone they knew shouldn't have that kind of access.

436 "There is no way every one of the weapons in my house is accounted for on some list somewhere."

Sir, I need to you list all the weapons in your house. Once you hand me a complete list, I'm sure the Courts will give you custody of you kid again.

Are you sure that's all of them? Because if we sweep back through here and find a firearm, your boy will grow up in an orphanage, or worse.

Take your time, let us know when finished making our list.

439 @Red Turban
An economist named Campbell from Indiana University wrote a paper where he argued that the USSR's collapse was inevitable because the Politburo had no idea what was going on in the country, and hence was massively misallocating resources. Collective Farm No. 17 would tell Moscow their capacity for production was 2000 kilos of potatoes, so their quota would be 2000 and they would report to Moscow that they grew 2000, but they would actually grow 5000 and trade the extra off-the-books potatoes with Tractor Factory No. 45 for spare parts they produced off the books, and have an illegal vodka still, and then trade the vodka with Refinery No. 30 for extra diesel that didn't exist, as far as Moscow knew. There was so much of this that the shadow economy actually kept the country going, because the centrally planned economy had never worked.

442 Yes, but citizens pundits, politicians and advocates need to stop presenting the 2nd amendment as a right to protect ourselves from other citizens - it is not - it is to protect citizens from a tyrannical government; how do we know our government is tyrannical? It wants to register and confiscate people's guns.

If politicians, federal officers and bureaucrats who take an oath to defend the constitution from foreign and domestic attacks are openly anti-constitution ("No Amendment is absolute..." from the Chief Law Enforcement Officer Joe Biden.) you know from your own lying eyes we are facing a tyrannical government. Disband them all is what I say.

Hint: you want to send a message? Use all you stimulus money to buy as many "Ghost guns" and ammunition as you can! Nothing terrifies politicians when the people use money approved by politicians to buy guns which "might be used" against them.

Posted by: The Party of Hell No! at May 11, 2021 11:53 AM (ROZHE)

443 134 They won't confiscate the guns. They will cancel your ponzi scheme checks ala social security, medicare/medicaid, "student" loans, and what not then your deny access to banking, fakebook and the like.

Which is why I am counting on the trillions in spending to collapse the economy. At that point we can go about the business of restoring order and purging the leftists.

Sadly no. Then the excuse will be that we have nothing left to fight for so...go along to get along. I need to keep my Amazon commission, he needs his boy to get into that elite private school, she needs to keep that rent controlled apartment for her mother.

We have prominent conservative "thought leaders" that can't even give up Facebook or the NFL. If they were to be turned into a pillar of salt, they wouldn't make it past the gates of Gomorrah without looking back with longing...

447 "False equivalence is a fallacy. The two issues, private gun ownership and abortion, do not intersect or compare... that reasoning didn't hold up against Roe v. Wade. Nothing could, frankly. Roe v. Wade is so poorly constructed it can't be argued against"

You circled back to make his argument. There will be a Roe V Wade version for firearms. And the same logic that allows the law to check you re abortion will check you re gun control.
