Morning Rant - Special Guest Ranter [Weasel]

monkey 2 scaled.jpg

I do a fair amount of highway driving, and for the most part do not mind it. I'm content to hop in the car, turn on the radio, and watch the world go rolling past the window for hours at a time. There is one thing with driving, however, that excites me nearly to rage and that is the self-appointed enforcer of the speed limit occupying the left hand lane. Traffic can be moving smoothly at 80 mph, yet there is one guy who steadfastly maintains 55 mph in the passing lane. This guy doesn't care that he's going to cause a pile-up at some point, because he's going the speed limit, and that's that. He sure as hell isn't going to move to the slower lanes, because he has as much right to the road as anyone, especially those non-conforming speeders. In fact, how dare they speed? He obeys the posted limit, and so should everyone else.

Much of the left's behavior is patterned on this very same principle. They decide what behavior is correct and seek to impose their views and opinions on everyone else, regardless of consequences. The left is not content to stay in their lane and mind their own business. Instead they must forever loudly espouse their views and dictate the terms and conditions of society upon the rest of us. They do not abide differences of action and opinion, but rather appoint themselves judge and jury in every conceivable circumstance. They see any variability of viewpoint as a personal insult.

This is irrational and unrealistic behavior, and makes about as much sense as finding fault with someone's favorite color or choice in music. Yet this is our brave new reality, where only absolute adherence to the party line is tolerated. The danger of dealing with people like this is they tolerate no dissent, and will stop at nothing to see their worldview accepted, eventually through use of force if necessary.

I was at one point hopeful we would awake from our national nightmare with a bad hangover and get back to something approaching reasonable societal conduct. Conduct where people manage their own lives as they see fit, and not attempt to manage the lives of everyone else. Holding whatever values they cherish closely, and respecting the opinions of others.

I am no longer so hopeful.

33 I usually drive at the posted speed limit at all times, but I also steadfastly stay in the slow lane - I wouldn't think of blocking the passing lanes. My Subaru's a four-cylinder, and driving at 80+ is a big ask anyway, so I'd be asking for trouble by flooring it.

Your analogy, while illustrative regarding our current predicament, can also work both ways. In a world where all the bad guys are speeding toward socialism at 90 mph, it would behoove us to travel at 55 to get the pile-up started sooner rather than later.

This is known.

Yesterday I was cruising along at a nice pace, and decided to be a nice guy and let the vehicle in front of me pass the slow moving truck first.

So he hops in the left lane, then I hop in the left lane. Suddenly I guess he decides he doesn't like me on his tail, and slows down to keep pace with the truck. Then slams on his brakes. As he moves past the truck, he puts his window down and gives ME the finger!

I have a nice move I make, where I pass you and come WAAAAAY too close to your front bumper. You either get the message or you don't. And if I do see you outside your vehicle, I will strangle the life out of you with my bare hands. Count on it.

55 Something that also annoys me is the people that can't wait for you to get out of the passing lane. Going above the speed limit and in a high traffic shifting area, and I don't want to have to get off the gas behind the upcoming slow car so jackasses can blow by me 30 seconds faster. Or I'm finally past the slow cars and before I can turn on my blinker the prick behind is getting into the middle lane to pass me, and now I can't get over to let the other cars by as more assholes do the same thing. Some now three or four back.

Posted by: Buzzion at May 10, 2021 10:11 AM (G2zl5)

56 The only time I hang out in the left lane is to pass someone going 55 in the right hand lane. But while passing them, if I'm not doing 90mph i get a-holes up my ass until i complete the pass, which may take a little time due to heavy traffic.

Posted by: callsign claymore at May 10, 2021 10:12 AM (79CQe)

61 I drive highways mostly into work. The main one is 3 lane so generally never have to worry about this. The other is 2 lane so that can have this problem. I always use cruise control set at 8-9 mph above 65-70 limit. So I approach some dude going slightly slower than me, I change lanes, and he speeds up! Then I get behind him and he slows down. Repeat.

Recently however the issue is all those roads are under construction and the speed "suggestion" signs are all changed to 55. So I'm going 64 but people still go the same higher speed. No matter I stay in the right lane and it doesn't bother me.

There's actually a law in GA where if a car can overtake you in the right lane and you haven't given way you can get a ticket. But no traffic laws are ever enforced to the degree that people would actually follow them here.

I've gotten to the point where I've been behind way too many trucks that decide that the best time to get ahead of the truck ahead of them in the right lane is near the bottom of a hill, taking several minutes to eventually get past that one truck a few miles down the road. During this time, they've collected dozens of cars behind them waiting for the truck to move back into the right lane.

It's to the point where I think it should be illegal for 18 wheelers to be in the left lane on a two lane highway.

I'm doing 78 in this lane because I'm passing the clot of cars happily doing 65 behind the trucks, and I'll be over in front of them as soon as that's done. If we had self-driving cars with vehicle-to-vehicle communication and coordination, we would be able to increase average speeds by 50% and reduce stoplight delays by predictably weaving cross-traffic together. The best answer is smart, self-driving cars that check in with everyone around them and the primary centralized systems. To improve traffic, we need to get rid of drivers entirely.

The mask controversies all over America are a good examples, the Americans who feel most strongly everyone should use a mask all the time (even exercising outside!) are also the people most resistant to learning facts about mask effectiveness. AGW is another example; it is a religion, and the most fervent acolytes know nothing about the science around the issue.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 10, 2021 10:13 AM (Jsjd7)

Exactly. If I am in the left lane, and actively passing slower traffic on my right, I will stay in the left lane until I get past the head of the pack, and then pull over. Because pulling over sooner to accommodate the guy behind me that wants to go 85 means I get trapped in the right lane for a long period.

It is drive right pass left. Period. And everyone abides. Not because cops will pull you over - there are no cops on the highways - but because it is a cultural thing. Gerrmany is pretty good too. On the no limit sections, it is religious. On the speed limit sections eh could improve a bit.

But afterall, Weasel was trying to make an analogy.

I was having a take with my son last Saturday night. At 26, he will see the end of what is happening now, for good or bad, but a lot of us won't see how this all turns out, just because we won't live that long.
What is happening "now" has been building for years, and there is no changing it, we just have to get through it.
We have no place to stand; no media, no real political party that is "ours", and marginalized elsewhere.
In short, we are losing.
The outcome is not pre-ordained, but sitting at home or railing about it on the internet will not change anything.
If we want our way of life to survive and endure, we must do something more pro-active about it. More than just posting on "Ace of Spades" or shooting some rounds at the range on the weekend.
And I have no idea what that should be, at this time.

147 Maybe the most important thing to understand about driving is that you will almost always only arrive at your destination seconds sooner no matter how faster you drive, and the trade-off is the potential for tickets, crashes, etc.

If you're on the interstate for five miles and increase your speed from 70 to 90, you only arrive about 1 (one) minute sooner.

Take it up to 110mph and you arrive 2 minutes faster.

140mph?

Tailgaiting in the right lane is NEVER acceptable, and yet I see the same ninnies doing that too. Likewise, it's not acceptable to tailgate on a two lane road, where there is NO way to pass due to the twisting, treacherous nature of the road. Sometimes you just have to accept you're going to go as slow as the vehicle in front of you, so give the fella a break.

Sure, which is why short-trip aggressive driving gets you nothing but high blood pressure. On a long haul, though, it makes a *huge* difference. My trip from my old place to where I moved is about 1,300 miles. If I maintain an average driving speed of 60, that takes 21.6 hours of rubber turning down the road. If I can maintain an average speed of 70, it now takes only 18.5 hours.

It makes a pretty big difference on long hauls.

I'll take the radical position that the problems with traffic in So. Cal. have to do with the sheer volume and less with inherently bad drivers. If you drive these roads regularly then the flow makes sense, though it varies from freeway to freeway.

I've driven a lot here, in the south and the Midwest, and the absolute worst, nonsensical driving I've ever seen was in Connecticut from people with local plates.

As for passing, Zank Frappa @99 beat me to it. Nothing chaps my ass more than if I'm hauling it down the Interstate in the left lane overtaking traffic on the right that's going considerably slower and some numbnuts behind him decides at the last possible second to pop over into the left lane, cutting me off and driving at least 10 mph slower.

It really depends. If your route takes you through a lot of urban areas, maintaining an average driving speed at 70 or better is unlikely unless you time it *really* well. If it doesn't, you can put up impressive averages, when with the occasional truck-passing-a-truck scenario that drops you to 65 for a few minutes.

Normally, I see 90% of cops in the toll lanes vs the free lanes on local interstates for just this reason. Way easier to have speeders and way easier to pull them over and way easier to make sure they pay - that trifecta is probably hard to avoid (it's one of many reasons I don't use toll lanes, even though I could for free - even if you want to go faster and you can go faster, you really can't do it for free)...

231 Then there are the clowns who take the right lane, but refuse to slow or even speed up to let others merge in. There's a video on YT from a local bay area news affiliate about a transit bus that ran a red, turned left in front of some guy with the green, and it was deemed his fault. The milpitas police said he should have yielded to somebody in the intersection.

Now, I'm pretty sure I would have seen this guy coming (seasoned motorcyclist), but I can see the dude who totaled his car momentarily thinking the bus was going to go straight. Most accidents happen in intersections, and lights are only a suggestion that confuse most people. Also know the state will protect itself, this poor bastard's insurance had to pay for the bus, a new car and his rates went up about 10% for his trouble.

The dangerous thing is when somebody in a 15-foot pickup truck tries to fit his vehicle into an 11-foot space between my car in the middle or right lane and the one just ahead of me in the left or middle. There I will speed up a bit to be nearly even with the car just ahead of me, so the giant truck can't force its way into the too-small space.

284 142 Bozo, For the most part, it took roughly 8-10 years with escalating provocations by the British for the American Revolution to start. The early resistance was peaceful regarding petitions, protests, boycotts, etc. while the response by the British was to double down on challenges. Due to this, eventually the Sons of Liberty has the tacit, if not always exuberant approval of the majority of the population which made the colonial executive officials and their supporters on the defensive. The overreaction to the Boston Tea Party by the British in shutting down the port of Boston directly led to the later Boston Massacre.
Similar situations arose with the English Civil War, the French Revolution and the later Russian Revolution where the majority of the population slowly concluded that regime policy must change when the majority felt the current now intolerable. The French and Russian revolutions were later hijacked by radicals which is always the risk of revolution. In both the English Civil War, and the American Revolution, the middle ground held out.

I recall hearing Christians in China praying for the same thing, which seems kind of backwards to me.

I pray for Christians and any religious minority to be *delivered* from persecution, not get piled on.
But IMHO, the persecution of Christians in the West is not due to anyone praying for us to get harassed, isolated, deplatformed, etc. It is because Christians in the West have essentially abandoned our Christian heritage and God himself.

293 I swear, every time I commute (doing it again in a few minutes) there's some clown in the fast lane that everybody has to try to get by. Usually almost always a Prius or Tesla (they get the HOV stickers, so figure they HAVE to be in the commute lane, regardless of hours or speed).

The last 2 times I passed one of these idiots - with 3/4 mile of nothing in front of them - they were wearing a mask all by themselves. They won't look at you when you slow to glare at them. I especially love the texting ones, that go 47mph, then hit 85, then 63, then 90 - always slowing down as soon as they catch up with traffic so there's no way you can pass. I'd also swear a lot of these clowns are communicating via radio - sometimes the choreography of "trading lanes" while going 63 is a thing of beauty. Like synchronized swimming.

Ok, time to go see what awaits me on 101 today.

"rotation into value" is what I hear. DOW is more producer of real stuff (I think), Nazzie has been crazy high with expectations. The money pump could cause inflation which might bring everything down (to earth) ... but hard to say when.

Fear of shortages is being pushed everywhere now, and that fear will cause hoarding and cause shortages. Also paying people to not work can cause shortages (and inflation, but ammo might get cheaper, everyone already hoarded it?)

Most bad drivers are women. Period. The science is settled.

However, yesterday I was being trailed by a Mercedes for some period of time. I guess he was "drafting" off me, thinking if anyone was going to get a ticket it would be me. So he'd speed up, then I'd get over, and he'd get over behind me. I'd pass a slow car, look in my rearview mirror, and there he'd be. Behind me and speeping up toward me. So again, I'd get over. He'd get in behind me. Whatever, douchebag. So eventually I slowed to an "unacceptable" speed, and he passed me by.

Rich people, trying to glom on to us working stiffs and take what they can without paying their fair share. How's that for a metaphor.

Driving by relative position. A lot of smoothbrains do this when not paying attention.

It gets really annoying when you need to change lanes, since they keep their front wheel locked to your back wheel no matter what, rather than maintain a constant speed so you can duck behind them.

For the most part, driving tactics should be defensive as the goal is to get to your destination in one piece, not trying to make other drivers do what they should. This is regardless of whether or not they violate the formal or informal rules of the road.

Had some close calls but so still been fortunate other than a fender bender or two. YMMV. Stay safe out there.

360 Had a talk with the wife last night about this very topic...the nation, not bad drivers.

She says the two sides 'don't talk to each other'. I said why would I talk with someone who wants to destroy me? For the longest time, the Right thought the Left was mistaken, while the Left thought the Right was evil.

You can talk with someone who is mistaken and try to persuade them. If someone is evil, all you can do is destroy them.

Now the Right has finally woken up to the fact that the Left actually is evil, not mistaken. So we are armed and arming camps.

At this point, I'm just watching and waiting for the shooting to go nationwide.

364 I remember driving the autobahn in Germany back in
the day. NOTES: If you're only going to drive 95 stay out of the fast
lane. If this causes an accident, it is your fault. It was daily
procedure to drive 110 mph in the slow lanes so the Porsche, Mercedes
and BMW could pass unhindered at 150. Many of the Polezi cars were
hopped up Porsche carreras.

Posted by: Ray Mota at May 10, 2021 10:51 AM

Was in a jeep that broke down on the autobahn back in the 70s. Pulled over to use the call box to get a tow and while I was standing there I heard what I thought was a jet or a helicopter coming towards us. I looked down the road and spotted what appeared to be a lambroughini in the left lane doing about 150mph. When there are accidents on the autobahn they are almost always fatal.

This is true, but there's an even more casual problem. You can't convince someone with whom you share no basic principles. If you share those basics - the big little things like "nation states are a generally pretty good system" then you can disagree on policy and try to change each others' minds.

If you don't share *any* common ground, then there's no point. Every disagreement is an existential battle. And that's where we are with the Left (and conversely, where the Left is with us). You can have a policy disagreement with a liberal, but you can't with a Leftist, because the Left and the non-Left share *nothing* in terms of first principles any more. Nation states (and, by extension, borders), private property, individual choice, self-ownership, individual value and more are values that underpin the old system in which we live. The Left not only doesn't share those values at all, those values are anathema to their new system.

What we are seeing is not organic in the sense that it comes from a frustration by a majority. It is more to the point that these are minorities that have been inflamed by direct government interference on their behalf. Incentives matter and when government actors become blind, deaf, and dumb, it is because they provide incentives for these extra governmental radicals to get even more violent and radical. The mistake is to see this as a revolution when in reality it is a coup by an elite faction that wants to punish, coerce, and even kill its opposition and they seek every tool to do so.

Revolutions generally occur when the majority feels that the current situation is intolerable and change, even the risk of radical change is in order along with the replacement of societal governing elites. Revolts based on radicals can be bloody but usually fail without outside intervention see the Shining Path insurgency for example or bloody Middle East uprisings. In the American Revolution's case, it was the French and later Spanish getting involved that sealed the deal. In Libya, it was the West that got involved to support replacing Qaddafi.

This is designed to put small business in an awkward spot, with the eventual goal of doing away with small business.

Businesses, in order to keep their licenses, will told they have to mandate vaccinations. But, OSHA will tell them they can't due that, because they then become liable.

Small business owners throw up their hands, sell out to LargeCorp or close their doors.

423 I know I'm in the minority here, but that's the same attitude that the leftists displayed toward a BUNCH of laws 'because Trump.' I'm not happy when I get behind someone obeying the speed limit (a.k.a. 'law') and I don't want to, but if it's the LAW then I don't complain - I deal with it.

Very bad analogy between the left and the slow passing (left) lane drivers who refuse to move aside. If it's a stupid law you don't get to ignore it. That's a leftist attitude, the law doesn't only apply if it's convenient or if I think it makes sense.

Bwaahahahaha!
I did that on my last road trip to visit my Dad. Dude I did it to was in a Styrofoam cup of a Hyundai. Hanging out in the passing lane running 63 in a 70 m/ph zone. Tried to pass me, in my hemi R/T Charger. I matched him m/ph for m/ph up to about 74 when he was leaning forward gripping the steering wheel in frustration. Then I blocked his stupid ass as he came up on an 18 wheeler forcing him to slow down of rear-end the 18 wheeler.

I would totes be happy with the loss of fuel efficiency on my Charger if I could have a ring mount M2 for the sun roof. Nothing says get out of the way like so 50 cal through the rear window, then about a three second burst into the engine compartment as you pass.

434 Then there's the drivers whose cruise control is set 1 MPH higher than yours and, while passing, insist on you braking or maybe running into the slower car ahead of you instead of accelerating past you. I hate that.

435 Amen. And amen to #434 too. Once, in a fit of perversion, I read a Dear Abby column. The wife complained that her husband was driving 75 in the left lane and would not move for anyone, saying he was "teaching 'em a lesson." She signed the letter something IN TEXAS.

The angels must have been watching over me because the reply was completely sane and not like most of the answers that make me gnash my teeth and get very very angry. DA said something like "He's likely to be shot doing that."
