Gun Thread: Samurai Mother's Day Edition! [Weasel]

Howdy, Y'all, and welcome once again to the Gun Thread! If you're new, this is the time we gather 'round each week and talk about guns 'n shooting. Don't be bashful, jump in and introduce yourself! I popped down to the farm for a quick trip this week to check on things. All good, but I didn't have time for much shooting, unfortunately. I really need to take my own advice and make a little more of an effort while I am there by taking a break from the rigors of organic tree farming, which to the untrained eye, resembles sitting in a comfy chair looking at pine trees, drinking coffee and smoking cigars.

Programming Note: I am going to be on a highly-classified Top Secret mission next Sunday evening, so I won't be around to comment much on the thread. I will check in from time-to-time to see how things are going, so remember, no fighting in the Gun Thread, please try not to burn the place down, and remember the 'ette's are armed! Weasel, That Ain't a Gun!
Why yes, yes it's not. It's not a gun, it's a sword! A katana to be precise, I think.

I have been watching a bunch of restoration videos on YouTube lately, covering everything from Swiss watches to antique bench vises (viceii?), when it occurred to me I have an item that could use some TLC. It's a sword handed down to me by my Dad and it's been in the family longer than I have. Since I have had it I've always meant to have it looked over. The story of how he acquired it isn't particularly exciting. In the late 1940s he was working at a service station as a teen and had to take the back seat out of a customer's car for some reason. The sword was under the seat, the customer wasn't interested in it, and gave it to my dad. That's it. That's the story. No hail of gunfire and samurai charge and taking it off a dead Jap on Iwo Jima or anything. Frankly, it's a little anticlimactic, but perfectly normal for my ancestors who are a notorious bunch of criminals, liars and cowardly scoundrels. Tennoheika Banzai!

So I started doing some research. I could tell it was old, and of the Japanese samurai katana style, but that's all I knew. I quickly found out that the rabbit hole for swords is not only every bit as deep as it is for guns, but much, much deeper. Bigly deep. I began by poking around on the internet and learning what I could about how they were made, some of their history, and most importantly how to take proper care of them. The basic rules I have found are don't touch it, keep it oiled, and for Pete's sake, don't try and clean it or 'sharpen' it yourself!

Until he other day, the sword was sporting an obviously unoriginal handle, or tsuka, which I have since removed to see if the tang (nakago) is signed. Although it's not signed by the maker that I can tell, it does have a series of faint crosshostaed file marks on both sides in the Higaki Yasuri pattern. Other than that, it's in the same shape as when my Dad received it about 70 years ago.

There are very few people (togishi) in the U.S. who hand polish swords. By hand. As in, not with machines. I managed to find one of them, sent a bunch of photos of the blade, and asked for advice regarding my options. They tentatively identified the sword as from the the Mino-den School and estimate it's age at, get this, 400 years or older. I knew it was cool, and old, but 400 years old? Holy crap! I thought my '03 Springfield made in 1909 was old! Just to make sure, I have since had the assessment confirmed by others who specialize in the field of Japanese sword making. That's the good news.

The bad news, is I need to have it polished, and to have that done by an expert ain't cheap. The correct hand polish is a process that takes weeks of work to perform, costs around $100 per inch, and the wait list is measured in years for a top polisher to begin work. I also need to have a new custom shira-saya, or storage handle and scabbard mounting made for it. What the hell, right? It's only money, and what am I going to do, start buying guns and ammo?

So I'm on the wait list, now currently estimated at 23 months. When it's my turn I box it up and send it to the West coast. The polisher I've chosen seems confident the blade will restore nicely, as the oxidation is all on the surface and has not pitted the steel. I've given it a nice protective coat of oil, and have promised myself to treat it a little more respectfully now that I know it's age. I have no idea what it's worth, and frankly do not really care. I'm going to have it restored to it's former head-lopping glory in the traditional way because I think it's the right thing to do. There are other much cheaper and faster alternatives for shining it up, but someone who doesn't know what they are doing can easily ruin a blade. Since Weasel-san is now pretty much a samurai warrior, it needs to be done properly and in the ancient manner.

What would you do? Git 'er done with a grinder yourself, or honor the blade, its maker, and all of its previous owners?

13 I have two family members planted in Europe due to the Nazi's and a few who made it back from the South Pacific that loathed the Japanese until the day they went home to God. I could never therefore get into collecting Axis weapons or memorabilia.

Not much to report here. Cleaned the rifle for the first time last weekend and I cleaned the Sig earlier today. Want it running nice when I take it to the Sig Academy next week.

I blame "Forged in Fire" for the resurgence in the interest in the making and use of edged weapons. Also, Doug Marcaida is fun to watch when wielding an edged weapon. That guy is unbelievably fluid in his motions.

Could be, but they were generally considered such valuable family heirlooms they were handed down over the generations. As a result, many of them were carried during WWII by the imperial Japanese. Many Japanese with that type of lineage ended up in the officer ranks.

34 we have an Arisaka, with the crest, AND the bayonet.

bayonet has bullet strikes on it. too bad we found it at the asshoe gun shop, as that meant there was no way to get in touch with the seller and get some provenance on it. figure we will donate it to the WW2 museum in Nawlins when we go, assuming they want it. it's not as if we've got kids or family to leave them too.

A while ago, I pre-inherited a semiautomatic M-1 Garand. I'm interested in guns but a newbie; so I did what Weasel did, but guns are much less expensive to have checked over by a professional! My benefactor did not think it was in shooting condition and I knew I wouldn't know either way. A few weeks at the gunsmith, $125, and I had a clean and verified safe rifle waiting for me, with the bonus of shined-up 30.06 that the smith believes is in fine shooting condition. Helluva deal. He spent a little time with me showing me how the different parts work. Weather has not been kind to rifle shooting desires here in NW MO; so I haven't been able to shoot it yet. I hope to rectify that this summer. The serial number seems to indicate Springfield manufacturing in 1948; so not amazingly old like the sword, but definitely not something for a newb like me to take a chance on without professional help. I should do pics and stuff for the thread. I'm insanely busy with other obligations, however; so this'll hafta do.

42 Now for the range report: Yesterday was IDPA day, and, bonus, no family type stuff kept me from shooting. Yes, it is a competition, but, as a competitor, well, I'm a better shooter.

I did shoot well, but, as per usual, I wasn't fast. My best stage, however, was a 5 target silhouette stage. The targets started at 7 yards and the furthest on out was 40 yards.

But wait, there's more! The closest target, the rule was: weak hand only, which, for me, is my left hand. I was quite pleased to keep the 6 rounds I was required to put on target either in the 0 down ring or within the -1 ring. (I want to say I was only down 3 points on that target.

I also did well on the strong hand only target, 10 yards, all but one of the 7 shots fired was in the "down 0" ring. The down side, though, I was only supposed to put 6 rounds on target, so, that extra shot cost me.

The target I was most pleased with: 40 yard target. I put 3 out of 4 on the target, 1 "center mass" the other two basically in the pelvis region. 1 shot missed completely, but, at that distance, I was okay with the miss.

Overall, a great day at the range.

US troops looted the hell out of Japan. The US population was always more pissed at the Japanese than the Germans. Not only Pearl Harbor but the Bataan Death March and then kamikazes really got people worked up.

Fun fact: the Godzilla movies started as social commentary on the returning prosperity of post-war Japan. Gojira is actually a vengeful spirit of the all the soldiers, sailors and airmen who died in the South Pacific, fighting to the death with honor while the homeland surrendered in shame.

Later on, as the guilt faded, the films became pure monster flicks.

some of us do... #34 see above. we have a ChiCom Tokarev RSVN bring back. the guy picked up while doing a BDA with a bunch of Green Berets: the slip is signed by the full bird in charge of the unit. if it killed anyone, it was NVA soldiers found lacking, as that guy never got any farther.

49 Weasel, I'm green with envy, I've always wanted an authentic samurai sword. Treat it with the respect it deserves and you won't be disappointed. Went to the range today with a friend with the SR22 that's been my problem child. Ran great for about 50 rounds and then it crapped the bed. Wouldn't feed and the trigger just collapsed. RO wouldn't let me take it back to the bench so we just left. Got home and started checking it out after my friend left. Put in a mag and tried to load a round. Nothing. Fiddled with it and watched to make sure the round loaded and lo and behold, trigger. Cleared the weapon and started looking and the feed ramp was black filthy. I cleaned it before I went. I think I've narrowed it down. The Amscor ammo I use is very waxy feeling and I think the wax is causing the issue. Problemo is that I have about 2,500 rds of Amscor ammo.

54 A friend of mine who researched Japanese swords told me that literally tons of them are rusting at the bottom of Tokyo Bay. The ones GIs couldn't carry home were dumped at sea to let the Japanese know that no, really, you LOST.

60 Hello Weasel!! Hello fellow gun threaders...
I have sort of a shooting report this week. I spent the weekend with an absolutely charming ette..
This being the shooting report, let me say she shoots far better than she thinks she does. I handed her a variety oh hand guns... One at a time of course. She proved instantly her prior training of range safely, and malfunction jams were impeccable, so I sat there and loaded magazines and selected ammo, and just enjoyed watching her shoot.
She shot a USGI 1911 A1, S&W revolvers, a S&w 422 semi auto pistol, and a Beretta 92FS, that did NOT like the ammo I brought.
Last up was an AR which she liked shooting, but was not able to shoot it comfortably.
I want her to publish her report. Due to travel lime, she many not get it in today... Watch for her follow up though.. Great outing!!

No, I didn't. My thing is the cheap crap that everyone overlooks but I find interesting. Colts are inherently pricey and anything with a Hitler stamp is a non-starter for me.

You know what's really affordable to collect even now? Pocket pistols in .32 ACP, especially old Euro ones. Americans hate that caliber, but it's fun to shoot and not that hard to obtain. Folks may remember me singing the praise of the Yugo M70 a while back, but if you want something with a little more class (and a much better trigger), take a look at the Hungarian PA-63s.

78 My first guess on the sword was that it was one of the cheap, low-quality, mass-produced ones that the Japanese government commissioned during WW2. Rather neat to hear that it's quite a lot older. I hope you're able to clean it up. I bet it was carried by an officer in WW2 from a distinguished lineage.

Also, if you haven't yet, you might want to double-check the local laws on blades to help avoid the local authorities stealing it from you.

Thanks! Believe it or not, it's not been sharpened since it's been in my family and it is still pretty damn sharp. Like you could seriously mess somebody up with it right now. I think any sharpening that occurs is a byproduct of polishing.

My great-grandfather brought back two duffel bags full of gear from the Great War. Rifles, swords, spiked helmets, you name it. He was in the Army of Occupation and seriously pissed about not going home, so he passed the time by picking battlefields clean. That's something to keep in mind - a lot of this stuff was literally lying on the ground, not pulled out of someone's cold, dead hands.

He remarried after my great-grandmother died and his second wife is widely believed to have sold it off because when he died, no one could find it and since he was very proud of the collection there was no way he would have gotten rid of it himself. Sad.

99 Guy next door has a Japanese rifle with the bayonet and some sort of samurai sword from his dad from WW2. He stripped and sanded the crap out of the oak on the rifle and had the sword chromed. Pretty much wrecked it all imho. I was born 2 doors down and knew his dad my whole life. Carried a B.A.R. and an early version flame thrower with the tanks on his back in the Philippines. Great guy who obviously carried those experiences with him his whole life. Too bad he had a goof for a son.

Not my experience at all, quite the opposite. Some of our local restaurants had a really cavalier attitude to phone/internet orders and they got really good at it.

The national chains have been all over the place. Some handle it well, others are completely inept.

I said no, because it sounds like a really bad idea. But, I'm assuming smo9keless powder has a higher pressure. Am I all wet here?

bayonet has bullet strikes on it. too bad we found it at the asshoe gun shop, as that meant there was no way to get in touch with the seller and get some provenance on it. figure we will donate it to the WW2 museum in Nawlins when we go, assuming they want it. it's not as if we've got kids or family to leave them too.

Please don't donate it. It's a war relic and there are many collectors out there who would be interested in it for it's historical value as well as shooting it.

Here is a link to Banzi which is a Japanese collector's forum/site and maybe you can sell that rifle and bayo to someone who appreciates it's worth. Also, lots of info on Japanese weapons and bring backs.

114 82 Old Blue, The wax on the .22 LR that you have is bullet lube. If you strip it, you might have some leading issues in the bore which is a bigger pain to clean. I suggest taking either a bore brush and handle or use a boresnake to clean at the range. .22 Ammo uses the older heeled bullet design where the bullet itself overhangs the brass cartridge edge. One of the reasons that .22 rimfire is pretty accurate is this older heeled design slugs up (widens) under pressure of firing it to seal the barrel from the gases generated by firing.

The dirty feeding ramp and bore is more likely because of the powder and primer that the armscor ammo is loaded with. A bore brush or boresnake with a bit of carbon cleaner (normal firearm bore solvent) will get that right in shape in a moment. A similar ammo to yours, Thunderbolt, by Remington, is notoriously dirty .22 LR ammo.

121 For war bringbacks and war souvenirs/firearms/etc, provenance (that is some sort of official documentation) is absolutely necessary for top dollar. Best way to determine what typical provenance is for a particular weapon is google it.

Most collectors care about provenance, shooters generally don't and sometimes museums don't as well if using in a historical display.

125 Back in the 20's some guy in NY/NJ had bought the government surplus of WW1 guns for pennies on the dollar and then sold them to the public. My friend's father bought a lot of guns from him when he was a young guy . He died a few years ago and left my friend and his brothers quite the collection.

When I was 8-9 years old or so a neighbor down the street in our trailer park had a couple of foot lockers full of WWII German trophies. Lugers, Mausers, bayonets and all sorts of helmets and uniform bits he somehow managed to bring back from Europe after the War. He would let us play with the stuff in his yard.

Pretty sure most of that stuff he had was black market because there is no way one GI could bring all of that stuff back when he got shipped home.

138 Old Blue, for that reason, a lot of .22 LR people like their ammo plated with copper. It is a thin plate but eliminate one other source for fouling. Ironically, the plain old lead bullet ammo such as Thunderbolt can be the most accurate. .22 LR chambers typically are more variable in their ammo likes and often will 'like' a cheap .22 round as the most accurate in that particular firearm versus even match ammo. That being said, range time is valuable, you can find some Eley ammo (good stuff) in .22 LR in 50 box quantities from either Luckygunner dot com or SK Match if you search on the internet. Both are decently clean ammo even though they generally have lead bullets.

147 My view of the "bloody history" of weapons of war is this: If either side was engaged in straight up combat, and the weapon in question was bloodied, it was then an honorable stain, and not one of shame.

A weapon bloodied by the SS while herding Jews into the trenches or chambers, is a DIS-honorable stain, and I'd be pleased to toss such into the smelter, myself.

The honorable, bloodied weapon should always remind us of the gravity and huge cost of war, and dampen our enthusiasms in equal measure. Such reminders are necessary, lest we forget the lessons therefrom.

NEVER use modern style smokeless powder in any black powder gun!!!! Use real black powder only or a proper substitute like Pyrodex. A BP weapon, repro or original, is designed for the lower pressures of BP. There are plenty of accounts and photos of people who tried smokeless in BP guns. They did not end well for gun or shooter.

175 Actually got another quick range trip in, this time with the boss. Main purpose was to confirm that one of the Garands is 16 clicks up @100 yds using my reloads. To my surprise, it is. Action rifle match a week from today, wanted to not shoot any worse than I have lately.

Did that, and then was able to spend some time with the boss, just two of us, on the small handgun range they've carved off the side of the trap area. Goal here was to get her to like the CZ-83 more. Partially successful. Even though it's the nicest gun in the hand of any I have, it shoots low when using the sights absent real focused control, or lots of practice.

She did OK, and the success was no "too heavy" or "don't like it", this time. For the last magazine, I demonstrated some informal "point shooting" - and shot equal to my best "aimed" shots. No surprise, the gun is so natural in the hand. Point shooting, obviously at fairly short range, may be the sweet combo with the 83.

Reminds me: I've become so attuned to what a rifle shot should sound like when I'm at the range, when something goes "kaboom" it makes me wonder what might have gone wrong. I also listen for the screaming.

We had such an occurrence at the range yesterday. Appears no one was hurt, but, pretty sure someone touched of something that wasn't quite right. The other people I was shooting with agreed something didn't sound right and we paused for a bit.

No sirens, shrugged, continued shooting.

188 Tonypete, thanks. The CMP only deals in guns that were part of Military Assistance Program transfers, where the US never relinquished ownership (think I have this right). And the CMP obviously is the leading authority on earth of where every one of those guns is/might be. I recall the former CMP director, Orest, finally saying on the forum in 2015 (?) or so that he *finally* saw the end of the line on Garands. But carbines had barely been mentioned by then, they were so long out of stock, so he never opined on carbines.

I assume the Italian carbines were purchased by their govt., so this would be a commercial sale back to the US market.

The above link says they were WWII Europe left overs that somehow managed to make their way to Italy after the war to equip the Italian National Police with no records on how that occurred.

My issue with them is they have import markings which means they are already in the United States in the possession of PW Arms in Redmond WA which does not appear to have any web presence and they have been raided by the ATF numerous times for importing illegal machine guns.

196 PW has imported Mosins and I think a few other milsurps without problems, as far as I know. Have seen their import stamp over the years.

whig, in CA, they partially ruined the C&R by adding on an additional hoop to jump through, basically just another background check and fingerprinting by the state, needs to be renewed annually (renewals cheaper than initial). Think I have this right - redc has done it, he can correct me.

This combo allows home delivery of ammo ..... not sure about rifles. Handguns always required FFL involvement, I think, even with C&R license. I let mine lapse a few years back as I had acquired what I planned to acquire. Then when the state added new twists/costs, nah, fugeddaboutit. Reloading means I don't generally need ammo delivered, so, there we are.

The instructions say "if available, install the installation tool", and go on to say that if you don't have the proper installation tool the associated parts will probably get away from you and go flying across the room to where ever it is that small spring loaded parts fly to, never to be seen again. Small parts Valhalla, I suppose.

Guess what I don't have. That's right, a front pivot pin installation tool.

I went online and found several for sale, which doesn't do me any immediate good at 7:00 PM on a Sunday night. I also got a good look at what the tool is, and how it's made, and figured I could make my own. Which I proceeded to do, by drilling the appropriate sized hole in an aluminum pistol cleaning rod. It worked great and I'm on to the next assembly step.

205 A lot of the Mosins, and 54R surplus ammo, that flowed into the US up til a few years ago were from Ukraine. And the little cartouche with the box and diagonal line (sort of like a scuba diving flag design) was the mark of refurbishment at the Ukraine arsenal (Soviet era). I think.

Not a lot of close-ups in the coverage I saw of Victory Day parades yesterday, but Russian honor guards carry SKSs with bayonets. One interesting note was the inclusion of a Jeep and another US WWII vehicle, in period markings (white stars), in the parade in ..... Chelyabinsk? Kubishev? Can't remember. Fitting, but I've never noticed any US vehicles in previous parades. Lots of T-34/85s, which was nice.

I suffered Museum Overload about half-way through (notwithstanding the quality of the place), so will re-visit in the future.

221 There is quite a few stories about a lot of American firearms (Garands and M1 Carbines) stuck in limbo from Korea and the importation of these was blocked during the Obama admin by the State Dept. Never have heard the end of the story or whether Trump allowed them in but as of 2015, approximately 80000 Garands and over 750,000 M1 Carbines were involved.

The biggest problem with the M1 Carbines, aside from ammo and components right now, are that the magazines are relatively fragile and often poorly made repros compared with later battle rifles such as the M14, FAL, etc.

If you get one, get quite a few magazines. Most of the 15 rounders are okay, even in repros. The thirty round mags, not so much. Sarco and keepshooting dot com are two places that I would recommend for those.

Pretty much. It has a crosswise hole slightly larger than the detent you're trying to keep from flying. You insert the tool, line up the crosswise hole with the detent recess, insert the spring and detent, push the detent down on the spring, then rotate the tool to retain the detent. After that you push the tool out with the real pin.

Well, the 15 rounders don't work normally in the AutoOrdnance reproduction rifle, but are fine in the 1943 Quality Hardware. Next time I'm in NV or AZ I hope to pick up some surplus or South Korean surplus mags, which are said to be good.

jgsales in Prescott had some original M1 Carbine mags of differing manufacturers. At one time, Century International did as well but dunno about now. keepshooting dot com has 10, 15, and 30 round mags that are quite good and reliable for repro mags.

Think Sarco in PA had the same source but keepshooting has a good rep where Sarco is hit or miss and could have substituted sources for the mags.

Even there, modern replicas are the better bet for safety and other reasons.

Old tired metallurgy that is very unsophisticated, the value of most antique blackpowder firearms, and the doubtful histories of use and storage of most of these, makes firing these with anything other than reduced blackpowder loads unwise. I have restored some of these in the past and still have one such left to finish (a Trapdoor), I use them as wallhangers.

FFL didn't take too long, except someone there put the wrong address on it and mailed to some small town in the Sierra's. a supervisor un-fucked that in just a few days, and, joy of joys, no one had used it.

renewal is very affordable, and yes, you can have a pistol delivered to your home. you just have to log on CFARS (within 4 days of receipt, IIRC) and register it. cost is a fraction of regular DROS, and NO transfer fees, which have become obscene here in the last year.

He was also a master swordsman and a few of us fortunate students received weapons training with the katana. It is a fierce and deadly, yet graceful weapon when wielded by a master. 307 The nerdy James May guy from Top Gear has a show where he travels other countries, and Japan is one of them. He went to a village and met a master swordmaker, and he was allowed to work as a not-apprentice for a day (a real apprentice works for years to be allowed to do anything beyond stoking the fire, apparently). It was a neat episode and might be on youtube. I really don't recall where I saw it.

Anyway, after the day was over James was struck at how much of an honor it was and how much he enjoyed it, and said he would probably do that for the rest of his life if he was allowed to.

311 293 Diogenes, you can still get 6.5 Japanese and 7.7 Japanese ammo made by Prvi Partisan and Norma. The T38 is in 6.5 Japanese (a few were rechambered by China during and after WWII), the T99 is in 7.7 Japanese (more or less a rimless clone of the .303 British).

Both are exceptionally strong actions and the NRA documents one guy that took a 6.5 Japanese,rechambered it to .30-06 without bothering with changing the barrel and fired several rounds through it. Think the NRA still has the rifle which they obtained for testing. Story made the American Rifleman.

PO Ackley known for blowing up rifles among other things rated the 6.5 Japanese as one of the strongest actions.

322 One last thing to anyone coming across old Arisakas. There is a subvariant of school rifles which were retired military rifles that were not safe anymore to shoot live ammo, there are cast iron receiver and bolt variants that are not to be shot at all (training rifles), there are some weird rechamberings from other countries such as China where these Japanese rifles were captured, generally considered for collectors only, and then an official US Ordnance emergency conversion to .30-06 for use by rear guard troops in the Korean War. These generally should not be shot either due to the differences in the 06 and the Arisaka 7.7 chambers where the Arisaka is wider at the back than the .30-06.

There are also quite a few sporterized Arisakas out there and some caliber conversions that may or may not be marked. If in doubt, do a chamber cast.

We had a guy in our Civil War reenacting unit that was deployed to Afghanistan and he brought back a no kidding antique match lock muzzle loader he bought in Kabul. I still don't know how he got that thing home legally. He bought the match string stuff from someplace online and he would whirl that thing around and put in the lock and pop off a shot. It took a couple of minutes to get a shot off. It was extremely slow.

The (unelected) ATF decided they were going to pass some new legislation on guns, and the clock began ticking on the 90 day comment period on their new 80% "rules" and changing the definition of "receiver" in a way that will probably make both upper and lowers illegal to be shipped to anyone but an FFL holder.

They said they were going to make mail-order gun parts illegal, and they will.

329 317 Moron Robbie, Golden Bear is one sort of brass plated and Silver Bear uses zinc plating over steel. Both are imports from Russian sources. The problem with steel ammo is rust which makes it unsafe. Thus, brass plating addressing the issue, zinc plating is another, and laquer and polymer are the other two. Most common is lacquer and polymer coated ammo but the Silver and Gold Bear is a different spin on it. Lacquered ammo acquired a bad rep because it could melt off in the chamber under mag dumps. Thus, silver and gold bear won't do that.

All of it attracts a magnet.

Never ever discount the abject terror that a man charging with a fixed bayonet can instill in the enemy. Early in my deployment to Desert Storm i watched a troop of the 2nd Cav do bayonet drills. I was fifty feet away and damn near shit my pants! It is formidable!

And that little girl was me. Here's my just-off-the-road, hasty follow-up...Some "firsts" for me: shooting outdoors, shooting any kind of revolver, and shooting without 6-10 other people on the firing line. At this point in my journey it was perfect to shoot by myself with a patient coach and try a few new guns.

The 1911 and the Beretta were both heavier and larger than my little Sig (which I didn't try to bring because TSA). They were challenging for me, but I enjoyed shooting them. I shot the .22 left handed a bit. The revolvers were OK, but not my preference right now. I may have hollered "F***" with the first AR shot... it's very cool but I'm not yet strong enough to handle it without some kind of support. And I'm not accustomed to using a scope. I could only get off about 4 shots before I had to give up. Still, very cool experience.

I was glad to hear my technique is OK, that is a big confidence boost. We had to improvise targets a bit, so not sure how accurate I was. Many thanks to Jesse for a fun weekend!

343 325 Weasel, I have several Arisakas including a school rifle which was issued to students at secondary education facilities for things like disassembly, cleaning, bayonet practice, etc.

The school rifles differ from the training rifles in that the school rifles are normally retired military weapons that were no longer suitable for shooting. Opinions are mixed on whether blanks were fired through them and that probably depended on the school. Retired rifles have a special defacing of the chrysanthemum which is generally how they are identified.
A guy named riceone (now deceased) was the premier go to guy on Arisaka questions on gunboards dot com. However, you can still search posts for his on the site and they have a wealth of information. A similar guy for Swiss rifles named Guisan and for Mausers, John Wall, are all now passed but left their wisdom behind on gunboards dot com.

Weird Dave had an Ithaca SG with a nasty bayonet on the ONT Thursday. I was so enthralled with the idea of a pokey stabby thing on one of my riot guns I went out and purchased a bayonet clip and an M7 bayonet (Ontario Knive Co). Maby I'll send Weasel a picture when it gets here.

350 333 Moron Robbie, that rust issue is generally why it is unwise to reload steel cased ammo (assuming it is boxer primed) as the coating on the ammo is damaged somewhat during firing.

The US made some steel cased ammo during WWII as copper and brass were in short supply at time. Think it was .45 ACP and perhaps .30 Carbine

354 It is a really bad idea to sand down a Japanese rifle stock aside from collection value. They used poison sumac based Japanese Lacquer which can sometimes look like poorly applied polyurethane. Sand it and you get poison sumac particles in your lungs--not good.

If you must refinish one, best to use wetsanding techniques and liquid finish remover along with protective gear for breathing and getting it on your skin.

366 The 1950s were I think, the heyday of the butchering of mil-surp rifles by the Sporterization industry. Some, like Santa Fe, truly did quality work, and if you wanted a deer rifle based on an '03 Springfield or '98 Mauser, they're who you wanted. Others, not so good, including countless Dremel Disasters by Bubba the Hack with a Saw. I truly don't ever want to know the scope of the carnage though. But it's surely hundreds of thousands of rifles, maimed, altered and seldom, improved.

367 351, Russia has used steel cased ammo at least since WWII, the Germans did it their 8x57 Mauser at the end of WWII, and others beyond the Soviet bloc perhaps as well. For one time use, it is fine.

In arms not designed for it, it works okay as long as the firearm's extractor is designed for it. Firing steel cased ammo in the AR can cause an extractor failing a bit early but you should have those as a spare anyway.

People have reloaded some just as a test, but they report it is harder on your reloading dies and liable to rust. It also does not do well with dents, scratches, etc. compared with brass and probably not safe to reload it more than once as brass 'flows' better than steel from flexing during firing. It would also be a pain to trim such as in .30 Carbine.

Yes. Sadly, yes they have.

The official science per the CDC still says you might possibly potentially maybe catch it if you're within 6" of a person who definitely, 100% has it for 15 minutes or more.

This has been the official science regarding it for over a year now, and we have people who are MORE paranoid walking past people outside on hiking trails.

I have restored more than a few back to military issue condition for enjoyment. One of my favorite restorations is an early shopped WWI era Enfield rifle that I found butchered, repainted poorly, but still had the original barrel one century later. After cleaning the heck out of the bore, it is pitted but shootable and still in headspace a century later with the original bolt, barrel, chamber, and receiver.

380 T-34\85s...I saw somewhere recently that Vietnam (I think ) recently retired the last 30 they had and sold them to Russia, which may be where they got the ones in the parade from..I do know that the Russians had some SU-100s still in reserve that they brought out for parades in recent times.

381 357 LOL, fortunately not. I did woodworking before I restored old military rifles and I knew about Japanese lacquer issues from that. A lot of woods are irritants and some can cause a substantial allergic reaction from inhaling or touch of certain woods.

You can read about problems that GI had when they brought one home to make into a bambi slayer and wanted to sand down the stock.

We were in Spokane today for a family mother's day celebration. On the way home we made four stops. Normally I have been wearing the mask in the front door and then taking it off. Today I told Mrs. Sock I'm done with that chatade. Two places I was asked to put a mask on. I smiled at them and said no thanks. One young man tried to insist and I kept smiling and walking and telling him no thanks. He gave up. No one else said a word. If they had insisted we would have left, still smiling. Box boy at the grocery store commented that it was nice to see a real smile. People are coming to the end of their patience with Idiot Inslee and his ilk. Keep smiling at them NR. We can win this war.
