67 That photo with a boat with excessive outboard motors reminds me of a joke years ago:

Every week, a polite young boy on a bike crossed the border, hauling a box of sand. Every time he crossed, the customs guy who searched the box of sand, and every time the kid was clean. After several years the kid finally quit, and a decade later ran into the customs agent in a bar. The agent bought him a drink and said "All those years you crossed the border with the stupid box of sand, I never caught you smuggling. What was the deal?" With a smile, the kid looked at him and told him "I was smuggling bicycles."

The man with the boat is smuggling outboard motors.

79 Called Animal Control two hours ago. Still not here. Why do we pay taxes again?? Posted by: jmel

Years ago, I had some clients who called animal control because they were worried a neighboring tenant's dog was dangerous. (Mind you, the Diane Whipple tragedy is now legendary here.) Animal Control did an evaluation and concluded that with some finishing school, the dog wasn't dangerous. The neighboring tenants later sued the landlord and my clients (also tenants) for a bunch of stuff, including the call to animal control.

SLAPP. That's right. The lawsuit also included an allegation that my clients conspired with the landlord to evict the dog-owning tenants. Moar SLAPP! Lost the motion in Superior Court and got a nice, phat reversal on appeal in a published opinion.

83 DB. I can attest to this from having seen it many times, and experienced at least once, myself. I've seen guys on construction sites get absolutely hammered, laid flat when hit by a mis-guided crane hook, clumsily handled 2x4 being swung into their noggin, etc. And they'll bounce up with a kinda surprised look, like "wtf, over?". Right before their knees turn to rubber and they go down like Pinnochio, with newly severed strings. What happens, is the mind hasn't caught up with the signals that the body is sending up.

When I had that fall through the skylight a few years back, it wasn't till the next DAY that my brain began to truly register the damage done to my right shoulder. Hell, I even passed a full "range of motion" test at the ER. Did too good a job of convincing the attending MD that I was OK. Turd should've refused to discharge me, and got a full MRI or such. The damage was plain to see, but I was blind to it at the moment. Watch enough gunfight videos, and you'll also see the same thing in someone who takes a round, and really doesn't register it at the moment. Adrenaline is a helluva drug.

It is exaggerated, the ammunition must be "detectable" by military medical methods....

so for example 00 Buck works, some materials in birdshot size would not.

Birdshot would not be used militarily.

Posted by: davidt at May 07, 2021 09:41 PM (pnSY9)

The alloy used is high in antimony and likely water quenched. That and the relatively low velocity of the shot keeps the shot from deforming on impact with a soft target. It's the deformation that is illegal. Cheaper to jacket rounds. Also, there are interior ballistics challenges to using lead alloys in hi pressure and high velocity rounds.

There have been some flechette shotgun rounds used in the past. Also in tank gun and recoilless rifle ammo.

But "Don't go randomly fucking as many strange people as possible who are also fucking as many strange people as possible" is bigoted. Guess it shames their culture or something.

188 I believe shotguns have been used in every major conflict since well, shotguns have been around. For sure they used them in Vietnam. You don't put a weapon down because it is too effective. I think they use them for all kinds of reasons still. Why would they not? Certainly they are used for breaching doors, etc.

i seem to recall when the public got angry that some cops started carrying AR's in their vehicles, and not the traditional shotgun.

It probably depends on the city/county department of health guidelines when you need it, and if it will be elective or emergency.

For those wondering why the lawyers aren't biting, it's b/c there's no money in it now, but tons and tons of lost money (bad press, lost clients, harrassment, etc - have you seen the Chauvin case?). As of now, few juries would side in a non-Covid vaxers favor civilly, and the other side would know that, so there'd be no settlements. The reason people joke that it will be 10 years down the road for class actions is that it will take that long for things to "cool off" and people to be willing to consider this more rationally.

If you want lawsuits and protection now, you need to independently fund a lawyers group, like homeschoolers do with HSLDA.

Arizona has Constitutional Carry.

Possibly it's a situation like Alaska -- while no permit is needed to carry within the state (either openly or concealed), there's an optional permit you can get because it gives you reciprocity with some other states.

Virginia has had open carry for probably as long as any state in the Union. I recall they have had it in Vermont and AZ for a long, long time. My understanding of Constitutional Carry is the idea you can carry concealed or open, as long as you legally own the weapon. There is no need for a CCW permit, that likely needs to be renewed every so often, and you have to pay up for the right.

Open carry has always been legal here. Concealed carry was totally illegal until the early '90s. Then there was a CC permit process for a few years, then it went to Constitutional carry.

323 there are people who should not carry. There are some really good books on the subject like the Concealed Handgun Owner's Manual and anything by Ayoob. It is true some should not carry. But even those people need to be able to take an honest look at theirselves and then make a lucid decision. Some don't want to have that responsibility, and that is ok. You don't need everyone packing, really you only need the idea that some schlep could be packing.

All that's left is the floor to just behind the front seats (and that will need major patching), and the cowl and front inner fenders. My goal is to reconstruct the body into a facsimile of a WWII Jeep tub, with no doors, and cut-down sides to enable entry.

I removed the heater, and cut two inches off the top of the cowl, exposing a big box that was the air plenum that fed the heater. I think I can move some wiring and electrical parts into that box, and clean up the rear of the firewall. I have some old, small, and simple truck heaters, and can mount one of them to get a working windshield defroster.

357 ..You have always been able to carry in your car in Texas. Posted by: lin-duh 27-4 at May 07, 2021 10:38 PM (UUBmN)

Only after the Legislature re-did that law, which went into effect in September of '07. Before then? If no permit, then the charge was Unlawfully Carrying. And the old law was quite vague as to the surety of having the gun in a locked case, or hell, even in the trunk. Carrying a handgun sans permit in Texas was blanket covered as illegal, and only THEN were certain things listed in the law as Defenses to Prosecution. Such as going to a shooting range or event, with no unreasonable delay. Going to or from a gunsmith, ditto unreasonable delay. Going hunting/delay. OCCASSIONALLY carrying large sums of cash. Frequent carry of cash, you had to get a Security Guard license.

The Sept 07 revision did away with most all of the Texas Penal Code against handguns, which had been in effect since the early 1900s. Jim Crow origins to those laws, thanks, Democrats!

367 I think Texans didn't officially allow open carry until the 90s or even early 2000s. If I have that wrong, please check me on that. But they did have gun racks in pickup trucks for ages. I don't recall the exact rules, but if you had a shot gun or rifle, that was unloaded, you could transport it while openly showing it in your vehicle, which as almost always a pick up.

Not sure if you had to be on your way to a hunt or not. I don't recall to be honest. But handguns were certainly a different thing. Texas got CCW and open carry long after some other states. But in rural areas, I doubt much of this bureaucratic stuff held much weight.

Pretty close, actually. The olde thinking was, that if a business owner had a fat bank bag to deposit, oh, every couple months or so, let him carry, (defense to prosecution, mind you). But if it was a nightly or weekly occurrence, then he's obligated to hire an Armored Car company and let the "pros" do it.

When the Texas Concealed Handgun License became a thing in the early '90s, it did NOT do away with ANY of the Jim Crow era laws. It simply "over-rode" them for the permit holders. It wasn't until the '07 wholesale re-write of Texas' handgun laws, basically from scratch, that the dam began to break and the guns began to flow in earnest.

Now, if only we could put Antifa under the jurisdiction of the Texas Department of Parks & Wildlife. No license, no limits, no season, no worries!

As dumb and obviously rigged an idea as it is, it would have saved a person I knew his job once as he was an assistant manager of a video store and it was his job to drop the money off at the bank at the end of the night. Well one night he went to a party and went home without dropping off the cash.

He got a call the next morning from the manager saying that if the money was deposited in an hour and my friend quit the manager would not need to fire him and call the cops about the missing money.

my recollection from that time is Texans, at least some of them, went crazy with those 30.06 stickers, to ban legal CCW in their establishments. Yeah, that name is ironic of course. But I totally agree that Jim Crow hindered 2A freedoms in the South. I recall many states in the deep South that kept absurd restrictions that certainly came out of Jim Crow. I know in the Carolinas, you couldn't carry in an amusement park, movie theater, or "any place that charged admission". That was a real shame, they needed to get rid of that BS.

The only one I recall in VA other than schools, was carry in a place of worship while services were going on. I can see the gun grabbers chomping at the bit. OF course you don't need to carry in those places. Hell, no one needs to carry anywhere, right up until they time they do.

Patriot Act, stopping teh terrorizts, on yer be half!

The way this works, is that various factions of dot-fed, from nsa to dea, have NAILED the electronic comms of the cartels, their couriers and various among the retail chain in their enterprise. Intel from said comms are fed to your local Officer Friendly's Chief and soon after, a Random Traffic Stop is effected, and headlines appear.

THOUSANDS (annually) of such "traffic stops" occur, yielding huge tonnages of drugs, humans being trafficked, and other such contraband. What they all have in common, is that there's not the least damn thing RANDOM about so much as one of 'em. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad to see the drugs pinched and the trafficked humans, freed from their captors. But, RANDOM? Pull the other one. It's got coyotes on it.

Anyone this guy who runs a shop run by the state started chating with me, while one of his employees had to just stand there and listen to it.

I try to chat amicably but the guy has a serious issue with me. He thinks I am a no it all. I don't know where this comes from, but I kinda guess where it does. If I am i that store and someone asks a question I might give them my opinion. At other stores of that like, the mangers like me. If i am t here, they tell people to ask me. Not that my opinion is any better, but they know I will likely know something about it and and least give them something of value.

443 anyway, I am chatting with this guy, a manager, trying to just get on. He starts going off about history and I am only trying to end the conversation in an amicable way. This guy is considered to be an authority by the state, a man of means. I don't care about that a even a little bit, I only care about history and sharing views with others.

This guy proceeds to tell me Cinco De Mayo is Mexican Independence Day, but they got the date wrong. He goes on to say it was not about the French winning a battle as I said, but it was about Pancho Villa. He also said that Independence Day was fake because the colonies didn't win their independence until Oliver Cromwell signed the treaty.

453 He then said that Cinco De Mayo had nothing to do with the French, but it was about about something Pancho Villa did. He also said that "West" Texas had slavery until 1915. And then he said that Texans believe in slavery, they still do to this day. And of course the Alamo was all about slavery.

I gave him the Alamo bit not on that assertation, but to try lamely to further the discussion. That was a mistake. I figured out pretty quickly that this guy is a nut not interested in history at all. If I were mean, I would say his entire diatribe was some Monty Python skit.

The funny thing is he didn't even know I was a Texan, he just went all in. I feel sorry for the guy standing next to him quietly. I wonder what he was thinking. If this sounds like it was some big heated argument, it wasn't. I always knew this guy was a jagoff, but I didn't realize the extent. There was no argument there. I walked away with even a stronger idea that we are screwed.

steal his time machine and surrender America to the colonists, but few
understand that it was the abysmal reliability of the Irish-built
DeLorean that eventually made him snap and wreak unholy vengeance on the
shamrockbacks.

505 I honestly don't know what to say about Keto, intermittent fasting, etc. I have lost a lot of weight, most from intermittent fasting. I try to eschew wasted carbs like sugary syrups and donuts. i have lost 40 pounds and kept if off for years. But on a daily basis, i might eat some real shit under 2000 calories and lose three pounds. I can' also eat only meat and veggies and gain a few pounds. The problem is checking on it daily.

My opinion is the key is a calorie deficit. Not saying Keto or low carb or "IF doesn't work, I think it does. But there i no magic pill. At least not one that works for everyone. I have gone a day, then eaten a 7/11 Spicy bite with chili and cheese, and lost the most weight ever. Sure the problem there is you need to get your vitamins and minerals.

508 I would expect the Paleostinians to raise a ruckus now, for the foreseeable future, thanks to the collapse of the US (a not unreasonable bit of hyperbole for what's happened). Of course the Israelis (well, most of them) have always remembered they're on their own, or prudently should act and plan as though that's the case, and the 8 previous years of the current idiocy gave them a refresher in how bad it can be.

Though I know a few are still in shock that the 4-year miracle of sane American policies are, poof, gone, as though it was some kind of dream.

519 Cromwell aside, because he meant Conwallis. But I agree. You declare independence on your schedule. The reality is they had to win the war. That is exactly what I told him, word for word. The same went down for the Emancipation Proclamation. Sure that was a strategic move and one of the smartest political moves of the war. But in the end, the key was winning the war. If you lose, then that proclamation has no meaning.

Same with the CSA. So many say they were not a real state, but a rebellion. History shows that to be untrue. They were a a real state. They had police, politicians, and everything. They were a real state no matter what Lincoln said. They were a state, but the entire life of that state was embroiled in a war for existence.

523 All anyone has to do to decide whether the CZA was a real state or rebellion is to look at the aftermath. Unioners helped Confederates place their dead in national cemeteries. Sure they often mentioned states, as their units were based on states. But they were buried in national cemeteries. Confederate cemeteries. They had police, tax collectors, and even ambassadors. I don't get why some are so reticent to admit the reality there. The CSA was a nation. They spent their entire life in a war for existence, and they lost. Trying to pretend it was something else is ahistorical.

527 Most Americans have no clue what Italians eat. The same is true for Italians and Italian Americans. One thing that really bothers me is is when pretentious yuppies start asking of the Italian or Mexican food is authentic. There is nothing wrong with the "authentic" food, sure it is great to try. But don't down the Italian-American stuff or the Tex-Mex stuff.

Those cuisines and just as authentic and they have proven to be popular for decades for a good reason.

I see we had a poster assuring us not to worry, it's transitory due to supply chain issues and there will be no inflation next year.

Stagflation = low economic growth in an inflationary environment. That's the best we can hope for.
