Why David Lynch?

lynch1.jpg

David Lynch first appeared on the movie scene with his debut feature Eraserhead in 1977. Since then his reputation as a rather strange filmmaker has been cemented through his body of work that spans ten feature films, one television show, and more than 40 years. He's won the Palme d'Or at Cannes once while nominated four times, been nominated for the Best Director Oscar three times, and has become a critical darling. However, larger mass audiences resist his films.

And it makes total sense.

Lynch is not a filmmaker for everyone. Not in the least. I would never, ever try to push anyone I didn't think was predisposed to liking Lynch into trying to watch anything he's made outside of a couple of exceptions (I'll get to those). His movies do not follow traditional filmmaking grammar and vocabulary, eschewing most of what audiences come to expect from how a story is presented to them. I say something similar about Terrence Malick's films, but I'm convinced most people can get through his stylistic differences and discover the gold that's there. I cannot say the same about Lynch. I love him, but it's almost like being genetically predisposed to thinking that cilantro tastes like soap. Somethings are not getting worked around.

So how can we tell if you're ready to give Lynch a try? Well, let's dig in a bit to talk about how he tells his stories.

Why, David Lynch?

lynch2.jpg

David Lynch is interested in telling stories, but he's not terribly interested in telling stories the same way that everyone else does. He refers to a way of watching movies that he calls "feel-think" about how to take in and interpret the combination of images and sounds that are unique to cinema. Cinema is a different artform from literature, theater, sculpture, and painting. The succession of images and use of sound allows the artist new tools from which to communicate meaning to an audience. Instead of just actors on a stage who need to communicate emotions through dialogue, cinema communicate through shot selection, editing, and less conventional uses of soundtracks. It becomes not about taking in a story as you would in any other medium, but about using the unique tools of cinema to create something purely cinematic.

What this all boils down to is that it gets really hard to talk about David Lynch movies.

However, this mass of gobbledygook isn't without meaning. He's far less of an experimental filmmaker in his feature length films that the above explanation would imply. For all of his pretensions about using cinema in a different way, his base concern, telling stories, is still primary in his mind. He'll come up with new images to include in whatever he's working on, but he doesn't insert them randomly and without consideration. He finds the meaning for himself before he inserts it into the larger work.

What makes him more frustrating for some people is that, on top of everything above, he simply refuses to explain his work to people. I've read a lot of interviews with Lynch, and even the interviewers who understand Lynch best will occasionally drop a question that gets too close to asking for meaning of something in a film they're discussing. In those instances, Lynch simply stops talking. He doesn't dance around the subject, he just clams up completely. He feels that if he were to provide a key to the work then the magical element of cinema would begin to fall apart for audiences. He wants the discussions of what the strange sights and sounds means to happen without his involvement beyond the initial creation of the film.

Why David, Lynch?

lynch3.jpg

What does that mean in terms of how the movies play? Well, let's look at something like Lost Highway.

Lost Highway is the story of a man who murders his wife and cannot deal with his actions so he goes into a fugue state, creating an alternate identity for himself in a dream where he can save a woman who looks just like his wife and murder the man he creates that is oppressing her in his own mind, absolving him of the guilt he holds for her murder.

Explained like that, it seems mundane. I don't think it's that hard to figure out from the movie while watching it. I came up with that explanation without reading anything about the film before or afterwards aside from Roger Ebert's review (who kind of hated the film and didn't get it at all, providing me with no insight). The movie itself is opaque about almost all of this from traditional storytelling standards, though.

Bill Pullman plays the central character for the first half of the movie. In jail, he has a massive headache one night. The next morning he's gone, replaced by Balthazar Getty. What does this mean? Who could this new person be? He just goes to another house when he's released from prison and starts leading a different life. Is it Bill Pullman or not? He doesn't seem to have anything to do with Bill Pullman from before? And suddenly he meets another woman played by the same actress as Bill Pullman's wife (Patricia Arquette)? Is she the same woman or a different one? There are a host of questions (these and others) that spring to mind when trying to dissect the movie from a more traditional and literal point of view, however that's not how to watch a David Lynch movie. That's not "feel-thinking", that's just thinking.

What I do when watching one of these is to look for the core of the film, the story's central point, and the point of Lost Highway was always pretty obvious to me. The central character killed his wife. He suddenly becomes another person in the middle of the night after an earlier conversation with his wife where he had described seeing her face on someone else. He suddenly reappears much later in the film, taking back over the role from Getty, and following through on a revenge of a person responsible for harming his wife (in his mind). If all of this is connected and not random, how many explanations can there be for these seemingly random images and events? Understanding that you're at the hands of someone in complete command of what's happening on screen is the opening thought, and then letting the images play out without needing to pick apart each one at that moment for meaning, waiting for meaning to come when it will, is how I would describe how I watch a David Lynch movie.

Why, David, Lynch?

lynch4.jpg

So, if you read that last section and just feel like punching me in the mouth, let's just say that you are not going to be open to David Lynch's entire filmography. It takes a bit of work and a different way of watching movies. I find it worthwhile, others (including Ebert who didn't write a positive review for a Lynch film until 1998 ) do not.

However, I would recommend two of his films to pretty much anyone. How can that be? Well, Lynch is a very good filmmaker. He knows how to make movies really well. The issue is that for most of his work, he's producing things differently, but he's made two movies that are very straightforward films that any other talented independent filmmaker would be happy to include in their filmographies. Those are The Elephant Man and The Straight Story.

The Elephant Man is the story of Joseph (John) Merrick, the deformed young man from England in the 1880s, taken in by the London Hospital and Doctor Frederick Treves. Played by John Hurt (who was nominated for Best Actor) under a mountain of makeup made from molds of the real Merrick's body and face, it's a portrait of a perpetual outcast and his inability to ever be accepted as a normal member of society, no matter the efforts that people made to make that happen. Produced by Mel Brooks, it's also the source for one of the great memos to studio executives ever. When they presented him and Lynch with a series of notes on the film, Brooks wrote back saying, "We are involved in a business venture. We screened the film for you, to bring you up to date as to the status of that venture. Do not misconstrue this as our soliciting the input of raging primitives."

The Straight Story is the story of Alvin Straight, the Iowa farmer who rode his lawnmower over two hundred miles to meet his estranged brother in Wisconsin. Straight is played by Richard Farnsworth, also in an Academy Award nominated performance, and the movie is a quiet, reflective piece of Americana as Straight putters along the side of small highways, meeting strangers along the way and providing his homespun wisdom while revealing some deep hurts and regrets himself. It's also my favorite of Lynch's movies.

These two are the movies that I would recommend to anyone, even if you read the last section and got violent tendencies. These are accessible and emotionally engaging works well worth your time.

Lynch, David, Why?

lynch5.jpg

For the rest of you who read my explanation of how I figured out a meaning to Lost Highway, haven't seen a Lynch film, and are interested (hopefully there are a few), where would I begin? I think the best place to begin really is the obvious place, the beginning, with Eraserhead. Filmed over five years as he struggled to secure funding from different sources (including the American Film Institute and Sissy Spacek's husband, Jack Fisk the production designer), it's Lynch operating without any kind of commercial concerns, telling a story in his own unique way that was close to his heart (it's about being unprepared for fatherhood and adulthood in a sick, industrialized world).

From there, I'd suggest to go to Blue Velvet, and I'd also suggest to leave both Wild at Heart and Inland Empire to last, assuming you get that far.

Now, it's kind of impossible to talk about Lynch without talking about Twin Peaks. It was harder before Lynch made the revival show on Showtime because authorship on Network television is much harder to pin down than the imperfect method used for movies. He co-created the show with Mark Frost who ran the show most of the time while Lynch directed six episodes and had a guest role as Gordon Cole, a regional bureau chief for the FBI. The movie Fire Walk With Me is an extension of the show and cannot operate without it. The Revival is eighteen episodes long, cowritten by both Frost and Lynch, and every episode is directed by Lynch. Considering the cohesiveness of the creative team and production schedule, I consider it an eighteen hour long movie.

The thing about Twin Peaks though is that it starts as a primetime soap opera (that may be a parody, but it's hard to tell) and turns into pure Lynch by the end. TheDolleyMadison watched all of it with me, hooked by the beginning and just trudging through by the end, wanting it to just end. However, I had the opposite reaction, feeling tolerable in the beginning and becoming more enthralled with the show as we got into the Revival.

Long story short: Probably don't try Lynch's movies, but maybe do. Just make sure you listen to the little person in the Black Lodge. Your future may depend on it.

Movies of Today

Opening in Theaters:

Wrath of Man

Movies I Saw This Fortnight:

Midnight Run (Rating 4/4) Full Review "It's a consistently funny, well told tale with a strong ending centered on two characters. This is a gem of the 80s action comedy movement, and I'm glad I finally got around to watching it." [Netflix DVD]

Pitch Black (Rating 2/4) Full Review "It's fine, but it feels wrong in a couple of ways. I spent half the movie bored and the other half mildly interested." [Personal Collection]

The Chronicles of Riddick (Rating 2/4) Full Review "This is one of those frustrating movies where all of the major problems are not only at the script level, but they're so obviously at the script level and so obvious that they should have been addressed before a single pre-production sketch ever got commissioned." [Personal Collection]

Riddick (Rating 3/4) Full Review "It's a solidly good space fantasy thriller, the height of the franchise up to this point, taking the concept of the first film and actually delivering on it in a complete package." [Personal Collection]

Dune (Rating 1.5/4) Full Review "Adapting the entire book was the wrong decision for a two-hour film." [HBO Max]

Blue Velvet (Rating 3.5/4) Full Review "[T]his is Lynch reclaiming who he is as a filmmaker in grand fashion. He's telling a distinctly American story born from his own experiences growing up, informed by his own distinct method of storytelling that borders on dream logic." [Personal Collectiond]

The Straight Story (Rating 4/4) Full Review "However, despite some of the very real highs that Lynch has found in going the non-traditional route, I have a sneaking suspicion that this might be my favorite film he ever made." [Library]

Mulholland Drive (Rating 3.5/4) Full Review "This is kind of the perfect Lynch movie in a way, where the specifics and literal realities are wildly open to questioning, but the central thematic idea, the story, is never in question." [Personal Collection]

17 I find Blue Velvet magnetic, you watch it once for Hopper and Stockwell, a second time to try and figure out Kyle's character and a third time to try and understand Laura Dern's character. And you start again. And who can't be mesmerized by Stockwell doing Orbison on the roof of a car? Bizarre.

TJM, I am way behind on Lynch. I admit all I really know of him is a few episodes of Twin Peaks.

Wild at Heart was Lynch throwing wildly inconsistent tones at each other at his most outrageous. You saw the same sort of thing in Twin Peaks, especially the pilot, where the combinations of performances, music, and dialogue was either the most earnest reading of melodramatic material ever or a complete sendup of the primetime soap opera genre. I have no idea which is the right answer.

Wild at Heart was that but even further. I can largely dig it, though. At the same time, I can easily see why other people might find it really off putting. I'll never show it to Dolley, for instance.

60 55 Lynch is not for everyone. Nice job explaining how his films span from "Straight" to fantastically weird.

The Straight Story is an all time classic. As is Elephant Man and Blue Velvet. I bet he has one more classic in him. He's not a young man. We can hope.

61 "Assault on VA-33" (2021) Mr. Horse does not like it, no sir, but I outrank him. I hereby pardon this Die Hard clone, because its heart is in the right place, albeit buried under several strata of stupid.

"Crisis" (2021) Govt undercover agent will go to any length to entice very reluctant Canuck and Albanian gangs to deal fentanyl, as if there isn't any unbaited real crime going on. But there are shenanigans in academia and the boardroom too. Sad to report that Michelle Rodriguez has lost her ability to smile. Armie Hammer stars, yet several actresses remain apparently uneaten by the end.

"Rage" (2021) Glacially slow Aussie crime drama with no real ending. You don't have 145 minutes to waste on this, even with the boobies.

71 Honestly, it is going to be more impressive than Star Wars. 1) they are turning into wokeness far harder, and also more abruptly. 2) The abruptness is key. Star Wars had a couple generations of fans who loved the stuff their whole lives. As popular as the MCU is, people do not have that kind of mental history with the property (unless they are from back when the comics were good.)

75 Question: Is Sissy Spacek's character in The Straight Story autistic? Though she's odd and seems to find social interaction difficult, her father explicitly says she's not mentally retarded. She makes birdhouses and apparently the autistic seem to find comfort in repetitive tasks like that. Also, she remembers the exact date of the quarrel between her father and his brother.

Nurse, my brother loved it for the same reason. He lived in Washington until he passed away.

We both really loved Twin Peaks. I don't have to understand it--it just resonated with me, the mysteriousness and nature and oddness.

========

Twin Peaks wasn't really his. He directed the pilot and another few episodes, largely handing the greater creative control to Mark Frost.

It was in season 2 that the network demanded that they solve the crime of who killed Laura Palmer instead of doing what Lynch had envisioned which was, quite honestly, never answering it and just exploring the world of Twin Peaks. As soon as that question got answered, interest both internal and external dropped off. Lynch went off to make Wild at Heart even.

106 It's been weird movie week at Rancho naturalfake -

1) "Day of the Beast" - oddball black comedy about a priest who figures out that the AntiChrist will be born this Christmas in Madrid. He decides to commit sins to blacken his soul so that he can meet Satan, get the location of the AntiChrist's birth and kill the AntiChrist before he brings about the end of the world. Only the priest is very naive and ineffectual, so comedy and hijinks ensue. Well written, great acting, nice direction, good laughs. Streaming on Amazon for $1.99.

2) "The Soul" - Taiwanese movie streaming on Netflix. Have you ever watched a movie, where you are just hooked and really enjoying it and then they throw something at you toward the end that just ruins the experience? That's "The Soul". It involves a prosecutor who is dying of cancer trying to figure out a murder case that involves a possible ghost, a possible curse, and high tech genetic manipulation. I'm telling you this intense mofo had me riveted until right about 3/4 through. I'm not going to give spoilers. You'll recognize the moment when it comes, and you'll either roll with it or you won't. I decided to finish the movie, but (con't)

I don't think I'll recommend it because of the 3/4 thru dealio. YMMV. Very well acted, everyone is great. Intense great directing and storyline. Logical plotting without cheats despite "the twist". Check it out.

"Kafka" - Steven Sodererg's 1991 movie about "Kafka". Nicely directed, well-written, fantastically acted, fake Kafka biography as it might have been written by Kafka. Great actors in almost every part including Alec Guiness, Jeremy Irons, Joel Grey, Ian Holm among others. The story concerns Kafka investigating the disappearance of a friend that leads to revolutionaries. Philosophically, the movie is about what is the be the future, what is the 20th century to be. Strangely, relevant to these here days. Highly recommended. Dark comedy. Consistently entertaining and amusing in a Kafkaesque way.

Soderberg himself hates the movie and will be releasing a re-edited version thru Criterion IIRC this summer.

Hard to find but does streaming occasionally. Check it out.

112 From there, I'd suggest to go to Blue Velvet, and I'd also suggest to leave both Wild at Heart and Inland Empire to last, assuming you get that far.

For what it s worth, I don't agree with the proposed order of viewing. The place to start is Blue Velvet. Why? Because it is captures all of Lynch's weirdness while still being fairly conventional and comprehensible in presentation. If you don't like Blue Velvet, you'll never like his even weirder and less conventional films. And there's no point in starting with The Elephant Man or The Straight Story, because they are conventional and nothing much like Lynch's other films. In other words, even if you like them, they're sufficiently non-Lynchian that they don't tell you much about the films people ordinarily think of when they hear "David Lynch."

Actually, he came back to wrap things up, after the network screwed the golden goose.

When he walked away from it, I think it was more because he was hurt by the fact that he had no control over it. So when everyone else gave up on it, when everyone else was ready to just pull the plug, he came back, re-calibrated the end, so he could make something of it, with the movie and the third season.

To me his work on Twin Peaks is like a painter who can't afford the paints he wants, has people throwing stones at his studio, trying to burn it to the ground, and yet still, he paints what he can with the tools he has.

You should watch "The Straight Story." I think he set to tell a... well, a straight story about a guy who sets out to visit his brother, who he finds out is very sick.

Like nothing else Lynch has done, no tricks, no twists, no strange comings and goings, or messing with the time line. A guy sets out to see his brother.

It's wonderful.

Of course, things get very weird very quickly by the end of the stories. I always forget which one is which, but Frost also wrote one or more of the books that were supplements to Twin Peaks. I think he wrote the one that was supposed to have been written by Special Agent Tammy.

Lynch has said, I think, that Frost's version, which is different from his, is no more or less "authentic" than Lynch's version of things. Two different versions, and he's not at all concerned that the details diverge at some important points.

The scene with him and Grodin near the end of the movie sort of dispels the notion of Farina's mob boss as just comic relief. A well done scene.

Fuck. Best line in anything I have read since Raymond Carver's work. I love cilantro and even I get that it tastes like soap at time.

The first time I saw Eraserhead I knew I would never have a successful relationship in my life - it carved close to the bone though I had no idea why. Decades later I am Eraserhead and I have not idea way - well, maybe I do but no way am I going to explain that to anyone including Jesus when I die and just before he kicks me into the pits of hell.

David Lynch is the bomb but not the atom bomb that is 1970s movies like White Line Fever, Cannibal Holocaust, or Caged Heat to name but a few. These are low rent "David Lynch" movies in the sense that they are more about getting felt up or "petting" at a local Drive In than the actual movie. David Lynch took all this to a level that is utterly unique. Just like Wes Anderson without the does but with complete charm.

Dinner tonight: Chicken Enchiladas with lots of cilantro with a side of John Ford.

OK, It's not a movie review, it's TV. I saw that Netflix show "Narcos," over the last couple weeks, because the wife was watching it.

It was pretty good, I guess. If you're interested in the Medellin cartel, it's fairly accurate. Not as much with Cali, but still pretty ok, with lots of creative license. It glosses over FARC's involvement in the drug trade while overstating AUC's, of course. Doesn't even mention Alvaro Uribe, an indicator of the usual biases.

The photography is good, the acting is mostly good, the production value is high, the narration is pretty lame.

This is my review of Narcos.

Log Lady, Margaret, in the third season was profoundly sad and sweet. It breaks through the show's fictional story, that the actress was devoting some of her final moments to performing her scenes.

And Hawk, played by Michael Horse, interacting with her from afar, was profoundly touching as well.

217 While I was watching "Inland Empire", mainly because of the story, it occurred to me that the closet person to David Lynch is -

the late great anime director/writer Satoshi Kon.

His movies/series - "Perfect Blue", "Millennium Actress", "Tokyo Godfathers", "Paranoia Agent", "Paprika" all could've come from the mind of Lynch.

In fact, I kind of feel this would be the perfect way for Lynch to recharge his batteries would be to make a live version of one a Satoshi Kon's films.

Lynch's rigorous intellectual surrealism could only improve the sometimes illogical ecstatic writing and directing of Kon.

Do it Hollywood! It's a perfect match.

They ran simulations pre-flight and calculated an entry time plus/minus, and made sure they launched accordingly to protect Beijing at all costs. No doubt about it in my mind. 237 David Lynch is a far superior filmmaker to Terrence Malick. Despite the weirdness in presentation, Lynch offers a surprisingly conventional moral vision, based upon important values such as virtue, honor, and honesty. The flip side of course is that some of his characters embrace dishonor, vice, and dishonesty. The Straight Story is a perfect example of this sensibility, and surprised all the critics who thought Lynch just laughed at the rubes in his films. He is a rube.

Malick? I think he hates us. All of us. His dream visions make no sense. In the Thin Red Line he makes soldiers into whiny reflective Buddhists. In The New World he makes Indians and colonists alike into idiots. I feel like I'm on quaaludes when I watch his films and can't wait for them to be over. I like classical music but I want to kill myself hearing the same freaking themes in Malick's films. Ugh.

That said, I understand people who hate Lynch's work. I do not understand people who like Malick's.

First, I've always been a Van Morrison fan since the early '70's, and have always thought of him as a force in music who has a special ability to create music that finds the depth in people's souls that many don't even admit exist. And he's also a quirky musician that can piss people off en masse and really not give a rat's ass about it. Which I also like. So, I admit my biases.

Second, Morrison has blown the crap out of the minds of the WOKE who slobber at the chance to suck the statistically proven small appendages of CCP males.

"If you want to understand the psychic harm that prolonged lockdown can do to a man, then take a listen to Van Morrison's new 28-song set. Actually, you don't need to listen, the song titles say enough: "Where Have All the Rebels Gone?"; "Stop Bitching, Do Something" "Deadbeat Saturday Night"; "They Own the Media"; "Why Are You on Facebook?"

Morrison shows he knows how to write classic and new material to what is relevant in 2021. Examples of both below.
"Only a Song"? Classic Morrison, even for the WOKE babies.

Nope, it is the others that show Van's contempt for the 'Vid-down. Oh, the comments from the WOKE sites have given the order to FIRE ALL PHASERS!, and attacked him, similar to how they attack Tucker for a show. The songs are mostly blues and soul and jazz, with true lyrics that hit the mark in 2021. It's like comparing the comments from HQ to the comments found in HuffPost.
Morrison hits a home run. The WOKE has turned on him, despising him for the lyrics.

See, I do not see him as pretentious as much as he is... I cannot think of the right word. Oblivious? No, that would imply that he did not know what his effect that his films had.

He is what Rian Johnson is trying to be (and failing miserably at.) Rian sees subverting expectations as the goal, which it is not Lynch's game as far as I can see.

301 There is this YouTube video of Patrick Stewart describing working on David Lynch's "Dune".One incredibly funny story is about when Sting came onto the set. Seems that Stewart was a British actor first, never really into the popular scene. He didn't even know who Sting was.One day during a beak in filming, he struck up a conversation which went something like:Stewart: I understand you are a musician.Sting: yes, I am.Stewart: what instrument do you play ?Sting: a bassStewart: I always wondered what it was like to move around a big instrument like a bass.Sting: no, I play base guitar.Stewart: do you play in a group ?Sting: I play with PoliceStewart: you are in a police band ?

Though I think he's pretentious, I also think that's a late stage development in his career. Like people kept telling him he's amazing and he has just run with the silly shit he does. Turned it up to 11.

But I got a feeling he stumbled on that by accident. Like he was trying to make an omelette and got lost in the dry goods.

387 Did anyone else see-

"Under Silver Lake"?

It came out a bit over a year ago.

A mystery that was like a mash up of David Lynch and Thomas Pynchon. Almost great but ultimately an interesting failure.

Lynch could've pulled it off.

Kinda funny how much I've come to loathe MASH-the-TV-series. It is, as always for sitcoms of the era, going for the cheap, the quick, the obvious, two seconds of canned laugh track and a Hi-Yo Silver.

The movie may have points where it's weak around the corners in what feels like a weak-Christopher-Guest-ad-lib sort of way, but it still holds up. The TV series is a pure period piece that feels very, very old.

As for Lynch...hit and miss.

Yeah the series is some of the worst basic audience manipulation tripe ever produced with very few solid memorable bits. While Altman is a bit of an over rated director, the film MASH worked pretty well for his style and has some solid bits, with some crap.

390 Oh, I saw Midnight Run in the past week or so myself. I can see where it others would get more out of it, but comedy is a very personal thing and while I enjoyed the film well enough I don't recall laughing much if at all, and I don't feel the need to add it to my library.

Guess that is part of the art of cinema where even technically proficient stuff is still open to personal taste.

393 Lynch is one of those filmmakers I've tried to love, but failed repeatedly. When I discover a new film of his, my reaction upon discovery is a combination of excitement and revulsion. I can never watch Eraserhead again. It was too disturbing. Whenever the urge hits, I beat that urge into submission. Hated Mulholland Drive & Lost Highway. Absolutely loved Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart. Loved the original Twin Peaks too though I wasn't able to get into the revival. May try again someday. I'm going to take your recommendation and watch The Straight Story. That sounds about my speed these days.

==========

I had heard of this when it was released on Netflix but never watched it. Just finished the bizarre little 17 minute short, and it was interesting. David Lynch interrogating a monkey about a murder while both speak almost exclusively in cliches.

Fascinating.

398 My older brother and I went to see Eraserhead at the Harvard Square Theater when it came out. We couldn't stop laughing! But it was a brilliant piece of filmwork. Elephant Man was excellent, and wouldn't be the same without John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins.

I remember reading an interview with Dennis Hopper re Blue Velvet. He had been down in Mexico out of his skull on drugs for years when the script was sent to him. He told David Lynch "I am Frank Booth!" Which even Lynch thought was a little scary. The rest is history. If I recall correctly, Blue Velvet relaunched Hopper's Hollywood career.
David now has his own art collection and is doing quite well with it. The man is more Warhol than Spielberg, and a definite one of a kind. He'll always be iconic in my book.

399 It's a love/hate relationship with Mr. Lynch. I would honestly prefer it to be all on the good side. But I can't do some of this stuff. Eraserhead? Lord knows I have tried. It's, just, over my head. I keep working on him. He is, like cabbage. I used to hate it. Now I like, even love it. But... there are still problems. With cabbage, it is that the stems and some parts of the leaves, can be too papery to chew. With Lynch... he... sometimes... just goes too far, escapes me. Which... is why I keep trying.

Good show, old boy. Girl? I can... never remember. Having a wife doesn't necessarily excuse you from being a Lynch, these days? Maybe.

400 Without Remorse - is a perfectly fine Tom Clancy book, which establishes the long running character, John Clark, who is in many - if not most - of the Jack Ryan, and now Jack Ryan Jr. novels.
Amazon Prime, takes this book, and other than getting the title correct, and the name of the main character correct (including why it is changed (near the end of the book), which does not mirror - in even the slightest way, the storyline in the book), offers a really, really awful movie.

This book should have been made into a short series - say, 5 - 90 minute episodes - and released over a 2 month period. Yes, the plot of the book is complex and with twists. The screen play could have been updated as well, assuming the Viet Nam war was not deemed "marketable" for a 2021 movie release.
But this was just awful, and all I can say is, don't waste your time. I guess at the end of the day, the Tom Clancy estate simply accepted the payment for the movie rights, and did not insist only any approval rights over the screen play.
