Top Stories

There's a word for nostalgia for a past you never experienced, but I've forgotten what it is. Or perhaps I never knew.

When I was a kid my parents moved to the very outskirts of Sydney. Our backyard was Kuringai Chase National Park, where Skippy was filmed. A schoolfriend was the son of the head park ranger. Great for catching tadpoles in spring; not so good in summer when it all caught fire.

Tech News

  • IBM has shown off the world's first 2nm chip. (Tom's Hardware)

AnandTech also has the story, with different details.

The big news isn't that this is 2nm, because nothing about the chip is actually 2nm in size; it's just a marketing number. The big news is that this is the first GAAFET chip, using an advanced new transistor design.

A few years ago, at the 20nm node, Intel introduced FINFETs - transistors that stick up vertically like fins - while the rest of the industry bet that it could get another generation out of regular, planar, FETS. Intel was right and everyone else was wrong, and it took years for the rest of the industry to recover.

This is part of why AMD was so far behind until the launch of Ryzen in 2017 - they had an inefficient CPU design and an inefficient fabrication process from Global Foundries. Not a good combination.

GAAFET is required for the next few generations, from 2nm (meaningless number) down to 1.2nm (meaningless number). I'm not sure exactly where this train will end; there's at least four full generations to come as well as in-between generations like 6nm and 4nm, but without seeing the actual transistor density, power, and frequency numbers - not to mention costs - it's impossible to know what any of it means.

  • For example Sony is reportedly planning to update the PlayStation 5 to TSMC's 6nm process. (Tom's Hardware)

This is 18% denser than the current 7nm process but otherwise very similar, so it might be cheaper than switching to an entirely new process node. This is an expensive task and not something you do unless you're churning out millions of devices, but Sony is churning out millions of devices. Even with the industry-wide supply constraints they've sold over 8 million of these consoles.

  • China's greenhouse emissions now exceed those of all the OECD nations combined. (BNN Bloomberg)

One easy way to reduce greenhouse emissions is to export all your industrial capacity. Not saying it's a good idea, just an easy one.

  • The Surface Laptop 4 doesn't have the four essential keys. (AnandTech)

Even on the 15" model which has tons of space all around the keyboard.

It's available with either a 13" or 15" 3:2 screen, and a choice of 11th gen Intel or 4th gen AMD processors. For me, without those keys, it's a non-starter even if they cut the price by half.

  • Delayed ACKs and Nagle's algorithm don't mix. (WizardZines)

Tracking down why the simplest requests take 50ms when the client and the server are on the same network. In this case it's an HTTP POST and might not matter, but this could be crippling if you're using something like Redis or Memcached, or even a regular database.

  • Google is going to automatically enroll users for 2FA - two-factor authentication. (ZDNet)
You may not realize it, but passwords are the single biggest threat to your online security
said Google, as news surfaced of the thirtieth major corporate data breach this week.

  • The HP ZBook Fury 15 G7 has the four essential keys. (Hot Hardware)

It has a full numeric keypad and the four essential keys. The CPU is an 8 core Xeon W-10885M with a top speed of 5.3GHz, paired with an Nvidia Quadro RTX 5000 with 16GB of RAM. The screen is a 15.6" 4K panel with 100% DCI-P3 colour and an eye-searing 600 nits max brightness.

Main memory goes up to 128GB, and it has three user-accessible M.2 slots so you can install 24TB of storage if you really want to. It comes with two Thunderbolt ports, HDMI, and DisplayPort, two regular USB ports, a full-size SD card slot, 1/8" headphone jack, wired Ethernet, and a dedicated charging port for the provided 200W brick.

Not surprisingly given those specs, prices start at $2299 and go upwards pretty fast. But if you need a no-compromises laptop for work - and the company is paying - this could be it.

Change of Pace Anime Music Video of the Day

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is a fun little series that doesn't have a mean-spirited bone in its body but is not kid-safe. Tohru is in love with Kobayashi and though nothing ever happens on screen there's also nothing platonic about it. Also she's a fifty foot long dragon.

Disclaimer: Not that there's anything wrong with that.

3 Hey, Pixy. Dragon size definitely seems like a fun title worth looking at for folks who love slice of life comedy with heart, hilarity and some nice jiggly action, too. As you should know, as a man of culture I sure do love the recommendations you've been providing, Pixy, like DanMachi and the fun OVAs Nuku Nuku and Devil Hunter Yohko. In particular, Yohko really surprised me and I was relieved to be watching that particular title alone ;-)

Although, I must say your constant emphasis for Non Non Biyori has been definitely intrigued as nothing truly suits my fancy like care free Slice of shows that help ease away all the mendacity of society and cultivate a sense of serenity that many anime can only do so. So,I got make more in my schedule.

4 2 Good morning pixy! I am not a geek,, so, what are the Four Essential Keys?

The Four Essential Keys are PgUp, PgDn, Home, and End. Programmers use them a lot while editing code, often in combinations with Ctrl, Shift, and/or Alt, so having to use yet another key because they're alternate functions on the regular cursor keys is very, very annoying.

17 I was just never enraptured with Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid as the main human character is on a bender and makes a drunk promise so next morning a dragon shows up. Whut? But it does have a following.

Currently there is for light Isekai I've Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed My Level in which Azusa-chan, office drone, has managed to work herself to death and is given a chance to be reborn into an easy life. So she becomes the Witch of the Highlands and after 300 years finds out she is Level 99 and her easy life gets complicated by a fire dragon, two slime girls, the busty beauty who is the Lord of the Flies, and a very erratic elf.

21 Just checked out Non Non Biyori and it definitely was a chill experience that definitely had the quiet approach more akin to some movies than any series I've experienced. Definitely loving Renege-Than the most as she is definitely a unique and kawaii character.

Always love the name Ren-chan cause it helps me remind of another show I love Dears whose main character is also named Ren and has the same aloof personality of course with some major differences in physical built and purpose if you know what I mean.

The VFW has a big space so it wasn't filled. I'd say there were about 60 there at the townhall and handsome conservative, Hirsch Singh shook my hand. I've already shaken hands with the other guy in my district who's running for state Senate, and he's not quite as handsome-but a great guy. I like the format where they introduce themselves and take questions from the audience. They were written on cards. He likes it better where people shout things out, but you can't always hear them if they do that.

Posted by: Anna Puma at May 07, 2021 05:41 AM (8zaaV)

___________

Quite easily. It's a zero-turn John Deere. I was mowing next to the pond and hit a soft patch in a narrow spot. There was almost no slope but all the weight of the mower is in the back, so once they start sliding there's no way to stop them. Once they get stuck they can't be pulled out by hand.

When I shamefacedly explained it to Brookside, they laughed and said it happens quite a bit. No more mowing on slopes or near water.

84 My work has hp's zbooks. Not the newest of course but the version before. Not bad but the hp supplied hub has all sorts of issues. Displays not being sensed is my main issue but a really bad feature of the hub is the fact that the entire top surface is an off/sleep button.

Zbooks are Catia capable so that's why they're allowed but the performance is nice for chugging through analysis. I do most of that on a performance cluster but there are still a few windows based tools that I need to run locally.

Also modern companies have so much security software running in the background you probably need good specs just to get minesweeper to run.

A similar problem with a lot of desktops is they put the power button right next to USB ports so when you go to plug something in it's easy to push the power button instead.

88 The Amazon driver story reminds me of working at ups. We all watch a training video on how to lift boxes, examine your surrounding, bend at the knees, ask for help, blah blah, and how to load/unload a truck. After the video we were then told, yeah don't do any of that, not enough time. Seriously the guy in the video took about half a minute to move the box, in the same time you are required to move 50 boxes. Nothing would ever get done.

The cover art depicts White 3 of 1st Staffel/JG 77 overflying a shot down Kittyhawk. These markings are a recycle of Option J from the Eduard 1/48 scale dual combo #11116 Afrika that comes with a Bf 109F-4 and a Bf 109G-2.

Luckily the new kit has markings for four more aircraft if you have already built White 3 using the previous kit.
