GAINZZZ and BOOKZZZ

I'm hobbled by a planar fascitis pain in the heel. I think I got it from walking uphill with weights. So I've got no GAINZZZ.

On the BOOKZZZ front: I know this is a mancard-forfeiting offense, but I never saw Where Eagles Dare. I've seen bits of it, I saw some machine-gun fighting inside the castle, but not more than ten minutes of it.

I always meant to watch it. Never did.

The Critical Drinker praised high hell out of the movie, so I looked on Amazon and saw I could buy it for $5, so I did.

I also bought the book for $4, which I started reading yesterday.

It's really good so far. I can't recommend it yet, given that I've only read the first few chapters, but so far it's living up to what Critical Drinker promised. I'm reading the book first because Drinker said it had a lot of twists, which I imagine would be better handled in a book. More clues and anticipation in a book. In a movie that kind of intricate plotting tends to be either rushed or omitted completely.

What about you? GAINZZZ? BOOKZZZ?

PLANZZZ?

10 Still working on getting the weights going. Soreness is going away quicker- just getting tightness, which is kind of what it says on the tin.

Squats may be a wonder exercise, but they suck. Still love them.

Been taking a tour of good movies from the Drinker myself. The Rocketeer, which led to the first Cap movie (both Joe Johnston)- which led to Winter Soldier. What a great movie. And what a great character Sam used to be. Gonna cue up Soldier here in a minute.

18 No GAINZZZ. Still haven't started the diet, because I've been too depressed and food and booze are always right there.

BOOKZZZ? Been reading 1920: The Year That Made the Decade Roar. Light reading, and a lot of the chapters are wheel-spinning ones you can skip over. Not recommended.

Prince Albert: A Life by A.N. Wilson. Interesting, but slow going.

Still have not revamped and reissued The Director's Cut and haven't done a damned thing on The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of. Am actually waiting to hear from a publisher about the latter, in order to kick me in the ass to finish.

19 GAINZ: I'm back in the gym regularly, although I'm not running enough to lose a lot of weight. Last year I was running about a mile every day and dropped to 214. Now I'm at 230 and holding steady. But I had to stop running back then because of plantar fasciitis in my heel, so I'm trying to ease back in slowly.

Other than that I'm working on sewing projects. I want to finish an 18th century waistcoat, and then try my hand at a pair of pluderhosen (yeah, I'm weird). I've also been trying to get back into practicing the violin regularly.

BOOKZ: I'm reading bits and pieces of John Hawkwood: An English Mercenary in 14th Century Italy, as well as George Silver's Paradoxes of Defence and Brief Instructions On My Paradoxes of Defence.

32 My right scapula has essentially fallen asleep over the last few years. "Amnesia" they call it.

I was doing fine with my GAINZZZ except that now my right lats look very different (smaller) than my left. And it was giving me pretty bad shoulder pain - I think for the same reason that back pain happens: because the body was perceiving the antagonist muscles to be weak and so were activating/seizing to protect themselves.

So once I figured out that was the problem I found the right scapula activation exercises to do...bam, the pain is probably 20% of what it was two weeks ago.

I read it. Honestly, I think you are right and it explains a lot. If you look at Goldwater as a sacrifice candidate in '64 against an incumbent with the power of a Dead Kennedy behind him, it makes even more sense. Consider Reagan's troubles with the nomination (which sort of mirror Trump's) and it falls into place even more.

74 Force 10 from Navarone is probably the screenplay-to-book the poster above menat.

The screenplay was written in 1961 for a movie which was never made. Then, in 1968, he wrote the book based on the screenplay.

The 1978 movie ditched most of the plot and characters from the original screenplay and novel.

Later still, MacLean took the plot of the MOVIE and used it as the basis for a novel called "Partisans."

Now reading (as a dead tree book) The Path to Victory by Douglas Porch on the Mediterranean campaigns of WWII. Porch concludes that the Med and Italy were strategic dead ends for both Axis and Allies (only Churchill was enthused), but served their purpose in 1) giving experience and coherence to both US and British forces and 2) Stalin would not have accepted the Western powers sitting around waiting for a buildup for invasion of northern Europe.

Also re-reading (as an e-book) Advise and Consent by Allen Drury. After all this time, one of the great political novels in America.

Dubliners is where Joyce proved he was an absolute master of the English language.

It is not a bad series. I'd highly recommend the Wax and Wayne series (which is sort of a sequel series to Mistborn.) More grounded. More like an adventure serial in it's execution. Reading Mistborn helps you get a feeling for the way things work though. Sanderson is strange because he swaps styles a LOT.

179 I'm hobbled by a planar fascitis pain in the heel. I think I got it from walking uphill with weights.
-----
SUGGESTION if it becomes chronic: Find and try a sports chiropractor who demonstrably knows how to adjust feet.

ANECDOTE: I have very high arches and, in my early 30s, decided to train for a marathon. After getting up to 5 miles regularly though, got severe plantar fasciitis in both feet.

For 2 years, walking was painful -- especially when first getting out of bed in the morning. I tried stretching, foot rolling, etc. with no joy. Went to a podiatrist, who natch said the only cure was cortisone shots (that I tried, but didn't work) or surgery.

Luckily, was telling this story to a co-worker who was a former chiropractor. He referred me to a great sports chiropractor.

Turns out you have 26 bones in the human foot, and mine were all completely locked up -- unable to move and flow in harmony with one another. After 2 weeks of feet adjustments, I was pain-free and ran my first marathon a couple years later.

It was right about this time that Mark McGwire retired from MLB owing to chronic plantar fasciitis.

194 I'm reading an article from a 1966 law journal about the adoption of the New York Field Code here in California in 1872. David Field was in charge of codifying much of New York's common law in the 1860's. When western territories became states, several of them adopted the "Field Code" since many of the men in charge of these new states came from New York. California was one of them; much of our Code of Civil Procedure and Civil Code (the stuff adopted in 1872 to replace earlier statutes) were actually written by Field, himself, who moved here. It's fascinating American history and very useful, as a litigator, doing statutory interpretation where there isn't much case law.

249 I read No Ordinary Killing by Jeff Dawson, a murder mystery in which two men enter a Hansom cab and only one man leaves. Then I saw The Mystery of the Hansom Cab based upon the famous book by Fergus Hume (although I never heard of it) in which two men enter a Hansom cab and only one man leaves. Numerous factors are very similar, drunk helped into cab by former friend now enemy, incriminating documents stolen from drunk by slicing open a hidden pocket in his coat, drunk killed by pouring chloroform down his throat then sticking his handkerchief in his mouth, his coat thrown from the cab for no apparent reason, etc. Other than that, the plots are not terribly familiar but I still felt cheated.

262 It's been weird movie week at Rancho naturalfake -

1) "Day of the Beast" - oddball black comedy about a priest who figures out that the AntiChrist will be born this Christmas in Madrid. He decides to commit sins to blacken his soul so that he can meet Satan, get the location of the AntiChrist's birth and kill the AntiChrist before he brings about the end of the world. Only the priest is very naive and ineffectual, so comedy and hijinks ensue. Well written, great acting, nice direction, good laughs. Streaming on Amazon for $1.99.

2) "The Soul" - Taiwanese movie streaming on Netflix. Have you ever watched a movie, where you are just hooked and really enjoying it and then they throw something at you toward the end that just ruins the experience? That's "The Soul". It involves a prosecutor who is dying of cancer trying to figure out a murder case that involves a possible ghost, a possible curse, and high tech genetic manipulation. I'm telling you this intense mofo had me riveted until right about 3/4 through. I'm not going to give spoilers. You'll recognize the moment when it comes, and you'll either roll with it or you won't. I decided to finish the movie, but (con't)

As for Bonds, he was HOF-worthy before roids. As for roids, where was the roid rage? He had the best plate discipline of anyone during this time and could go from 0-2 to a walk in 4 pitches.

After the first few, his formula was clear (unknown evil person/persons in the group of characters, sabotaging and killing without being discovered until the end of the book), and I got bored of the novels.

Good wrting and always fast paced, but the unknown spy or criminal remaining unknown, even in a small group in remote locations, got too improbable for me to take.

The unknown evil mastermind schtick got too crazy to take in a novel about sabotage of the Alaska Pipeline. The guy was a former New York City financial wizard who got the job of operations manager of a huge plant in Canada that heated tar sand to extract the petroleum. Financial guy becomes instant expert in the pipeline and tar sands industries to set up a blackmail scheme...yeah, no way.

I don't think I'll recommend it because of the 3/4 thru dealio. YMMV. Very well acted, everyone is great. Intense great directing and storyline. Logical plotting without cheats despite "the twist". Check it out.

"Kafka" - Steven Sodererg's 1991 movie about "Kafka". Nicely directed, well-written, fantastically acted, fake Kafka biography as it might have been written by Kafka. Great actors in almost every part including Alec Guiness, Jeremy Irons, Joel Grey, Ian Holm among others. The story concerns Kafka investigating the disappearance of a friend that leads to revolutionaries. Philosophically, the movie is about what is the be the future, what is the 20th century to be. Strangely, relevant to these here days. Highly recommended. Dark comedy. Consistently entertaining and amusing in a Kafkaesque way.

Soderberg himself hates the movie and will be releasing a re-edited version thru Criterion IIRC this summer.

Hard to find but does streaming occasionally. Check it out.

Winning My Wings, by Marion Stegeman Hodgson about her time as a WASP pilot in WWII with some interesting info about the formation of the WASPs and the women pilots responsible for its creation. Incredibly engaging book and an easy read about women you probably haven't heard much about.

We Band of Angels about Army nurses taken prisoner in the Phillipines during WWII. I didn't know as much as I should about the war in the Phillipines outside of MacArthur promising to return (but I didn't understand how or why he left or was even there in the first place), that the Bataan death march was horrible, or that movie with Benjamin Bratt about a great prison break. This book puts all of it together AND talks about the war from the captured nurses and civilians' perspective.

Conclusion, the Japanese were as bad or worse than the Germans.

315 Ace,
Used to have very bad planar fascitis

It can be cured by stretching your toes back, using your other foot. Use the heel of the opposite foot and stretch the toes for a few minutes before you go to slee and when you wake up.

It will resolve itself in about a week.

Good luck!

316 I've been reading a web-novel called "The Wandering Inn". Thing's so addictive I've even been skipping the Morning Report (which turns out to be good for both my mood and my blood pressure, unfortunately. I like to stay informed, but when the news is all bad ... ::sigh::

317 Maclean's novels that went to the screen were good, even if the movie sucked (Ice station zebra? Great book. Movie? Bleh).

But some of my favorites never went to the silver screen. Fear is the Key is fantastic. I love San Andreas. And MacLean apparently really didn't like the Japanese: South by Java Head has a Nazi that ends up being a good guy compared to the Japanese in that WWII novel.

Both HMS Ulysses and San Andreas drew on his WWII merchant marine service in the Arctic convoys so they just seem more real.

I suspect that like others, if I went back and reread most of them they wouldn't be quite as good as when I first read them as a teen. Oddly, I liked Force 10 from Navarone (the book) better than the Guns of Navarone. Not sure why. Maybe it was the stolen train scene. Hilarious.

318 Gainzz. Been doing the kale salad thing for a little more than a month. Nearly every day. ( i think I missed only 5 days ) Down 12 lbs.! Has totally ended my cravings for sweets or chocolate

I prep the greens the nite before--about 1/3 kale to 2/3 either romaine or dandelion greens (or both). I use a really good extra virgin olive oil and some sea salt and squeeze some grapefruit juice onto it. I think leaving it overnight helps soften the kale. Then in the morning I add cut up grapefruit, (i cut it so that some of the pith is still on) i add a handful of blueberries and sliced avocado. Sometimes I use apple cider vinegar with the olive oil instead of the grapefruit juice.

In any case, I eat it late morning and then don't eat anything else until supper. That's usually a protein and veges and some type of potato.

I was hoping it would help with the chronic pain issues as well as weight loss, but I'm not sure I see a difference yet.

Really enjoying it though, so I'm going to keep it going.

319 It's really good so far. I can't recommend it yet, given that I've only read the first few chapters

I highly recommend it. That first page, where it says "Where Eagles Dare"? Excellent. Couldn't put it down until I read that third word!

321 I would assume the Dr. had blood work done? If not, get some.

Gout will show up in the heels, feet and ankles. That's what I had for years off and on till it started with other areas and got worse.

With your dieting it might be you're high in PURINES which causes gout.

Get it checked for as there is a simple and cheap medicine to take to rebalance your system and be pain free.

322 Bruh I had plantar fasciitis for MONTHS. Almost 6 actually and it sucked like a commie AG candidate at Soros' tit. I hope you get over it faster than I did.

I've been doing low carb and intermittent fasting for a little over a week now and doing well. I hope to continue seeing pound-a-day loss for at least another week then it's off to a Florida beach vacay. I'm telling myself I will make an attempt to limit my carbs at the restaurants and not go nuts.

323 I'm going through planar fasciitis attack I get every spring. Sit on my ass all winter then first warm day think I can ride 30 miles on my bike. The exercises you can google are *very* helpful.

324 Use the athletic stretchy tape (DUK tape) to support the arch as it heals.

325 MacLean books are a lot of fun. The only problem is that once you figure out the the almost inevitable, repeated plot device, the next book is simply a wait for it to be revealed.

326 The one Lynch movie I couldn't make it through once I started was "Inland Empire".

I got seriously bored, which is a rare experience when I'm watching a Lynch flick.

But, it was streaming, so I thought I would catch it another time maybe when I was more in the mood but I never did.

Highly intellectual surrealism is a young man's game?

Maybe so.
