Here's a write-up:
The Young Martyr was completed in 1855, the year before his death. The paintingis a depiction of the death of a young female Christian Martyr in the 3rd Century A.D during the reign of the Roman Emperor Dioletian. This painting is sometimes referred to as the Christian Ophelia because of its resemblance to Shakespeare's character Ophelia in Hamlet. The similarities lie in the assumption that both characters drowned. One difference is that Ophelia took her own life while The Young Martyr had her life taken from her. The painting, although undoubtedly beautiful is also disturbing. It is disturbing not only for its subject matter, but because there is something so life-like about the girl despite the obvious fact that she is dead. When looking at the painting, it feels as if she has only just died. The feeling evoked is so strong; one almost feels that if only one could have been present a few seconds previously one might have been able to prevent her death. There are dark figures in the upper left hand corner that appears to be a man on a horse with a woman at his side. Presumably, they are the horrified parents of the young woman in the water. Although a lot of detail of the background is obscured (can't tell if it is deliberate or not), the way the water enfolds the girl's body is tellng. At least to me. She is both supported, almost incorporated, by the water. The way the colors of the green (living?) Water merges with thw white of her gown and skin tones seems protective. And water shows movement, transporting the body of the young saint away from those who killed her. The dark background is a stark aspect compared to the light, gentle color of the protective water. This isn't Perseus rescuing Andromeda since the death has happened. It is a gentler image of salvation for the faithful girl. I wonder if it was supposed to be that subtle.
I would love to see a Frazetta using those translucent greens in a water painting. Posted by: JTB at May 06, 2021 09:17 AM (7EjX1) Posted by: Muldoon at May 06, 2021 09:18 AM (Fc5rx) 127
There are dark figures in the upper left hand corner that appears to be a
man on a horse with a woman at his side. Presumably, they are the horrified parents of the young woman in the water. That's possible, but in CBD's linked image, looks to me like the man is holding a small mast and sail for the boat. The woman appears to be hanging onto him in fright at seeing her body. There were a great number of young women martyred in the early days of Christianity, some of whom are now included in the liturgy of the Traditional Latin Mass.
It became fashionable among wealthy Romans to marry young Christian women because they were guaranteed pure. But when they continued to be pure, their husbands got fed up with them and offed them. Posted by: Zombie Robbo the Llama Butcher at May 06, 2021 09:19 AM (dfRN6) 130

The shape of the canvas is telling. That distinctive shape was traditionally used for niche paintings and especially altarpiece panels. The shape can enhance the subject further.
Also, in this link CBD provided, this is a reproduction of the original, most likely for mass production--prints and such, made several decades later. This helps with the dark details, but engraving artists have been known to add their own flair to the works. So the copy might not be totally faithful. https://tinyurl.com/2wwd7vyx Posted by: Kris at May 06, 2021 09:21 AM (OyyDO) Posted by: Muldoon at May 06, 2021 09:21 AM (Fc5rx) 134

OT over 100, carried forward from the MR.
Joondeph is right about testing being one of the main reasons for no influenza this year. In a typical flu season, most diagnoses of influenza are presumptive, based on symptom patterns and knowledge of what bugs are prevalent in the nation or community. Asymptomatic people are essentially never tested for flu. Mildly symptomatic people are seldom tested, they are sent home to self-manage at home symptomatically. People with stronger symptoms will more than likely get a rapid antigen detection test in the ER or clinic to help guide how aggressive therapy should be. This requires a higher viral load to be positive than the amplification tests like RT-PCR, especially at high cycle thresholds. The deployment of 35-45 cycle PCR tests in asymptomatic individuals for "diagnosis,"or for contact tracing, or clearance for travel or return to work/school was a vain and feeble gesture at trying to "control. the spread" of the virus and should go down in history as one of the most shameful misapplications of medical knowledge ever.
