42 I tried Soylent when it started. Not the packaged stuff, because you couldn't get it. But they had a build-your-own-Soylent and I worked out a VERY cheap pea-based drink using their calculator.

I have often said that "every diet works" because I have managed to lose weight on every diet. (Maintaining the diet is always the problem.)

But on Soylent, after a week, I was borderline insane with hunger. In retrospect, I suspect it was using the RDA guidelines for calories which are way carb heavy, and using too simple a carb base.

But I was ready to murder. Very weird feeling, much stronger than fasting for five or six days.

69 NYC effectively decriminalized it simply by asking a judge to drop a bunch of old cases and getting rid of a specific loitering law.

In many cases, that is more legal jeopardy for the john because the law is still there but the DA has discretion in pursuing it. Also expect more sex trafficking to go to NYC.

We have looked at your pretty area. Spent a lot of time looking at there and NH - which also has crazy high property taxes that are basically rent to the state. Not good on a retiree income. I do not mind the snow but I am trying to find a deminimus tax area. Washington state as long as you are out of Seattle looks good, but I want to settle my kids down too (where there are jobs!). I think - think, mind you - the trick to keeping away the locusts is to willingly be an area that's not too prosperous. That's why Texas is screwed. They've got several big cities that are booming - due to a very pro-business climate. Now, you're seeing the carpet baggers come from all over to get theirs - and they're bringing all their emotional and political baggage along for the ride. Sooner rather than later - the Texas Boom will grind to a halt because of it - the carpet baggers will move on to the next area to pillage - and Texas will be left holding the bag for a bunch of infrastructure they no longer need.
Until states can pass residency laws for voting in state or local elections, I have no idea how to solve this - other than willingly refusing too much affluence too quickly in your own little town.

Our small-town mayor moved a few years ago from the south side of town (where he had advance knowledge that a mini-storage was going in across the street, that dirtbag) all the way to the north side of town. Bought himself a *whopping* 1.5 acres.

He then went to the county and asked how he could go about getting in on some of that sweet sweet ag-exemption.

They laughed his ass out of the building. "On what? Your back yard?"

Ag exemptions can save you a ton of money, but you do have to meet some prereqs. Minimum amount of acreage, at least a nominal attempt at owning livestock or *cough* "growing feed hay." Oh, and once the property loses it's ag exemption, it can't become exempt again for, I think, five years.

I'm not sure you can even find property in this neck of the woods anymore. The influx of New Yorkers and New Jersians is something to behold. The home builders I work with are saying they will not even talk to a prospective client until 2022 at the earliest. Last November I was told the little town of Bondville at the base of Stratton Mountain had seen an increase of permanent residents by 10K since the start of the China flu. Lots of people converting seasonal ski residencies to full time. The town has no grocery store (does have a gas station with a 7-11 though) and I'm pretty sure they don't even have a school. I'm guessing the infrastructure in a lot of places here is going to collapse soon.

A while back on one of those hot and hum high 90s summer days, I had to do some extensive welding. It was so hot, I couldn't stand a heavy shirt, much less a coat, so I just welded in my T-shirt. The spark shower wasn't too bad -- I'd get the occasional sting, but that was better than sweating and burning up.

So I thought. I'd done that many times before, but for short durations. Here I was doing serious welding. Hour or better of arc exposure.

It's interesting to look at the spectrum -- you can find some references. It varies with the type of welding and the material being welded.

IIRC, MIG puts off even more UV generally that stick welding. The heavy stick smoke from the burning flux absorbs more of the UV apparently than Argon/CO2 mixes.

270 That's from the lead or formaldehyde poisoning. It's ok though. Drink lots of water.
Posted by: Marcus T at April 21, 2021 03:03 PM

I'm thinking formaldehyde. It would explain why I'm so well preserved.

I've thought for a while we should give people a "buy out" plan for their citizenship.
Think America is a horrible racist country that can't be redeemed? Here is your voucher for $10K and a free one way plane ticket. Sign here and your citizenship is revoked and you are not allowed to step foot in the country again and you are done.

280 Note about South and North Korea: The first week would be pretty rough, but after that South Korea would roll over North Korea all the way to the Yalu River. The only thing that's prevented it is us being there. And the reason we've prevented it is that the Chinese would almost certainly intervene again, which could get very ugly in a potentially nuclear way. There is no plausible scenario where North Korea alone (without Chinese help) defeats South Korea.

I know it's not the "will end badly" you had in mind, but I can't think of "tequila tasting event" without wondering whether you mean the first time you taste it, or the one a few hours later. They are both tequila tasting events.

286 But on the topic of booze...I never have found a beer I like.

Bourbon now, well I just discovered Knob Creek small batch 9 year old...that's some tasty stuff. 100 proof, so a bit of a punch behind it.

Any chance that one or both were not wearing seatbelts, and the drive got catapulted from behind the wheel to another position? Or was the owner attempting to "drive by wire", using a smartphone to operate the car?
