Stimulus checks are being spent on dildos, tigers, guns and stripper poles
I can think of worse things to spend the money on. I still haven't received one yet, I got a letter saying that I would get one, but so far, nada. Personally, I'm against stimulus checks at all, but if they're going to send them out, then I'm not too proud to spend the money. In other news, Congress passed their latest “recovery” bill, and it made an interesting change to Obamacare subsidies. Previously, subsidies were limited to people who made < 400% of the federal poverty level for their family size. This bill eliminates that cap, and instead says that subsidies are available for anyone whose insurance premiums exceed 8 ½ % of their AGI. This got me thinking. Lets take a family of 5, husband, wife, both 45, and 3 kids. Put them in WV and give them an AGI of $150K. Most of us would say that they're doing pretty well, right? 8.5% of their income is $12,750. They could buy the top plan on the exchange, a pretty darn good plan with only a 1600 deductible, which would run them $48,204/year (Admittedly I chose WV for this example because it has some of the highest rates in the country) and get a check from Uncle Sugar for $35,000. I haven't found anything that says that this is not the way it would work. I ran it by my boss who though the subsidy might be limited to silver plans (in which case the check would be 29K, not 35), but we bucked it up to corporate counsel to be sure. Haven't heard back yet. Meanwhile, the same family making $50K could get a subsidy that would knock their premium down to nothing – but that plan has a $15,000 deductible. This is just nuts, the feds shoveling money they don't have out the door to people who don't need it. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that white, upper middle class folks are a core constituency of the Democrats. This is madness.
Thursday Night At The Movies So, does anyone have any somewhat obscure movies they'd like to recommend? I have 2. First is Tag. I saw it a few years ago (I may have mentioned it back then) and just rewatched it this week. Based upon a true story, It Takes Planning, Caution to Avoid Being 'It', it's about a group of friends who have been playing the same game of tag for over 23 years. It's not high cinema, but it's laugh at loud funny at times. My wife and I really enjoyed watching it. The Emperor's New Groove. I decided to watch this because scenes from it are often featured in memes (which makes sense because it came out in 2000, and all the Gen-Z meme kiddies would have watched it as children), and since I see a lot of memes while looking for ONT content, I figured I should know the source material.
Anyhow, it's a short (just over an hour) animated film starring David Spade playing himself as the emperor of a South American empire that is not named but is definitely based upon the Incas. As part of your routine Disney palace intrigue, he's turned into a llama and has to make his way back to the palace to regain his crown, all the while learning that the real prize is the friends you make along the way. It's not Toy Story, but it moves right along and I found myself chuckling more than once. How about it Horde, What are your semi-obscure movie recommendations?

This here is why there aren't more people screaming bloody murder over all the crazy economic shit that's going down. As long as the money printers go BRRRT and people are either getting paid to file TPS reports at their corporate job or getting paid slightly less to do nothing at all (unemployment bonuses), most don't have much reason to care. She made a cameo in the 400s the last thread IIRC, said it felt like someone else was in her back meaning the incision pain is burning through the meds which sucks.
Of course having had experience with LOTS of surgeries over the years and rather enjoying the healing experience it also means her wounds are knitting most likely properly.

I was unemployed for most of 2020 and have been getting reduced payouts since they used 2019 tax data to decide who's rich and who's not. I didn't really need it since I was stockpiling cash for a while, but it's a perfect illustration of why government solutions aren't very effective: those actually directly and significantly impacted by the mayhem get less than the Non Essentials (tm) who merely had to suffer the indignity of being able to work remotely.

I collected unemployment for most of the year too as I wasn't 65 for most of it and took a buyout in '19.
I received a letter from the IRS last week that said the fed tax rules changed due the last Covid relief bill and unemployment benefits are now not taxable at the federal level so, they will recalc my 2020 return and slide some green my way.
We are so screwed.

His run ran from reboot issues 19 through 63, with a strange but comprehensible storyline involving weird philosophy, weird dimensions, weird characters, and pretty much took the DC weirdness pre-Crisis and ramped it so far past eleven DC had no idea how to keep the money flowing when he finished his story and left the series.
So they brought in someone else, told them to be weird, and didn’t worry about crap like plot, characterization, and making sense. They probably still don’t understand why sales tanked. That’s when Codpiece came in.

Went to WalMart, across the street. Still "requiring" masks, but they are lax on enforcing it. One of the mask Nazis made some remark as I went in, and I just carried on walking. A fair number of unmasked customers, too.
Harbor Freight was all about wearing masks, so I drove past, did not enter. Got what I needed at Shoppers' Supply, which has taken down all their mask signage.

I like that movie a lot. Didn’t live up to its potential, but still a neat idea. Supposedly part of the post-Watergate era, but a lot of people at the time noticed that the villain was a government bureaucrat, not a politician. And a lot of the beltway class excoriated it for that, under the guise of it somehow playing to flat-earthers.

When the mask madness starts hitting the small businesses in the bottom line, they will have to drop it. The chains, like HF, and WM, are probably waiting on authorization from head office. One enough States drop the mandate, the chain head offices will probably tell their locals to drop the mask requirement, or to just look the other way when it is flouted.

I was laughing BECAUSE I understood the subject matter aged 11.
I grew up by a SAC base and given the "we are all GWANNA DIE" hysteria about Reagan I *had* to know so I read EVERY bit of literature available the year prior and so when the time came and they played it to show us solemnly "how bad it will be" I started giggling.
Freaked my classmates out, teacher stopped the video and asked me what was so funny thinking I was to be shamed.
"Ma'am at this distance with a Hi Low hit we are inside the thermal radius and we will not feel a thing and it is not a slow star trek disintegration we will just snap flash and be a mark.
Fun times.

Walmart tried to do a mask mandate here before the Governor even tried. The place was empty other than people picking up their prescriptions. Now, with the governor's mandate they have two people at the door trying to get people to put them on. Oddly enough my county has always been near the lowest rate of infection and we lack in masking and taking the vaccine.

So it is like this, it overcomes a horrible performance by Rianna Gosling or whatever its name is. James Garner God rest his moonbat soul could act his ass off. Yes the lesson is dumb, yes the wrong guy "won" the courtship but at the end of the day that is how life works out.
Wife Olafson and sven did not fall in love and start dating in 1984. Sven was already a drunk and a hellion and wife was a good girl, Sven had fallen in love with a girl crying because a guy that wound up being a glee ganger had broken her heart and Sven had never seen someone cry with their whole body like that.
Wife dated several other guys, and Sven drifted and fell deeper and deeper into addiction, work, and relationships of his own but he always kept an eye on wife to be. When an asshole broke wife to be's heart his sophomore year and her freshman year and the guy came into sven's ROTC classroom they were in together sven beat him to a pulp almost getting expelled.
Sobering up over the next year to get ready for the Army wife to be finally met sven and they became friends.
Wife's mom was less than thrilled.

It was even more depressing because of who played the main protagonist. John Boy Walton is an insufferably shitty actor and I couldn't wait until the last scene.

Dude went to the bomb bay and put on the air of a tour guide, and said, pointing at the interior of the bomb bay, "And, ladies and gentlemen, this is where Slim Pickens jumped on the bomb - " The plane's crew cut him off. "You know, when that movie was made, most of the B-52s systems were classified..." A huge discussion of Dr. Strangelove ensued. Good times.

I've only seen "After Hours", when it came out in the theater. The Village bar make-out scene is hilarious - it comes out of left-field. That's probably the first thing that comes to my mind remembering that flick.

I was looking. Comparing wealth over history is extremely difficult, likely impossible, because what we value changes and all that. But the comparisons are fairly meaningful over the last couple centuries or so.
I think it was John. D. Rockefeller who holds the title of richest ever at $400B in today's dollars.
So Bezos isn't there yet, but he's halfway.

I agree on his early novels - The Stand is still in my top three novels of all time - but Mr. King must be read in moderation. He lacks artistic restraint and never knows when to "close the sale" and move on. Mr. King being a dickhead and barking moonbat exacerbates matters.

They had that glee ganger to be sitting court at the head of their table and he spent all his time slagging on these high achieving kids. Most of them were in the band so wife was there orbiting these future PhDs and High Level Engineers.
I started sitting with them, I was after all an honors history and econ student and finally I snapped at the glee ganger and told him to go f8ck himself and hang at the school nurse's or I would send him there. Over time I kind of became a battery for them, and we took to helping each other with the classes we were gifted in where others' were weak. I flirted with wife to be, and made her friends there laugh.
I learned a lot of leadership at that table, whereas prior to that I was just a gifted a*8hole.

I had a discectomy in 2003 and I would never have one again. It was the worst pain I was ever in, and I have had 2 babies. I couldn't sleep lying down so I was in sleeping sitting up for 6 weeks. I couldn't turn my head because it was at C5 and C6 and the pain felt like hot pokers in my spine and head. I couldn't ride in the car and my husband and kids had to do everything for me. Nope, never again. I have a titanium rod with plates and screws holding things together and now I have arthritis in my neck. I hope yours goes so much better.

Arthritis is going after me too. I have foraminal stenosis in my spine at C3-4 and my doc wants to operate there and at C5-6 as well. Not sure what I want to do. In the meantime I have muscle weakness in my right arm.

Now, funny thing was J. P. Morgan. When he died, his personal wealth was only would be only about $40B in today's dollars. Rockefeller famously quipped, hell, he owned us all, but he was poor or something like that.
Morgan did control far more money that Rockefeller. Far more. He controlled trillions in today's dollars. He famously bailed out the US Treasury one time.
He did through basically banking and having his people on boards of all the major players the world over. Thus while he didn't personally own a lot, he controlled a hell of a lot of money.

Mine is in the lumbar region (L5-S1), so no BLT (no bending, no lifting more than 5 lbs, no twisting at the waist).
Currently wearing a back brace and use a cane to get around.
Getting up is most difficult from a prone position, so I have plenty of pillows to prop me up.

I had to sit thru the "extremism stand down" training too recently (DoD civilian here).
The Notebook was enjoyable. Mrs Doof and I recently watched a whole slew of films that were based on Nicholas Sparks books. Mostly enjoyable. Predictable and lots of recurring themes (set in North or South Carolina, someone dies, there's ALWAYS a rain storm). There's usually decent music in those films.

My neurosurgeon wants me to have the surgery ASAP but I want to go on a tough weight loss regimen for six months first, and see if that helps my arm. My own primary care physician today told me, that would probably be a good idea.
In the meantime I'm gonna see another neurosurgeon for a second opinion, and look into non-surgical options as well. I believe there's a steroidal epidural that can also help me regain strength, but not sure.

The 2 times it really set in was once in an italian restaurant, we had a really nice waitress, very friendly, was very good, and all you can see was her eyes above her sparkle mask, which were nice. You couldn't even see her smile. Then last week I was sitting outside a deli in the car and this blond chick comes out the door. Long blond hair blowing in the wind and built like a brick shithouse. I've been on a break from bourbon for about 2 weeks. Had a bit too much one night with my buddy. Ok - WAY too much!! We were drinking something I call "Kentucky lemonade". 2 parts lemonade, 1 part bourbon, 1 part triple sec. They go down way too easily and they sneak up on you. We both went from Zero to HAMMERED very quickly.
I think I'll celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior on Sunday by reacquainting myself with my bourbon collection.

An edict I expect to come (J-POW has started throwing a little shade on Bitcoin). By federal decree (think FDR's gold confiscation), all cryptocurrency is now illegal. All transactions in it are now federal felonies. That will be done world wide.
To do bitcoin, you need computing power and the internet. And the grid. Who controls all that? And who could pull the plug on all that fairly easily if they wanted to?

That is the current thinking and theory. But I don't know about that. The current theory holds that stability demands some small inflation rate, your sweet spot.
Evidence for this is the "free banking era" of the 19th Century when the currency was tied to gold. Long term, you had about zero inflation, but short term you had wild swings. Booms with high inflation, followed by crashes with ripping deflation.
The money supply must expand with the economy (which depends on population and such). A country will 300 million people needs more money in circulation than a country with only 30 million.
Now, note that pegging a currency to gold limits the money creation (which can be a very bad thing), but it limits things greatly when their is a crisis of liquidity.
Now, pegging a currency to gold (or whatever) is very different from pure fiat with a target inflation rate of zero.

Current thinking is that if you targeted zero inflation with monetary policy, you get that wild instability of the 19th century. But the difference between pure fiat and gold is great.
There are many, and I've read 'em, who believe you can target zero inflation with perfect stability, and even allow small deflation with it.

I had a one-on-one meeting today with the big boss. Got another good tongue-lashing, but:
1. He said they understood my objections, and would accommodate me in the future, HOWEVER
2. Since I did break the rules (which I never denied and actually forthrightly acknowledged), he still had to punish me.
So I'm suspended a week without pay, and I have a letter placed in my file. Which I told them I thought was fair. I'll get an extra week to spend with my wife before her mastectomy, and if anyone ever asks about the letter in my file I will absolutely not be ashamed to tell them everything.
It wasn't pleasant, but I think it turned out OK. I'll offer some more thoughts in a subsequent comment.

I think it's a few things: First, I live and work in an extremely red area of the country, so I think the bosses are sensitive to local mores. (It was mentioned to me that I was far from the first employee who'd been in this situation).
Second: I think age played a role. I'm 45, and even though my bosses are all far to the left of me, they're also all older than me, some by a lot. So they're probably a lot less tuned into the latest woke nonsense. One even made a non-PC joke about "sensitivity training."
So I guess my message is that all is not lost...YET. The world outside the internet is messed up, sure, but not nearly as far gone.
But God help us when the younger Red Guards take over...

I always loved "Payback" with Mel Gibson. Do Not get the "Director's Cut" version. It blows big time. A 1st time director who idolized Sam Pickinpah, and tried to make this movie similar to "The Wild Bunch". Epic Fail. Since Gibson was Executive Producer or something. When looking at the cut decided to fire the slub, and re-cut it. So it wasn't so dark, and make funny (in a dark way). Porter becoming the bad guy (Anti-hero) that you see from time to time in movies. The book it was biased on, "The Hunter" by Richard Stark (pen name). Wrote this back in the 50's I believe. The publisher came back to him and told him to rewrite the ending, so he get's away with it. It spawned a whole series. I have some on my Nook, but never got at around to reading them. I did recently just stumbled on them, and I reading them now...kind of. Lee Marvin stared in a movie biased on the same book in the 60's. Very different.

Right after 9/11 I had to make several trips to DC for work. Usually a shuttle from Boston to Reagan was about 4-hours all in, including getting to/from the airport, security, etc. Because they weren't running I took Acela - 8-hours, but overall not a horrible experience. Clean, quiet.
Next month the Acela was booked so I had to take a "regular" train. Some of the longest 12+ hours of my life. Loud, smelly, cramped, with all the "service" you've come to expect of quasi-public operations.
And that's Choo-Choo Joe's "vision" for our travel futures. Making what used to be a 8-10 hour end-to-end coast-to-coast flight into a 4+ day ordeal.
