Quarantine Cafe: Just Two Quokkas Having a Nosh Edition

CGI visual effects artists evaluate the special effects used to fake the moon landing.

Or, should I say, Moon " " " Landing " " ".

Screenshot (322).png

Petting Finnegan Fox.

Bulldog was afraid of everything.

But loves helicopter rides.

The bulldog has a weird nervous habit -- it walks backwards, to guard its rear, I guess.

A pair of strays are inseparable.

Woman says that the weird-looking dogs she's rescued help her with her severe hospitalization-level anxiety.

In Australia they call this the "Joe Biden owl."

Let's check in with Australia, where God put all of the animals who want to kill you:

Okay, this last one, featuring The Happiest Animal on Earth (TM), the quokka, is very cute, but, not gonna lie, at first you're gonna say "Get that nasty mutant garbage out of here."

But remember, it's a marsupial!

41 One of my little girl dogs developed a fear of heights, and shiny floors. I have no idea how it started, and I always felt terrible for her. I didn't know if maybe she had eye problems, and couldn't discern what was going on with shiny floors, but they scared the crap out of her.

And bridges, docks etc. (not good when you hang around piers and boats a lot) scared the bejeebers out of her. I'd have to carry her over footbridges, and she'd slink along as far as she could get from the edge of a pier or any drop-off for that matter. So some department stores with suspended glass escalators were a living hell for the poor thing. Bless her heart.

Get ready for a new category of wrongspeech. Some Harvard academic twit who calls herself a "Scholar of Speech" and runs some Center for [Garbage Terms] has defined a class of speech she calls "Dangerous Speech".

This is distinct from hate speech. Dangerous speech is speech that tends to incite violence by one group against other groups, she says. She's now coming up with techniques to identify it and sell it to Big Tech for more censorship.

So there you go.

I figured I'd see it when the Critical Drinker shreds it. To be fair, I'm not sure it would be possible to do a decent Godzilla movie, ever. It's got way too much baggage, and too many people have expectations one way or the other. Then, you'd have to come up with a "plot" and at some point 2 animals defying the laws of physics and evolution battle it out.

No, not sure they can ever improve on the bad Japanese rubber suit versions, or the high-camp of 2 miniature Japanese girls singing to a giant bug on strings. How many versions have been done by Hollywood now?

One I would like to see is Love and Monsters. I'm so out of the loop I haven't heard squat, and didn't even know it existed. But by the snippets I've seen, it looks fun.

114 41 One of my little girl dogs developed a fear of heights, and shiny floors.

140 Anna it's an hour and covers his whole life so not a lot of depth on specific issues, but it's clear that King's restless and relentless improve it/change it instinct, which he demonstrated from ensign on up, would probably have helped quite a bit in the first rough year of the war. He expected war and didn't think the USN was ready, and pushed where he could for harder training. The battles around Guadalcanal certainly revealed serious personnel and system issues of the sort King's approach *might* have mitigated, to some extent.

176 Eromero - thanks! Already on my list (which is around 700 now). Did read a decent bio of the four five-stars (The Admirals), which of course included King - though it focused more on Leahy. Think it's reasonable to say that King and Leahy are two of the most important/least written about figures from WWII.

Leahy sincerely and effectively shunned the spotlight, very old school, even though he was FDR's right-hand military adviser as well as JCS Chmn, and King limited his press interaction, lacked any PR/promotional instincts at all (the anti-MacArthur). And neither played any post-war role, unlike Marshall or Eisenhower.

It's tentative, but I'm starting to think King was one of the best military leaders of the war (= his druthers and decisions actually stand up very very well in retrospect, and he often was a one-man cause pushing them).

I'm also surprised at how engaging these food war shows are. I laugh at the dramatic background music that makes finding the right pizza crust recipe seem like planning D-Day. I wonder if History Channel recycles music?

187 Anna, an obscure book that is actually very good is The Shame of Savo, written by a retired Australian naval officer who was an ensign at Savo Island aboard the Canberra (so he got to go swimming - and was very nearly killed).

He takes a serious systematic look at key things like communications and coordination to explain how the Japanese inherent advantages (intensive night-combat training, best optics, Long Lances) were magnified tremendously by avoidable or inexcusable failings on the Allied side.

196 King was no picnic in terms of personality but his focus (as sven points out) and intelligence were off the charts. Drach's video noted something I hadn't known - King, as an ensign in his first sea duty, basically took the optical range-finders in use and redesigned them. He was relentless about improving every technology or process he encountered. Drach says his reform of naval education and promotion systems in place at the time (mid-career for him) resulted in a system still pretty much in use today.

Apart from the delay in implementing convoys in US coastal and Caribbean waters, hard to think of a big issue he didn't get exactly right.

In 1937 the TBD was revolutionary with with its power folding wings. It's powerplant was certainly first rate, the R-1830 would also power the F4F and B-24.

It's just the torpedo was third rate with untested detonators and forcing the pilots to fly at a slow speed and altitude just to avoid the fish from breaking apart upon entering the water. What truly doomed the TBD at Midway was the lack of fighter escort.

Only one of six VT-8 Detached TBF-1 Avengers made it back to Midway because of the same torpedo and lack of fighter escort.

Especially when you factor in the raw versatility of the SBD it could stunt double as a scout and a fighter plane in a jam.

According to the show, the Hydrox guy used to work for the National Biscuit Company, got fired, and started up his own company. The NBC was putting out simple cookies but was the first national baking company, by merging a bunch of local bakeries into one big one.
The fired guy created Sunshine Baking Company, and knew a totally different cookie was needed to compete.
Hydrox was born. Except the NBC guy (company had not changed to Nabisco yet) knew Hershey really well and went to him to make a better tasting chocolate wafer.
Oreos blew past Hydrox in a year or two in sales.

BTW, none of this would ever of happened in Communist China. Just saying.

238 The P-38 dates to 1940. And it was encountering control issues in the dive from the start.

Army imposed the external mass balance horns on the tail as one attempt at a fix. Lockheed added fillets that resolved a lot of issues. But compressability was never fully fixed until Kelly Johnson finally beat it into USAAF heads that resulted in the P-38L's getting an electrically driven flap installed on each wing's underside that would deploy before the plane would go into a dive, it disrupted the airflow just enough to allow the pilot to retain control.

259 Leppla and Liska were darn lucky at Coral Sea with their seven victories. SBD stood for Slow But Deadly. Also called the Clunk. And the only real reason it was used as an inner anti torpedo bomber CAP at Coral Sea was again the lack of enough fighters.

Why? The F4F-3 had non-folding wings just like the SBD. So a VF had maybe 18 fighters to protect the carrier and to send out on a strike as escort. Pretty thin resources.

Luckily LeRoy Grumman had a fit of inspiration involving a couple of pencil erasers and a paperclip. So the Wildcat soon had the same folding mechanism as the Avenger and the Hellcat would follow. So carriers could carry more fighters.

(CNN) -- With millions more Americans getting vaccinated every day, some have complained about fever, fatigue and other ailments they weren't expecting.

Don't panic, doctors say. Side effects from COVID-19 vaccines won't last long. And they're actually proof that your immune system is working the way it's supposed to. (Though vaccines are still very effective even without side effects.)

during the great depression you would take bread ideally for economy rye bread and cook up suet and fortify your bread with it.

suet is raw hard fat, there are different grades of ground meat predicated on the content and marble percentages of the grind....

445 10 years ago nobody wore a helmet skiing. Today almost everyone does. It is amazing how that changed overnight. Ive been skiing my whole life and didnt ever wear a helmet. I started to wear one when my kids started skiing about 5 years ago and now it is like a seat belt, never even think twice about it. It is automatic. And it came in handy once when I took a pretty gnarly fall in a chute and slammed against a rock.

Had Bono been wearing one he would probably be alive.

Last week on one of those rerun channels way down the dial, the first Black Sheep show was broadcast. Pretty much as a fan would expect.
The Colonel was a stupid dick, and the General was already covering for Conrad, as his crew shot down 18 zeros, while using false orders to get the planes away from the legit pilots who they were assigned to.
All in the first show.

471 And the P-38 dive speed did not approach anywhere near the speed of sound. There are however compressibility effects that you have to start considering generally around 0.4 Mach. Its dive was less than 0.7 Mach. In a Mach Tuck like the P-38 experienced it's the local flow on the wing that is accelerated producing a small bubble of supersonic flow and shocks that reverse the positive longitudinal stability.

Posted by: Eromero at April 01, 2021 08:05 PM (0OP+5)

Technically, the Skyraider was a WW2 bird. Prototypes were flying before the war was over. Same thing with the F8F Bearcat, there was a squadron working up when the war ended. If the Axis thought they had it bad in 45, they should feel lucky it didn't last til 46. The Allies had some awesome piston stuff that didn't quite make it and because the war ended and they could wait a bit for jets, not many of them were made.

A friend's father ditched an F8F alongside the carrier after engine failure. He was instructing/overseeing new pilots at the time. There was a bit of a funny story about it - he kept telling the air ops guys he was ditching, asking for clearance to do so as a formality. They finally answered when he was in the water, I think, standing on his wing.

There were write-ups about it in the newsletters etc of the time - the clips are all there along with the photos (marked "Classified" on the back) taken by the ship's photographer as the plane did a perfect ditch landing.

That seems like a horrible idea. You would never want it to happen asymmetrically and I don't know how you'd prevent that. And it forces you to pull your ailerons inboard and you always want to design your ailerons as far outboard for control effectivity. You'd do better to just design in passive load alleviation probably for the same weight penalty as your break-away wing.
