Wizard Casts ONT!

Friday night has come 'round at last. This week I have a higher number of videos than normal, lots of the normal crap fished from the bottom of the internet and a response to Muldoon. Hope everybody had a good week, and whatever happened, at least you're not Wichita Falls, Tx.

Pretty cool

Meanwhile, I had planted beans and sugar snap peas in my garden and they hadn't sprouted. I was frustrated, these are the seeds they give to kindergartners to sprout in a wet paper towel, and I can't grow them in dirt? Unreal. They finally sprouted a few days ago, so nevermind.

25 Well, that was easy.

The builder won the case against the onvestors because the blueprints, contrary to the cited story here, did, in fact, include the standard abbreviation for "inches" after the number 480, thus:

Height: 480"

So inattention on the part of the investors, not provable* fraud, lost them their money and their case.

*of course, we all know and so did the judge exactly what happened - it was a scam. But a " is a " and that decides the case.

I laughed my ass off at the D&D thing partly because fireball was my first thought as well. The nice thing about D&D fireballs is that their effects end at precisely so many feet (depends on caster level) from the center, so you totally can damage only the door and leave everything else in the shop intact.

100 Well I'm going to say I have a 50% chance of being correct on *that* question. Cuz 0% is clearly wrong and they list 25% twice, so the answer has to be either 25% (for a random 1 in 4) or 50%.

Of course if I'm a cat and absolutely only randomly pressing one of the 4 buttons than its 25%.

This trips me up often with puzzles like that. What is the exact meaning of random in this case?

260 So I am eating some Samyang Buldak. I didn't know this existed even a week ago. It is the infamous Korean version of ramen, called "fire noodles" by a lot of Americans.

To be honest, I am eating the "light" version. It is supposed to be 40 percent less hot. I also threw in some cheese, milk and butter to tame the flame. And of course i dressed it up with some grilled chicken thighs, garlic, and green onions. I am new to ramen or ramyun, but for sure the key is adding ingredients to make it your own and to make it something special.

One weird thing I noticed right off was people talking about putting American cheese in their Ramen. The first few times I though these people were nuts, that did not sound Asian to me at all. Turns out, the Koreans are crazy about melted cheese and many put it in everything. And it is supposed to help with the extreme spices

273 correction it is not the only version of Korean Ramyun. It is one brand but the flavor is based on a common Korean dish called fire chicken. Anyway, if you check the youtube for the fire noodle challenge, you will get a lot of hits. I am working my way into this slowly. I bought the stuff what am I going to do? I didn't know it was famous or infamous at all when I bought it at the local ethnic store. I just wanted some Korean ramen because people said the quality was better.

That probability puzzle at the end with the cat is an example of a self-referential expression. The stuff that gave Kurt Godel a hard-on.

It's of the same character as the following:

A) The following statement is true
B) The previous statement is false

That is a self-negating paradox. It is degenerate. The probability depends on what answer you choose, which then changes the probability.

Self-references can do that. They can be logically consistent, but they can also be completely inconsistent.

The instant coffee part rings true to a lot of the research I have been doing in recent days. We have a vibrant Korean American community here and where I grew up. But even some basic research can give you some insights. I would get the instant coffee thing came out of the Korean experience after the war, and also because they have universal service. The American cheese thing came out of the war and Cold War experiences. And I don't doubt instant coffee can be good. It is funny that most Americans think of it as a relic of the 70s.

431 WTF dude?

Posted by: Tarragon at March 26, 2021 11:41 PM (LWu6U)

432 The question stipulates that we must "guess" the answer. Obviously, providing accurate answers would make it impossible to "guess" the answer. A "guess" is something that happens when you don't have the necessary information. It's when you pick the answer at random from the available options.

The options in this case are "A", "B", "C", and "D". Any numeric values attached to those numbers are purely misleading entries, meant to deceive the viewer into thinking that they mean something. The question involves a "guess". If the additional text could provide useful information, then we could make an "educated guess", or perhaps an "informed guess". But we are not allowed to do so. Ergo, the numbers are completely useless to our purposes. Doubtless, they were left there by someone attempting to confuse the issue, and cannot be trusted to be related at all to the letters that they have been seemingly randomly assigned to.

The question is, "Which is the right answer?"

As I noted above, the answers are "A", "B", "C", and "D". There are four possible answers. If we are truly "guessing" the answer, then there is a 1 in 4 chance of getting it right.

Set up the cranes on the Ever Given, sail a ship up on either side, swap their cargo with the cranes, and have each ship back out and deliver their new load of big metal boxes.

gun shows in Virginia are historically as common as farmer's markets. I would say Virginia has had a gun show almost every other weekend for the last 50 years. Posted by: runner at March 26, 2021 11:55 PM (zr5Kq)

475 I think the fastest way to get the Ever Given back into the Navigation Channel, will be to float-in a pair of large suction dredges. One upstream of and the other downstream of the obstructive vessel.

Shouldn't take 'em but about a day to not only remove enough sand under the hull to effect free movement, but also to carve out about 20 ft. around the bow & stern shapes, to easier effect the "swing" when the tugs start to move the ship. They're trying to brute force it out of there with multiple tugs, which might work, but might not. Removing sand WILL work. Question being though.. how far away are the dredges? (not far, I'd bet. Suez is a never ending dredge project, even if only for maintenance.)

Every tugboat owned by the Foss Tug company is named after a family Foss member, in the old days.
If you are around big ships and salt water anywhere on the left coast, from Alaska to Long Beach, you know the green and white tugboats that work around here.

And the founder is Mrs Thea Foss, who has an entire waterway in Commencement Bay named after her.
The reason why they also have other non-Foss named ships and tugs in their fleet, is because they bought out other companies over the years.
Henry Foss, of Foss High School fame in Tacoma, was her son and a major Tacoma business leader in his day.

I chose it because all of the primary controls are metal, Analog Dials, in pretty much the same arrangement as on the Nikon FE 35mm film camera. Hence, all of my photographic knowledge and muscle memory carries to this model. Now though, I'm having to learn all the electronic stuff & menus & buttons on the back of the camera. And there is a LOT to learn there.

If you wanted a Purdey, and have to ask how much it would cost, you couldn't afford it, as the old saying goes. If you want to buy one -- well, buy isn't really the word. You would make enquiries with James Purdey & Sons, LTD, and if they decided you were Purdey material, then they will fly you out to their range.

They will then take detailed measurements and observations of your shooting style, and custom fit the gun to you. The price of all that is included with the gun.

608 Arms & Armor isn't exactly a store, more of a website, but it would not take me long to rack up a $5k bill in fine rapiers. They do show up at ren faires so maybe that would qualify...or rather, they did show up at ren faires back in ye olden days when our royal overlords allowed us to congregate.

Really concerned that the repro sword industry may not survive this shit.

612 Robert.. tell the kiddos how Kodak's losing the patent-infringement lawsuit brought by Polaroid pretty much broke the back of the Eastman Kodak Company.

Kodak survived, but only as a shell of it's former self. Even though the developed some of the very first digital image sensor breakthroughs, they were then no longer fiscally strong enough to develop those early patents into commercially viable technologies. And hence sold them to others, who did.

I miss Dektol, D-76, and the Holy Trinity of Kodak, Agfa and Ilford printing papers. And my Omega B-22XL enlarger and full B&W darkroom.

Yet more "inflation, too much money chasing too few goods" data points. The used car/truck market is up 24% year over year, and jumped 3% in the last two weeks. New vehicle (especially pickups) inventories are low, and that is sparking demand for late model used vehicles.

Dealers have been bidding up the price at auctions to get their hands on these.

Stimulus money is driving much of the retail level demand.

Its like dude, you're a musician, you make music, artists paint. I never even technically viewed myself as a musician, because I never gave a shit about anything but metal, so I always said I'm a metal guitarist, not a musician, and definitely not an artist. 635 If you wanted a Purdey, and have to ask how much it would cost, you couldn't afford it, as the old saying goes.
Now, Prince Hapless had two of those made for him. And he let that bitch make him get rid of them.

FE was pretty much the same camera (shared shutter, prism, meter & interchangeable focusing screens), but the FE kicked in with Aperture Priority exposure "automation", when you selected "A" on the shutter speed dial. Came in handy when events speeded up a bit.

Advantage, FM. It would run meterless, even without battery. The FE would run in 1/125th and "B" shutter speed only, sans power. But my preference was always the FE, and my bag was never without a half dozen spare batteries.

Same. Close as I have now, is a Ruger Hawkeye "African", M77 in 6.5x55. Unique in this. Ruger has made the "African" 77s in many heavy chamberings. But the "Swede" chambering was a run of only 250, as ordered by the distributer "Lipseys". Mine is one such, with the Lipsey's letter to attest. AND, it also attests that this rifle was the actual 2016/2017 Shot Show Display Rifle for said company. Paid a skosh less than a grand for it, via Gunbroker.

Shotgun wise, I'd be proud to own a basic Beretta Silver Quail in either 12 or 20 ga, and call it a day.

The undertand the Baizuo very well and know just how to manipulate them, push their buttons. They figure race, sexism, LGBTism and all that shit will be our undoing. And they're gonna help it along, by stoking that shit.

733 The cat's question is not a multiple choice question you Morons. It asks for a specific answer.
Half of the time the answer will be either A or D is correct.
25% of the time the answer will be B.25% of the time the answer will be C.In other words, half the time the answer will be B or C, in which you have a 25% chance of randomly choosing on any one guess.

Splitting the difference, leaves a 37.5 % chance you will pick the correct answer. depending if the the answer is (A or D), B, or C.

737 >> Splitting the difference, leaves a 37.5 % chance you will pick the correct answer. depending if the the answer is (A or D), B, or C.

There is no answer. It is self-referential paradox.

Let's go through the infinite contradictory loop generated by that self-reference. We'll start out and say we've concluded the answer is 0. Well, that's one of the choices, so now, the correct answer is a 25% chance. Whoops, 25% occurs twice, so there's now a 50% chance of picking that randomly. So the correct answer is 50%. Which is one of the choices. If that is correct, then that knocks the answer back to 25%.

That process never converges. It's inconsistent.

Thus that question, that problem, *has no solution*. There is no answer. Which is the whole point of the joke.

One can trivially construct a consistent version of that self-reference by changing the choices to, say,

A) 25% B) 0% C) 50% D) 100%

That converges and is consistent. The answer is 25%. A random choice will have a 25% choice of picking the correct answer.

The self-reference here does not change the answer, and there is a solution. No paradox is generated.

768 Publius, you've assumed that the answer to the question must explicitly be the absolute value of one the values next to choice of letter. That assumption is incorrect. If I was to truly give a random answer to the question, I might choose "But first you will blow me" as an answer.
Hell, there are infinity random answers, and only one correct answer, so the chance I would randomly pick the right answer is one divided by infinity or zero%.However, since it unclear whether the true correct answer is definitely either A, B, C, or D,or could be an answer like "Vulvatic xertz" then the choice is either 0% for the correct answer being something like that,
or 37.5 % for being the answer being limited to either be A, B ,C, or D (not the value listed by the letter). It is either one or the other, so 50% one, 50% the other, splitting the difference, 18.75%. The real correct answer is you would have an 18.75% chance if being correct if you randomly chose one of the letter answers.

Your analysis is erroneous, and woefully so.

No, the directive pick a choice at random means pick one of the four possible choices at random. One of many possible methods of doing that is generate a random integer from 1 to 4. A = 1, B =2, etc.

There is 1/4 probability each of choosing A, B, C, or D. That is the very definition of pick one of four choices at random. Now, when you pick any one, you change the probabilities because of the self-referencing construction. It is internally inconsistent.

The correct answer to this is "there is no answer". If you doubt me, consult any reference on self-reference. You'll see this is one of many standard expositions of a self-referential paradox. A fellow named Kurt Godel did a lot of work based on this sort of thing.

Some still wear them while driving alone. It is social conditioning. I have a bandana that I pull up the second I go in a store and pull it down the second I leave. There are some situations where I will put it on to make others feel better, but that is less than 2 percent of my day.

Nothing special here, I bet most here do that same thing. When I go to red areas, even the store workers rarely where a mask. To go in with a mask would prove you are a tourist. But in blue areas, no doubt many are being socially conditioned. Even when this threat is over, those in the know will remember they can make the majority of people do anything they want.

I can choose a letter answer and with out even knowing the question I will randomly be correct 37.5% of the time, given the multiple choice subset given, provided that the question required an answer that was one the shiny answers, which I don't know, for sure, since I don't care what the question is.

Posted by: Based Billy Ocean at March 27, 2021 05:42 AM (W3hdj)

789 I would like to think there is a magic method such as Keto or Paleo. I am not saying they don't work, because of course they do. Almost any diet works as long as you are on it and watch what you eat. The fact that you are on a diet means you are focusing on what goes in and that should change things. Same with intermittent fasting. OF course it "works" in theory, because most of the time you are not eating anything.

But then I look at Asia, and realize they eat lots of carbs such as rice. Then I look at Europe, and recall bread has historically meant life itself in Russia. In ancient Rome the leaders offered bread and circuses to placate the mob.

I am not down on keto or any other super low carb diet. We all go our own way and what works for one man might not work for another. In the end, we all make our own choices. But I do wonder why people today have the most problems with obesity, and also, they seem to have all the answers. I wonder if as a society we are missing what the real issue is. It is likely a forest for the trees thing.

791 to be clear, I agree getting rid of many carbs will help most people. But I wonder why we have to go to those extremes. Could it be there are other issues that put us in a situation where we can't eat carbs? Of the top of my head, I would think spending too much time staring at a computer screen might be an issue.

And sure there are good carbs and bad carbs. If I could choose a diet for life I would go the the Mediterranean diet as exemplified by those that live in Crete. But we don't eat the same amount of greens they do, nor do most have access to them. And even more importantly, we don't have the more laid back lifestyle they do. Some of us do, but many do not. There are some things you can't replicate in a diet plan.

796 Quint, it works for us. We are very active and enjoy the benefits of a keto and paleo nutrition plan along with fasting. But we don't push it on our kids except the no refined sugar and very limited starches. My wife is the biology, chemistry, and math genius so I trust her due diligence in that area. It's paid off dividends. Plus, the woman never gained more than 22 lbs during any one of her 6 pregnancies.
When we compete rarely these days for CrossFit and rarely do a WOD, we will carb up. But injuries have caught up with both of us the last 8 years so we adjusted the nutrition to fit our lifestyles. She has a garage gym at her house next door for the girls and I have one here for the guys. We come up with our own workouts to maintain.
As always, what works for some people doesn't work for others.
Btw, I hate this used Iphone my friend gave me when mine died Wednesday. The touch screen is pissing me off. But, free is free and I am grateful for good friends.

But wait! 0% is a possible answer, 1 out of 4, 25%. Hold on, 25% is a possible answer, 2 times. So then, guessing 25% would make it 2 out of 4, 50% likely to guess the right answer. Oh my, 50% is also a possibility...
