Gun Thread: Sunday 7PM Edition! [Weasel]

sunday 1 scaled.jpg

Howdy y'all! It's Sunday and it's 7pm Eastern and we know what that means, don't we? Don't we?? Sure we do! It's Gun Thread time! For the next three hours we'll laugh, we'll cry, and generally have a good 'ol time as we talk about guns, gun stuff and shooting. So settle in to the Lay-Z Boy, pop open a sarsaparilla, and let's see what we have below, shall we?

I made it to the farm-o for a quick little trip this week. It was a quick trip to check on things so I wasn't able to shoot any video, but I did manage to do a wee tad of shooting with my trusty .22 caliber Colt Colteer single-shot bolt rifle.

22LR setup at WA scaled.jpg

It's a great little rifle and a lot of fun to shoot. What is even better is plinking away to your heart's content and not feeling guilty about going thru too much ammunition. This rifle has a vintage Weaver K4 scope, and with steel at 100 yards allows me to practice many of the elements of general marksmanship; set-up on the gun, eye relief behind the scope, trigger discipline, breathing techniques, and others.

colt colteer 022821 scaled.jpg

I think I paid a little over $200 for this rifle, and from what I have heard, .22LR ammunition can still be found. If the ammo shortage has shut down your range time, consider a small caliber alternative, either rifle or handgun. They really are a lot of fun!

First up or pal Blake shares some thoughts on concealed carry.

blake 1 022821 scaled.jpg

The original version of this was written, by me, and posted to a thread at Free Republic, in response to a bunch of people arguing about CCW, who were trying to convince people they were carrying the wrong weapon, and their weapon of choice was obviously superior. I thought it foolishness that was detracting from what I thought were pretty basic principals of CCW.

A while later, the subject came up at The Truth About Guns and, once again, I thought the discussion was going the wrong direction. I pulled the post from FR, and edited it to what you see below.

I carry and don't give a crap about the specs of what I or anyone else is carrying*. The only questions that matter are:

Is your carry gun reliable?
I shoot my carry gun, using my carry holster, in competition (IDPA). I don't shoot for score, I shoot to maintain proficiency. I don't clean my carry gun before a competition, because it needs to work, even after a month or two of carrying concealed.

Are you proficient with your carry gun?
It's all well and good to talk about the weight of your firearm and the ballistics of the round being shot, but in the end, the ability to put rounds on target is what matters. If you can put six in the 10-ring with a .22 and miss six out of six shooting a 9mm, which is the better carry option?

Do you carry all the time?
One can't choose when one will run into trouble. Either you take the responsibility seriously and carry at all times, except as proscribed by law, or you don't. There is no "swagger" factor for conceal carry. Carrying is deadly serious business and the assumed responsibility and consequences should be given serious thought.

*If anyone is interested, I carry a full-size Kimber 1911, with a single white dot front site, loaded with 230 grain +P hollow points. I shoot the 230 grain +P in competition once in a while, just so I know how they shoot and to make sure they feed reliably.

I think Blake makes some very good points. How about the rest of you?

Next up we have an interesting product from our pal Deplorable SOB Van Owen

Last night's Gun Thread touched a bit on the subject of cleaning, so I thought I'd pass on some thoughts about a product I used yesterday for the first time. It's called BarrelBuddy, and is basically a replacement for the venerable old cloth cleaning patch. It is a foam composite cylinder with a coarse forward portion and a smooth absorbent rear portion. You soak the forward portion with cleaner (I used Hoppe's #9) and push through the barrel with a jag.

tdsobvo 2 022821 scaled.jpg

tdsobvo 3 022821 scaled.jpg

Supposedly the cylinder shape conforms better to the bore and rifling, resulting in more efficient cleaning. It worked pretty well on my (moderately dirty) pistol and I definitely used fewer cylinders than I would have patches. It is also much less messy. Honestly, I also think it works better than a Bore Snake, but YMMV.

However, considering the price, a bag of 50 for $11.98, I think buying bulk patches is much more economical if you do a lot of cleaning. The ad copy says a bag of 50 will last you for 10 to 13 cleanings. Obviously if your firearm is really dirty, you'll use more of the things in one session. Since I normally clean after every shooting trip, that's not a whole bunch of cleanings. Even so, I plan to keep some of these on hand in different caliber sizes and stick them in the range bag for a quick cleaning session.

TDSOBVO 1 022821 scaled.jpg

Anyhow, I thought some of the Gun Morons might be interested in it, since it's kind of innovative, and if we can't find ammo, we have to have SOMETHING to spend our money on.

Interesting looking product! Anyone else using these?

******

Next up our pal and delightful and talented 'ette Jewells shares a report on a recent trip to the range. I have to say I am very happy to see so many 'ette's becoming gun owners and practicing their marksmanship skills.

Jewells 1 022821 scaled.jpg

The first picture I was aiming for the heart.. obviously off a little but got my mojo going and did pretty fair I think.

Jewells 2 022821 scaled.jpg

My last eight bullets I tried for the head shot. I was aiming for his left eye in the first shot and bingo! Second shot I tried for the other eye.. eh.. I ended up way too high and too far left. The rest I just wanted to hit the middle of the face. I'm not sure where the 8th shot went lmao! Anyhoo.. I thought it was a decent day. This is at 15 feet and I'm much improved from just 2 months ago. I think I can go for 20 feet now. I don't go as much as I should but I try for at least once a week.

I'm thinking anybody with this many holes in their chest and face are going to decide to find another victim. Or perhaps find another occupation altogether. Very nicely done, Jewells! Keep up the great work!

******

Next up we have a note from our pal "John", which I suspect is not his real name, regarding ammo sales in his area.

This may not be news to you but was to me. I was finding it near impossible to buy 5.7x28mm online at a decent price. None of my local gun stores had any in stock or at a price I was willing to pay.

Or so they said.

I then went to the GunBroker auction site and found lots of 5.7 to bid on. Digging into one of the auctions a little bit further, I found that the lot was being offered by one of my local gun stores. Looks like they can make more money selling by auction than in the store. So that's what they are doing in lieu of retail in-store sales, except if you buy a gun, but that's a different matter.

I was able to win the bid at what I consider to be a "reasonable" price for these times. And I was able to go to the store to pick up the ammo to save on the shipping charges.

Don't know if anyone else is seeing this, but I think it's probably more common than most people realize.

Well, as I mentioned to "John" that's not really surprising now that I think about it. Unfortunate, but not surprising. I will say I would be pretty irritated if it happened with a shop I had patronized regularly over a period of time. Great catch and thank you for sending this in! Anyone else seeing anything like it?

******

Lastly our pal A.H. Lloyd sends in a tip on a new YouTube channel he has found.

A couple of days ago I discovered a fairly new YouTube channel for Historical Investments. It's got about a dozen videos on it and they seem to be adding more regularly.

The outfit is a vendor on Gun Broker but it's a great resource for collectors. They have a piece on Chinese Broomhandles and actually go into what the authentic characters mean. Really good stuff and fun to watch. Unlike Forgotten Weapons this guy gets into market value considerations.

To put it another way, it's like Antiques Road Show for guns. The guy sits there with the pointer and talks about traits and what adds value. Check it out!

Looks very interesting, thanks A.H. Lloyd!!

Homework

Last week we had a look at a YouTube video from a guy posting on YouTube as GunBlue490, who has made a bunch of lengthy videos on a variety of gun and shooting topics. The video from last week was on oil and lubrication, and is posted again here for reference.

Anyone have a chance to watch it? Anyone make it through the whole thing? What did you think? Agree, disagree, or did you just give up?

This week we have another from the same guy on the 1911 and which is much shorter at 24 minutes.

Anyone who is new to the world of 1911's, and frankly those who have had one for years, should find this interesting. We'll take a look at another next week.

14 Greeting Weasel, and gun enthusiasts.
I couldn't figure out what that target was at first, but then I caught on. My local range (RIP) did not allow human shaped targets, which may be a contributing factor as to why it is closed.
When I take down my 1911, I have a shroud around the work area sort of like a pup tent. This limits the physical area that the main spring can go flying away to. I know, it's a kluge, but it works. Started doing that after one got away and I wasted an hour looking for it...

36 I may have to look into the Barrel Buddy. Call me crazy, but after an outing at the range, I clean my guns. Maybe this is because this is what is done in the AF, I don't know. But I like to keep them cleaned at ready to go at all times. (In the case of the Beretta that I had before the canoe trip, it loved having the slide well lubricated. Not doing so was like a red-carpet invitation to jams.)

Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at February 28, 2021 07:14 PM (49Dnm)

37 Actual range report - home-built 45 runs great! 400 CorBon needs to be figured out... think I just didn't have enough recoil spring for it - only went up to 18.5lb while in the lane. But damn, that 20lb spring is a bitch... as usual, the 327 snubby proved deadly accurate but my 45 Colt Beretta Single -Action proved finicky again.

38 Its been black powder week here at Rancho Dude. I'm going primitive as a backup. I Bought another Uberti 1851 Colt Navy knockoff , a modern black powder rifle (.50 cal, synthetic stock, scope mounted- would make Davy Crocket salivate. It uses shotshell primers as the priming source.

Also picked up an original 1862 Tower Enfield percussion musket in good condition for my Civil War example in the collection.. It was a favorite of both the north and South. This one has the US medallion on the stock so it most likely was used by the Army of Northern Aggressors.

Ruger All-Weather, bolt-action hunting rifle. Just laying in stuff, possibly loaners, and it does not have to be bleeding edge accurate. But I know there are loads out there people load, which "shoot great in all .308s" they try it with. Kind of looking for ballpark.

59 Some thoughts on Blake's comments above on a carry weapon. Especially about the reliability part. I have a Ruger SR22 that I just love. I'm accurate with it and it's fun to shoot. But I don't trust it. I had problems with it going bang on the first round of the magazine. Now, I didn't clean it before I took it to the range the first time, and when I finally did clean it (after about 500 rounds), the feed ramp was absolutely filthy. I don't know if that was a contributing factor but it would fail 5 out of 8 or 9 times. I haven't had the chance to take it to the range since it was cleaned, so my opinion might change. RO at the range said he had one and never had a problem.

also, spot-on, Blake, very good points which I agree with 100%.

nickel-on-barrel dry fire only this week, and draw-from-shoulder-holster practice ... got the rig adjusted pretty well to be where my hand naturally goes ... snap the thumb-break and pull, everything just falls into place for a quick first shot.

76 Blake got down to the essentials for CC. Reliability, accuracy, and availability. These are the factors I use when deciding on a carry piece.

Accuracy, for my purposes, is keeping within 3 inches or so between 10 and 25 yards. Another aspect of accuracy is power. If the cartridge is too powerful, it will cause flinching and probably slow down any repeat shots. Is a 357 in a snubby too much? Go down to 32 mag or 32 long or even a regular 22lr. Hitting the target is the most important, potency comes later.

might fuss with the accuracy a tad, but i only need minuted of front yard accuracy. what say you Weasel, is this true? anyone else?

94 4, nice setup. If new rifle, use the fmj bullets first to break in barrel. Depending on barrel roughness, 50 to 100 rounds should do it and no use using target hp bt bullets for breaking in. Using a bolt action, starting varget loads online at hogdons powder website should be good enough for starters and then breakin of barrel.

Check during breakin firing for cu fouling periodically and remove by cleaning at range then firing another string. Repeat until barrel does not foul much. Then start load development

103 Range report: Flat on face edition! Woot!

Yeah, major face plant in the Garand match yesterday, a match I was really looking forward to.

If there was a mistake to be made, I made it, along with inventing a couple of new ones.

I couldn't get my spotting scope set up properly, mainly because I wasn't paying attention and ran out of time..well, mostly because, so, I decided, what the heck, let's roll, I knew the rifle was sighted in, and thought I knew the ammo (anyone see a problem here?) and decided to roll with it. (this is a 200 yard match)

Yeah, bad idea. With a properly set up spotting scope, I could have caught what was going on, but, no.......I got great groups at 200 yards, dead center, low, out of the scoring area. Yeah, after shooting, I realized it was ammo I'd shot before, all right, but, I also remembered it tended to shoot dead center in my rifle, but, low.

Still a fun match, I learned a lot, mostly because, every single mistake I made is easily correctable. Sigh.

112 Hey everyone!

Yes, I've been to the range. My super-cheap Yugo M70 (in the delightfully fun 7.65mm Browning) is arguably the best value I've ever achieved with a purchase. It's compact, crisp and as I put more rounds through it, it's loosening up nicely.

As noted above, don't worry about caliber, shot placement is what really counts. I'm using the M70 for practice but the more I shoot .32 ACP (see what I did there?) the more I'm coming to appreciate it.

126 Some thoughts on Blake's comments above on a carry weapon. Especially
about the reliability part. I have a Ruger SR22 that I just love. I'm

---
Rimfire rounds are simply less reliable than centerfire ones. I've seen it happen many times. That is my only beef with people using .22LR as a self-defense round. If you switch up to .25 ACP or .32 ACP, the caliber snobs will say you're wasting your time because you're still using a 'mouse gun,' but they're still wrong.

The more I shoot .32 the more I enjoy it. It is a fun, accurate caliber and there's a reason the Europeans still groove to it after all these years.

128 Spot on Blake. My EDC is a Walther P22 with an extended mag (15rnds). I shoot CCI Stingers HP (1640fps). After breaking it in and correcting some of the known issues I can not remember the last misfire I had. I have a boatload of. 22. I also have my own range. I shoot on average 3 times a week. I rarely put one outside of the kill zone. My routine includes shooting from the ground, flat on my back and my favorite, running about 100 yds from the top of my driveway to the target area. Is it an effective EDC? One night last week, I was walking down the hill to my old tool shed in search of some 3 inch wood screws. I was actually reading comments on the ONT and not paying attention. My bad. I looked up and found a large cougar staring at me from about 20 feet. I was able to get off 4 shots before he got out of flashlight range. The next morning I followed the blood trail. He made it about 250 yards before he died. I hit him 3 times in the chest and once in the ass end. This was a full size 150 lb plus cat. I trust my weapon. I occasionally leave my cell phone or wallet at home when I leave . Never go anywhere outside my door with out my pistol. My wife carries the Glock 19.

131 Weasel's enjoyment using that little 22 single shot rifle reminded me of something. I've noticed I'm enjoying slower shooting, often using single shot guns or loading one cartridge, more and more. Is it part of the aging process? Maybe. Is it influenced by using traditional muzzleloaders? Probably. Does it help that I'm too cheap to just blow off lots of ammo? Oh yeah!!

But that approach lets me concentrate on each shot to get the best out of the gun, the ammo and myself. And that makes for a pleasant range session.

One positive, well, the only positive, I did a much better job shooting off-hand. I was able to let the trigger break when it wanted to, rather than forcing the issue, avoiding doing anything untoward when pressing the trigger. Still didn't help with scoring, as I was low, but, from a stance and trigger discipline standpoint, much better.

Posted by: Sock Monkey * doubling the cube at February 28, 2021 07:58 PM (QbQnZ)

164 OK, there was ammo everywhere... sort of. 223,5.56, 9mm, 40 S&W, 380 was there in quantity. More or less at 1 dollar per round. 22LR in 500 round bricks was at least .30 per round. Rick bought some 35 Remington at slightly more than 2 bucks a round.
I bough some 16 gauge, 60 rounds for 40 bucks. I bought one box of 38 special " mid range" wadcutters, for 25 bucks. ( I have a model 52 S&W that only shoots that...
All in all, a great trip. Sold one shotgun of the 2 I brought, bought needed ammo
Last one in a second...

165 RE: gunbroker - I've used them quite a bit over the last few months, what with local stores running dry, and I've had very positive experiences. The key is KNOWING WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

You get what you pay for, and you absolutely need to look at those pictures and every freaking word of the item description because THAT IS WHAT YOU GET. If you are a total noob, not sure what you are seeing, the item has only a couple of pictures, etc., it is easy to get burned. Unless you are buying NIB, always always always ask about condition, particularly the bore, which most sellers do not get into. Conversely, if you pop a message to them asking "what's the bore look like?" you can get some interesting replies. I ended up getting an epic deal on a since-submerged firearm because I was the only person to express interest in it. Caveat Emptor and all that.

Also, its good to have a tame FFL on payroll. That helps a lot.

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd at February 28, 2021 07:59 PM (llXky)

166 Good points on the Conceal carry Blake. My personal advice is that you must carry a gun that you are not afraid to shoot. If it is a .45 great, if it is a .22 great.

No one is going to look at your gun and think "That is just a .22, it will not hurt to bad." No they are going to think "F*%k that is a gun."

That said if and when you draw your gun be prepared to use it.

Posted by: Dr. Professor Neal Degreasse Tyson Esquire the Third at February 28, 2021 07:59 PM (dGQu9)

168 you have to have a .22. My first gun was a very old .22 single shot bolt action. I still love that weapon. We bought it for a song from an antique dealer who thought it was a good choice for home defense. It was a 1930 Canadian made rifle and after re-bluing it, puddying the stock, and staining the stock, it worked out well. I still love that thing. Everyone is amazed that the rifle is legitimately lighter than most bb guns.

I went on to the Ruger 10/22, a much more practical weapon. But that Canadian single shot will always be my first and my favorite .22

170 108 Jewells' target reminds me of my first date with Mrs. JTB. We went to an indoor range and used a Ruger Single-Six. This was the first time she ever fired a gun. I learned the hard way about e-bay bidding. I just missed out on a Spitfire because I was typing in my bids. Later I found out that you need to put in your max bid when you start. It keeps going whenever someone outbids you. That's why it seems like a bot. Two bidders starting at different times at different bid levels with different max bids automatically keeps raising the bid after each one does it, so it's constantly upping the bids.

Both of us cautiously retreated. This cat was in a crouch. Watch a few screwyoutube videos if you don't know how lightning quick those animals are. I have no problems with predators. 244 Actually, as a Frequent Flyer there, Gunbroker does NOT collect the payment. That goes directly to the seller. How G.B. collects though, is the seller's "plastic" is on file with G.B., and the Seller's Agreement with 'em, is that the "commission" on the item is then billed to the seller's plastic, automatically. G.B. DOES notify the seller "who won" the bid, and facilitates the exchange of information between parties. G.B.s "Buyer's Agreement" spells out how quickly payment must be received by the seller, and etc.

I've mailed countless U.S. Postal Money Orders to Gunbroker sellers, and have also ran my own plastic through their brick & mortar retail accounts. I've never sent a dime TO Gunbroker, except for when I've been billed the commission on a sale, which I've done precisely ONCE in my life.

you are probably right. Same as the jagoffs that wait outside liquor stores to by rare whiskeys and then they try to sell them for more. yeah, yeah, free market and all that. So when people at Cotsco hide the rare ones so they can get them themselves, is that the free market too? Grown men should have a better way to spend their days than to act like kids outside a rock concert. If arbitrage is really your game, there are more sophisticated ways that to act like a kid and parasite at the same time. The reason often ammo sellers and booze sellers have to limit certain sales to one item. The people are jagoffs and must be limited because they don't give a damn about anyone else, and they likely never will.

248 Hi, Ben Had!

I am definitely suffering from some cabin fever this winter. I did make it out to the farm on Saturday to do some work. That was a nice break from all of the recent office work.

There were armadillos everywhere digging up the ground. I assume they have been starving for bugs and grubs since the ground froze so hard here.

They are pissing me off though! They dug up some newly planted trees last fall, and I have stepped into a hole while carrying a load and hurt my knee.

I assume they qualify as varmints in Texas. I can only imagine a running horse stepping into on of their burrows!

I hope you are doing well and your ranch is ready for spring to arrive!

And the _ONLY_ time I would disagree is if they're making their choice based on really flawed premises. (Something like "but all the assassins in movies kill their guy with a single shot from a .22 pistol at 50 yards." ) And even then I would correct the premise, not the choice of firearm.

Posted by: whig at February 28, 2021 08:33 PM (3bhRV)

275 Talk of ammo prices is another reason to reload. It's an opportunity to get free or inexpensive components. In over 30 years of reloading I've found thousands of once fired cases left behind at the range. Often handgun calibers but also rifle, even the best stuff by Lapua. Yes, they need to be cleaned and sized but they are free.

At shows and swap meets I keep an eye open for cast bullets. I double check their weight and diameter but have my share of them for as low as ten bucks for 500. Ditto for odd lots of primers. I am more cautious with old powders. With pistol ammo going for 2 bucks a round, it is worth my time to roll my own. No hoarding needed, just perseverence. Something to keep in mind for the future.

298 I'm impressed with the 1911 for a carry gun. I think if I lived in a state I could open carry, sure. But for a conceal? That's a hunk.

I just purchased a beautiful SA TRP Operator that's 4 years old, but it was never fired. I decided before taking it to the range I'd take it apart, and it turned out that was the smart thing to do. The factory grease had turned into a sticky glue. It probably would have given me fits and farts had I tried firing it.

The only "problem" I had was doing that full length guide rod. I had to make a little "tool" so I could contain the spring, and it took a while to find something suitable, finally remembered where there was a wire coat hanger. I'll figure out if I want to move to a regular GI or the fancy (and rather cool) Dawson replacement.

Can hardly wait to take it to the range! I had a great time last week, I'm so glad I joined! And these guys have lots of ammo for decent prices at their bulk rate, so I don't have to use up my stash if I don't want to. Too bad it was pouring rain, but nothing was going to stop me at that point!

Posted by: 4 at February 28, 2021 08:44 PM (KnJdm)

300 "personal preference", exactly.

I, myself, have a kind of twitch about being unarmed, at least minimally, ever ... predawn when I usually get up, this is the NAA mini .22 in the neck holster, with a small folding knife and a single-AAA flashlight, as I head down to the kitchen for the morning's coffee&grits.

it just gets heavier & more elaborate from there ... but it's all about prepared to resist, well, whatever ...

there's a story, of course, ...

GB's clock resets to 15 minutes on each bid, if the end time is less that 15 minutes. I have put in bids at 15:05 on the theory that no one is watching and they might not get their Your are outbid email in time.

I've had mixed results. Now I pretty much just bid what the item is worth to me and if that's not enough, oh well.

OTOH, I have owned one of the lightest .32s or serious mouse guns anyone could ask for as well. That was and is the Kel Tec p32. I know people love them some Ktec 3ATs. But i still love the OG. A lot of people on boards will quote this and that, but I know what I have tested over decades. One range day this week. I practiced shooting from a standing position (finally starting to hit consistently on target - breathing correctly is huge) and then a little tune-up work with my ccw making sure I don't lose the feel for that trigger.
Gun range had some .45 ACP ammo, so I bought a box to augment my supplies. My Shield really does not like that particular brand - I've put thousands of rounds through it and have had three stoppages total - all with this ammo.
On the plus side, I got to do a tap-rack-bang drill left-handed.

I really need to remember to send Weasel some photos. After my mom passed I was looking through some photo albums, and found the shots of my Dad with my 7th B-day present, a Ruger 10/22. We were shooting it in the backyard. No big deal, except the backyard is Los Altos CA in 1964. Try that today!

As I'd mentioned here before my horror story, my mother also gave away my 10/22, and that broke my heart. So, when I started my recent gun buying binge, I grabbed the first 10/22 carbine (wood stock) I could lay my hands on. It felt good! I'm the wrong person to ask. Not quite as nicely made as 50+ years ago, but close. So, I'm the wrong person to ask but for me, it's the benchmark for a plinker rifle. Easy to take apart (even for a kid), as many available parts as an F150, and dead accurate.

348 I know, we're about done seems like, but for posterity...I did get to the range this week.

Money being bullets or vice versa, only shot a little. The star was my (VERY) used CZ 75 BD (decocker only) and my (VERY) new Kadet adapter.

The pistol is shooting consistently to the right, with everyone who's tried it. I don't have a sight drift tool and I'm leery about fiddling with it with a punch and mallet, so I may just live with it. It's not radically off. Groups are good, trigger is outstanding, as is often the case with well-used CZ pistols.

The Kadet adapter is so new it still had packing oil and plastic bags on everything. It did not slide easily onto the frame, I had to frankly...ram it on, it was so tight. Once it was on, worked fine. I may do a compare and review of the two Kadet adapters. First 50 rounds though it, working good.

So not a lot of range count but got some good double tap practice in as well as 'present and fire' drills with single shots.

Agree. Carrying a full-size 1911 is bonkers. It's way too long and heavy.

The 4.25" Combat Commander (steel frame) is a better choice.

you go too far sir. for SHTF, it is a great weapon. I prefer mouse guns and snubbies for EDC but that was after years of trying this and that. Everyone is different. My personal test is if when you get home, the first thing you think of is getting that big iron off, then yeah, it is likely too much. But again, everyone goes their own way. Some might laugh at what I carry, but at least I am always strapped.

401 376 ... Another vote for the Ruger 10/22 take down. Cleaning and inconspicuous carry are easier. Also, mine is more accurate than any other semi I've used and the magazines are reliable. I've used the 25 round third party magazine on it but unless shooting off hand, the long magazine gets in the way.

I get similar accuracy from a Marlin 39a and Henry 001 but the Ruger lets me reacquire the target without changing the grip to work a lever action.

Oh, neat, I hadn't heard of those. That's kind of an adorable little dual-band. Looks like you could fit it into a lot of places that a single-DIN wouldn't fit, and the display looks like it's easy to read at a glance.

435 Ammo prices are down slightly, and more ammo is now available. Calibers that were simply unavailable are now pricey, but you can get them.

This is a good thing.
Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd

Thankfully!

I, genius that I am, decided to add TWO new calibers to my arsenal during this mess, for which I of course had no ammo.

6.5 Creedmoor is bottoming around $3.25/round. I'm looking back fondly at the days I paid $2.25/round for my initial purchase. *sigh*

But like you said, at least it's on the shelves again, and that's a good thing.

I don't know how many we have who have HF gear and a proper antenna. We could try, but someone who's been working contacts more recently than I should probably be the one to organize it.

What would be really cool is if we could find a way to loop in people who just recently got licensed and are using UHF/VHF stuff, or who are just listening. I could probably commit to getting WebSDR running at my station, if someone else runs the net.

480 As usual, good stuff. But let's get down to a truth: the 1911 full-size is a great military gun but really really really sucks as either an occasional CCW or EDC. Sucks. I like 'em but not EDC or SHTF EDC. Not even in a bug out bag

I have carried a full size Kimber since, well, I got my CCW. But, I'm tall and thin, so, not really an imposition. I may have to find something lighter down the road, but, for now, I'm good. Heck, I drove from CA to VA carrying it.

If and when I downsize, I'll probably stay with the 1911 platform, but switch to a smaller version in 9mm.

Late, but quick range report.
Went yesterday and shot with Mark AE. Had not been to the range in a few months, cuz Inslee.
Shot the standard .40 XD and was comfortable and pretty accurate, at least for me. Grip was solid, so that problem from before is now in the rear view mirror, still having some problems with the trigger pull, but if it is off, at least it is consistently down and low. Tried a minimum adjustment, and YES! 7 out of 12 rounds in the center ring at 20 feet. Others were consistently a bit low. It was a good feeling to see that.
Also, shot single handed and did better than I thought I would do.
Baby steps.

They carry a steel core plastic bullet, and are supposed to achieve enough energy to exceed the velocity of standard 9 mm ammo despite having not enough powder to cycle the action. Will be interesting to try it.

509 I just looked at this. 6.5 Creedmoor seems to be totally unavailable from my normal sources. Even Ammoseek is unhelpful. OTOH, I stocked up on 9mm plinking ammo before the crunch. The last cases I bought were only $159/1000. Eat your heart out!
