46 Mornin', all,

Somehow this reminds me of the St. Peter who appears in Heinlein's Job: A Comedy of Justice. When the hero, Alexander, meets him in Heaven, he proves to be a big warm burly guy with big hands. Someone tells Alexander in the novel that Peter denied his Master three times and has been making up for it ever since, or words to that effect. We're also told that Peter likes Coca-Cola!

I can see this Peter in that scene.

There's a tradition or legend that Peter was crucified (head down, I think) in Rome during Nero's reign, which was 54-68 AD. If Jesus died in about 30, Peter had a good 25 or 30 years left to live. Plenty of time to go gray in the hard life of the early Empire.

Peter, when still a Disciple, is mostly pictured in art as an older man. It indicates his status as leader of the Apostles and gives him an "Elder Statesman" look. John, during his disciple-hood, is depicted very young because he lived into the AD 90s. Many times he looks like a young girl. This is why many conspiracy theorists think that's Mary in Leonardo's Last Supper. It's not. It's John.

The tell is folks saying are paths are equally good, but that some people are just inherently bad. This not only rejects the need for repentance, but the possibility of redemption. The rest follows naturally.

When I think of Peter's betrayal, I always think of Judas' too. I can't help contrast the two. Both men were close to Jesus. Both betrayed him. Both were remorseful. I believe Judas would have been forgiven if he asked for it, and then his story of redemption might have been greater than Paul's. His story is so sad.

A teacher at the Catholic grade school I went to told us heaven isn't in a specific physical location, it's more like an alternate dimension. I don't think there's anything Biblical backing that up, but it seems like a reasonable approximation.

Unless there's some early version of a story where their bones were given over to the faithful, and why would Rome do that, it seems to me this would be like going to a prison grave, where they just dumped all the bodies together, and saying "Oh, I think that set over there is my Uncle Louie."

98 I like the expression on Peter's face.

Peter rebukes Jesus for saying he had to suffer and die. I think he's like a lot of us. If somebody else's vision and reality and view conflict with our own we want to enlighten them and show them the errors of their ways. But for Christians, it seems, we have all disagreed with Jesus when he hasn't seen the world the way we want him to-particularly when it effects those we love. Jesus didn't conform with Peter's view. He wanted Jesus the miracle worker who was going to put Israel back top not the one who said "Take up your cross and follow me." And a cross isn't aging, unemployment and family problems as difficult as heart wrenching as those are. Its about death in response to professing Christ, which is happening all over the world. I may not live to see it, but it will come here too.

And what I also love about Peter is that he was forgiven for betraying Christ and went on to do great service for his Master and gave up his life for this foundational truth. So God can forgive our sins and betrayals too.

Right you are, I'm gonna attribute that to Monday morning, I wasn't thinking about that, but all the more reason to question the bones. Unless there's some early version of a story where their bones were given over to the faithful, and why would Rome do that, it seems to me this would be like going to a prison grave, where they just dumped all the bodies together, and saying "Oh, I think that set over there is my Uncle Louie."

Posted by: BurtTC at March 01, 2021 10:02 AM (oQ94s)

101 When I think of Peter's betrayal, I always think of Judas' too. I can't help contrast the two. Both men were close to Jesus. Both betrayed him. Both were remorseful. I believe Judas would have been forgiven if he asked for it, and then his story of redemption might have been greater than Paul's. His story is so sad.

Posted by: Kris

The true tragedy of Judas is his disbelief in redemption, and it shows throughout the Gospels when you look for it. He didn't believe in it for others and didn't for himself. Ultimately this placed him at odds with Christ's mission and made the end of the story inevitable. The irony is that it was also necessary to the mission, to the point that some very interesting debates about predestination vs free will can take place in his case.

This is why the Bible is full of weird imagery and symbols. Why Jesus had to resort to Parables all the time. And why people have been arguing over the meaning of Revelations for centuries. How DO you describe something completely out of the realm of human understanding? Ideas and things so far above us, that allegory is the only tool available, and even that's inadequate.

I never thought of Judas in that way, but I think you're right. I also agree with Kris, in that Jesus was ready to forgive Judas, if only he asked. Jesus, of course, knew that Judas would betray him all along, and he kept him as one of his disciples. Judas also stole from Jesus (as the treasurer) and Jesus knew that as well, but kept him anyway.

All Judas had to do was believe in the possibility of redemption, but he couldn't do that.

I cribbed lines from Ezekial 35. My bandmates were impressed with the finished product, "Fallen by the Sword." And I liked it since I can't sing, but got to death-growl my way through it.

"I think you just invented Christian Death Metal" our drummer said. "Too bad we're not a Christian Death Metal Group."

In Christian art, three does hold symbolism of the Trinity. Artists would many time compose the figures in their works to form triangles, for example. There's also the story of the three angels that visited Abraham, that many Christian scholars interpreted as the first indication in the Bible of the Trinity. There's a famous late Byzantine icon of these angels that was viewed as such.

FWIW, Evelyn Waugh has this to say in the preface to his novel "Helena":

"It used to be believed by the vulgar that there were enough pieces of the "true cross" to build a battleship. In the last [19th] century, a French savant, Charles Rohault de Fleury, went to the great trouble of measuring them all. He found a total of 4,000,000 cubic millimeters, whereas the cross on which our Lord suffered would probably comprise some 178,000,000. As far as volume goes, therefore, there is no strain on the credulity of the faithful."

Doesn't mean other arguments are invalid, just goes to that one point.

The amount of time and work required to get something like that up and running in all states is Daunting at best. The Morning Report.

"As horrendous as the GOPe is, it has the infrastructure and wherewithal to run candidates not just for president but at every federal, state and local political office.

A new party starting from scratch, even with Trump at the top, would just not be able to field such a panoply of candidates, certainly not without splitting the vote as bad or worse than the Libertarians. So, as crappy a prospect as having to wrest control of the GOP, it's much more of an attainable goal."

I read this as "let's primary GOP people" versus "let's start a new party". I think they're different objectives and not petty differences.

194 The Trump PAC is the strategy to crowdsource MAGA funding to primary challengers in an effort to takeover the GOP.

I believed a third party was the way forward as well, but without the express backing of Trump (who alone could get enough people to switch to make the process worthwhile), such efforts will not succeed.

Trump is trying to take over the GOP and play kingmaker. It will be a tough road. But that's where the fight's at.

Important not to vote for any non-Trump backed GOP candidate, in order to preserve MAGA's leverage. Also, whether Trump puts resources to defeating Murkowski in a primary will be a litmus test for me as to how serious Trump is with this effort.

214 Here's a scenario that I haven't seen any media comment on yet. If Biden is no longer capable of handling the job and resigns or is forced out, there is a vacancy in the office of the president, and the 25th amendment provides for the vice president to assume the presidency. That creates a vacancy in the office of vice president, and the 25th amendment says "Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress". But the Senate is divided 50/50 for now and with the office of vice president vacant there is no one available to vote in the case of a tie. So if the Republicans stand together there is no new vice president appointed without their agreement. And if there is no new vice president, there is no longer a Democratic majority in the Senate. Interesting, right?

220 I detest virtue signalling whether it is from the left or right.

Regarding a third party versus fumigating the GOPe Inc, there are things to be said for either. First the downside, a third party will basically require about 6-10 years to reach some semblance of an opposition and that depends on the speed of the decline of the GOP. The reason for such a difficulty of a third party is that the US uses single member districts for legislative races with a plurality and a plurality to win statewide offices in most instances. Then there is the actual embedding of the GOP as one of two major parties in state electoral codes which ta da require the legislature to change.
Reforming the GOP requires no legislative action much but the very difficult task of ensuring ideological loyalty from candidates and getting rid of much of the apparatus of state parties that act as conduits for GOP approved campaign consultants, managers, pollster, ad placers, etc. Then making the incumbents toe the line when every incentive is to defect to leftism.

241 Reforming the GOP requires no legislative action much but the very difficult task of ensuring ideological loyalty from candidates and getting rid of much of the apparatus of state parties that act as conduits for GOP approved campaign consultants, managers, pollster, ad placers, etc. Then making the incumbents toe the line when every incentive is to defect to leftism.
Posted by: whig at March 01, 2021 10:50 AM (pO7gM)

Saul Alinksy writes about this making the 'incumbents to the line' in the beginning of Rules for Radicals. It's not enough to vote and be done with it. Pressure must be maintained.

We've usually been content to allow the ACU, FreedomWorks, etc. just give their reviews of candidates and leave it at that. We didn't think that the GOPe would co-opt the leadership there and then lead us by the noses to permanent GOPe rule.

This is a bottom-up revolution. We must take over the state and local machinery first. This will take time, but needs to be done.

243 To continue, Both paths are difficult and the rank and file will have to determine whether or not to follow a leader in a difficult task.

A leaderless and donor less attempt to create a third party is doomed to failure--period. A substantial number of third parties have been attempted in US history, even with some funding and support, and never reached parity with their major party target.

A leader attempting to revamp a major party is more rare but not unprecedented--Reagan or Teddy Roosevelt are two such on the GOP side and Wilson, Obama, and FDR for the Dems. The critical whip is the voting public that is willing to vote for candidates that the charismatic party leader asks them to vote for and against the party 'traitors'. That has the advantage of causing incumbents that want to hold on to their seat to chose voters over their own inclinations and donors. Works better in the House than Senate for obvious reasons because 6 years is a long time in politics. There is a track record of presidents or former presidents leading conversions of parties that has a bit more success than leading a third party (Teddy did both btw).

280 The last is the rather stupid idea of simply not voting. Register or do not register Republican, that is one thing. But not voting is simply a pointless pouting exercise.

I grew up in a corrupt state with corrupt elections yet surprisingly elections still mattered and lousy candidates still lost. The idea of an inevitable hacked election is based on the places where the national government runs the polls itself and the elections are by slates of candidates and referendums.

In the most part, the key to killing a lot of cheating is in the hands of state legislatures and your county officials and there is nothing Dominion or the national Dems can do about it. Purging voter lists, suing in court to force it if necessary, banning third party paid poll workers, vote harvesting, etc. Getting rid of absentee balloting, and so on. Even if the Dems demand fraud laden voting means for national elections--THEY DO NOT HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE ELECTIONS means FOR STATE or LOCAL RACES nor can they administer them. States can even do as some states do with off year elections for state and local races through constitutional changes that separate federal and state races by year.

Wanna know what's really insane? It's what led to this. Biden did what Trump would not, and issued an EO mandating face masks on airplanes and various other interstate travel methods. That EO - which is bad even by EO standards - has no age exemptions or restrictions. *Everyone* on an airplane has to mask up or be ejected and be subject to crippling fines. This includes babies and the handicapped.

308 To finish, if voting does not matter, then the republic is done and you will then either fight where the government will brand your actions illegal--thus you win or die, or you will submit/leave. If submitting, then I would suggest that you hie thee away from AOS or any other social media and shut up about government policies, meanies in society, etc. because that records, regardless of whether you vote or not will act to condemn you for wrongthink. If leaving, best to get your asset and personal protection plans ready for heading elsewhere in the world. If planning American Revolution part two, once again not advisable to discuss what is a crime even in general terms. In essence, if elections are done, then figure all other constitutional rights are done and start your planning for it.
Me, I prefer Churchill's idea of talk talk instead of war war unless there is absolutely no alternative left. Right now there is one which is to work at your state and local level to fix your elections, vote for sound candidates that affect your lives, and work to revamp the current GOP or start on creating your third party. A third party based on the endorsing model is a useful thing too.

They never would be missed - they never would be missed!

Then the idiot Ben Sasse who praises, with enthusiastic tone all norms but ours, and every policy but his own.

And the lady from Wyoming, who dresses like a guy
And who doesn't like the masses and she doesn't want to try

And that singular anomaly, the turtle House Speaker

Exactly why I dropped out.

Not so much infected, as killed in the crib.

The GOPe saw a challenger on the rise and they killed the movement by co-opting it, and subjecting it to IRS scrutiny.

Grifters and fakes at least had their eye on the money and power...they weren't evil like the GOPe.

321 In northern Michigan there's a town which claims to have the worlds largest crucifix. It used to have lots of steps , and embedded in them were pieces of the clothing worn by the followers of Christ. Eventually they were all popped out and stolen. I always wondered about the mindset it took to do such a thing.

322 Just to make sure this doesnt happen again maybe we should put some kind of identification on the baby and parents. Like a patch on their clothes. Yellow maybe?

323 When I'm on a plane I make sure I always have a bottle of water around me, and I sip periodically.

I've had covid, I spent a week last December aching and 103deg fever. It doesn't scare me.

325 BTW, The investiture of time in voting is trivial. Everyone acts like is a big deal but it is not. It takes less time than watching some stupid entertainment on the tube or cat videos on the internet. Part of the issue with our current decay is that few people actually engage in civic activism or party affairs beyond the trivial amount of time to vote--because of muh entertainment. For the most part, people's ancestors spent a lot more time at work, raising families, and yet still found time to participate in elections and parties.

I am crabby, chronically ill, fully employed, and have engaged in voter contacts, etc. in local and state level races for the last twelve years plus engaged in civic campaigns regarding zoning, BOE policies, etc. for exactly zero dollars. I contributed some knowledge on how to determine vote fraud existence for some of the recent electoral lawsuits in a state as well.

Doing nothing is a recipe for nothing but self justifications and self pity leading to depression. Working the system as crooked as it may be, aka vote harder, still leads to changes--see Solidarity in Poland where the odds were far more daunting than the US today.

327 Does the literary and artistic device of three items all go back to "The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost" as it's genesis?

e.g. three wise men, three crosses, etc.

Kris and Tony Pete, probably way late and never seen, but I think most things arise out of utility. You need three points for stability, so early tables, stools, even housing (teepee type structures) needed a minimum of three things to be usefull. From there it just carries over naturally to other parts of life, kind of a subconscious association. My three cents worth.
