GAINZZZ!: The Return

I have very mild gains. Lost three pounds on a five day semi-fast. Meh. Slowly picking up the pace on my walk-runs.

Otherwise, no GAINZZZ to report.

What about you-all? What are your GAINZZZ?

Are you psyched that the government is going to take covid as yet another crisis that shouldn't be allowed to go to waste, and make new completely-wrong "health" demands?

The US Government avoided labeling sugar a fattening substance because of intense lobbying (and some payoffs) from... The Sugar Institute.

50 As I mentioned earlier, I went on one of the commercial diets and lost some weight last year. I also started working out and I have been doing it pretty consistently for several months now, which is a big deal for me because I'm ordinarily not someone who likes to be active.

My go to fitness person is Caroline Girvan on YouTube. I am a massive fan of hers. Her workouts are very high quality and challenging. I did her first 50-day workout program last year. Wasn't expecting but my body really changed - looks quite toned now. I'm a little behind on this year's 50-day program due to travel but I am consistent with it.

She works super hard to put out awesome workouts almost every day of the week. If you are healthy and mobile enough to do her workouts, I highly recommend her. And her YT channel is growing super fast. Over 680K subscribers since starting last April.

Like those lizards in the desert. Not fun. Your balance doesn't know what you're doing, your muscles don't know, your kinaesthesia doesn't know. You're like a quivering flailing GOPe inching across the mat.

At first I'd fall down and whimper like a pussy baby before sets were done. Which was par for course for me. But your body figures it out eventually. And then the instructor finds something else to torture you with.

91 I like carbs way too much to go on any of the diets that cut out food groups or certain macronutrients. Tracking calories, watching my portions and exercising works fine for me. Although food is the primary thing for weight loss, IMO. It's easy to eat 100 calories in a couple of bites but takes a while to burn it off. A significant portion of my weight loss was before I started exercising.

I forgot to report my gains, so here's them:

I got stricter on my keto diet, and am feeling better as a consequence. My abs are starting to show through for the first time in my life. I've gotten my per set pushup count up to 60, so I'm doing two sets of those. Thinking about dropping it to 45-50 and doing three sets today.

Thanks Ace for the keto encouragement! I'm planning on getting in the best shape of my life, why not right? You're only 29 once.

There's a minimalist routine called "the simple six": pushups, pullups, kettle squat, kettle swing, kettle shoulder press, walking/jogging with a weighted backpack.

That's a simple routine I've ended up with when classes and gyms were closed. There's a book by Clinton Dobbins. But It really is just those exercises done in series with short breaks. You are just building up repetitions and reducing your break time.

It's not an advanced exercise. It won't really bulk you up. But it will keep you in decent shape.

The people at DietDoctor once answered the question, why are doctors so continually wrong on what comprises a healthy diet.

Their answer...they only know what they've been taught and read in approved journals. Most of them are basically mechanics. They do not have independent scientific thought on the subject.

My guess is that this is true for dieticians as well.

Over the course of a year knocked off 30 pounds going from 215 to 185 and 3 to 4 inches off my waist. For decades breakfast was 189 calories, one English muffin with butter. 189 calories over 365 days works out to almost 20 pounds I didn't have to burn last year, and since I lost 30 the timed part must work to an extent. . May have crept up a pound or two since winter has arrived but that will burn off once I get on my bike again.

And then a couple years ago someone figured out that the entire FDA "Food Pyramid" was created by a single food activist/lunatic.

The best diet has to be a variation of the one our hunter/gatherer ancestors enjoyed, since that's the diet our bodies evolved to eat over a million years.

A handful of nuts and fruit every couple of hours washed down by pure water, with an occasional helping of fish or red meat. And plenty of walking.

Of course those ancestors were mostly starving to death their entire lives, so being able to eat small portions every couple of hours isn't EXACTLY their diet, but close enough.

Eating every few hours is an effective way to convince your body you aren't starving(which keeps your metabolism from slowing down). The stomach has a sort of startup cost in calories, around a couple hundred, and takes about 2-3 hours to turn off. So yeah, eating more and smaller meals a day is a pretty effective way to lose weight.

167 There's a plastic and rubber wheel thingamajig thing that my wife said really helped her. It's called a Plexus Chirp Wheel, it's about 10" and is overpriced at 50-60 bucks. But you kind of roll your back up onto it and use your legs to move your self back and forth. It's just a wheel but has a soft surface for your back.

I got the set of 3 chirps of different sizes (same price as 1) and use them a few times a week. It "hurts so good" while doing it, but feels very relaxing on my back afterwards.

168 122 Getting the necessary fats seems complicated. Do you have any strategies to share?

You have to get good quality meat, paying more for steaks, but picking the better marbled cuts for a couple dollars more is still cheaper than going through a Wendy's drive through. I also found that dialing back on the chicken helps as there isn't enough good fats in the store bought offerings.

170 "The government hasn't made a peep about people getting healthier to mitigate Covid risk." -- She is so spot on. I'm not a fat-shamer, but when fat (and I don't mean slightly pudgy) politicians don't fear covid enough to drop 30, 40, 50+ pounds, and get their stats (BP, cholesterol count, glucose level, etc., etc., etc., under control, it's cognitive dissonance. Take S.F. Mayor London Breed. (Take her, please.) She's black (apparently a high-risk group) and quite overweight. No idea what other health problems she has, but she certainly does not fear covid to any substantial degree otherwise she would have set the example by losing the weight and setting the example of healthy eating (which is easy to do if you want to - have you seen the prices of fast food these days?), exercise, and other such things. Would have been a great civic ad campaign. Nope. Why? She isn't seriously worried about dying from it. Maybe catching it, but not dying from it. Ergo....

172 I probably broke all the "rules" - ate carbs, ate extremely late, etc. Being in a calorie deficit worked and I got to eat all the food groups I love. Of course, I have never really been one to eat a lot of junk food or dessert and I find healthy food tasty, so that helped.

More power to you low carb folks. I love carbs (although I so try to eat the healthier ones) and I don't really like meat that much. Wouldn't work for me.

Me.

I just don't eat as much. I'm hungry a lot.

I long ago figured out that losing weight is about how much you eat, and little else. You can get some quick GAINZ with a new diet, but ultimately, sustained loss is about food in general. Physical exercise tends to get overbalanced by an increase in diet, unless you're Michael Phelps and you're swimming for 10 hours a day.

I used to eat larger portions, but over time got used to smaller ones. I'm not tracking calories right now, but when I was I was trying to operate at a slight deficet (fark I canna spell it) or at a maintenance level. You can math our what your basic metabolic rate is (BMR) and that is how many calories your body needs just to exist. Like, pump blood and stuff. And you can compare that to how much you generally take in. There are lots of sites that give decent estimates of calorie content of foods, just for a data perspective. And yea I know its not as simple as calories in, calories out, but it gives you information.

213 OK, here is something I have come up with recently:

The Conservative Case for wearing a mask outside all the time, even when the mask requirement has been lifted:

First of all, let me address one point. I think that the Karens are going to be wearing masks long after the lockdowns and the COVID scares end. So, if you continue to wear a mask even after a lot of people cease, you won't be that much out of place.

So, why in the world would I be encouraging people to wear masks? I have been as vociferous a critic of the stupid mask mandate as anyone. But, think about it. Anyone wearing a mask, dark glasses, and a hat of some kind (say a baseball cap) has about a 99% chance of foiling facial recognition software. So, this epiphany came to me last night. Wear a mask, everyone will assume you are a Karen or a Darren, a self-righteous virtue signaller who is showing that YOU are willing to go the extra-mile because you are better than everyone else. When in fact, what you are doing is subverting the nascent police state that is developing with surveillance cameras everywhere and wide use of facial recognition software. So, if privacy concerns you, wear a mask, hat, and shades.

The issue with starvation diets is your metabolism will adjust(slow down) because your body thinks it's starving. The body largely reads off of volume(part of why high calorie low density sugar makes people fat). Fat and protein also tend to be more filling per calorie than many carbs, though it varies a lot. Lettuce actually takes more calories to digest than you get out of it.

239 brother northern lurker, do you have hip issues too? Often we can protect weak joints by surrounding them with sturdy muscle. Sometimes that doesn't work obviously, but its possible to get some relief. I learned after having my kid that my glutes that I allowed to get really slack were causing me all kinds of pain that I had attributed to sciatica or tight hamstrings.

I hope you get some relief!

Read a book from the 80's that said the same thing about reducing calories too much to lose weight.
Your body senses a period of want and goes into starvation mode. You become lethargic, your metabolism slows, your hunger pangs increase.
It's funny that this is built into the wiring as an attempt to keep you alive, but the dieter blames the diet and usually quits.

249 I long ago figured out that losing weight is about how much you eat, and little else. You can get some quick GAINZ with a new diet, but ultimately, sustained loss is about food in general. Physical exercise tends to get overbalanced by an increase in diet, unless you're Michael Phelps and you're swimming for 10 hours a day.

Many people get in a vicious cycle trying to do starvation diets because they get good results at first. The increased hunger eventually gets them to quit, they pork up, then get back to the same diet. The general idea of needing a net calorie burn is right, but the implementation matters quite a bit.

272 >>> 122 Getting the necessary fats seems complicated. Do you have any strategies to share?

If I can chime in on getting fats... it sounds harder than it actually is.

Fattier cuts of meat, and you don't have to skimp on bacon, brats, sausage. Clean natural cooking oils (coconut, olive, ghee, real European butter like Kerry Gold with a higher fat content. Most fast food places, even with keto ok foods, use canola and bad oils, so I eat there sparingly and mostly cook clean at home). Lots of dairy like real cheeses, heavy whipping cream, cream cheese.

I make several dishes with cream cheese as a base, like a roux or alfredo, every week, with shirataki noodles or zoodles or cauli rice.

If you are worried about the health side... all my vitals-- BP, heart rate, cholesterol--improved with a high fat diet. I got compliments from my doctors.

I think not having a sweet tooth is a huge reason I lost weight rather than gained during my stint working at home during the Wuhan Times. If I do snack, it's little carrots, or celery, or nuts, or trail mix (not the kind with M&Ms). Oh, and string cheese.

That is actually how instructors get you to build up to weird painful stuff. So they start with a bunch of slow pike reps. Then they go to weird rotating planks and these crawls and when your muscles exhaust and you reset into pikes and you're like, oh yeah finally the pike. And then the pike or normal plank or plank variants are happy fun time.

You're best off measuring by body-fat percentage. Athletes go to abnormally low percentages for competitions so that's not a good comparison for a general maintenance weight. If you don't feel like you've got a lot of extra fat hanging on certain parts of your body, you're probably fine.
