84 Dr. Mabuse et al,

Most of those questions I've had since moving to sort-of the country in 2003 have been answered by neighbors. That's truly the best argument for living out here. The people help each other. I canceled AAA in 2004 because they would only believe the roads were plowed if the DOT told them so. We (someone with a tractor) plow our own roads. I got a neighbor to help with my car and haven't considered paying for roadside assistance since. Get to know your neighbors, especially if they have been there a while. And stock up on their favorite drinks. It's better than our soon-to-be worthless currency.

The nice thing about country living: No need to pay 'sewer rents' every three months, or a water bill every three months. That adds up over the years to a huge pile of money. About once every decade you'll have to replace your well pump, still cheaper then a utility.

But you have to 'do your homework' about maintaining those systems and never abuse them. It can be extremely costly to have to replace a drain field because you (or prior owner) filled it with grease - which won't allow proper leeching of effluent into the ground.

I lived near a small town in the country for many years. Best place I've ever lived. My husband
and I raised our family there and I love every minute of it.

When you are on a well, it is best if you have a generator in case the power goes out. If you buy a place with septic, make sure the tank is cleaned out before you move in. Also--be sure you have internet access before you buy.

It took me 9 years, but I have a whole-house generator that runs on a separate propane tank.

Seriously, it's easy to live in the country. But you have to be more self-reliant, and not expect smooth, paved roads.

But if you are an asshole, your path is not smooth.

91 51 I keep thinking how nice it would be to live in the country, but then I realize that I don't know anything at all about how to do it. Who ploughs the snow off the country roads in the winter? How do you run a well? Can it operate if the electricity goes out? What's the deal with sump pumps? Everyone seems to have them - do properties flood every spring? How do you operate a septic tank? So many questions... Is there some online course on "An Idiot's Guide to Moving to the Country?" I could look up?
Posted by: Dr. Mabuse at February 06, 2021 09:23 AM (dVgJw)

I lived in far western MA for 25 years.

the roads crews are excellent, most have the roads crystal within hours of the ending of a storm and plow into bad storms through out the night

I have a standby generator and I lose power 2 or 3 times a year , for a few hours. The Nat Grid grid crews are also excellent.

93 But you have to 'do your homework' about maintaining
those systems and never abuse them. It can be extremely costly to have
to replace a drain field because you (or prior owner) filled it with
grease - which won't allow proper leeching of effluent into the ground.

Posted by: Pennsylvania Conservative at February 06, 2021 09:35 AM

If you have a large house on a septic you really should have a grease trap and empty it bi-weekly. Almost everyone I know here in NE Texas does not run a grease trap and they have to get their septic pumped out once or twice a year. $450 each time that truck shows up.

The State Roads are cleared by the State DOT.

Yes, but 'depth to water' is key. My well pump is about 190 feet down, but I can see water at about 20 feet down. If it was only six or eight feet to water (a high water table) I could have a problem in my lower level. The county comes out every couple years and measures my well as well as hundreds other as part of a county wide assessment for growth purposes.

I had a good friend who loved tinkering with electronics, even as a boy he'd pull apart smoke detectors and fiddle with them, figuring out how they worked. He died tragically, and I was thinking about him a lot. That night the smoke detector kept first giving low battery "beeps" (even with a knew battery) and then went off a couple of times for no reason. Never happened again like that.

186 Our undisclosed location used to have a well. I believe it was about 85 feet to water, which sounds correct as we're on a hill some 80 feet above the Ohio River.

Unfourtantly, the well was contaminated with C-8, a chemical compound and known cancer risk that is the result of polymer manufacturing IIRC.

The movie "Dark Waters" was about this issue.

187 I keep thinking how nice it would be to live in the country, but then I realize that I don't know anything at all about how to do it.

BTDT. If you are on a school bus route, it gets plowed, mostly, at least in pre-covid times. Smart to own a high-clearance 4X4, like a pickup or Suburban, that can negotiate a foot of snow, and the odd deeper drift. My well pump runs on electricity, as does the pressure system that distributes the water around the house. You need to have a backup generator. When power goes out, it can be hours to get restored. Sump pumps? Mostly on an as-needed basis. Can surface water or ground water find its way into your basement? Then you want a sump pump. If you have one, good idea to make it run periodically, (continued)

It's sort of an unwritten rule not to come to a neighbors door. If they're outside, you may approach. If you swap phone numbers or text, get permission to come over first.

If someone shows up at my front door unannounced they better have a damn good reason. They're not going to be greeted in a friendly manner. It just comes with the territory, I think.

My township even makes door-to-door solicitors get a permit first. I imagine it makes notifying next of kin easier.

Don't worry...it'll soon be the "warmest winter ever".
-----
Heh, West Coast lives in a different weather pattern from rest of Main 48. Northern coastal portion it rains all year, but only varies a little in temperature so snow is rare. Southern portion is an over-crowded desert, leading to artificial drought and shrieks of the world drying up and blowing away. Or being drowned. Only snowfall is the stuff that keeps them from getting to Las Vegas sometimes.

Now as for the rest of us who live north of Tennessee... It's 21 degrees here in the sunny land beside the Great Miami, and if it actually gets to 32 today I'll be impressed. There's a little snow on the ground, but it's the ice that makes things interesting.

It took the county that long to build temporary road structures for public use. And this was before folks were working from home!

255 I hate septic systems. That probably stems from one particular family reunion/holiday at a country house when, one evening, the septic system clogged and everything started backing up. Father in law said "wait I have a cleanout!" so the men in the family, armed with flashlights and shovels, went out to fix the trouble.

dug it up, opened it up, and out flowed the effluent, with one giant brown log riding the crest of the wave. One brother in law spotlighted it and said "gawd! look at the size of that thing!" while everyone laughed. Then he turned his light on me and said "YOU were the last one on the toilet before this happened, weren't you? YOU clogged the whole house up!!!" There I stood, spotlighted and surrounded by accusers. Talk about a walk of shame.

Decades later, when Milady and I began trying to salvage the much-deteriorated house, we found the kitchen sink, and only that sink, drained west to ... what we found was basically just a simple 3'x3' concrete box in the ground! Could've overfilled that sucker real quick.

I have now lived to be nearly twenty years older than Dad ever got to be. Gives a certain perspective on age and wisdom...

I've figured out from visiting a lot of relatives; draw an east-west line through the country that runs through Kansas City. Almost every house in the country north of that line will have a basement; below that line they are very rare and expensive. My guess is that it has to do with whether you're focused on staying warm, or staying cool. The old pier and beam houses in the south were originally set up so that the wind could blow under the house as well as over it.

This depends on the individual. I have seen some people make reasonable transitions while others make dangerous ones. To some extent it depends on what you've seen in your own family, or how steep the decline is and whether it severely affects frontotemporal lobe function.

I detest Cuomo, but the man he has in charge of these policies seems to be a real monster and was the person who planned a triage system in the case of scarcity of equipment/beds which was quickly hidden when Cuomo realized that such a system would be unpopular. It was this man, Howard Zucker, who developed the nursing home policy and the ventilator triage plan.

One of those things I didn't calculate, in making the decision to move out of the big city, into the sticks (sort of), was the cost of utilities.

It might have something to do with the distance it has to travel, but my sewer bills are in the 20s. My water.. in the 20s. Energy... as high as the 90s in the middle of winter, as low as.. the 20s in warm/dry months.

It becomes quite clear that utilities cost more in big cities, in large part, due to the graft.

364 Septic systems have to be pumped because building codes require oversized ones. They act like holding tanks. Properly sized and managed systems don't have to be pumped.

And my 95 Mazda 626 did just fine in the snow. One night, I followed the snow plow home. I had studded tires but no chains. Plow was all over the place. He finally turned off and I drove two miles of unplowed roads to get home. It was up to the top of the wheel well but the car did fine. Old VW bugs do fine in snow too because of the tire size. Bonus is that you'll be dressed warm enough to walk home because the heater won't keep you warm.

Why anyone puts their bodies in septic tanks is beyond me. Amateur move.

Dealing with that right now here at stately Casa Backwardio. Requires daily unclogging after frequent checks especially before taking a shower or doing the laundry.

392 370 >>This seems to be a trend. Are grocery stores aren't even bothering with "the big game" supplies this year. . .

IIRC, Coke and Pepsi are not bothering to run superbowl ads. Now that's got to be a scary trend for the NFL and whichever channel is running it -- what happens when the *advertisers* walk away?!

393 379. I don't think BLM is a corporate tool, but a donk tool and corporate America is paying protection money. Donk stormtroopers like antifa and BLM seem to be rewarded far beyond the level of tools. It was fascinating to see the different treatment given to left wing protestors v conservative protestors.

The donks literally knelt before BLM and paid their bill.

The GOPe disavowed conservative protestors and called for them to be purged.

It sounds like a newer home. My parents and the cottage-owners near them have pre-code underground tanks. You'dneedto tear upthe yard to open them.

Better to bury the body in a cedar swamp and let nature take its course.

This may very well be true. The GOPe seems to have given itself too much credit for their gains in the house and have not yet awakened to the fact that their rank and file congressmen had less to do with their election than PDT did. I don't believe they have caught on to the anger felt by the voters, but see it as transient. This also explains Teh Ted's "reckless rhetoric" comment. He sees himself as the 2024 candidate if he can push PDT out of the way. He is in for a rude awakening.
