CNN's Ratings Crash 44% in Post-Trump Outrage Desert
While January 2021 will go down in the ratings record books for CNN, the last week of the month may offer a portent of what the post-Trump era will be like for the network. In the first week of the Biden administration, the AT&T-owned news channel saw the audiences that had been flooding into primetime recently drop precipitously on Jan. 25-29 compared with the highs of previous weeks. Meanwhile, rival Fox News Channel saw its own ratings only dip slightly after weeks of registering its own sharp declines. Another network that has been characterized as left-leaning, MSNBC, has also seen significant declines but nowhere near as steep as what has hit CNN..."Characterized as left-leaning."
While it's too early to conclude any longer-term direction for news ratings after just one week, the downturn could be interpreted as an indicator of what many industry observers had anticipated: With Biden in the White House, networks that have spent the last four years railing consistently against Trump have lost the main attraction that energized their audience bases, making it difficult to hold onto the elevated viewing levels.Alas, this means that Fox will just assume that its mad dash to the left, its headlong Extreme Makeover into CNN-with-country-music, did not cause its own ratings fall. They'll revert to their previous assumption: That the dramatic fall in ratings was just a natural consequence of a demoralized audience, so they don't have to change anything. Chris Wallace and Paul Ryan forever, yo. Tucker Carlson had a good formulation about this: For five years, the "news" organizations' business model has simply been to gin up mass-hatred for Trump, and then get ratings by pandering to the hatred they'd created. But Trump's gone now. And yet, CNN and MSNBC and the networks still need ratings. So now they're hunting anyone who supported Trump. That will be their next Ratings Generator. As Carlson says, "Now that Trump's gone, you get to be Trump." It's like Time Magazine chose the most hated villain in history: YOU. But I guess that's really not the ratings draw that CNN needs it to be. It's a non-Fox clip, so view without guilt. I have it cued to 7:13, just before he makes this particular point, but the whole opening monologue is good, as usual.

Something has to give. I see two possibilities:
A. People will create new news and entertainment products to appeal to an audience that actually exists.
B. They will all be consolidated as a singular, state-controlled media outlet

Same here. Once on the road, my family and I were subjected to national "news" in a low-rent diner. The national "news" consisted of 22 minutes of neuron-killing stories, which IIRC, comprised: the head dago accused of adultery (imagine), Asian tiger moms pushing their children to study (imagine^2), and concluding with a hard-hitting story about a grannie knitting wool caps for people of melanin.
I'm not making this up.

This is *probably* a lot of the story. The audience isn't necessarily shifting to other outlets, it might just be shrinking. A lot of it has gone to streaming, but likely not enough. I strongly suspect the "per-capita hours of media consumption per annum" level - if it were measurable - is dropping.

Go anonymous. I realize there's no such thing in reality, but it's much more egregious to the public if they break into your private accounts and dox you. Although it's probably coming next.
The other strategy is to use strict discipline on posting. Never say anything privately you wouldn't say publicly and base it in rational argument.
And stand by your statements. They aren't looking for wrong-doing. They're looking for you to express guilt. If they can shame you, they win. If you have to say "I was wrong" say it, but don't give in just because someone is yelling at you. They need to break you.

The real trick to independence from the parties in Congress is to actually try to represent people and run your own campaign finance operation. Ron Paul did the same in his day which let him go off the GOP reservation.
On a personal level, that is how McConnell keeps his caucus in line is through his affiliated leadership PAC.

From public opinion research, there is a guy named Yankelovich who used to run polling operations back in the day. He noted that the masses were not asses (a popular public opinion research meme based on public ignorance demonstrated in polling results).
Instead, the masses are rationally ignorant because they have outcome preferences rather than policy preferences. A outcome preference may be something like I want a job, I want good schools, etc. but being ignorant of whether a new stimulus bill or charter school bill will actually help. But, over time, a general mass of the population can acquire an overall policy preference in what they DON'T want based on acquired experience. Basically because of loss preference avoidance by most, the burned hand shuns the fire. Yankelovich calls this coming to public judgment and the Vietnam war was an example he used in his book.

I do not agree. Cruz joined Hawley, not vice versa because he is trying to both stake out the most conservative in the 2024 field yet remain tolerable to the big donors.
The big issue with Republicans is that they consistently fall for what someone says rather than watch what they do.
Credit claiming on a bill that goes nowhere or speechifying on a red meat issue in the Senate is far too common. Give me someone that has actually run something, a corporation, a state, etc. De Santis in Fla is one such to watch, he was a relative firebrand in the House but has proven to be a good administrator. Nikki, is one that was a lousy administrator in the SC and failed upwards to the UN where she mouthed off on our nation's enemies but achieved squat. Mittens demonstrated the opposite, a decent administrator as Mass Gov. but a lousy candidate for president and a lousy senator. Different skill sets for Republican presidents are needed beyond forensic skills.
