Oligarchs Shut Down Trading to Save Their Money

This is not America. This is a corrupt oligarchy.

29 The hedge funds fought back. Gamestop only 17 percent shorted now. They blocked retail investors from buying and drove the price down as they can only sell now.
Posted by: brak

@El_Kabong81

10,000 National Guard to Wall Street by 1Monday.

All of them must have their stock portfolios vetted for ties to white nationalists.

So now that they're driving the price down to zero, and costing retail investors billions of dollars-- are they shutting down the machines to protect them?

No? Just the rich and powerful on Wall Street get to have the rules changed to keep them from losing money?

The machines only get shut down to protect the people that pay Janet Yellin $800,000 for a single speech?

I see.

@JackPosobiec

US Congress must subpoena Robinhood, Ameritrade, and Janet Yellen

Today

Do your jobs!

JackPosobiec

If you are upset about Robinhood wait til you hear about the election.

More on Robinhood -- yet another cog in the cartel.

Oh what a shock -- Billionaires' Pet Ben Shapiro wants to lecture us about not upsetting his billionaire funder's apple cart.

Establishment Conservative, Inc. grifter Dan Foster -- who has book calling for 10% less democracy, and trusting "elites" more and the masses less -- is also shilling for the billionaires that fund Conservative, Inc.

@DanFosterType

The US stock market has made anyone who parked a dollar in it over the last 30 years more rich, more safely than any other asset.

Instead of saying "thank you", everyone is like "but that guy is *more* more rich! Let’s set it on all on fire!"

It's weird, I see Conservative, Inc. moving their mouths but the voice I hear is Paul Singer.

Update: China Joe Involved?

So the rumor is now that the White House got involed and told RobinHood, Stash, Etrade and Amertrade to stop the buying of GameStop.
Posted by: Patrick From Ohio

226 Best thing the last few years has done is get more right-wingers off of their slavish worship of the "free market". There is no "free market" and there never has been. Stop being a sucker for oligarchs who hate you. Stop clinging to "principles" while getting pummeled.

The Right is like a guy who agreed to a fight with no low blows and, even though the other guy keeps kicking him in the nuts, he never responds in kind because that would be against the rules. So all he does is complain to the ref, but whenever he complains to the ref, the ref kicks him in the balls, too. So now he's just lying on the ground and whimpering while consoling himself that, hey, at least he still has his principles.

The rubes are important. They provide a shit-ton of liquidity. What happens when you ice them out or they take their ball and go home and quit playing? What do these people think will happen when there are only big, slow-moving institutional investors? Do they really want to play with confidence in what is, in essence, a confidence game?

If you can only sell but not buy, how can you sell if no one's allowed to buy it?
Other real people aren't allowed to buy it. The hedge funds that still need to get out of their short positions can still buy it.

Yep, it certainly looks that way. And in politics, they say that Perception is Reality. I perceive that we are so terribly fucked.
Having none of that "money" I hear so much about, this is a lot of fun to watch. Or at least it will be until the hyperinflation kicks in in a few months. I'm of the opinion that this illegitimate junta's Prime Directive is to destroy this country. And they're just getting started by stealing the election.

You can't complain about Apple, because Tim Cook is gay and that would be homophobic. You can't complain about Google or Microsoft because they're both run by Indians now and that would be racist. You can't complain about Goldman Sachs because that would be anti-semitic.

And it worked. Other industries copied them. The big defense companies now mostly have female CEOs. So now you can't complain about them because that would be sexist, plus they painted the Gay Pride flag on the bombs they dropped on Syria so it would also be homophobic.

I'm interested in learning if Robinhood disclosed to customers in their User/Account Agreements that Robinhood has the ability to stop trading in any stock at any time, EVEN ABSENT REGULATORY ACTION. In other words, even if the SEC permits trading in a stock (and it might be one in your account with us too!), we might capriciously stop trading for our own reasons and stick you, the account holder, with the losses.

I smell a massive class-action lawsuit here.

I haven't been following it all that closely, but it is only some brokerages that are stopping buying. Even if there wasn't a buyer on the other side, the brokerage or market maker could buy the stock themselves and then go to another market to sell it. The brokerage normally operates like a bookie as an intermediary, but in some contexts they could hold onto the stock for longer periods of time to conduct transactions (market makers regularly have stockpiles of stock for what they make a market in).

Making it legal outright, you are simply betting against an overleveraged short sell. Sharing that insight also legal. The fact that by doing so increased the chance the counter hedge would work, incidental. As long as the investment had a reasonable chance to make money by betting against the short sell, sharing that advice is not inofitself collusion even if you openly talk about the greater chance of success and profit with multiple investors because of price pressure.

we give foreign aid by taking loans the middle class has to pay back.

the hedge funds/govt' black financial ops, bum rush weak publicly traded corps to profit off price panics they induce with the short selling.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at January 28, 2021 01:25 PM (R2biG)

It does not. Stock price rarely affects the solvency of a company (counterexample would arguably be Tesla being able to finance itself during cash burn years or other tech stocks).

That sometimes happens but usually companies don't try to game their own stock.

Now the other 50% of your shares are now also worth $1.25 and the interest you gained from the contract ain't covering the loss. Congratulations you bankrupted a company.

Except this time the Hedge fund assholes didn't just sell the 50% they bought, the supposedly sold the other 50% and an additional 40% that didn't exist.

It doesn't, what they're carrying on about is destroying the hedge funds that were stupid enough to short more shares than were in circulation.

Extra fun: it appears now that one particular hedge fund positioned themselves to profit greatly from this, and then quite likely spurred on the original short squeeze attempt against the others. In other words, this wasn't even spontaneous.

That fund took advantage of the retail trading halt to unload their shares and clobber half the retail investors.

They get around that by being entertainment. Generally the law recognizes two categories of people, professionals and amateurs & entertainment(more broadly non-professionals).

Professionals have all kinds of liabilities and restrictions regarding how they give advice. Amateurs & entertainment can basically say whatever the hell they want. They could end up dividing categories further or lumping in certain people with professionals.

425 Now the other 50% of your shares are now also worth $1.25 and the interest you gained from the contract ain't covering the loss. Congratulations you bankrupted a company.

Except for one small detail: all of this is taking place in the secondary market. The company already has the money from investors when it sold share in the primary market, i.e., when it was a counter party to the sale.

But the secondary market involves transactions between individuals and institutions who previously bought shares from the company; the company is not involved in transactions in the secondary market.

Look at this way: if you buy a car from GM, and wrap it around a phone pole, does that hurt GM?

An even better analogy: if you sell the car, does GM get any money from the sale? That's the secondary market for GM products.

Bottom line: once the transaction with GM is complete, they couldn't care less what you do.

Hey Pop, don't listen to me because I'm a moron, but look at time-based index funds. I think Vanguard has one that goes up to 2045. The year 2045 that is. Forgive any mistakes this is all voice transcription. The farther away they are the more aggressive they'll be at the more money they'll learn. The closer the date the safer. It's easy to set up an account at Vanguard Charles Schwab or any of the rest. I use Vanguard and like them, and they have great customer service. The important thing is to get started now. Time does all the work, even if it's just $50 a month. Starts adding up after 20 years and compound interest is doing his job.

It's an easy way to start saving for a car for the kids to. Put $100 a month away every month and by the time they're old enough to drive you'll have a pretty good chunk of change. Same goes for college, although there might be better vehicles for that like 529s

A total devaluation of a company's stock usually precipitates a loss of credit in which if they were operating in the red even with a reasonable outlook to recover profitability can precipitate chapter 11/7. Basically a short sell is like a vulture, it looks for a company undergoing hard times and seeks to kill it by pushing it into bankruptcy, destroying stock value, and then skimming a portion of that lost stock value as profit.

Posted by: Wyatt Earp at January 28, 2021 01:31 PM (qoNQ/)

Climate change is the mechanism to to gain a foothold in every major aspect of public and commercial life. Consider it a social credit policy only applied to corporations and board members, including criminal prosecutions for not getting on board. One that ties "social justice" and wealth distribution to solving -- whatever. Basically economic fascism with ties to UN the UN as the ultimate authority. His energy policy (still up at the campaign site) spells this out clearly. Not quite the extent of the Green New Deal, but on the same page.

It also doesn't hurt that creates a brand new market, fully driven by regulation, backstopped through subsidies by the taxpayer, where those on the ground flow can make many billions.

540 >>>>>>Very few companies can ever use their stock as collateral.
Gamestop's collateral is probably mostly real estate and to a much much
lesser degree inventory.

Whether they use the stock directly as collateral or not. Stock represents what the market sees as "residual value" once all debts are paid, along with "outlook toward future profitability".
When your stock is 0 the market is telling the whomever you are trying to get money from that the company has neither residual value nor an outlook toward future profitability which will not necessarily outright eliminate your ability to borrow but it can make it practically un-afordable by raising your interest rates for future loans too high, and making it impossible for you to do a bond sale at a reasonable price.

596 I love this who news cycle. It gives me hope. What if we're approaching the big tech problem the wrong way. Twitter's market cap is 48B. Control could be gained for about 25 billion. That's only about a 360$ investment for every trump supporter. We could buy it out and fire all the existing directors, and Jack Dorsey, and then put in place a first amendment based TOS.

Or, if we really want to flex, we'd all need about 10k each to take over google. Realistically though, it'd probably be a lot more, because there's a lot of Trump voters who likely don't have that kind of equity. But.... I wonder what percentage of Google is owned by conservatives already? I suspect its a fairly decent percentage already.

Or we could just buy visa, which has a market cap of 466B, we'd only need about 234B, which is $3,300 per Trump voter, and then we could shut down google and apple's app store. Risky business you know. Lots of fraud.
