Trump Considering Starting a Third Party

"The Patriot Party."

President Trump has talked in recent days with associates about forming a new political party, according to people familiar with the matter, an effort to exert continued influence after he leaves the White House.

Mr. Trump discussed the matter with several aides and other people close to him last week, the people said. The president said he would want to call the new party the "Patriot Party," the people said...

It's unclear how serious Mr. Trump is about starting a new party, which would require a significant investment of time and resources.

Well, Trump skimped on his own election campaigns so I can answer how much money he'd pour into it: Like, forty bucks, total.

That said, his biggest contribution could just be as a high-profile endorser. Third-parties remain fringe concerns because no one believes they could actually win. If people did think they could win, more people would vote for them.

It's a Catch-22.

But if you have a high-profile endorser/patron, you get over that hump pretty quickly.

Ross Perot was able to turn the Reform Party into a significant player in the 1992 election -- and that was with him flaking in and quitting and then unquitting.

It's time.

The GOP is as aggressive an enemy against us as the Democrats are. It's time to starve that beast. Let them see how far they can get without actual human voters.

Very Much Related: Rush Limbaugh talked up Peter Schweitzer's disclosures about Mitch McConnell's and his wife's financial ties to China.

33 Dan Bongino is really, really against a third party. I'm listening to the podcast, and I'm curious about why he thinks so.

The only reticence - the only one - is that it will mean that the Democrats will dominate the next two or three election cycles. For me, while this is a feature and not a bug, it will mean that we'll probably lose Clarence Thomas during that period.

I'll hear him out, but right now, I'm on the GOP Delenda Est train. Let them go the way of the Whigs.

38 Needs a better name, but I'm down. Ross Perot *nearly* pulled this off a generation ago, and had headwinds Trump doesn't (namely that he himself was not nearly as famous or accomplished, paired with the fact that a lot of people didn't understand that the GOP was dogshit useless).

I doubt this happens, but like I said, I'm down. I don't think Trump will accomplish anything at all out of office, except perhaps by retaining some of his wealth and keeping himself and his family out of prison. Given who's running things, that alone will be a hell of an accomplishment...

The new party would have to go through a process of developing core platform positions and in the process could potentially pick up a lot of more conservative Democrats who've held off leaving the Dems because of the stigma of being a Repub. But to that end, Trump would need to keep a very calculated distance, I think.

There are certainly more people pissed at both parties than are in favor of either.

The Tea Party heeded the warnings of the GOP that the "Dems would win everything", and tried to stay with the power structure of the GOP. Now, we know that this is how they want it, because you can't go with moderates they don't give you--you can only go with moderates they give you.

You just had the fucking leader of the GOP in Washington tell the President of the United States that if he pardons certain people he'll push for conviction on the Senate, in a VASTLY unconstitutional end-run against the prohibition of Bills of Attainder.

I was there at the original discussion of the GOP, we listened to these people.
FUCK seditionist Bitch McConnell and FUCK the GOP 4-ever!

Recruit candidates for your party to go after the GOPe at the state legislative level in every single state. You have 80 million people who will vote for actual conservatives at the state level in 2022. And of course, go after the GOPe at the Federal Level in 2022 as well.

None of those 80 million voters were voting for the GOPe in the 2020 General Election. We were voting for Trump.

These bastards just throw Americans under the bus once they've gotten what they want.

Doesn't even matter if there's two or hell, a hundred parties. Votes don't count anymore... and I'll bet you they haven't counted for years. I'm heavily leaning towards the last four years being an op against non-conformist non-liberals to lull us before the end. A chance to openly label us all terrorists so they can finally start the real shit and be like, "well, see? even your own leader can't stand you, you evildoers."

The masks are such a great tool, they're not going away. Not after an entire year of dehumanization that enabled the bully population to become tyrants to their neighbors. It all fits in so well, we fell into the trap of parties and men. It started generations ago, now it's just open and the pretense is gone.

168 !00% against this. I don't know how much time people think we have to try to turn this in a better direction, but three or four election cycles would cement Democrat policies forever n this country.

Take for example Social Security. A program set up in 1935 based on life expectancy, retirement age, retirement numbers, etc. from almost 100 years ago. You cannot even mention changing or eliminating that program before being branded not just a heretic but needing to be removed from public life. Remember what happened to Bush when he propsed allowing it to become optional? He was almost impeached , at least by the media.

Allowing these clowns in Congress the freedom to set up more and more of these programs, particularly true entitlement ones while playing around with a third party that has no real donors and can barely get on a ballot is just hastening unecessarily the suicide of this country via government.

Nationally? For sure. State level, though, elections may still matter depending on your state. Local probably matters. Start small. Get good people (if they exist - time will tell, despite my pessimism) to fix things at the local and state levels. Fix the voting system and go up against the Feds when they claim "voter suppression."

It's probably a lost cause, yes. It is certainly a lost cause at the federal level. But state/local, perhaps not entirely.

The PP (which is how the left will refer to it when they're not calling them the new Nazis) will caucus with the R's for show, but if there are enough local & state & eventual House wins, then they become a true force for change. Heard about 2/3 of it but he was reflecting on the Trump legacy in a spirit of gratitude.

And, he had very interesting things to say on the psychology of leftist overreach and the openings that may leave. The overreach, he posits (quite plausibly) from leftist psychology. They simply lack the character to understand they arrived at their position by manipulation/cheating, and Trump hatred, and really have no nomandate. Hence, they will believe their own BS and likely overstep.

He was also quite careful to walk up to, imply, but not overtly state his conclusion that they f ing cheated the election.

What a great intellect, great patriot and great human being.

278 Yeah I'm done voting for the GOP in general either way. As a national organization they're a fraud, existing only to line their pockets as "not Democrats" while ideologically stationkeeping a few elections behind the progs.

I refuse to reward that level of betrayal.

Serious talk here: the primary benefit of a third party would likely be saving us the time and hassle of having to write-in candidates occasionally - up until such a time that the Dempublicans cracked down too hard on the new party and stepped on their dick in such a way that did not allow for un-stepping. thus starting the festivities.

That is assuming the progs even allow a new party to get off the ground without stamping it out from the get-go. They certainly won't let Trump or any of his people anywhere near a soap box.

Our opponents are openly talking about throwing us in camps, taking our kids away, and conducting military operations against us on American soil. You're not going to vote that away.

324 There is some pretty good research regarding third (and more) parties. You need proportional representation if you want at least three strong parties, and majoritarian countries (first past the post) have two major parties. We are currently a majoritarian party but several things can be done--one is to change electoral votes in a state via simple legislation to the NE and ME solution--allocate by congressional district. Urban fraud becomes much less profitable in presidential elections. Second, consider changing your state to rank order voting for local and state offices.

The major issue is that the United States does not have a cohesive homogeneous population any more which does not match the requirements for majoritarian systems. In essence, political science will tell you that a parliamentary system with coalition type politics of multiple parties and subregional governments like state fits this model better.

Posted by: lowandslow at January 20, 2021 06:13 PM (qH6FZ)

326 in case you wondered, why there will never be any honest federal elections again - Biden and Harris are going to mandate mail in balloting for the entire country, just like the west coast and some other states do already. Once that happens, every federal election for every office will be predetermined by those in power, and I doubt the election day votes will even be counted. (why should they bother?)

we look for electoral solutions because that was the system we were brought up to believe existed. But it's dead. Parties, organizations, voting (pretending to vote) - none of that matters any more. It's all dead. Pretending it isn't is just wishful thinking.

Posted by: Tom Servo at January 20, 2021 06:13 PM (trdmm)

Other states that are "out of reach" for fixing, for a center - right reform party: California, Oregon, Washington, Massachusetts, New York, Delaware (ptui!), New Jersey.

GOPe just like to meter out the insane Dem policy preferences over time. So instead of immediate total illegal alien amnesty, it'll be total amnesty spread out over a couple of years with a few extra billion for defense contractors to put up "a virtual wall." Instead of a Green New Deal that nationalizes the economy overnight, it'll be one that nationalizes everything except mega-corporations and sugar growers in Florida in five years. 358 Realistically, white America probably has to accept that they are going to be a hated minority for generations to come in this evil empire and learn to thrive inside the empire or break away from it.

The Ruling Class has no intention of lifting the boot off your neck. This new Woke Era was a response by the Oligarchs to the Occupy Wall Street stuff and it worked. It redirected hatred aimed at the Oligarchs into hatred aimed at ordinary white people.

They're not gonna stop doing that. They're only gonna intensify it. Multi-national Empires like the USA always need a scapegoat. And our Overlords have clearly decided that whites are just the scapegoat they needed.

So get used to Overlord Indians like Kamala lecturing poor whites about their privilege and racism. It's not gonna end anytime soon.

405 to continue,
Majoritarian systems only have stability if people agree on what is good, bad, beautiful, and ugly. Otherwise, it becomes an exercise in oppression (or believed oppression of the other side) and upheavals like we are seeing now since 2000 at least.

Majoritarian systems in this kind of environment only work if turnout is lousy due to stagnation of politics--e.g. the uniparty. High turnout threatens this model as bringing in new voters threatens the stability of the system and in our system, parties are the primary turnout machine. A PR system has parties competing for their particular segment of the population to maximize that segment's turnout. The coalition building occurs after the elections in elite bargaining which is a problem but also promotes system stability. Belgium did not have a governing coalition for years with little discernible effect due to splits between Walloons and Flems (and now immigrants).
The downside is PR coalitions governments rarely become tyrants but are often ineffectual.

The media will not know what to do with themselves. Do they really think people will turn on the news to hear puff pieces about Biden's dogs or what Kamala wore to cabinet meeting? No one cares. He couldn;t get 1000 people to watch a youtube speech.

Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) at January 20, 2021 06:22 PM (sd8p8)

423 I agree this might be good time for a new party. It would be a good way to establish independent communications (perhaps a wholly owned network of servers) among other things. Could even be used as a media platform.
First plank is voter reform. Without a secure, honest accurate vote, our nation doesn't exist. No electronic voting permitted as we just saw how bad that is. Push for strictly paper ballots on controlled paper with a strict chain of custody, securely stored in case of a recount. Vote totals transmitted by phone within the state.

And don't back down. No compromise. The commie Demoprogs don't, so why should we? If we reach across the aisle, it should only be to apply the Louisville Slugger Clue-bat of Loving Kindness to our political opponents.

Yes, you really can ensure 100% perpetual losing streak. DC. Puerto Rico. National ballot harvesting and mail in voting going forward. Bye bye.

So, quit the hand-wringing. GOP is already dead, and the sooner we all admit and start over from scratch, the better. And, even then, this new party still won't win majority or big-ticket positions in future elections, but at least our side may have a unified voice spoken by leadership actually supported by the voting public.

504 Looks at Pelosi's Christmas wish list.

Number one on her list. Trump splitting the GOP vote by starting his own political party in a first past the post electoral system.

.....

Actually, number one on her list was defrauding the American people out of their duly elected President.

Number two was for GOP cucks to watch and while they did it.

The shame is part of the kink.

506 Eh. It's doable, I suppose, but in order to have a chance, you'll need a lot of currently-in-office Republicans to immediately, simultaneously switch to Trump's new party.

In a winner-take-all system like the US, third parties face a major structural disadvantage. I remember reading up on it in college -- people have run game theory mathematical models showing how the benefits to staying in one of the two "major parties" in a 50-percent-plus-one system is just so overwhelming that a third party has to build up a big, big head of steam right from the start. They have to rack up a lot of big wins immediately to entice people to defect. And if the third party DOES succeed, it generally obliterates one of the other two parties, and, you fall right back into the same old two-party stasis.

If anybody could do it, Trump could, but he'd have to approach it with more seriousness and cold determination than he approached his job for much of his presidency.

Part of the problem, yep. The United States was more or less a one-party state from 1932 until 1994, with a few years of GOP congressional control in the Fifties and Republican presidents here and there. During that period, the Left started the transformation of America into a totalitarian state by limiting access to communications. While the Fairness Doctrine was lifted in the Reagan era, once the GOP got a little power it liked to be able to lock out competition, too.

We may be looking at samizdat soon enough.

578 3rd party means a "restructuring season" for conservatives. Think about 2 cycles if we start today. Means we'll lose big, have veto proof supermajorities in both houses. Our first shot at viability will be 2028. And then the Republicans will do what they did with Trump, get butt hurt and support the Democrat. So we would need to build a groundswell majority that can overcome democrats, democrat cheating, and democrats that say they are Republican.

The more likely outcome is the electoral pelting we'll get in the interim at every level will cause Dems to overreach and fast track US international fascism and lead to confrontation and conflict.

So I say let's do it!

Between his status as an ex-president, his rhetorical gifts, the unparalleled devotion of his supporters, and the widespread antipathy Republican voters have for their party leaders, he could absolutely overcome the funding challenges and make it work, whether as frontman, figurehead, or standard-bearer himself.

A Trump-led "Patriot Party" would have immediate strength in rural America and relegate the GOP to a rump party fighting a mostly losing battle with the Democrats for votes in a couple dozen affluent suburbs, just the way Karl Rove, Mitch McConnell, Mark McKinnon, Josh Holmes, et al have always wanted it. As the rump GOP failed to win enough seats to remain viable as a national party, it would fade away like the Whigs, each of its voters would have to make the decision to jump to the Dems or the Patriots, and the realignment would finally be complete.

Give me death. I'm not fooling myself into thinking we can seize back liberty. Not when most of the people on our side can't even bring themselves to stop doing business with Amazon and Netflix. When they can't bring themselves to cancel their Twitter accounts.

618 The Conservative Party in the 60's and early 70's acted as an endorser of conservative candidates in the Republican Party and occasionally put up their own candidate. William Buckley ran for mayor of New York on the Conservative ticket. What if the Patriot Party had the same function. They'd endorse a specific vetted candidate to challenge the incumbent in the primary. This would clarify who were real and who were shills for the incumbent. In 2012 Lindsey Graham had multiple "Tea Party" opponents, thus diluting their ability to win. If in anyway the Patriot Party endorsed candidate gets cheated, they then run under the Patriot Party name and damage the incumbent. McConnell was willing to lose a seat (see Georgia) to keep control of the Party. We too have to be willing to lose to win. If the Patriot candidate causes the Democrats to win, so what. We will never be able to take over the Republicans if we don't get rid of the corrupt ones. Any Patriot that does win can caucus with the Republicans as Bernie does. It also gives them some leverage.

619 @616 I just don't get it. Trump is going to start a new party to challenge the Republican Party because...we nominated him twice?
Want to see how this works? See Great Britain. Conservatives there win more elections than they probably should win, because Labour and the Lib Dems split the liberal vote.

Posted by: CalmTheFuckDown at January 20, 2021 07:46 PM (1LKup)

620 #618. Exactly. That's the model for a 3rd party. You endorse the R candidate when they are acceptable. you run a Patriot candidate as a 3rd party when the R is unacceptable. That way you influence things.

But simply leaving the R party to form another party is stupid and will NEVER work. Period.

626 I think the much better play would be to just create a funding a support apparatus for conservatives trying to oust GOP candidates in primaries. Starting a 3rd party just gives the Dems help, as you now have 2 candidates pulling from the same pool of voters, plus a significant portion if the population will vote for the Republican because they just vote for the party, even if Trump's new party has a better candidate.

Start by targeting these weak Republicans in strong GOP areas. Then when your candidates make it to the general, make a deal with the Republican party to keep them from running thier own 3rd party candidates. Say you won't primary some if thier higher ups (or run your own 3rd play candidates), then 2 years later move your way up, taking out more of these long serving assholes, then lie to them again about not going after them next cycle.

The only good way of making a successful 3rd party is by filing the ranks of the GOP with those who will be part of the party, then when you have enough you have them all break away, so you have a nunnery if incumbents next time around, and a weakened GOP.

Posted by: Rbastid at January 20, 2021 08:33 PM (L6pUV)

627 Another benefit of a third party is the stink of racist that the Democrats put on the Republican Party can be side stepped. Trump has a lot of draw with minorities. That can be used to attract even more, though the party has to be more than Trump. The realignment to a Middle Class workers party will be advanced.

632 The Patriot Party wouldn't be a normal "third" party - AT LEAST half of current GOP voters would immediately join. GOP weakness would help render the remaining Republicans irrelevant (because they won't be able to win elections) and that will push more people and more money into the Patriot Party. It wouldn't be as hard as Ace thinks.

That said, I'm following DJT. If he decides to fix the GOP from the inside out, that's the plan. If he says "new party" - that's the plan.

If anyone could do it, its Mr. Trump. Mr. Perot could have, but he was much more interested in defeating Bush XLI than anything else. Once Bush was gone that was it.

If Mr. Trump sustains his interest he could pull it off. What I'd like to see is a Patriot party get enough candidates into the Volkskammer to where the Republicans are forced to split their support between the Dems and the Ps. Maybe even form a coalition in government (if not win outright) to force real changes in the Volkskammer.

641 First off, I've lost a lot of respect for President Trump following his cucked out final days. Second, a credible political party requires organization, discipline and massive amounts of cash. Donald Trump lacks all three of these.

Any Donald Trump affiliated political party would likely implode after one election cycle or just be dominated by Jared Kushner (just like his presidency).

Posted by: Ernie McCracken at January 20, 2021 11:02 PM (3KbKI)

642 641 The Jared argument is valid, but organization and discipline, really. He ran a billion dollar real estate empire and sleeps 3 hours a day, working the rest. Undisciplined people don't work 21 hour a day. From afar, he did look like he was less than stellar the last weeks, but he was cheated, couldn't find anywhere to get his evidence publicly presented, and was finding out how many around him were stabbing him in the back. I wouldn't be able to control my anger and I'd "burn it all down". I actually admire his restraint considering the major betrayals he faced.

644 Trump could build a party by becoming a significant player in off year elections. Both New Jersey and Virginia have elections for statewide office and legislatures. And New York has a mayoral election. Then there are the 2022 midterms. If he could show some high profile wins there, the party infrastructure would already be in place for 2024. Maybe it's time for him to pick up the phone and call some of these billionaires and centimillionaires he knows and make promises to them. Building a party is a dirty, low-down business but it must be done.
