25 Trump approves Keystone. Then Dems spent 4 years suing to reverse it, and not getting built while lawsuits dragged on. And now Biden will kill it off for good. The left plays the long game. No loss is ever a loss for them, just a temporary setback. Meanwhile for the right, even the smallest setback is a permanent loss never to be visited again.

71 Anyway, to continue the pointless discussion from previous thread, all day, really, I don't think "they" are scared in the slightest. Why would they be?

Capitol incident was tiny, only happened because Cap Police were idiots. Otherwise, most you have is some yelling and shoving at police lines - not even a Tuesday night in Portland.

The huge crowd that came on Jan. 6 didn't scare anybody. It's just part of the gigantic cognitive disconnect - unprecedented public support for one office-holder by the demos that historically/culturally are least likely to gather, march, protest, etc. - vs. a challenger from the side bursting with people who do little else, who couldn't draw 500 people to save his life. Oh, the second guy received the most votes in history, by a huge margin, "officially".

Fear? Nope. And get back to me by Friday or so, update how "afraid" they seem.

Yes, there has been construction on both sides of the border. Here is a link to the TC website and the page describes what has been completed so far. Pumping stations and pipe has been laid in Canada, preliminary site work and beginning construction on pumping stations completed in three states in the USA> This is why Canada says they will sue if Biden cancels this now

106 I could be missing something but "lawfare" is 97% asymmetric in its impact, so far. Authoritarians and various freaks can shut down huge areas of legit private or economic activity, but I don't know how it can liberate people to exercise their rights, at least I can't think of examples in the economic area.

"Sue and settle", I assume, will be back and running at a WWII 24/7 pace, in the "environmental" area.

The laziness and meandering of the Obama years, a direct reflection of the "leader" and his low capacity, I fear will now be made good (well, bad). And then some. If a candidate can declare on TV he's going to end the oil industry, and win PA, and a slew of other astounding juxtapositions, there's no need to "triangulate". 2009-2010 was mostly wasted time for them. I don't think 2021-22 will be.

Come on you have to give the GOP some credit. Sure they did not repeal OCare after 7 years of campaigning on doing that. And sure spending increased exponentially under their watch. Andthey did nothing about immigration.

But....they made sure every corporate CEO that hates you now pays less tax. And also made sure the CoC got their beloved 21% Corp tax rate. That is what the GOP considers a great success.

112 OK, thought for the day. (If pixy gives me enough room)

I have always been fascinated/annoyed by how people (especially on the Left) think that people in the past were immoral, barbaric, and superstitious.

I think it is vanity and a way to think they are superior. It is also a product of not having older siblings to wack you on the head why you start to feel accomplished, or a God to keep you humble and give your life a real purpose.

But, (and here is the new thought) I think it is also a way to dismiss lessons from the past the they don't like. Sure, socialism never worked in the past,.... but that is because Stalin and Mao were not at smart as JEF, so nothing to learn from their disasters.

Sure, Hitler created a climate of hate, but BLM is better and smarter than Hitler and his troops. etc.

They have to think they are smarter than that past peoples since they keep insisting on repeating their errors and need a reason to believe they will get different results.

There are a lot of private companies involved in this, and I"m sure they will join in. Biden's rationale for canceling a major international project after construction has started is because...he has no reason. Other than Trump signed off on it. I want to see the Democrats from Montana, North and South Dakota and then the rest of the states down to the Mississippi support Biden canceling and blocking this from going through. Donation can dry up to Democrats as fast as they dry up for Republicans. The governors of these states are mostly Republican, I think Kristi Noem will be happy to have her AG join in on an international lawsuit for example.

If you want it, and can get it, do it. My buddies - and I trust the pharmacist especially - says they wish everybody could get them that want them right now. He wishes I could get it, and I don't think I'm at as much risk as some. No, it might not work against the mutated virus, but we won't know for some time. What's weird about this is that it really affects people differently. It's a weird fucking virus. And, we don't know the long-term effects.

My take is, if you want it, get it. There's really nothing to be afraid of except maybe being sick for a day after the second dose. You've got more reasons than most to get it. I took great pains to NOT give it to my mom, and she still got it.

THAT'S when I have objections. What happened to "my body my choice"? As far as I know, with my pharmacist and doctor friends, it's voluntary. One is a pediatric surgeon, one works ICU. Both didn't want to be down for 2+ weeks. One has a family, kids, and that also weighs on his mind. As far as he's concerned, the vaccine is pretty standard stuff.

But if you don't want it, you should not be forced to take it. I'm still on the fence, but I will be easily tipped into the NO camp if they start threatening me with it. It's at that point it's 100% patent bullshit. Your friend isn't risking anybody by not taking it, worse case is she's out for a week or two. Or, she dies. If she's in health care, she's already being tested daily. Yep, 100% bullshit.

189 SFGoth, we may be in somewhat uncharted waters on some of this. But the general problem is that so much federal policy in so many areas is now discretionary, even where law is clear.

A lawsuit to "force" the administration to deport violent felon illegals, for example - how would that work? I'm thinking it won't, at all. DOA. And this kind of thing makes up a large % of important policy areas.

193 I know everyone, and I'll include myself, is really down on the SC for abdicating what I believe to be there duty to resolve a dispute between the states over the election. They refused to even hear it and I get that was a really unbelievable decision.

But if you go to Scotusblog.com and start reading through what they have done since that decision, a lot of the court's recent decisions have been what I would call on the conservative side.

They have overturned lower courts blocking the execution of two different heinous criminals and those two are no longer taxpayer concerns. One was the woman in Florida who kidnapped, strangled, and then surgically removed the pregnant woman's baby from her womb. The baby survived. This animal has not , thanks finally to the SC.

Then this past week, Corey Johnson was put to death on the 14th after requesting to be allowed to recover from Covid 19 before being put to death. SC said , no, and he is now off the rolls. He was convicted for killing seven people in gang related violence.

On Friday, the justices overturned a federal judges opinion he could not green light the execution of Dustin Higgs. Not exactly sure what Higgs did.

251 Economy is almost certain to see short-term strength as suppressed consumer activity is unleashed. Household savings have skyrocketed in the artificial recession. That, plus more money-printing, and ZIRP = boomlet/recovery.

Well, at least in macro terms.

One key thing to watch the next few years is growth in real household income for the bottom 40%, and real wage growth for unskilled/semi-skilled labor. Two things that saw historic gainzzz under Trump, For Reasons, which are very likely to be quite bleak (after taking enormous pounding during lock-downs, construction sector excepted).

Theatres were dying even before COVID. Now that the studios are dying, the old model will never return, even if people stop fearing infection.

What might return is independent smaller operations showing what people might want to see, new or old, and if enough people sign up you get an area to watch it, be it like a living room or a big theatre.

316 Nurse -
When my father was deep into PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy), he was stuck sleeping in a hospital bed in the family room (same house I grew up in). He couldn't traverse stairs anymore due to balance issues. He was really, really hoping I would make it to his 85th birthday. He kept asking my mother whether I would be able and she would say she didn't know. I did fly in and arrived at the house. My mother let me in and I went to see my father. He had gone to the bathroom so I sat down in his beloved recliner next to the bed. He comes out of the bathroom and because PSP wrecks vision (and he became very light sensitive) he hobbled over to the bed and muttered that he wished I had been able to come. He literally could not see me 5' away. I said, "Hi Dad" and he cried with joy - he actually cried. He made it to his 86th, which I was there for too. You'd look at him and not believe he was 86 - more like 70 - let alone within months of dying from a terrible disease. Little things go a long way some time.

* You folks disappoint me. It couldn't be more obvious, at this point. Trump will return within a few months. Did you hear that the National Guard is being deputized as Special Deputy US Marshalls (or something like that)? They're not there to protect ol' Joe from you and me - they're there to do mass arrests. * Even the child-sniffer seems to be catching wind of it. He's acting like the fugitive he is, talking about being inaugurated somewhere other than DC. He's afraid of even entering the city, with Trump's massive militarization going on there. The military isn't going to take orders from an illegal POTUS.
* Trump says he'll broadcast over the EBS on the morning of the 20th (which ought to tell you something right there.) He said that it's going to be a real shocker (I forget the exact phrase).

And it misunderstands the situation pre-Novemeber. A lot of the reason Americans weren't "participating in the governance of our lives" is because those "governments" are already beyond what we can in good conscience support. So actively supporting their function with our efforts is a non-starter.
The whole point of America was that we didn't and were not meant to have "governance of our lives".

398 Lot's of speculation on some sort of Democratic run boom economy...I even see some here also expecting it.

Of course, that would be similar to the Carter boom, or the Obama boom, when the Dems controlled everything and threw trillion of fake cash into it - you know, those socialist inspired booms...

The only 'boom' for any Democratic as President was the short term Clinton boom that was completely controlled and run by Newt Gingrich and the Republicans, and that was more a Tulip Speculation Run Up than anything else...it fell apart pretty quick.

No one is investing or speculating in an economy run by a mental invalid and assisted by Pelosi and Schumer...investable liquid assets will move overseas or in pockets where stability and capitalism still run the show, or be hidden altogether from avarice tax clerks...and any economic policy that makes an ounce of sense will be in short supply come Jan 21st.

419 255 Economy is almost certain to see short-term strength as suppressed consumer activity is unleashed.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 18, 2021 09:04 PM (OTzUX)

rhomboid, I think they are going to manage to put a blanket on the boomlet with re-regulation, tax increases, and increased costs of energy. Commercial real estate is a big problem area too.

Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at January 18, 2021 10:02 PM (BMmaB)

420 In order to get a state legislature to pass a law apportioning electors proportionally in a blue state, first you need to get the wildly leftist blue-state legislature to agree it needs to be done.

And the wildly left blue-state legislature got there largely because of the outsized influence and probably massive fraud in the big blue cities.

See the problem with that plan? Why on earth would they ever let this happen?

Voting. Is. Dead.

I saw it happen in Reston, Va. I was on an advisory staff position under the last effective local Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, the Republican Box Dix. He was great to advise. We did good. Real citizen input and problem solving.

Then he was voted out by a Dem and the change was day to night. I left that position shortly thereafter. He may not have been the best man (Drummed out for sexual harrasment, in a Dem signature move) , but he was good for Reston. The Dem, not so much.

People should check out tinyurl.com/yykzxj9y, which is an interview of Gen McInerny. If you don't come away with the impression that WWIII is going on, the military knows EXACTLY what happened, and isn't about to accept a Commander-in-Chief installed by the main country in the axis against us, I don't know what to tell you.

Remember - there was NO POINT to having the military take over while Trump is still POTUS. If you're discouraged that "nothing has happened, so nothing will", I hear you, but there's actually been LOTS happening, as secretly as possible, or under camoflauge, and the Big Event had to be the 20th.

Posted by: NaCly Dog at January 18, 2021 10:08 PM (u82oZ)

NaCly, I tend to agree with you and rhomboid on that, but I temper it with the slack in aggregate demand that is only going to get worse. The Fed will be pushing on a rope, so velocity of money may slow down to the point where pumping more money into the economy doesn't result in inflation because the economy just basically says, "Meh." This was the story of the inflation I expected with all the QE in 2009. It never showed up.

Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at January 18, 2021 10:12 PM (BMmaB)

429 >>Well, at least in macro terms.

I don't see this at all...the huge national small business loses and subsequent long term unemployment will bubble up pretty quick and the lefties have shown zero ability to manage M1...so liquid asset velocity will dry up. That, coupled with no credit from banks, all this will have to force Fed rates higher or face a financial crisis...an increase in Fed rates and the lag or losses in commercial real estate sales will just make cash sit this one out and molder waiting on something to invest in - which won't come along again until Punchy is long gone.

Welcome back, Jimmy Carter....

434 Yeah, I just cannot imagine that commercial RE is a good place to be in general. The idea that we have to have all the employees or students under the same roof at the same time is dead forever, yet we had a lot of office buildings built with the expectation that tenants were going to do exactly that and financed with cheap loans. Lose some occupancy and the buildings are under water. Wipe out enough equity and you have a real crisis.

Yes, this is, I believe the actual result we will see...and the financial press will do the Obama cover thing for a lousy economy, but there just won't be investable areas that will move things in the right direction, unless that is off shore and overseas somewhere, so not a real benefit to the US...

Agreed, its going to take a good amount of time to absorb the kind of equity losses coming down the pike. That could have been made up by a resurgent small business sector out from the urban areas in fabrication or manufacturing or petroleum, but that's dead now given a Democratic run economy...so its back to trying to make a few schekels off of global financial trades and currency arbitrage - not much their for the office building owner in Pittsburg to thrill them...except arson...maybe look for an uptick in insurance claims...this is where Antifa could help out!
