The Pentagon has authorized hundreds of active-duty troops to support enhanced security measures related to President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration, as local law enforcement continues to track threats of violence in the nation's capital in the days leading up to the ceremony, according to two defense officials.

The 750 active-duty personnel deployed this week include service members with expertise in handling chemical, biological, nuclear, radiological and explosive weapons, as well as explosive ordnance disposal and medical teams skilled in trauma response, said one defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive operations.

There are a bazillion cats out there, needing a home.

No reason to subject yourself to someone else's insanity and virtue signaling to be deemed worthy of taking in a cat.

At my feet right now is a cat who spent the first six years of her life in a shelter. She's rather demanding, yelling at me as I type, saying I'm not giving her my undivided attention. Any shelter that would do anything to prevent that doesn't really give a shit about the animals in their care.

Its one of those classic woke "solutions" that are at least as bad as the problem, but give someone more power so they feel important in the process.

I am not at all sure MLK would not be down with reparations.

93 Again, we don't hate all white people. Yes, we hate and and want to exterminate Whiteness. But that's not the same thing. Yes, we believe that saying "White Lives Matter" is a form of hate speech, but that's only because white lives don't matter.
If you are a non-Person of Color, you can still play an important role in bringing about a glorious future free from the poisonous stain of Whiteness. For example, you can help decolonize Asia, Africa, and the Americas by pressuring whites to leave these continents entirely and return them to the indigenous peoples who are the rightful owners and inhabitants of the land.
Also, you can help Asians and Africans immigrate to Europe where there are no indigenous peoples to worry about. Asia belongs to Asians, Africa belongs to Africans, and Europe belongs to everybody. Isn't it glorious?

I didn't have a problem with the home visit. But the place I got my two most recent cats, the adoption was done by then. They just asked that I commit to the adoption, and that I have a place to isolate the cat, during the initial period of introducing the new animal.

It's a reasonable request. Cats that aren't introduced slowly will have a terrible time with existing cats, if it's not done right.

Yes, I get really lucky with our latest dog. The city animal shelter usually charges about $130 for adoptions but our big guy was so terrified of cages that he ate through the one they put him in and then barked all night. We came in the next morning to meet him and they practically shoved him out the door to live with us as a "foster" until he was legally available for adoption... they did not charge a fee and they threw in a martingale collar and a very nice leash to boot (we had not planned on taking a dog home that day so we did not have either).

If you can stand the flavor (I don't like it), goats give a lot of milk and are easier to care for in a smaller area than a cow. Goats are mostly self-sufficient and are like a dog that doesn't bark, very friendly and fun. Plus most urban areas will allow a goat because of Hispanic influence.

219 Private rescues are notoriously difficult because they want to protect the animals for adoption, but also because honestly, they are into a bit of power trip.

County and other municipal shelters are usually loaded with more pets for adoption that they can handle. I have adopted two dogs from the local shelter easily. There are forms to complete but that's usually about it.
The two dogs that we adopted from private rescues were a bit more complicated. Easier with the larger mixed breed dogs than with small or purebred dogs.

Cats I have adopted from the local Humane Society, the municipal shelter, and a private rescue. All they required were forms to be completed. The latter was easy because we chose the abused middled aged psycho cat that nobody wanted.

I'm in CA, and the guns allowed for sale in this state I could count on my toes and fingers. Which means nothing can be purchased online, or if it can it's on roster and will cost an extra approx $100 FFL fee plus shipping plus $37.19 firearms transfer fee plus 10% CA sales tax. Woo fucking hoo.

I've been buying off-roster, which means an LEO bought it and then sold it - so we get extra middlemen. Yay! Only 2x street price usually. All the above costs as well, minus shipping, but plus gas to drive 1-3 hours to get it.

A discrete vehicle unloading/loading area would have to be set aside inside the warehouse, as no visible arms could be carried by hand into or away from the premises. An event to never be held twice consecutively in the same location.

255 A chicken story: Mrs. Splunge and I moved from California to Arizona recently. I drove with my parrot; she drove with dogs and chickens.

One of the chickens, the smart one, decided that Mrs. Splunge's muscle car was her new nest box. Every day, she waited for us to come out and let her into the car so she could have her egg. She'd run toward the car when she saw us, with a sort of a "I really have to go to the bathroom RIGHT NOW waddle." We didn't have to leave the door open; she could exit by the window.

Alas, this precocious chicken, along with almost all of the others, was killed the other day. I think it was coyotes, but can't be sure. That let me to get a trail cam so I can see what's lurking around at night.

I was told at the store/range that there is defensive ammo and range ammo. The range ammo is somewhat less expensive than defensive ammo?
Posted by: Ladyl at January 18, 2021 07:42 PM (TdMsT)

Ladyl, FMJ, or full metal jacket, is range ammo. Solid bullets that do not expand. Cheaper to make.
Hollow point is defensive ammo. Hollow points expand and make a bigger hole, generally causing more damage.

Hope that helps.
Remanufactured ammo can be either bullet, but the powder used can be cheap and dirty, manufacturing can be all over the board, causing the guns to foul and needing to clean it sooner. And dirty ammo can smell pretty bad, too.
The top 20 or so options on 9mm at ammoseek.com were all no name or remanufactured, even before the Russian steel ammo, which used to be the cheapest.

Yep, when I just bought a bunch I got 1k rounds of quality range ammo, and then a couple of boxes of the premium stuff for the nightstand magazines. The target doesn't care how much it gets ripped up.

BTW, bonhomme pointed to this site which has some very cool charts on some of the most popular home defense ammo to help you decide. Interesting in that one brand doesn't necessarily make the best in all calibers.
luckygunner dot com

Also, when I was seeing some stuff on sale, I went to Youtube to check on the particular rounds, and was glad I did. Almost any specific ammo has some kind of review or comments about it. Unfortunately right now I'm seeing a lot of stuff from East Europe, some is good and some not so much.

That is an unusual Pyrenees. Most of them will adopt and guard any small animals they come across (even when they are guarding, they prefer to scare predators away by barking). Ours has been trying to make friends with our cats for the last year. our 4 pound cat regularly pimp slaps him when he gets too close and he just backs off and lays down pouting.

Always a possibility, but I don't think so. I'm relying on a site I found by searching on "what killed my chicken." There were two bodies with no visible mark on them, and two entirely missing chickens, and no foul odors. Plus, we hear the coyotes howling quite nearby most nights.
