This is near where I grew up. Although the natural bridge itself is nowhere near the scale of the one in the painting, the caverns are very nice.

123 Past 100, so an update on my brother.

They've determined that he's got a severe hiatal hernia along with a significant case of esophagitis, caused by the acid reflux from the hernia.

He had been taking too much Ibuprofen along with some other self medication methods that has screwed up his blood sugar. They're looking at his pancreas now to see what's doing there.

But, it's not cancer, so we're extremely relieved and grateful for all the prayers.

Thank you all VERY much.

130 I like natural bridges, but I actually prefer the artificial kind. Coercing order and building thoroughfares for people - especially when done carefully and with sweeping aesthetic grandeur - is wonderful.

One of my favorite example is the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia. It crosses the ironically-named New River (which I think is the oldest or one of the oldest rivers on the continent). I think West Virginia put it on the reverse of their state quarter:

That's the origin of many natural bridges. You had a river flowing underground, through a cave system, and eventually, most of the roof fell in.

181 Also, when it comes to bridges, one that I can't recommend enough to people is the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you ever have the opportunity, drive the Parkway. It'll be possible to do it end-to-end because of this engineering marvel of a bridge. It isn't huge but it was nearly impossible to build.

The Parkway started as a WPA project in 1925 - but the Linn Cove section was such a challenge (because the Parkway had to follow the natural contour of the land and act as a national part according to its mandate/charter) that it wasn't actually fully finished until they could engineer a solution to Linn Cove. The bridge opened - and the Parkway was completed - in 1983.

223 New-to-me experience in the COVID propaganda. I watched about a half hour of TV this morning just in case the world ended over the weekend. The 'Rona propaganda in my area (Denver) has pivoted to, "we know your exhausted and annoyed, but don't let off the gas. Keep wearing your masks and do as you're told. Comply or you're bad."

It has taken on the quality of a really hard-edged harangue. The "we're all in this together" is on the back burner and "do what you're told or you're evil" is on the front burner.

Biden lies about everything. Even things he doesn't need to lie about.

I hadn't heard this argument before, and my first inclination is that drinking/smoking laws and covid restrictions aren't analogous.

Yes, both are created by progressives to control behavior, but I'm thinking it is more simple control than a subversive move in a much bigger play to limit public discourse.

Limiting public discourse may be a natural outcome, but I don't think they are thinking that deeply about a distant goal with respect to the rules they are implementing.
