At around that same time, my stepfather was making $75/week working in a sawmill. Well above minimum wage, it was. We weren't exactly living a life of luxury, nonetheless.
Inflation only really matters if prices go up without a corresponding increase in wages. It's a godsend for debtors, which most Americans are, or those who hold real property (which, again, many Americans do).
It does suck ass if you're on a fixed-income pension (not indexed for inflaction) or something like that. It also sucks ass if you're a bank sitting on a bunch of 30 year fixed-rate mortgages. Sucks to be them.

Yes, I see them from time to time. But usually, they're for an author I couldn't care less about. Tom Clancy for instance is one that always has a TV spot of some kind. IIRC Steven King used to have them as well ages ago. Since I've cut the cable I rarely see any of these, and I can't recall ever seeing one that had anything that was like a "fictionalized" part with actors or stock footage depicting what the book was about.
