Gun Thread: Final Trump Edition [Weasel]

PDT 011721 scaled.jpg

Howdy, y'all, and welcome to the ol' Sunday Gun Thread! It's time once again to gather 'round and discuss guns, gun stuff, and shooting. I have to admit I'm more than a little sad at the thought this will be the last Gun Thread with our beloved President Trump at the helm. What will next week bring us? How soon will it take the assault on our Second Amendment rights to begin? I have to assume it will not be pleasant, nor long in the making. This being the hand we were dealt, however, we're just going to have to figure out ways to make the best of it and to continue doing the things that we like to do under a much different set of circumstances. All is not lost. There are a lot of guns and gun owners in this country, and I suspect few are willing to just accept the new rules, whatever they happen to be.

With that, let's head below and see what we have this week, shall we?

I had a few things to say last week which generated a lot of response both in the comments and at the new Gun Thread email address. Most of it was positive, which is always nice, and virtually all of it was constructive, which I really do appreciate. Truth is, I sort of rely on those who disagree with what I write to keep me on my toes. Anyhow, a number of you took issue with my suggesting consideration be given to adopting a "Gray Man" strategy, which left me sort of scratching my head and prompted me to go back and look at what I'd written. Although I said I was in no way suggesting anyone abandon their beliefs, it appears a few of you interpreted my comments as suggesting exactly that, or at a minimum advocating not advancing our cause. Nothing could be further from the truth. The point I was making, or at least trying to make, was simply to be smart about the things you say and how you conduct yourselves both online and publicly in the real world, especially now. Big Brother really is watching you.

******

First up, I suppose you have heard the National Rifle Association has declared Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, in a stated effort to reorganize themselves out of being a New York Corporation, and into being a Texas Corporation, among other things. Not having looked at their balance sheet, I have no idea what their financial health is, but absolutely understand the desire to get the hell out of New York State and away from it's hostile AG and regulatory environment.

I have been an NRA Life Member for years and have to wonder if it's just simply become too large and bureaucratic in its current form. I suppose it can't hurt to have them around, but I am no longer as big a supporter as I once was. That may be unfair, but when their primary function appears to be fundraising and trinket distribution, it's hard for me to take them too seriously. The Competition Division does good work and I'm sure some good work also goes on in their lobbying effort, but with society becoming increasingly polarized on the gun issue, I can't help but wonder how useful that really is anymore. Instead, I do support my state level NRA affiliate organization, and groups like Gun Owners of America who seem to represent a good alternative to the NRA.

What do you all think? Am I full of shit?

******

Next up, you all certainly remember our pal and delightful 'ette screaming in digital who recently became a gun owner and dangerous radicalized gun nut! I thought it'd be nice to hear her thoughts on the process of going from gun neutral to gun ownership and have it serve as a guide for others. Here's what she has to tell us.

I was afraid of guns most of my life and had virtually no experience or knowledge as of election day. I finally decided to buy a gun because I didn't want to be completely without physical defenses and I'm not sure how much longer we'll be able to buy guns. I procrastinated for a long time because the process felt overwhelming. But I knew one thing from lurking here and gun owners I know: most shooters LOVE to help beginners. All I needed was the courage (or, more accurately, to get fed up enough, which is a reasonable substitute for courage) to walk into a store and ask.

I asked a friend who had prior experience to go along and help me ask the right questions. I initially thought I should buy a rifle, since it had felt more comfortable to me the ONE TIME I'd been shooting. I live in Wyoming. I didn't research gun buying laws before going to the store. We went to the Sportsman's Warehouse that recently opened in our town. A very knowledgeable young man showed me rifles in my price range that are easy for beginners and patiently answered all my questions. I was about to choose a pistol caliber carbine when he encouraged me to hold off and do more research. I asked if there was a range nearby that offered rentals, and he recommended a range in Casper that also offers training. Finally he recommended that we both get pepper spray, and we did, but I left without a gun.

My friend called the range that day. We took a women's basic pistol class a week later. After training, I reconsidered a handgun. I know that a pistol isn't necessarily the best choice for home defense, but this may be the only firearm I can ever afford to buy. I don't plan to carry until I've had more practice and training, but I wanted something I could concealed carry.

Now... which pistol to choose? I'd like to tell you I did exhaustive research, but I didn't. I'm a librarian; I like searching and sorting through lots of information, but considering my ignorance in this field, I deliberately kept it simple to avoid decision paralysis.

I searched phrases like "best pistols for beginners" and "best pistols for small hands." I read several articles reviewing various pistols and cross-referenced against items in stock according to the store's website. I wanted to stay close to $500 for the gun, knowing I'd also need ammo (and other accoutrements). I found this article from Pew Pew Tactical especially helpful.

The Glock 19 (and 17) were highly recommended, but not in stock at my store. The Sig Sauer P320 was also mentioned in several places. I started following this trail and found the Sig P365, in stock for $500. Reviewers praised it as a great daily carry, easy for beginners, not a lot of recoil, accurate and reliable. I had a couple other models in mind in case it wasn't available or I didn't like the feel. The P365 was available when I got to the store, and the staff highly recommended it. I handled several different models, but selected the P365. I know I should shoot the actual model before buying, but the closest range that offers rentals is 2 hours away, and I felt like I'd waited too long already.

Making the purchase was easy. I had to show ID and complete a form, but nothing unexpected, aside from the question about being a "mental defective... I'm a Moron(ette), does that count? There's no waiting period in Wyoming. I walked out that day with my pistol.

Sometimes I wonder if this isn't a symbolic and meaningless exercise on my part. How can a mousy, middle-aged, (mostly) harmless gal with a tiny pistol be of any use if the SHTF or even to defend myself? Honestly, I don't know. Ultimately I must remember my refuge, strength and hope is in the Lord and this is a spiritual battle. I pray I can learn to stand firm against evil however I'm called to do so.

And this, folks, is how that is done. If any of you are considering buying a gun for the first time, this is the script to follow. Yes, it's great to try before you buy but that's not always possible, and I'm of the opinion we sometimes overthink this whole thing a little bit, anyway. Do your research, take an introductory class, talk to gun owners you know, and find a gun shop where the staff takes the time to answer questions. Shoot the same type gun if you can, but if you cannot it's not the end of the world. The important thing is arming yourself if that is what you want to do.

I bigly huge thank you to screaming in digital for taking the time to send this in, and again, welcome to gun ownership and the Gun Thread!

Next up we have a great submission from our pal No Nic Given. Weasel ain't no engineer, and this sounds engineerish as the dickens, but at the same time very interesting.

Back when Polymer 80 released their P80 in (I think 2015) I was one of the first to sign up to build a G17. I enjoyed shooting it and managed to get probably 500-750 rounds through the first body before I broke the back rails which were polymer at the time. Fast forward to last year and I have now built a gaggle of P80 lowers into fully functional Glock clones none of which I would hesitate to EDC. In fact, in the colder days this year I'm as likely to pick up my G19 clone as I am my Sig P365.

On to the matter at hand. About six months ago, my son saved up and bought a 3D Printer with my facilitation and proceeded to print about half dozen things with it and then promptly stuck it in the back of his closet. Both he and I forgot about it. I think I printed one thing and it was a beer opener with a counter on it for the dock at the lake.

In October of this year I was itching to get a Strike Industries P80 frame because I thought they looked sweet (and really, can one ever have too many unregistered pistols?) and while goofing around looking for parts which are increasingly difficult to come by, I came across the printed pistol phenomenon.

Now, I'm an engineer by education so I was skeptical but still curious so I commandeered the printer, loaded it up and printed my first G17 lower. It made it about fifty 9mm rounds before it failed but I noticed it failed in a fairly predictable spot right where the trigger guard connected to the body just above the mag release.

Long story short, my problem was with both the materials I was using as well as the print orientation I chose.

For the past three months I've printed about a dozen guns with only a few failures at the front end. The three shown here are all G19 copies from a few different files easily found on the Internet. The yellow (which will shortly be embossed with the Gadsen Snek and "Don't Tread on Me") just had its 1000th (or so) round put through it with hardly a mar or an overly elongated pin hole on it. I added the Spartan helmet on the magwell in Fusion360. I'm tickled to pieces at how well it has held up! The other two have had 300-500 rounds each put through them again, with limited wear. The red one has the most visible signs of use and I blame that one on the material (PETG).

3D Printed Frames 011721 scaled.jpg

I'm printing with a Creality Ender 3 that my son bought off the Bay for about $150 and using a variety of filament (PLA, Carbon Infused Nylon, PETG) but my favorite is eSun's PLA+. It's very workable and seems to avoid the brittle factor I find in standard PLA. I'm bending or milling my own rails out of aluminum depending on the frame and mostly using stock Glock OEM lower parts. The upper parts are all over the map in terms of vendors. I think the yellow gun is 'mostly' Glock OEM internals with an aftermarket Lonewolf trigger.

So far I've printed G17's and G19's but am about to tackle an AR and a CZ EVO Scorpion next.

Would I trust these guns in a defensive gun use? Yes. If I had to.

Heck, I'm the one who put them together and really haven't had issues since I got my 'additive manufacturing' process dialed in more than I do on any OEM striker fired guns I own. But now I have the means and capability to defend my loved ones and property that can never be denied me. That's a pretty cool feeling.

I'm having a blast, literally and figuratively, and building my own guns has caused me to get into casting my own bullets and reloading more than I ever did before. I went to Wal Mart the other day for an oil change and the guy in the tire shop gave me about 50 lbs of assorted wheel weights when I asked him if he would give me any. Now if he only had some small pistol primers I'm down to 10,000. But, maybe this is another post for the future, I am going to try my hand at making my own primer powder. I've probably saved 10,000 caps and anvils.

Any moron who wants to reach out to me can and I'll point them in the right direction assuming it's legal in their local jurisdiction.

I must admit to knowing next to nothing about the 3D printing process, so, like I said, very interesting! Aren't hobbies fun? Just think of all the useful objects one could make! From what I gather, it's been legal to manufacture your own firearms for years, but there are still rules that can get you into big trouble if not followed, so make sure you're not printing yourself a problem.

What do you all think? Any other gunsmiths out there? If you're interested in learning more, NNG has generously offered to help. Just drop me an email with FORWARD TO NNG on the subject line and I will pass your message along to them.

Next up, our pal and COB extraordinaire MisHum sends us the following article from The National Interest.

Next up we have a note from our pal Catch Thirty-Thr33 who shares another shooting analysis system. This one is certainly different from the rest and even works with live fire.

Mantis System pic scaled.jpg

I listen to a radio show out of Lubbock called "Pratt on Texas", which mostly focuses on Texas politics. But the host, Robert Pratt, loves his guns. He even has a feature called the "anti-wimp update" which features instances of gun usage in the name of self defense. Anyways, he got on the show yesterday raving about something called Mantis. I looked into this and though I cannot afford this just yet, the concept looks very intriguing to say the least. You attach a tracking device to your gun and download the app, and get them both in communication with each other via Bluetooth. From there, depending on which model you get, you can use it for dry firing, live firing, and there is even a model available for use on shotguns. I figure using every single advantage to attain proficiency is necessary, and things like this can only help.

Anyone have one of the several Mantis systems and care to share their thoughts?

******

Some time ago our pal and delightful 'ette lin-duh sent in this handgun video and I think it's a good one, so for those of you who missed it before, here 'tis again.

******

Here's a video from or pals at Brownells on long-term storage bags to protect firearms and other accessories.

The prices aren't great but they're not outrageous, either. There are also heavy food grade vacuum seal bags widely available in a variety of sizes that would be a good option for things you might want to put away for some time.

Here's a guy who had the same idea.

Anyone have thoughts on the use of the vapor tabs versus vacuum sealing? Any other helpful home storage solutions?

Weasel, in regards to the "Gray Man" strategy, I think that is something like myself can use here in the Peoples Republic of New York City. 28 Gray Man Strategy .... just blend in. I had to search for what it meant.

I was a little slow in getting my pump shotgun and MP-15 ... should have both in hand this week. I'm OK with mentioning it, because surely NSA and the rest know what I buy on my credit card. And voicing it should be done "loud and proud" by millions. But I think the "go into hiding" approach is probably not helpful. Some things should be secret, or held close to the vest ...

Certainly any talk of who to attack ... anything illegal ... well, that day may come, but no point talking like that here. "We" are still talking in the open about what Real Americans are doing in our Real Life of Liberty. ... imo the DC crowd is out of touch, but there are way too many "Karens" infiltrating the normies ... that is for sure.

38 Man, What a depressing headline! Wife and I are finally taking the plunge and purchasing our first home/personal defense semi-auto (or gun of any type). Newbie but have done lot of research. Inventory and prices are crazy and its definitely a seller's market. Many of the models I'd like aren't in the budget, especially when you consider ammo, lessons, and range fees. The ones I'm going to make my final choice from are:

Taurus G3 (possibly the G3c or G2c), EAA Girsan MC23SA, SDS Zirgana PX-9
Canik TP Models (though they suddenly shot through roof pricewise), Ruger Security 9

Also on the bubble:
Stoeger STR9, Sar-9, S&W SD9VE

Throwing myself on the knowledge and experience of the horde. Seems like opinions on "cheap" (inexpensive) semi-automatics vary wildly. Thanks, all.

Yeah that seems like a long time to me but one thing to know is that bluing is a job that takes a lot of set up and a 'smith would prefer to have several pieces prepped and ready to go to make the most of it. Also, one thing I have learned never to say to a 'smith or a mechanic is "Nah, I'm not in any hurry" because they'll surely take you at your word.

1. NRA - Concur with the trinkets and things comments. If they spent half the $$ on doing sh1t, as opposed to fundraising, I might be more inclined to re-join. But quit spamming me. also, bankruptcy in NY allows them to reincorporate in TX and avoid the NY AG assault, I think

2. I've done several Poly 80 Lowers for ARs I like them, but I prefer the 80% Arms jig. They have a new one out. I'm still using the v2

I'd like to thank and shout out to Jim Sunk New Dawn for introducing me to the term "Irish Democracy." I've known for many years about Irish Diplomacy, which is the ability to tell someone to go to hell and have them look forward to the trip.

Makes me want to get the Taurus PT-111 fixed. Somehow I screwed it up putting it back together after cleaning.

48 Mrs Old Blue gifted me a Springfield Armory 1911 .45 acp after I got out of the hospital with my cancer surgery. I love the gun, but unlike any of my other pistols, I tend to shoot low and left with it. With my age and arthritis, I don't know if it's more gun than I can handle. I can't engage the thumb safety with my right hand, I have to use my left hand to engage it.

Agreed, and if you want to get a car restored, same thing applies.
A buddy wanted to restore a '77 Celica, actually a rare car. The 6 month job turned out to be 2 years. And the restorer did some shoddy work in some places. I did warn him not to go with just the lowest price quote, but he didn't listen to me.

52 Made things go bang but had lots of troubles. First the AR 15 was in single shot mode. I think I may have broken it by putting on a new rear plate with sling rings. Because the buffer seems to be not working well, it's not extracting most times and when it does it's not picking the next round off the mag. So I think the buffer spring is too tight or binding. Sadz.

This week was Carcano week. Don't laugh!

I zeroed my M41 and my M91 Cavalry carbine out to 25 then 100 yards. I use a Williams Gun Sight Company universal front sight tool to push the front sight blade to get the correct windage then I have to bury the front sight post in the v-notch to get the elevation down as the battle sights are set at 200 meters.

The Carcano is an old design but a nice shooter with light recoil. Now that I got them zeroed I will see what they can hit out to 600 yards.

Its a cowboy load - 247 grain at 750 fps but thats pretty similar to the common loading for .455 Webley which was considered rather effective. For a Charter Bulldog .44 it would do alright. 72 Hey y'all. We used the Mantis app in my basic pistol class for both dry fire and live fire practice. It was sort of cool to get a "score" and immediate feedback on what I might be doing wrong. As a noob, I didn't understand most of the feedback, and in a class setting it was difficult for me to evaluate the app. I noticed that it seemed to give my friend low to average scores even though her actual accuracy in live firing was pretty good. I also can't justify the cost right now. I'd be more willing to pay knowledgeable humans to train, observe and correct me in the stage I'm at right now.

79 Quick recommendation for screaming in digital or anyone else who bought or is buying a first firearm for defense: try to get into your local CCW class, if possible. For one, you should have it in case you need it. But even if the state's side of the paperwork is backed up six months, you really want to hear from the instructors (at the one I took, they had a defense attorney come in for a whole presentation) about when you can and can't use deadly force. Another good resource is Andrew Branca's Law of Self Defense, which will cover your state and others.

Yes, a suitably motivated prosecutor can still choose to make an example of you, but you don't have to make their job any easier, if you can help it.

The biggest one being DO NOT sell them or give them away to ANYONE.

The second biggest being "Don't pretend to not sell them by letting someone else merely push the button on your computer that makes it print."

To alleviate some of my financial stress, I'm selling a scope.

For sale: Trijicon Accupoint 5-20x50 with Trijicon QD mount. It was on my AR for about fifty rounds, and is just too much scope for the weapon.

Asking $1,000.

126 The Italians won some international service rifle competitions with the '91 rifle. A lot of gripes about Carcano inaccuracy are rooted in really piss poor to miserable quality control in their ammunition, even peace time stuff. Wartime would have serious discrepancies within lot numbers.

127 I know a couple of guys who are into the 3D printing, I sort of wish I'd stayed on top of the technology, but then again - that's one less thing to be spending thousands of dollars on. I do know some knife makers with CNC machinery - it would be tempting to spit out lowers and have them do the rest of the stuff - custom Glocks would be tight!

I just got back inside from the garage - replaced the grip and 2 safety levers on my CZ Scorpion. Once I play with it a bit more I think I'll have an idea of what I do/don't want to switch. The safety levers were obvious - I can't believe that somebody said "that'll work" or I guess really "to bude fungovat". The grip I'm less sure on, but the angle of the original did seem a bit odd. Anybody have anything they've found that floats their boat to stick on the Scorpion?

If there is a TXMoMe this year I am planning on driving there with my toys. 129 ... but with society becoming increasingly polarized on the gun issue, I can't help but wonder how useful that really is anymore. Instead, I do support my state level NRA affiliate organization, and groups like Gun Owners of America who seem to represent a good alternative to the NRA.

What do you all think? Am I full of shit?

I think you're right on. GOA is the best of the national organizations. However, your state-level organization is the one to support, IMHO. Politicians listen to two things, 1) money, and 2) the voters an organization can deliver.

153 As most (all?) of the "action" WRT 2A will likely be in the courts, Second Amendment Foundation is another gun-related outfit to consider. I think that's all they do - legal gun stuff.

I no longer expect a bucket of water, poured out, to run downhill in this country, given the last year or two, but on paper, the stage is set for big victories on the 2A. I mean the SCOTUS personnel, Heller in place, etc.

Of course it's absurdly illustrative of the problems with the country's institutions that the simplest part of the constitution has not only been routinely ignored whenever some felt like it, but that when it is, finally, and only partially and occasionally affirmed, it's a "victory".

But.

As for the 1911, it is a revered sidearm that is now well over a 100 years old. Sure their are newer designs but nothing compares to a 1911 in the auto gun arena. Ok, maybe a Browning Hi Power but I know we are a niche cult. We are right but no way does it have the allure of the 1911.

President Trump did not do everything right, just like none of his

but broader issues. No one has been treated the way Trump has been
treated by so many and yes, I very much do study history.

I took it apart to get intimate this afternoon. Cleaned, oiled, inspected. Put back together and is now mine.

Posted by: nurse ratched at January 17, 2021 08:00 PM (U2p+3)

190 That said, I did get to the range yesterday. Finally.

I sighted in my TLR-8 laser. It is attached to one of my car guns, a FNP-45. The damn thing needs two hands to turn it on, so not perfect. That said, the laser works. Night tight groups. The single action trigger pull of the FNP is nice and light.

I test fired my CZ 75 and...after firing 3 rounds, the fucking firing pin shot out the back. The fucking design flaw of the CZ 75, the firing pin retaining pin either broke or worked its way out. So now I have to wait to get that replaced. Sheesh. Should maybe have spent the extra $300 and just bought a new one. But...I'm foolishly cheap about some stuff. Just like me stubbornly refusing to buy 9mm target ammo for $.79 a round.

The good news, I have more guns. I shot my G19 and XD45, both worked great when I remembered to pull the trigger straight back instead of 'clenching', which makes my groups go down and right.

Interestingly, the faster I go, the more accurate I am. When I don't have time to over-think things, muscle memory takes over.

A good day at the range, all things considered.

Pretty damn awesome you built that. They were really good rifles and the 6.5mm is a great round. The rifle itself was a little awkward as you noted in the scope mount. But overall it was a pretty accurate rifle.

Cool....I did not know that. What is your opinion on Lee's ability to shoot like they say he did on that day in Dallas?

I always find my Carcanos have issues feeding with the rounds porpoising or not rising depending on the clip if I do not pay attention when working the bolt.

Then sure, why not? I have a UPS mailbox, just as a place to have my mail forwarded before I knew where I was living. Price wasn't too bad. Getting it from a remote location was a pain (never had to have my passport copies notarized before), but in person, probably no big deal.

197 Comments on the storage videos:

First, other than the second guy eventually using Seal-A-Meal bags, the OD mylar bag he uses in the beginning isn't likely any different from the Brownell's one. It's mylar, which is long-term moisture resistant.

Also, you can do the vacuum thing with most any bag. (It's obviously easier with a more flexible material.) People been using that technique to shrink and store their winter blankets and such for a very long time.

My one concern is getting plastic residue on the weapon. I know it's probably not a big deal, and it's just my bad experience with stuff sitting somewhere crappy for a long time and being ruined because it was ignored. But, I would think putting a gun sock over a long gun or wrapping a pistol in a silicon cloth would be good additions to the methods presented. Just in case.

200 one last thing about the gray man issue as you call it. I know it is not easy and I don't always follow my own advice. But I don't see how it can any longer be more clear that traditional patriots need to live among themselves. You don't see liberals hiding their views in small towns in red states. I Know this because I have seen it. But conservatives have to walk on egg shells and down right give up free speech for the honor to live in a blue city.

I know some will never do it, and they do have reasons. But I don't see how it can be more clear if you want to feel free, move.

201 I'm in a fairly static posture as to most practice and routine shooting. I've long been blessed with a seeming non-fungible skill and accomplishment plane at arms. I can "not shoot" for years, and pick it right back up where I left it.

What I am focusing on right now, is an utter overhaul of the gun safe, it's contents down to the last scrap of wood or steel, and every ancillary bit also therein. Next comes the workbench, ammo storage and every other aspect of the craft I can think to include into the process. Good self advice, I need my shit squared away and accounted for. Bit of it is "in case I need it quickly". The rest is to prioritize other decisions as to ongoing care, maintenance and preservation of all that.

208 Hairyback guy,

The original 91 Carcano Fusil (long rifle) is what the Italian rifle team used if I recall correctly. The original design (not the carbines nor the later 41) used something called a gain twist barrel where the twist starts out slower at the breech end and then becomes more pronounced at the bore. It was done to prolong barrel life and make them more accurate.

The desperate need for carbines in Italy resulted in many long rifle barrels simply being chopped which makes the twist rates way to slow for certain model carbines but believe the 91/24 for example are that way. That makes them very inaccurate btw.

Used to remember all the stuff but it is out there on the internet or in a guy that recently published a Carcano tome on all things Carcano.

215 I highly recommend the book The Cornered Cat by Kathy Jackson who is a CCW instructor and editor of CC magazine for any new shooter/pistol owner and especially for females. Kathy delves into all the typical subjects of pistol ownership and cc carry but also spends a lot of time in the beginning helping readers mentally decide if they can carry and moreover kill someone in self defense. That question MUST be answered in a persons mind before they choose to become armed. And there are people who cannot make that mental choice and there is no shame in that. Kathy does not make that judgment rather she goes through the moral and religious questions one needs to ask in order to personally accept the yes or no answer to using lethal force. The quote from screaming in digital of not being sure if this is just a symbolic gesture on her part concerns me. SID needs to know before she ever picks up a gun that she is firm in her conviction of using based on training and a thorough understanding of the law.

229 I've never seen it in a set of canned recommendations, but I DO have tiny hands, I'm not a sharpshooter or firearms enthusiast, and far and away the *nicest* fit for my hands, with the least recoil, was a Miroku Liberty Chief .38 special police revolver.

Just hanging out with friends and family and whatnot, I've shot a half-dozen or so other handguns, and none of them compared. The thing is just a lovely piece of engineering. I clearly remember going back and forth between that and a S&W .38, and... ouch! I don't think they make them anymore, but last I checked they weren't rare and expensive collector items, so they're great if you can find one.

230 Regarding storage, brownells sell bags like the military does but you can also get anti corrosive bags in bulk from some Amazon sellers. The only difference is that these do not have the ziplock type seal on the end so you need to either tape the ends with something like aluminum hvac tape, or some other vapor resistant tape. For good measure, get RIG grease and apply inside and outside of all metal after thoroughly cleaning the firearm. It will need to be removed from the bore and action though before firing but it will not harden up like cosmolene. There is also zerust capsules that can be used.

I did this complicated setup for someone who had a safe that used some of that toxic Chinese drywall that emits acid. The stuff was banned from the US and low and behold started showing in in some firearm safes of a certain vintage as liners.

The guy was either going to have to tear out the liner and replace (long run plan) or go to some sort of secure storage. The 'temporary' solution has lasted two plus years with no sign of rust at all but not so for the sacrificial piece of angle iron in the safe.

They need to reorganize, get rid of a lot of DC BS'ers and try to win the people back. There is no way we can not have an NRA.

Off-hand was terrible, but, no surprise there, as I'm well aware of the fact I'm not a good shooter off-hand, with a rifle.

Then, we went "mad minute" prone and I got off one lousy shot after the two sighter shots. All of a sudden, my target disappeared and I couldn't be sure I was shooting at the correct target, so, held fire. I couldn't figure out what had happened, until I realized I was prone, in full sunlight, and my glasses had darkened to the point I was unable to use my aperture sights. D'oh!

I switched to clear shooting glasses, and, for the slow fire prone, shot reasonably well. Lesson learned, the hard way!

242 Hairyback guy,
Info is now at carcano.org. Mine was one of the last long rifles made in the 1930's, had to do a major cleanup on it.

BTW, the Carcano is not a true 6.5 which is where a lot of folks get into trouble with accuracy. 6.5 Swede for example is .264 for bullet diameter, the Carcano is .268.

If you can still get it, Hornady made some special ammo for Grafs and Sons using the correct bullet diameter. You can also cast your own and if you use a profile similar to the Swede or the original Carcano, long heavy bullets, you should get some splendid accuracy. If I recall right, at one time, Prvi used .264 bullets for their Carcano ammo, you will need to check.

nothing wrong with that, it depends on the state. I make it a point to not get pulled over but i think i told them at least once. We are not required to do so and either way, it didn't matter. The thing about CCW is you get more comfortable with it over time. I remember when it was new and something I thought about a lot, but that was so long ago. Now, I wouldn't leave sans CCW anymore than I would leave home without my billfold.

254 On Wednesday, consumed democracy will return a socialist regime. All hail the new incompetence! (h/t, Slayer) So the unfortunate thing is that this hobby will become heavily politicized by people who are desperate to pick and choose the hobbies of others. With this in mind, I'll be looking to support organizations that support my right to be left alone. TSRA is at the top of the list as they are a local organization and do keep in mind, all my TX friends, the Legislature has begun its biannual session in the past week.

Oh, how I hate the poking of politics into my good time, but this is the world we live in, unfortunately.

261 235 The NRA dates from the aftermath of the Civil War which is why it is incorporated in NY. The bankruptcy is to do two things, one is to remove the ability of the NY AG from removing the NRA's charter and the second is that there is a nasty legal fight between the NRA and its former ad agency. In part, the internal fight was between Wayne and a majority of the board members on one side and the newer folks, clustered around Ollie North, and the talent on NRA-TV. The ad agency came up with the idea of NRA-TV as magazines were just not that appealing to newer generation of gun owners.

So part of it was a policy fight and when the crunch in money came, NRA-TV was sucking a lot of the resources and anti-gunners were hammering the NRA by attacking advertisers in the American Rifleman and other places. Same as Fox, and so on. That led to NRA breaking with the ad agency and ending NRA-TV which led to an attempt to get Wayne out. The majority of the board sided with Wayne.

262 185 I wonder if they're packaging decent CAD software with the things now? I know a few knife designers who do the production CNC knives do their prototypes that way first, and can work out minor kinks before doing in steel/Ti.

I'm not aware of any printer companies that ship CAD software, what they ship is print-prep software that takes in a 3D geometry file and turns it into instructions for the printer. Some of them do bundle a 'free trial' of Autodesk's web based Fusion 360, but I doubt I have to tell this crowd why doing sensitive things on a major tech corporation's cloud service is a really bad idea.

The Experimental Aircraft Association offers non-commercial Solidworks to its members, and that's about the best deal you'll get on that sort of thing. I don't care for software rental one bit, but the simple fact is that you're getting a $4,000 CAD package for $40 per year. And it's the EAA so if you're into airplanes there's other worthy membership perks to go with it.

263 I worked in moisture protection films at one time, but all I can say is that the an aluminized bag is much much better than a clear one.

Water goes through plastic like shit through a goose.

actually, let me say a bit more - I think vacuum sealing is a mistake, and adds little (the vacuum does protect from O2 in the bag, but that it not the problem The problem is the H2O, and that is mostly getting in through the bag. I would use an aluminized ziplock bag, but not under vacuum. And I would toss in some desiccant. The airspace in the bag makes sure there are no areas with higher concentration of water which does not get to the desiccant. Or throw in a VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor - vapor tab) or even both.

The strategy is to limit how much air or moisture can get into the enclosure, and then absorb that with a desiccant.

This applies for tools, too. Keep you tool box closed at all times. And use decent boxes which have a good seal.

265 Not all of the Carcano's featured the cut down barrel. In 1924 when the new 1891 was released there were some barrels that I believe used the shortened/adjusted gain twist rifling. At least I had read that at one time. I know most of the major changes didn't come until circa 1938 (Beretta models, etc)but to me they simply ruined the original design which was the best. It was really a greatly improved Gewehr 88 with a milled bolt head, etc that really improved overall reliability. The 6.5 also shoot extremely flat and is a great round.

The two times I got stopped, one was in Houston, TX and I had just left a bar and grill after eating dinner and drinking 3 beers. Got the blue light right after I made the turn for the road my hotel was on. Pulled into a parking lot, shut off my vehicle and put both hands on the steering wheel until the sheriff's deputy got to the window, after which I notified him I was carrying and had a permit.

He asked me where it was at and I said console, gave him my license and SC permit, trying all the while not to breath in his direction. He asked if I was in town for business or pleasure and I told him business and I'd been ten weeks on the road and that my hotel was right down the block. After the officer thought about it for a couple of minutes, he handed me my stuff back and told me to get my headlight fixed.

288 The NRA declared bankruptcy. That is not the same as being colloquially bankrupt. That means it has determined that its potential present and future liabilities exceed its ability to pay or some such like that. Declaring (well, filing) "BK" also stays all on-going litigation anywhere ("automatic stay") and requires adverse actions to be tried in the bankruptcy court or the BK judge must grant relief from the stay. This was a smart move by the NRA regardless of how much $ it has. Why the hell it is still in NY after all these years..., oh wait, Wayne LaPierre.

Posted by: SFGoth at January 17, 2021 08:26 PM (KAi1n)

289 244 GWB, it is actually quite accurate and you would find a similar style bullet in the original issued ammo for the Swede 1896 Mauser (and other Mannlicher type ammo). Take a look at our Krag and the original Springfield .30-03 round. Same look.

Spitzer bullets first came from the French with their 8mm Lebel load, and then copied by the Germans in 1905 I believe along with the Germans changing the bullet diameter from .318 (in the older GEW88 and Mauser 98's) to the .323 8x57 Mauser as it is currently.

If you ever mess around with cast bullets, the best for old military surplus are generally long and heavy. They carry a wallop at the other end, proceed slowly enough to fully seal and engrave with the rifling, and minimize lead fouling. Some apparently "worn out" barrels with worn rifling can shoot quite accurately with cast bullets of this type.

301 blake, assume that was with the M1?

Last range duty day I shot just one mag (5 rounds) with a Mosin off-hand, using a sling of course, and was happy to get 3 of the 5 into the black @100 yds. Other two were on the paper, not far off. Soviet surplus ammo, iron sights.

In the action rifle matches a few years back when I used a Mosin, I'd rarely need more than 3 shots to hit the 200-yd target (a not very generous steel tube painted white, or a not very large plate), kneeling, or supporting the rifle on an object/edge. Some of the guys with those funny black plastic rifle things with big telescopes or whatever they are on top would be a bit taken aback.

With the M1, I just empty the clip at that target, it's fun, and I'm sure I'm scaring or wounding it, at least (nice cloud of dust, too).

Since I moved to the Panhandle I have been stopped about once or twice a year, especially by overzealous DPS troopers. (They are all looking for drugs coming down from CO. They love busting people for pot here. If you drive up here with out of state tags, don't be surprised if DPS follows you around when driving around the Panhandle, looking for a reason to pull you over.) I have found that once they see your CHL/LTC, that takes out a line of questioning. (No TX cop is going to be dumb enough to ask if you have a warrant - how can you with a LTC? The LTC says you are a Boy Scout - especially given the legal anal rectal exam DPS will give you for applying for one.)
I must have been pulled over a dozen times up here since I moved here, and only once did I get a ticket.

If you're directly behind the muzzle, the noise isn't as bad as being off to one side.

That said, one should always wear hearing protection.

Side note: Whenever I've run the timer for a guy shooting a rifle that has a muzzle break, I always try to stand directly behind, otherwise, even with hearing protection, the noise is almost overwhelming.

319 Do you all wear hearing protection when you do your target practice?

Without fail. Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and cumulative. I remember as a pre-29-something that we would have scoffed at the wusses wearing plugs or muffs at the range. We were wrong.

322 I've had one field sobriety test in my life. (I was as sober as I could be after 2 beers and 1 scotch in 4 hours but I made a California stop going up the hill to buy a salad from Safeway at 1:00 a.m.) Cop tells me it's a test of my ability to drive (his words). Stand up straight, arms at my side, eyes closed. In my head keep track of 60 seconds. When time is up, say time. Cop had a stop watch. At 57 it felt like I was a bit ahead so I slowed my count, 58, 59, time. I opened my eyes as I said "time" and saw him hit the stop button on his stopwatch. His response was priceless. "On the nose." ("Your honor, the officer said he was testing my ability to drive and it was perfect.") So he let me go with a warning to make sure I stopped completely on the way down. I did but he wasn't around.

324 301 rhomboid, if you shot that well with a bone stock Mosin, you would love what the Finns did with them. The Finns even tinkered with the original Mosin sights and made the rear slot somewhat adjustable for windage. The later 28/30 and subsequent Finn Mosins use the same excellent sights to more closely resemble Swiss K31 sights than Russian Mosins.

Posted by: whig at January 17, 2021 08:34 PM (pO7gM)

325 blake a K31 is usually a much finer platform than a Mosin (an unmodified one), I'd expect much more accurate. And the surplus ammo. Rifle and ammo are fine for what they were built for, which isn't target competitions.

I did "accurize" a Mosin once, the historically accurate way, which involves wrapping a small band of oil-soaked felt around the barrel up near the front barrel band. Think the felt was too thick, or I didn't do it right, didn't seem to make much of a difference. Called a "salka".

There are many places that won't allow CCW in their buildings. Life Time Fitness is one of those that will eject a member for bringing in a firearm.

The side effect is, those who have gun or hunting stickers on their cars get broken in and their guns stolen.

It happens a lot and car break-ins, in an increasing number of jurisdictions is no longer an event that police will respond to. So just having the sticker is an invitation to broken windows.

Have a nice road bike (bicycle) hanging in the garage, keep that totally covered up as well. It's all about not being a target for burglars, to me. Nothing to do with anti-gun mania - though that is now added to the list, as I have lost confidence in society generally.

Doesn't matter if the ammo is 22 shorts. Black powder is not as concussive sounding but it can still cause damage.

Yeah, in emergencies you do what you have to. But I keep 38 specials in the 357 home defense guns. If you think 38 specials are loud, especially in an enclosed space, you can't imagine the volume and pain of 357 rounds.

I have, maybe, 50 percent of my hearing left due to genetics. Damned if I'll risk the rest at the target range.

389 My Finn is a Model 28 built on a 1905 Sestroryetsk receiver that still has the Romanov eagle crest on it along with Finn National Guard marks. It has a heavy Sig made barrel (the first iteration used Swiss barrels until the Finns got spooled up to make them) on it and the main blemish was a damaged handguard and some dillhole tapped one screw hole in the receiver. The rear sights have a drift function via small screws for the rear sight blade and the front have the early version of the 'Spitz' front sight later carried over to the 28/30 and the 38.

RFB! I was an early adopter, and I do like it very much. It was perhaps not quite ready for prime time, at least out of the box. I wouldn't use it as a primary without a lot of testing. They've made improvements from the original design, most importantly the 'Gen 2' gas system.

394 tv gunfights, whenever a gun is introduced to a scene, there is a generic shotgun cocking noise. The don't see how it is possible to point an inanimate object without making a startling sound effect.

I recall there was a movie years ago called The Way of the Gun or whatever. They actors AND producers made a point of trying to make it real. One thing they did do was not put their fingers on the trigger every time the pulled a weapon.

Anybody see the movie "Guns Akimbo"? Kinda weird black comedy thing, but has its moments, very much like a comic book. Anyway, the protagonist is the guy who was Harry Potter (no idea his name), most of the movie has his narration about what's happening to him.

At the beginning of the movie, he's - well he finds himself stuck with guns for hands. Right off the bat he's trying to use his phone to call for help and he fires one of the guns. And the comment is "you know in the movies when they're all shooting and... well it's a lot louder than that" as he begins to vomit in his coffee cup. Yes, they're loud.

Even John Wick 2 couldn't help themselves with the suppressor myth during the airport "shootout".

Posted by: THE Lonebadger

See, this it. Longterm storage plans may be necessary for your rifles, pistols. Somewhere that a warranted search by ATF or some other agency won't necessarily find. Those things that Weasel showed in the article. Something to think about.
And storing ammunition, too. Real ammo boxes you can get from government surplus stores (is there one near you?) and stored with dessicant to keep your powder dry (literally).
We are making plans on storage for older firearms we own that our government might not be aware of.

This is something for everybody to consider. And sure, you live in Texas or some other allegedly firearm friendly state. It won't happen to you, until it does.
Good luck, and think about this.

407 I've got a cool 1911 story. While working at a local gun shop in Reno, NV (pre Cabelas, Sportman Wherehouse and Scheels) I had an old timer that came in to the shop wanting to see if we'd be interested in his 1911. The shop dealed in used guns and if someone brought one in that was worthy, we'd purchase it.
At the time I knew a little bit about the history of the 1911 and the various companies that were contracted to build and supply them during WWII, but not enough at the time. The old timer that brought it in said he was a fighter escort pilot flying P-47's and that he had won the gun in a card game from a B-17 crew member in England.
Just that story alone had me jacked up to buy it but I couldn't tell who the hell it was manufactured by except that it was manufactured in Elizabeth, NJ. I went and grabbed the owners son who was the gun department manager and told him what I was looking at but wasn't sure what the value could be placed at. When I told him it said Elizabeth, NJ his response was GTFO and he beelined to the gun counter.
He looked for an upside down looking "P" near a sight, authenticated it. It was a Singer. $12,500 later and a "For Display Only" it was the shops.

I think somebody mentioned you should get Sennheiser (the best for the cost), I'd asked if you meant ear buds or head phones when you said "earphone".

Do NOT let yourself think though that these are suitable for shooting! They don't work like that! You need something that will stop the impact/shock created, and noise cancelling headphones work in an entirely different manner for an entirely different purpose.

I think S&W was going to x-ray the hammers to look for micro-cracks. Hope they get them back soon.
We saw them at the gunstore and thought of all those ladies out there with small hands. It was easy to pull back the slide and set it. Hence...E-Z.

445 Weasel, as always, chock full of information. Thank you.
I have the Mantis system and I like it a lot.
This week was kind of a big week for me gun wise as I got my Sheriff issued concealed carry license.*

*Idaho, where I live, is a very gun friendly state. You can buy a gun from an individual with no information transferred between anyone-literally out of the back of someones truck. But if you want to buy a gun in a store, they do an FBI background check. Normal people have no problem with this. But I kept getting denied. I went through an approx 90 day process of getting fingerprinted, submitting to the Sheriff some info, finally got approved and photographed for the license.

446 422 So when Heidis new Glock 43x has the slide locked back it take a super human effort to release it. The release tab is so flat and I Can't pull the side back enough to release it. It's so fucking hard. I have a few Glocks and none are like that. WTF you guys?
Posted by: Cannibal Bob at January 17, 2021 08:58 PM (Dz5W3)

Ooof.

Well the good (?) news is a Vickers extended slide release is cheap and easy to install.

I have always been able to use the slide release on my Glocks but everyone's hand is a little different.

For working the slide, Grip the side with your weak side hand, and PUSH the pistol forward rather than trying to pull the slide back. See if that works.

450 Second cool part to the 1911 story is gun reviewer and writer in American Rifleman (and other gun mags) Wiley Clapp who would frequent the shop was told of the find. Next big gun show in Reno he showed up with Massad Ayoob and Jeff Cooper to take a look at it and check out a piece of history. Total fanboy moment for me. Wiley Clapp lives in Minden/Gardnerville area south of Reno.
To some here the names are already familiar, but if you are not familiar definitely look them up. Wealth of information be it guns or self-defense and a cool part of gun related history.

475 DB - if you're still here - and anyone else: heed the advice from the Morons. Either have a PO box for delivery, or have the courier service hold the ammo/whatever at their local facility and pick it up. That is, if you have any concerns about gun-stuff being delivered to your home.

Back when I was buying milsurps, I was at home a lot, and so was almost always home when UPS ("the brown truck of happiness") came by with my Mosin, or Garand, being delivered. The old driver who since retired, he got curious after about the third rifle delivery so I had him come in the garage when I opened the box.

He started buying Mosins after that, and we'd chit chat about milsurp rifles when he delivered something.

502 Earlier upstream for latecomers, Weasel has some good information discussing anti-corrosive storage bags which are designed for long term storage. There is also RIG gun grease that is pretty reasonable and smeared over all the metal and you run a patch with in the action and bore to complete the protection.

RIG is a more modern version of cosmolene which is a waxy grease substance used by militaries for decades as a preservative--the military usually applied it by dunking the rifle in a near boiling vat of the stuff.

Additional options include Safari's CLP Collector (has anticorrosive material added with the original formula), Boeshield, good water moisture metal protector developed by Boeing. And there is anti-corrosive paper plus zerust capsules. The last need to be used in closed containers.

The truth is that the police have NEVER been about preventing or stopping crime. They can't. In fact, the entire body of criminal law has as its basis that bad people WILL do bad things and that the remedy needs to be in place to deal with it accordingly.

I'm far from being an advocate for the cops. They coughed that up a long time ago. You will never see me running around saying "I back the blue!" because as far as I am concerned, the cops and criminals largely deserve each other. But the one thing I will say in defense of the cops is that their greatest concern is in the investigation of crime. At this, they do a bang-up job - when they don't, greed and ambition are usually to blame.

Posted by: Hairyback Guy at January 17, 2021 09:25 PM (R/m4+)

516 Continuing #503 - this is why we as a society need to give cops less and less and less to do, and realize that when it comes to personal safety, we are on our own. (Living in the country taught me that fast - the cops here are one step short of being completely fictitious. Calling 911 MAY get a cop here in 30-40 minutes.) If we were a heavily armed society where the criminal element knew they can play games at their very personal risk, and we elected governments that quit using cops to shake down people for money they can't raise on their own (yeah, I'm looking at you, Canyon - I see your cops setting up shop to pull over drivers every time I pass through...all because you can't manage money)...maybe we can have a much smaller, much more professional police force.
Oh, and by the way - police unions MUST be banned.

518 506 Weasel, I have tried all of these methods above and they all work properly applied. A lot of my old warhorses do not see much action because of ammo costs and range limits where I live. So, I keep them stored for the next generation.

The saddest thing though that I heard was when I was in England and went to a war museum. Several of their territorials were there to talk about the firearms when you went through. I had an interesting conversation with them about Enfields and they had to admit that they had never gotten to shoot one due to restrictions and cost while I get to shoot mine, for now, fairly regularly.

527 as far as I am concerned, the cops and criminals largely deserve each other

In a way, cops are for the criminals' personal safety since the average person has no duty to apprehend and constrain a criminal until that person's court date.

That is, without police, every crime is a capital crime. The police save the criminal from the victim's idea of justice.

532 Time to say thanks to Weasel again for the gun thread and the bright spot in my week. Glad to put politics aside for even a few lovely hours.

Regarding telling the police. Some states require it so if traveling you need to inform them as a matter of law, some states have the information that you have a ccw with the driver's license so be even careful. If you do not have a permit or do not have reciprocity with your state and the state that you are traveling through, be sure to follow all the the Firearm Owner's Protection Act --locked in case, ammo and firearm carried separately, etc.

Oh, and stay out of DC and NJ and NYC for sure traveling with firearms and ammo. People have gotten into trouble there regarding allowable ammunition and even an empty shell casing in one case.

537 Sigs are good guns. It's hard to go wrong with the major manufacturers.

I have a pack of photos I need to submit to the Gun Thread email address. I really have no excuse. Fun stuff.

I picked up a nifty bit of tech a couple months ago. The Spot Shot camera from Shooting Made Easy. It's essentially a web camera that mounts to your spotting scope and broadcasts video to your smartphone/tablet. I had the precursor to it and the new model is much improved. Miles better than the "universal" smart phone mounts that will attach your phone to the spotting scope. (In my experience, the lens of the camera on the phone is so far off the center of mass that gravity will make it rotate if you're taking video in landscape, like God intended.)

Anyhoo. The spotting scope camera is all of $70 and it will let you take video on your smartphone. Very useful if you're at the range by yourself and you don't have a spotter.

In TX, it is considered a courtesy. But considering a pissed-off cop will happily destroy people's lives and has zero compunction about doing so, I tell them every time. (I even mention where the gun is in my truck. The name of the game is to get the asshole away from me.)

My concern is interoperability. I know that if a cop runs my DL they will see I am a LTC holder. But...what about states I frequent, like VA or MD?

559 > I wonder if they're packaging decent CAD software with the things now?

FreeCAD is usable, and, well, free. It ain't AutoCAD, but it's pretty good. Maybe similar to GIMP v. Photoshop.

The basic process is this: CAD up your part and export it as .STL format (also saving it in the CAD programs native format, of course... saving early and often is recommended).

You then feed the STL file to "slicer" software, that cuts it into the layers that will be printed, and outputs G code (same stuff used for CNC machining, with extra commands to handle putting stuff on instead of cutting it off). The G code file is then loaded into the printer.

I use FreeCAD for design and Ultimaker Cura for slicing. Cura is also free. The slicing software generally has presets for most common printers, which you can tweak if necessary.

I also have a Creality Ender 3. It's a very popular model, which means there's tons of support (videos and such). The printer itself is an open source design. All the CAD drawings, schematics, and software are available for download.

560 screaming in digital,
Jen, Weasel, Mark Edwards, and others here can give you excellent guidance.
Myself, I taught my mother how to shoot after my father passed so I understand it can be daunting but she can now put multiple holes in a target with that and her shotgun. The dirty secret is that women generally take to firearms and shoot them accurately than men. Men often have ego issues and do not have the fine muscle control that women usually have over muscles.
The main secret to firing an handgun is to get a firearm that fits your hand and where you can operate all the controls.
In practical terms, the first rule of gun battles is to have a gun. Most gun presentations end the threat without firing a shot. However, one must be prepared when it does not to pull the trigger.
For home defense, it is also often easier to fire a longarm than a handgun if your home defense plan is to shelter in place. A 20 gauge shotgun is equivalent to firing two 44 Magnum shells at the same time and many youth models fit smaller statured men and women quite well.
Be sure to bring any questions and people will be around to answer them on the gun thread every Sunday.

579 565, Picric, go ahead and join. Right now, the NRA still has a large membership and they do training in a lot of states. Shooting Illustrated, is one magazine that is useful as well as sometimes the American Rifleman. In addition, they did offer firearm theft and damage insurance up to a certain amount for firearms without having to send in serial numbers and pictures. Cannot remember whether it is $1000-1500 total but membership is worth that at least because homeowners usually requires a deductible or even a policy rider and the firearms owned are on a schedule with serial and descriptions.

Oh, no doubt, like any bureaucracy, they will put pedal to the metal in some instances. If a cop, for instance, gets a hangnail on a traffic stop, the entire weight of the State will come crashing down on the poor driver, and FAST. Might just start printing out the gray boxes of troll posts and putting them on a target for fun.

not trying to be a jerk here but to be fair, I probably am. But I really think the idea that Sigarms makes the best 1911 is wrong. Then again, I could be wrong, as i have never shot one.

I have both a Sig and a Kimber 1911. Both are full size. The Kimber is my EDC.

However, both guns are very accurate and reliable, I just prefer the Kimber over the Sig.

I don't doubt they make quality. I am a Kimber and old school Colt man myself. But after seeing SW pretty much fail though have been making 1911 parts for years, I just got a burr about Sig going to the top for some reason. They are like a craft distillery. No way can they make a 1911 better than all who have been doing it for decades. But again, I know they make a good product.

I forgot to mention, the Sig has an external extractor, which I don't much care fore. I prefer the internal extractor on the Kimber, as it's easy to remove and clean if it gets gummed up.

But, again, both guns have run wonderfully well and, even after extended bouts of not being shot.

i don't like the external exrtacter either. Change is my enemy lol. Again I am sure they are nice weapons, I know sig is almost universally respected. A bit of this is tongue in cheek but not all

I do know when S *W started making 1911s many scoffed. But it turns out they had been making 1911 parts for other companies for decades. And even SW pretty much blew it with the 1911.

607 Corrosion of steel firearms components is due to the activity of one or more of three different bad actors: acids, ionic compounds (typically some kind of salt), and bacteria. Each of these three bad actors require some moisture to do their damage. That moisture can come from humid air, sweat, rain, or immersion.

Aluminized vacuum bags should keep moisture away from metals and prevent corrosion, but low humidity and vacuum can seriously damage wood and some plastics.

A better preservation practice for steel firearms components is to apply a wax-based rust inhibitor containing barium petroleum sulfonate. This defeats the harmful effects of the three bad actors and provides a durable barrier to exclude moisture.

The best wax-based rust inhibitors containing barium petroleum sulfonate meet the requirements of MIL-PRF-16173E Grade 2 Class 1. These rust inhibitors will protect bare steel left outside in tropical jungle conditions for two years or more. They are beneficial to wood, but will darken brass, nickel and silver.
