Weird week. I'm used to writing these in the evening, but I have appointments all evening so I'm writing this in the middle of the afternoon. Also, I don't have as much material as usual. I have been staying far away from social media lately. It's just toxic, toxic to mind, body and spirit, and frankly I don't need that right now.
One thing I will comment on is the camera on my new iPhone 12. I'm not one who rushes out to buy the latest technology, but my old iPhone 8 was giving up the ghost recently so I got a new phone. The camera on this thing is amazing.
This was taken from the dock, at 11 PM, in a snowstorm. The only light is from the propane lantern in the sun room (power is out). Still snowing, no moon or stars out.

When our group was doing testing for a Cosmic Ray detector at the Bevalac at Berkeley, one of the other groups there egged on the operators to blast the instruments with high intensity stuff. I was off shift at the time in a 18 on 6 off kind of operation.
Anyhow, the idjits blasted the area so hard that all the hardware in the cave was somewhat radioactive, and they took off the dosimeters of everyone there to see if they had some issues coming. I don't think the people were too badly exposed, but all the hardware was now mildly radioactive permanently after just a few hours.

At worst, you'll get a few years worth of xrays being around it but it won't just make you drop dead. Even the graphite rod containers would only burn you and then kill you within a week or two. And that was immediately after the reactor exploded.

I still use a stand-alone camera (Olympus Pen mini DSLR), and had been planning to upgrade it last year before going to Europe in the fall. But Olympus's exit from the camera business combined with cancellation of my trip meant I didn't. And when I saw the quality of photos taken with the iPhone 12, I decided I don't need a stand-alone any more.

when I use it with a zoom lens, and not much at that. I carried it with me (with the zoom lens) on January 6 and took photos with both phone and camera, and the phone pictures were better more often than not.
General purpose computers always beat dedicated devices over time.

Well in the case of the cave, the experiment was to detect cosmic rays - nuclei that come from the galaxy and hit the upper atmosphere and break themselves up and/or chip off parts of the air's nuclei when they collide. If you do that, you get unstable isotopes that decay, some not for some time. Carbon-14 is used for dating wood/bodies because it has a half life of 5000 odd years so the intensity of the radiation from this source drops off the older it is.

You manage DDOS attacks with having enough load balancers and replicated web servers.
Small websites can fall prey to that because they probably don't have that level of infrastructure that have bigger sites with alot of stout hardware cannot.

Really intense radiated materials usually decay pretty fast. Fast Thermal Neutrons that you get from a nuclear reactor core can modify elements and are deadly radiation.
Most other radiation types are mildly radioactive, long-term, slow decay isotopes.

No. They finished the new outer shell which is now over the older concrete sarcophagus. But that is being dismantled under neath the shell so they can then start to clean up the two reactor buildings. It will take decades to complete that. But the new containment was slid into place a few years ago. Amazing engineering if you watch a YouTube vid on it.

I remember the title of a story from the 1970s (?), that I believe was for kids:
From the Pullizer Prize winning play by Paul Zindel, this is the story of Beatrice Hunsdorfer and her daughters, Ruth and Matilda. A middle-aged widowed eccentric, Beatrice is looking for her life in the classified ads while all about her is the rubble of an unkempt house. All she needs is the right opportunity, she says puffing on a cigarette. Poorly equipped to survive the vagaries of modern life, she has nonetheless always managed to muddle through. The residual ash from coal-burning power plants is slightly radioactive (all those megatons of coal concentrated in ash). And concrete is frequently made from coal ash.
There are actually regulations about how much coal ash you can use in concrete, because it can become radioactive with enough ash included.

Cousin doesn't even wait for things to build up. She explodes in profanity, gets the Elderly into the building, and of course sees that all the chairs are 6 feet apart. She pulls a chair next to the elderly and dangles her mask off one ear...

Everything pretty much is radioactive to some extent.
Carbon 14 is a nice one since the basic element in genes is Carbon, and if C-14 decays, not only do you get a dose of radiation, but the gene is broken since the atom there is now Nitrogen.

Iron is the most stable nucleus in the Periodic Table, IIRC. So steel cannot become very radioactive, because it's mostly iron. Some of the alloying elements can become radioactive, I guess, like carbon.

Granite countertops, too. Pink granite is mainly radioactive because of K40 in the pink potassium feldspar. But trace amounts of U and Th exist in granite, too.

Like the medical guidance is that you need to be within 6 feet of someone for 15 minutes to transmit through respiration.
I mean that almost never happens outside of people that live with each other or in hospitals where they are stuck in rooms together.
Even when I've been drinking, I'm very rarely face to face with a woman for 15 minutes. I'd say no more than 8 minutes, 10 tops.

Really intense radiated materials usually decay pretty fast. Fast Thermal Neutrons that you get from a nuclear reactor core can modify elements and are deadly radiation.
Most other radiation types are mildly radioactive, long-term, slow decay isotopes.

DOE is building a huge vit plant at Hanford, WA, and decided to "fast track" the project by executing the planning and building stages on parallel tracks. Problem is, they got halfway through a billion dollars before discovering that the plant they were still planning (and which was also under construction) was not going to be large enough to hold all the necessary equipment. Now they are trying to figure out what to do...

Not all coal is radioactive. Depends if it has had uranium-bearing ground water circulating through it. Elemental carbon is a reducing agent, and can precipitate uranium out of solution. Other metals, too. But most deeply-buried coal is actually depleted in radioactive elements. Carbon 14 is gone, because the coal is too ancient, and there was no groundwater activity.
I have viewed many gamma-ray logs of oil and gas wells, and coal seams (and oil or gas sands) are characterized by exceedingly low gamma count.

The site for the Corpus Christi KC shows is very nice and the club is friendly. They don't get big entries, so we try to put one in to support them.
The problem is that it's a three-hour drive each way for us. We left at 5:00 AM and got home at 9:30 PM. Long day for everyone. Dot went back into her pen and promptly beat up her brother Finn, poor guy.

As for the other comment that was way up on the thread about the blocks in Los Alamos that touching these blocks means death. That is laughable. That's not how Radiation Exposure works, Nor how irradiated materials behave. If for some fucked reason, and this was shown in HBO's Chernobyl Dramentary, You found yourself close enough to actually touch something that was so radioactive that you'd die, you'd have already been exposed to enough radiation that your fate was sealed. It's a long and very painful death, and like is alluded to in that series, you'd beg for the bullet.
This stuff is classic Dunning-Kruger Amnesia. These people are know nothings.
I have never understood why people have so feared Radiation. It's so Irrational. Granted this is coming from someone that had the opportunity to literally Teabag a Reactor Vessel. I would have taken a Selfie, but those weren't a thing then lol

The design of these boats is nearly unrecognizable. They ride on a 75ft foiling monohull that will race mostly in flight at four times true wind speed, up to 50 knots. It's more an airplane than a boat; more a story of aerodynamics than hydrodynamics.
The foils can raise in and out of the water anytime. They are huge. Two side foils about 3/4 toward the stern, and a tiny rudder. The hull is usually out of the water and dry. One of the foils is cranked out of the water, so the boat is on two points, the downside foil and the rudder. These boats turn on a dime.
And with the great camera angles, on the boat and helicopters around the bay, the visuals are fantastic. It's almost like being there.
I can stare at this for hours.

it is classic for sure and many Texas chili competitors use it if for nothing else, tradition. As others have said, the real key is freshness. There is a reason really good Indian recipes call for whole spices, toasted on the stove, and then ground. Any ground spice powder will lose flavor from the day it is made. At least Gebhardt is likely fresher than most because people use it so often.

I posted this earlier but it got willowed. I just got my proxy voting materials for Apple's annual meeting. I voted against every proposal the company was for, including the whole slate of directors, and for everything they are against. I can also submit a question to be asked of the Board of Directors at the meeting. While I am formulating something on my own with regard to their collusion with the other big techs to silence conservatives, I'd love to take suggestions as to effective wording from the early birds.
Don't suggest I sell the stock. I bought it in 2005 and have a huge capital gain that will take a couple of years to work down.

i hear ya. No doubt some towns in CA are garlic capitals. But many can get local stuff at farmer's markets. There is no comparison between smashing some fresh garlic and using garlic powder. But there are a few instances where I prefer the powder or at least use both. Some thick sauces like chili just do well with powder imo. And there are some really good garlic powders. Sure it is not the same thing, it is like comparing fresh ginger and ginger powder. They are almost two different ingredients altogether.

It is a view I came up with over a very long haul. one thing I know about stocks is they go up and down and could not give a damn about who owns them or why. The left virtue signals buy only investing in lefty companies, which is easy to do these days. But historically, they would get fleeced by devious mutual fund managers who create "socially responsible" funds and then charge super high fees.

I quite Amazon Prime the other day and it felt good. Apple will be a bit more difficult because I really don't want to go back to Android. If it takes a flip phone, so be it. I will seem weird to many but that is the price to pay. I wish there was another alternative. Again, huge opportunity here if people had the will and means to take it.
Never used Twitter, Facebook or those Dicks. I did give up on rental car companies as they went uber left early on in their anti 2a stances. Wall Mart deserves to lose most of their clientele but for some reason they will not.

I used to work or consult for lefty companies. If Leftism screws up cities, states and countries, it surely screws up companies too.
One thing I have noticed at lefty companies is that they are absolutely ruthless in cutting staff the moment it suits management. That ability to quickly cut losses counteracts their normal waste and foolishness in bad decisions.
Also consider that there a plenty of institutional investors and ETFs with charters that require investing only in PC companies. I wonder how often a company does crazy ass public things mainly to signal that they are portfolio safe investments.

Wal Mart gutted main streets in small town America. They had 24 hour Wal Mart super stores in the deep South long before they had them in cities. Chinese products from a mega corporation that killed local business. And people support them for some reason. At least they pretended to be non political for a while, but those days are gone. I can't think of a reason to support that store at all. I get many need to go there, but damn, what a cost they have charged when you think about it.

'tis not, and I happen to work in one of those industries (tech software). I'm fortunate to have a set of skills and experiences that 1) my company desperately needs, and 2) would have to pay through the nose to replace, if they could even find someone willing to take the job.
I'm absolutely grateful for this perma-remote-working situation, because I can now safely, from a distance, ignore all the H1B's and limo-lib virtue signaling self-hating whites crowing about being finally rid of the troublesome orangeman.
There are advantages to being able to rig one's ship for silent running.
