108 This is an impressive portrait. The scholar's expression says: "Yeah, I know I've got a lot of wrinkles. Let me tell you, they are all well earned."

The level of detail and use of color, especially the skin tones and contrast of the light and brown clothing, makes this a commanding painting. (I'm surprised there isn't more gray or white in the beard.) Also, the hard stare of the scholar while he contemplates what he just read adds gravitas to him and his abilities.

This is the kind of painting I could study if I were an art student. There's a lot to learn here.

Same reason that PROGDA uses the word "cases" for a positive test (which may or may not be accurate, but that's another story). You're supposed to envision people dying in the hallways of overcrowded hospitals due to the ChiCom WuFlu when the truth (remember what that was?) is nowhere near that.

Rose McGowan has been consistent. I'd say she's a Hell of a lot more honest than Hugh Hewitt, for example.

How many people do you know, in everyday life, that can conversationally discuss their politics in anything more than repetitive sound-bites ? I know very few. I'll say that Rose just got issued a different set of assumptions than many ham and egg Republicans. What we're watching is her public process of working through those, rejecting some bullshit along the way, and trying to arrive at a world view that makes some damn sense.

It runs both ways. Mention perceived flaws in Trump - then watch the comments fly that all boil down to "I find your lack of faith disturbing". I've watched loudly declared objective truths like "always back the blue" and "free trade is good trade" become quite a bit more subjective over the last ten years here.

Like I said earlier - most of the people I know in real space can't debate politics. They can parrot sound bites, moderately at first, then more loudly. And most of those paradigms accepted on faith probably had a grain of truth to them - forty years ago.

I discovered this about myself in high school. I was banding back and forth sound bites with someone and they had one more than me and I didn't know what to say.

I kind of shut up about politics in real life after that, holding it in until I felt like I could walk into a debate with the knowledge and backing to actually hold my ground. I've gotten soft-left people in real life to pause and reconsider, though I imagine there was little to no long term change in their thinking. Another reason political debate isn't that much of a priority for me. It changes very little.

Posted by: 18-1 at January 15, 2021 10:28 AM (qlFIA)

I don't really understand this thought process. Not everything that happens is an op, and it's not always coordinated by some string pullers who have some larger, nefarious purpose.

Sometimes things happen organically. However, what we KNOW is that there's a whole crisis/opportunity mentality that exists on the left, so when something like #metoo DOES come along, they'll figure out how to weaponize it.

But there are women and boys and girls, and yeah, even adult men, who are sexualized by powerful men. In Hollowood, in Washington, in board rooms, and pretty much everywhere. The people who come forward to tell their stories, they are often "rewarded" with having their names dragged through mud, being targeted for counterclaims of one sort or another, losing jobs, and years of turmoil... or worse.

Do a small handful of them use this kind of thing to target innocents? You bet they do. But the reason #metoo will die, is not because Trump is gone, but because power tends to win. It always has.

Perfect example of this at my workplace last year. Woman came up and asked if I was worried about the impending recession. This was when the media was all about the inevitability of a recession. I asked her, "Do you know what the definition of a recession actually is?"

She had no clue, which meant she had no idea what could actually cause a recession. The media is evil and takes full advantage of our non-thinking, headline-only society.

I think there was a time, especially when this country was founded, that one could expect all of the meaningful people in society to be able to debate politics honestly and openly. That time is gone, and as a result, the necessary underpinnings of Democracy as a form of government no longer hold. If leaders and policies are going to be selected by whatever catches an idiot's fantasy for the moment, then such a government will soon destroy itself. That's why the Authoritarians always step in when a culture reaches this point.

360 I kind of shut up about politics in real life after that, holding it in until I felt like I could walk into a debate with the knowledge and backing to actually hold my ground. Another reason political debate isn't that much of a priority for me. It changes very little.

Since the number of media sources and types of media have been steadily increasing throughout all of our lives the number of people that are publicly, widely known, our celebrities, have also been increasing more than linearly.

As a result of this and the inescapability of death, the frequency and even rate at which celebrities die is only going to increase.

One of the primary reasons to be a leftist is to never have to defend your self. All the opinions released to you have already been accepted as axiomatic. Anything in opposition is targeted as anathema. When any of that changes there's an update and you simply download and install a new set of opinions that override the previous ones.

I was in Edinburgh one night after Scottland had lost to somebody, maybe france, in a leadup to the cup. It was February, cold empty streets, and it looked like Scottland was attacked by bombers releasing millions of styrofoam chip trays. You had to carve a path between pubs through the trays. There must have been twice the volume of scottish people as there were chips.

462 The Lucas Film article in the sidebar is really interesting.

The sad thing, or one of them, is that there's no reason at all that a woman couldn't spearhead/direct/write a really awesome Star Wars that both looked forward and paid homage to everything that was great about it. But people will, with pretty good reason, assume that women aren't as good as men are. That we're all weak minded idealogues.

Why? Because the sorting starts early. There's not a "women's" whatever group on a college campus that isn't a feminist woke-fest and people like me (or probably every single female in these parts) take one look at the poster for a women's event and say, "Oh, hells no."

Of course when it comes to the entertainment industry most of the men are just as bad.

I think that setting out to make "conservative" entertainment is probably as much as a mistake as Kathleen Kennedy's attempt at making a feminist Star Wars, but conservative groups or at least purposely non-woke professional groups or networks to encourage talent to develop might be a way to go. Call it Mercenaries.
