This is an impressive portrait. The scholar's expression says: "Yeah, I know I've got a lot of wrinkles. Let me tell you, they are all well earned."
The level of detail and use of color, especially the skin tones and contrast of the light and brown clothing, makes this a commanding painting. (I'm surprised there isn't more gray or white in the beard.) Also, the hard stare of the scholar while he contemplates what he just read adds gravitas to him and his abilities. This is the kind of painting I could study if I were an art student. There's a lot to learn here. I was thinking about the premise of the latest impeachment was that the prez incited a riot on the 6th, or at the least, he should have "known beforehand" that violence would occur by inviting people to protest at the capitol.
Now we see 26,000 troops descending upon DC this weekend for the inauguration. With that number of troops, they certainly expect violence. Shouldn't Joe "know beforehand" that violence will occur, and therefore he should cancel the damned inauguration? It is a formality, anyway. Not necessary. I've watched loudly declared objective truths like "always back the blue" and "free trade is good trade" become quite a bit more subjective over the last ten years here. Metoo was designed to get Trump/Republicans. They don't need it any more.
Posted by: 18-1 at January 15, 2021 10:28 AM (qlFIA) I don't really understand this thought process. Not everything that happens is an op, and it's not always coordinated by some string pullers who have some larger, nefarious purpose. Sometimes things happen organically. However, what we KNOW is that there's a whole crisis/opportunity mentality that exists on the left, so when something like #metoo DOES come along, they'll figure out how to weaponize it. But there are women and boys and girls, and yeah, even adult men, who are sexualized by powerful men. In Hollowood, in Washington, in board rooms, and pretty much everywhere. The people who come forward to tell their stories, they are often "rewarded" with having their names dragged through mud, being targeted for counterclaims of one sort or another, losing jobs, and years of turmoil... or worse. Do a small handful of them use this kind of thing to target innocents? You bet they do. But the reason #metoo will die, is not because Trump is gone, but because power tends to win. It always has. Perfect example of this at my workplace last year. Woman came up and asked if I was worried about the impending recession. This was when the media was all about the inevitability of a recession. I asked her, "Do you know what the definition of a recession actually is?" She had no clue, which meant she had no idea what could actually cause a recession. I think there was a time, especially when this country was founded, that one could expect all of the meaningful people in society to be able to debate politics honestly and openly. That time is gone, and as a result, the necessary underpinnings of Democracy as a form of government no longer hold. If leaders and policies are going to be selected by whatever catches an idiot's fantasy for the moment, then such a government will soon destroy itself. That's why the Authoritarians always step in when a culture reaches this point. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 15, 2021 10:52 AM (trdmm) 327

428 I was lucky enough to travel to Edinburgh once, and while eating at a
cafe noticed a bronze plaque in Haymarket Square, marking where a German Zeppelin once dropped a load of bombs. ------------------ As a teen in London in 1977 I bought a poster at either the Imperial War Museum or the Tower of a late-WW1 poster of a soldier shaking his fist at a zeppelin in the aftermath of a raid: https://tinyurl.com/y58r5e45 Posted by: andycanuck at January 15, 2021 11:12 AM (ab0zp) The biggest German bombers of WWI, the "R-planes" were actually bigger than the bombers the Germans used in WWII Posted by: josephistan at January 15, 2021 11:17 AM (Izzlo) 451
Tell you what. Actively participating in the discussions HERE make swatting away stupid arguments elsewhere pretty easy.
My progressive bother asked me once how I turn FB liberals into sobbing idiots. I smiled and said "I get lots of practice". Ain't it the truth? I've long said that this place is like having a big ol' bowl of Wheaties for your brain every day. Posted by: BackwardsBoy - #WASTF at January 15, 2021 11:18 AM (HaL55) 452

""If anyone ever said I got ideas from Rush, I would say "no, Rush reads
AoSHQ, and he gets his ideas from me and the other people there." I heard rush talk about the 2 wings of the republican party as the judge Smails wing and the Al Czervik wing. This was a little after I said the same thing here, and I remember exactly how I said it, because I used that example for years, and even described how it occurred to me. I thought that was amusing. Janet Leigh. What a natural beauty. Her very first movie "Romance of Rosy Ridge" was on TMC last Sunday and I watched it again. TOTAL smoke show. Now..... her daughter.... Jamie Lee Curtis..... when she did the strip tease for Arnold in True Lies.... That is the MOST erotic fricking scene in cinematic history. Read a great biography of Eddie Rickenbacker and how our WWI pilots would target the German zeppelins.

Most of the men who have been the richest man in the world, in my lifetime, have been creeps. Elon Musk is an improvement.

It was February, cold empty streets, and it looked like Scottland was attacked by bombers releasing millions of styrofoam chip trays. You had to carve a path between pubs through the trays. There must have been twice the volume of scottish people as there were chips. Posted by: banana Dream at January 15, 2021 11:20 AM (w3rBT) 458

The Lucas Film article in the sidebar is really interesting.
The sad thing, or one of them, is that there's no reason at all that a woman couldn't spearhead/direct/write a really awesome Star Wars that both looked forward and paid homage to everything that was great about it. But people will, with pretty good reason, assume that women aren't as good as men are. That we're all weak minded idealogues. Why? Because the sorting starts early. There's not a "women's" whatever group on a college campus that isn't a feminist woke-fest and people like me (or probably every single female in these parts) take one look at the poster for a women's event and say, "Oh, hells no." Of course when it comes to the entertainment industry most of the men are just as bad. I think that setting out to make "conservative" entertainment is probably as much as a mistake as Kathleen Kennedy's attempt at making a feminist Star Wars, but conservative groups or at least purposely non-woke professional groups or networks to encourage talent to develop might be a way to go. Call it Mercenaries. Posted by: Synova at January 15, 2021 11:26 AM (BD/yx) 463
