Little know fact, that hill where windmill is sitting, was an old medieval burial mount. Common grave for sinners and other unfortunates- victims of the black plague and people executed for witchcraft. Later, as history moved on, it's been repurposed by the gentle folk of nearby villages to serve as a mill.

Mornin', all,
'Tis the first chilly morning here since last February or March. ("You remember those, don't you? Fifty years ago, it seems, and I remember it like it was yesterday --") People here find 38 F. to be bitterly cold. My reply: "There's this new technology. It's in all the stores now. It's called coats and jackets." Fen, if you're here, I watched the black kitten video at home last night. It was so short -- maybe 2-3 seconds! How could the poster determine what the kitten was actually doing in such a short space? But I liked the kitten and asked my black cat, "Did you look like that at six weeks?" He gave me a hard look. I imagined it meant, "No. I was good-looking." Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at December 01, 2020 09:47 AM (yvr3o) 90

Notice the frame. Modernist artists didn't like the frames that patrons of their work were choosing to put around their paintings, so they created their own. They wanted frames that complimented the work, not distracted or contrasted with it. This would become more common as Modernism progressed--that the artist would choose the frame. I once saw a work from the 1950s/60s that used pieces of a yardstick as its frame.

It's a pleasant enough painting with relaxing colors. I think this is one of van Rysselberghe's Pointilist works. They can be interesting but sometimes I wonder if they are more a showcase for a technique and less about the scene.
I do have a question. Is the narrow frame showing an actual frame or is it painted as part of the picture? I ask because it matches the paint colors and patterns on the sides of the mill. Posted by: JTB at December 01, 2020 09:55 AM (7EjX1) 126
Can't say I really care for this one. Design is nice, and the placing of the elements, but the purple just sits wrong with me, and the color palette seems to be all of one intensity.

One other question...should the mill be on top of a hill like that? If it's a water pump, you'd think it would be located closer to the water. Maybe it IS a grain mill.
Posted by: creeper at December 01, 2020 09:53 AM (XxJt1) "Mill" itself usually means "grain mill". Hence, "millstones". And putting it on a ridge takes advantage of stronger, more predictable winds there. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 01, 2020 09:56 AM (mzC78) 130

This is Pointillism. The overall purpose is to examine and exploit color and their traits. The subject matter is secondary to the color theory. The best way to examine a pointillist work is to look at it real close to see the dots, then slowly walk away and watch as the colors mix and create others.

The only I can say is that a friend once took me to the Frick to see Rembrandt's "Self-Protrait" (of course I had to just look up the name) which was startling deep and real. But in the basement, they had a collection of Rembrandt's pre painting sketchings which I found more interesting. I always thought the masters just got up in front of a canvass and did their thing. But I've come to learn that no, there planning stages and dry run sketches and years spent learning under masters. I guess modern 'artists' have it better cause peeing in a cup is a lot easier than all the above. Posted by: havelhavolim at December 01, 2020 10:22 AM (fLpTX) 253

I think I've come up with a way to tackle the student debt problem and deal with the problems of Academia at the same time.
Everyone who's been through high school since at least the 90s has heard the University pitch, usually from guest speakers they send out to try to recruit - a degree from a "good" school is the sole gateway to prosperity, there will be jobs lined up waiting for you, etc. Let's apply the Lemon Laws. The product was clearly misrepresented and oversold, and can't be made to perform as advertised. Students would be entitled to redress, whether they took on loans or paid their own way. Once the lawyers are done having an absolute field day, the multi-billion dollar endowments will be in tatters, the armies of redundant administrators will need to be cut back, and what universities aren't driven into bankruptcy will be far more motivated not to oversell and overproduce useless degrees. 9/11 proved that. Sure, we blew up some goats and stuff, but Western culture lurched abruptly to "Muslims are our most holy people". Posted by: Ian S. at December 01, 2020 10:31 AM Yep. Within weeks, President Bush was taking C.A.I.R. leaders through airports to assure them that no one was unfairly treating Muslims, calling Islam a "religion of peace", etc., and the narrative of every media outlet was "OMG! The backlash of Americans against Muslims in America!" And what happened after Black-Lives-Matter riots, looting, arson, etc? Massive support for Black-Lives-Matter by every single institution in the country. What happened after antifa riots, looting, arson and attacks on police and monuments and statues? Massive support for antifa's requests by local politicians to give in to their demands and remove statues, monuments, etc. Terrorism works. Rallies, protests (actual protests, not "mostly peaceful protests"), etc do not work. Remember the caravan in June to Lansing, Michigan so Michiganders could shake their fists at... nobody, regarding Wretched's lockdown orders. Remember how well that worked to get her to end the orders. Remember the TEA Party (Taxed Enough Already) and how successful they were with all their protests to get politicians to curb spending and taxing. Oh wait, that's right, they had no effect whatsoever. The left knows how to get results: terrorism and massive election fraud. Comes down to the fundamental difference between the ideologies. One side sees The State as the alpha/omega for implementing societal change. The other sees The State as a necessary evil.
Thus, one side gets the best and brightest, and most ruthless and driven, while the other gets people who would rather be doing just about anything else but feel called to "serve". Here is the truth.
The Deep State has plenty of money and influence to bribe people that it wants to do something. And if bribes don't work they have full access to your internet and phone history to blackmail you. And if that doesn't work they have the ability to make things up (why hello Sen Roy Moore). So it is very, very easy to just go with the flow even if you aren't down with the narrative. I imagine Barr has some skeletons he doesn't want to come out, and I'm convinced that Sessions has a child somewhere he really doesn't want his wife to find out about. And how do you fight that? What are you talking about? If a precinct reports a number that is literally impossible, you don't think that's worthy of remark in an opening statement? Posted by: Shenanigans at December 01, 2020 10:54 AM Sorry, I was just going by what you had posted. Did he give more information proving that it was impossible? Just saying that it is, does not mean that it is. I am an engineer and work in vehicle design. When I am asked to integrate a new system or component into an area of the vehicle, I can't just state "this is impossible". I have to do studies and investigate clearances and assembly feasibility, etc to show that integrating the new component is an impossibility. But more times than not, through investigation and study, we can find a way to integrate the new component. Granted, sometimes it means we have to make changes to components we did not intend to change. But, the fact remains that it was not "impossible." So that's my mindset when I read something like that. Unless he has the evidence proof that it is "literally impossible", I'm not just accepting his word for it. He has to show his work and prove it. This date, known as the "Safe Harbor" deadline, falls on December 8 in 2020. Posted by: blaster at December 01, 2020 11:03 AM (ZfRYq) I see a lot of "ifs" that haven't happened yet. Besides, US Code means a law. And what is DC famous for right now. Posted by: Justsayin' at December 01, 2020 11:14 AM (Fs5vw) 480
I was sued once under RICO. It was tossed, thank dog. It would have wiped me out.

The entire mill turns to keep the sails on the downwind side of the mill. The other larger mills you have probably seen just rotate at the top, but for the same reason. Posted by: G'rump928(C) at December 01, 2020 11:19 AM (yQpMk) 484

No worries. His point was that the machines can only run so many ballots. I think the number is 250k an hour, but they reported something like 400k an hour. So it was not a statistical improbability (which is circumstantial evidence), it was a mechanical impossibility. Posted by: Shenanigans at December 01, 2020 11:04 AM Got it, thanks. So yeah, in that case, that is definitely worth noting in opening statements. One thing I do worry about regarding all of this fraud is all the math and logic involved. If it's even a joke here that most commenters do not like math, I can't imagine what the average person in the general public is thinking about all this proof and evidence that involves understanding the math and probability of a lot of this stuff. I saw Kayleigh Mcenany post on Twitter yesterday how in 2016 with much less mail-in ballots, there was something like 5% of ballots dismissed. But in 2020 election with MUCH more ballots, there was some miniscule 0.005% or something of ballots dismissed. Someone replied "well that's good news, right? Means they fixed the problems from 2016 and are much more successful in the process now". I just shook my head and stopped reading the replies. Bino was just yesterday saying it hasn't been proved that Dominion's company website is related to the company. He's just a nutty conspiracy theorist, disregard him.
