The Intellectual Or Artistic Output of "Evil" Men: Is It Off Limits?

On Friday's Art Thread there was an interesting discussion about whether the art should be judged with the artist in mind...

Wagner the man was a rat bastard in many ways but the mother could compose.

Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Tyrannosaur Wrangler

And I responded: And that brings up the larger question of whether is is internally consistent to enjoy the works of those whose political philosophy and behavior is anathema to what we believe.

And we were off!

Muldoon:

I like to think in the same terms that I try to when it comes to authors, essayists, entertainers, pundits and commentators. That is there is a balance between the person and the product. If a Michael Moore speaks a truth, it can be accepted as truth and appreciated outside the context of Michael Moore's total body of work, yet the total body of work affects my willingness to look for the occasional nugget of truth.

A single Tom Cruise movie might be enjoyable, but after a while the constant jaw-clenching facial expressions make it about Tom Cruise, not the storytelling, and it becomes less enjoyable.

If an artist or entertainer isn't wearing their politics on their sleeve and doesn't have a track record of supporting vile politics, go ahead and enjoy the work. But if the man's overall body of work is vile, reject the man by rejecting his art.

We are confronted by this in popular culture to an insane extent. Seemingly every dancing monkey and ventriloquist's dummy in Hollywood and the music industry feels compelled to plague us with his political philosophy, moronic and inconsistent and dismissive of most Americans though most of them are.

And dipping our toes into the history of some of the greatest artists and writers and composers can leave one with a very bad taste in one's mouth.

For example, I love Hemingway's writing, in particular his short works. But I am also aware that the man was a horrid friend, a worse parent, and had political tastes that supposedly included drinking daiquiris while observing Che Guevara murdering his political enemies. Whether that is true is beside the point. The man was a prick.

Fast forward a few generations and we arrive at Steven King, whose early works were quite good as light reads (though not on par with Hemingway, except perhaps in his own mind), but the man hates us! His vitriolic spewings about anyone to the right of George McGovern makes it clear that he wants no part of vast swaths of America, except when they buy his books.

The list goes on and on. Serious art, fluffy movies, popular music...it's all filled with politically charged blather from the so-called "artists." Luckily it is easy to ignore most of it, since most of it is crap. But the filter of time has preserved some fine work by some not-so-fine people, and that is a more difficult and interesting dilemma.

7 Every movie made in the Soviet Union was financed through slave labor directly.

And yet the Soviet Union made some of the best movies ever like The Cranes are Flying and Andrei Rublev.

Since the Soviet Union no longer exists, I feel no guilt about supporting Mosfilm, the state film company that produced everything through the Soviet Union's existence, but it does raise this very specific question.

If I were alive in the 60s, how much Soviet cinema would I be willing to enjoy?

8 Which is not to say that we should be financing people trying to destroy us. It's not the act of enjoying the work that is a problem, it's the act of financing your own destruction.

13 I love this topic.

Just recently I had a discussion with an uber liberal trump hater business associate of mine. He quoted George Bernard Shaw on LinkedIn and asked why I didn't 'like' his post.

I told him that GBS was a fabian socialist and eugenicist and I didn't care to read or support his views.

*crickets* from my associate. He didn't know or care about Shaw's past, and then he reiterated how great the quote was. It was like I didn't say a thing.

19 I contend that one's (evil) nature will permeate an individual's work. It cannot be that good if it comes from an evil being. One's adherence to a political philosophy different from my own is not a repellent, strictly. It also depends on the type of work. Fiction - I can tolerate it. Again, up to a point. Hollywood lost me a long time ago.

43 Hi longtime caller, first time listener. I just wanted to chime in because I was involved in a conversation with some puritans (old school...the bad kind) about whether or not it was okay to listen to classical music because the composers were not Christian themselves. Imagine reading the comments at AOSHQ without any nicknames or identifiers. Wouldn't be nearly as entertaining. I think to an extent, the art IS the person creating it, and vice versa.

Can the idea stand on its own merits or does the context and perspective of the person expressing the idea influence the perception of the idea?

For example, I am willing to consider other people's points of view regarding face masks, but certain commenters (who shall not be named) get an automatic rejection and a skip over, based on past experience.

Treason doesn't seem like the correct charge, but strictly speaking there's no reason a person couldn't be both.

As for whether or not he was a hero, it depends on your assumptions. It's like a more ambiguous nuke Japan or not question. Did it make things better, worse, no impact? He was doubtless a man of bravery and conviction, but that doesn't answer the question.

58 I can't separate a modern-day entertainer, musician, actor, artist, author who feels it necessary to either malign me because of my political views ("don't buy my stuff if you support Trump!") or supports leftist ideology that has deeply contributed to the demise of America as we now stand. I just can't do it. But I'm also finding that feeling creeping in when I watch an old movie or show, for example, whose actors held leftist beliefs. Because I think they helped contribute to where we are now, and that I cannot forgive or accept. Will Geer, John Randolph, Elsa Lanchester, even Helen Keller (and so many others I can't think off the top of my head) have had support of Communism or Socialism linked to them. 68 The Soviets completely controlled all art within the state. For example, look at poor Shostakovich. He wasn't allowed to simply compose. Every few measures, every melody, every harmonic cadence had to be approved by several committees.
In the USA, we went in the entire opposite direction. We created modern art as a means of rejection of heavy handed Soviet art committees.
I've read stories that Jackson Pollack himself was an "op".

Two of the unwritten rules of behavior decided upon among my in-laws, particularly when gathered as a group, is that we ALL want to talk about politics and that we ALL agree that #orangemanbad. They know full well full well that their daughter / sister / aunt and I subscribe to neither rule, nor will we participate in any one-sided "discussions". They know, too, that both of us intensely dislike the Dims and their policies.

WE SAY NOTHING. I imagine that it bothers them no end that we won't, but there is no willingness demonstrated on their part that they want to listen to an opposing point of view, expressed calmly, yet forcefully.

OTOH, there is a couple, friends of us both, who are diehard Dims, and they know that we are not. We may touch on political topics from time to time, but the discussions have always been respectful and usually brief. Both sides know that we believe what we believe and that changing the minds of the other couple isn't something that is in the cards.

Is any of this ideal? No. But the barriers to open communication have been largely erected by the leftists and they show no sign of comprehending that they are the impediment, not us.

74 I find it rather easy to divorce the artist from his persona. A good modern example is The Outlaw Josey Wales, based on a story by Asa Earl Carter aka Forest Carter. Forest Carter had some ugly personal views, and many would like to ban him and all of his works forever because of that. But his personal views don't change the fact that not only is Josey Wales a good story, it has a lot of insight into war, and death, and honor, and in the end, forgiveness.

I find it amusing that quite a few 20 somethings have wanted to un-person H.P. Lovecraft because someone on facebook told them his cat's name. (he had a black cat, and he thought it was funny to give it a name that started with N and ended with R)

Modern art is heavily corporatized and bureaucratic. Heavily institutionalized and supportive of groupthink.

Art itself tends to trend towards the individualistic, but we've created institutions that only reward certain types of expression.

Artist makes the art, obviously. Resistance to the dictates of the system (those who promoted - the statee in this case) proved unbearable to many, that is why so many of them either died young, or were blacklisted.

Artists are largely from the group of people who might be considered retainers to the elite/aristocracy(the very bottom rung of the elite in a sense, they can climb socially). Elite thinking and depravity go hand in hand with leftist thinking. The fish rots from the head first.

Artists tend not to be especially well endowed when it comes to critical thinking so they follow the herd quite easily.

I think Performing Artists, absolutely, are predisposed to be hard left. (but not true creative Artists, who often are so into their own worlds that they are viewed as recluses and oddities by most who run into them)

Performing Artists spend their entire lives driven by an intense desire to do what other people will "Like". That's the only standard a Performing Artist knows - either the audience claps, or it boos, and they will do anything to stand on the stage and bask in that applause. We could spend time on how this is probably because they're desperately trying to bury the knowledge in their own minds that they are in fact completely reprehensible, amoral people, but that could take a while.

When I finally found out who Roger Waters truly was, it explained to me why "The Wall", especially the film version sucked so badly. I remember going to see it at the movie theater, all excited because I loved Pink Floyd at the time, and walking out thinking "oh wow that really sucked!"

He was very good when he worked as a collaborator with musicians like David Gilmore. But with "The Wall", Waters was allowed to drive the project, which is how it turned into a piece of bizarre neo-nazi bullshit.

129 Speaking of Wagner, it always "amuses" me when people denounce Nietzsche because the Nazis used a corrupted version of his philosophy, completely ignoring that he wrote an entire polemic denouncing his once friend Wagner for Wagner's anti-Semitism.

Which then segues into the time I denounced Alan Rickman to a friend of mine who is such an extreme Zionist she makes Netanyahu look like a squish after she had praised Rickman. She was shocked into silence when I informed her that Rickman produced that hagiographic play about Saint Pancake.

One thing about the collision of art and politics is that it invariably results in a profound decline in the quality of the art produced in modern times. Stephen King is sort of an example given how lousy his later works are, but that was also affected by his accident and going sober and clean. A more direct example is Rob Reiner, whose movies turned to garbage when he started directing political screeds rather than entertainment.

133 I'm pleasantly surprised that 13 episodes into "The Mandalorian" that show-runner and primary writer Jon Favreau, who is as big a leftist idealogue as they come (he was an Obama speech-writer, after all) has yet to overtly push The Narrative in the show. No blatant allusions to Trump or aspersions cast on his supporters, no gay/lesbian/trans storylines or subplots, no climate change, no ham-handed attempts to deal with racism. Sure there are "strong female characters", but they are not written as completely infallible.

Even Lucas gave Darth Vader a line attributed to W. Bush, so I fear that it's only a matter of time before Favreau gives in to his nature. Enough leftists like and watch the show that their twitter rantings for "more inclusive" plotlines (aka LGBTQX characters) might force the issue.
However, Disney also knows this is the only thing keeping the entire Star Wars franchise on life support and saw how the Woke Sequels and Soylo torpedoed the franchise in the first place.

So yes, as long as he keeps politics/political religion out of Star Wars (as far as it traditionally had in the original movies), I will continue to watch and appreciate this show...though avoid paying Disney for the experience.

135 133 I'm pleasantly surprised that 13 episodes into "The Mandalorian" that show-runner and primary writer Jon Favreau, who is as big a leftist idealogue as they come (he was an Obama speech-writer, after all) has yet to overtly push The Narrative in the show.

Nice post.

I used to be a gallery hopper and still pop into them in my travels to purchase something unique/original from the area I am visiting. From a local artist.

I have found that you can find (subjective) gems from people you have never heard of. Same for literature/novels.

Especially now, people are being promoted if they are in the club and the club is narrowing. I think we are missing 75 percent of some good work out there because of this.

With self-publishers, they rely on word of mouth and star ratings from amazon and goodreads, but you can get lost in the pile of books out there because everyone is an author now. And not many people actually take the time to sit down to read anymore (especially fiction).

You have to be a good self-promoter. One of the reasons why you see artists' work raise into the echelon of "great" or "good" works after they have passed away. Passionate artists are creating art, not promoting it.

Otherwise, it is who you know.

Trends don't help either. Art from "found objects" versus beautiful, time-consuming portraits/paintings or detailed sculpture, handmade furniture, jewelry.

And then there is the 3D printer...

145 Performing Artists spend their entire lives driven by an intense desire to do what other people will "Like".

I feel like it's more a sense of importance they want. They start of performing and feeling super important and powerful, and then oneday it dawns on them that they are just entertainment. Even talentless Kardashians can entertain, and entertainment isn't really that important. So in turn they have to step it up a notch and get political so can feel like they are actually contributing something of importance.

149 Fame destroys many artists. How can one credit the admiration of fans who cannot read music or play an instrument? Wealthy people must always suspect that an admirer wants something. I recommend that you run for office; it will terrify you that thousands of people are willing to give you control over $millions when they would not lend you $20 if you met them on the street and promised to repay by mail.
The situation inevitably creates in many public figures a disdain for the public.

159 A bit of a roller coaster for me. As a musician, I'm technically an artist, but i really don't view myself as an artist, because anybody who is good at what they do are artists in their own way, and I barely view myself as a musician, because musicians to me are people who show up with their music stand, will read the sheet music, and play any genre and be happy to do it. Yeah, not me, my musical focus is as narrow as those 2 piss holes in the snow that biden calls eyes. At the same time I view other musicians as peers, and when I see them abuse their position that soooo many bust their ass to achieve to be a raging political asshole I'll use their CDs as a fucking clay pigeon. I can separate the art from the asshole to a point, but once you become a serious asshole I won't piss in your mouth if your teeth were on fire. Especially musicians, because I don't need them, I'll make my own music. I'm harder on my own kind. When I see "metal" musicians being leftist assholes, which was super... SUPER rare in my day, all I see is a hypocrite, because our genre traditionally had nothing in common with anything remotely left.

Jews were historically(after the diaspora and fall of the West Roman empire) a rivalrous group within the elites for bureaucrat jobs. A similar role was frequently played by clergy. This came to be largely because of issues of literacy(Jews and clergy were literate, the first few generations of nobility as kingdoms were established typically weren't). Additionally legal prohibitions of the activity of Jews tended to sequester them in roles we know today as professions. The aristocracy of Europe was at the same time conjoined and frequently hateful towards Jews.

Peasant dislike for Jews largely amounted to similar things as belief in witches. I believe the aristocrats of the era likely promoted such beliefs so as to eliminate rivals. In a somewhat ironic inversion the Spanish crown used accusations of crypto-Judaism to control their own aristocracy.

Speaking of which; there are accusations now that some CIA and SF casualties reported a couple of weeks ago were deliberately mis-attributed, and actually a result of the purported raid in Frankfurt. So, Wagner gets a pass and Roger Waters doesn't. I try not to let politics influence my enjoyment unless the politics involve my destruction. I don't care how good an actor DeNiro might be, I don't know how you can see his face on screen and not see a guy who wants you destroyed. That's not art I can enjoy. 196 I think there's a difference between classical works in art or music and modern works, in regards to abhorrent people and their works.

One difference is that the earlier works have rules and systems to satisfy and are judged by their objective value within those systems while modern art is mostly seen as entertainment and is judged more by its ability to distract us. The second difference is that the purpose of modern art, again entertainment, is for it to be propaganda. Now the earlier work is supposed influence and direct action yes, but propaganda is crude and is subject to the arbitrary whims of our ruling class.

So, with these differences I can enjoy the works of Wagner, or even Communist Mahler without liking the men as their works are more restrained to a system which produces objectively good results. But modern directors, writers, creators of our current entertainment can put out dreck because nothing better is required.

197 (No spoilers please!)

Just like Jack Ryan. Season 1 was amazing. They humanized the Islamic terrorist without excusing his evil.

Then Season 2 was set in Venezuela, where the villain was - get this - a right wing dictator and the hero was a sweet female left wing high school teacher. This, in the country that brought us Chavez and then Maduro. Ruined the suspension of disbelief. Plus Jack Ryan was a wuss in that season.

199 As long as the individual doesn't make a huge fuss about hating everything I am and do, I pretty much ignore they themselves and enjoy their work. For the most part, I really don't give a damn about an entertainer's or writer's personal life. Only when it is so in my face that I can't ignore it do I refuse to financially support them. Sean Penn, Danny Glover, Harry Bellefonte, Bette Miller, Barbra Streisand, David Handler, Michael Connelly, and some others are on my totally avoid list. I have a Bellefont recording and a couple by Babs in my music collection, but I did not pay for them. I snagged them for free back in the day.

Who makes the art? The one crafting it or the one financing it? The director or the producer?

If I was to purchase a ticket in 1960 to view a Soviet film, who would be benefiting? The director or the producer? Kalatozov or Mosfilm?

And Kalatozov was, as far as I can tell, a true believer. Tarkovsky wasn't, though.

If that is the case, (1) that's a massive escalation, and (2) the shit is absolutely going to hit the fan in the special operations community, because the CIA fatality is a former SEAL. They're already on a lot of people's shit lists, and if this thing actually did go down, that's going to reflect poorly on their entire organization.

B.C. said that he's heard both of the artists interviewed and at times they sound like drooling morons who have no idea where their songs come from. Sort of idiot savants. Or "artistically touched by God."

I think that I can, to some extent, disconnect the person from the work. I used to love Arthur C.Clarke; it turns out, he was probably a raging pedophile. That makes me like him personally a whole lot less, but doesn't necessarily negate my feelings for some his work.

So... I can tolerate some idiocy from musicians/artists/ writers. The key word is some. At a certain point, they will just annoy the crap out of me and I'll eliminate them from the rotation so to speak.

Endless River is made up of the late Richard Wright recordings that were never used on an album. So Gilmore and Mason got together and created an album out of them. 229 We've gone through this thread without anyone pointing out what a truly rotten person Wagner was. Not just his political views - he spent his adult life bouncing from house to house of people who admired them. While he was a guest, he would try to sleep with their wives, and their daughters, and would even steal their silver and pawn it off for spending money. Inevitably he would end up being thrown out, but he would just move to a new city or new neighborhood and do it all over again. Even Beethoven was just notoriously cranky, he was never a thief; of all the "bad artists" out there, Wagner was unquestionably one of the absolute worst.

I'm going to respectfully disagree about The Wall. I dislike Waters personally, however, I do see a lot of artistic value in The Wall (the album) if you take Waters' personal story out of it. There are a lot of interesting, underplayed songs on it that talk about alienation, the dissolution of a marriage, as well as mental illness. Those aren't necessarily conventional songs in terms of pop radio, but they are, in my opinion, valid artistically and relatable.

262 He was very good when he worked as a collaborator with musicians like David Gilmore. But with "The Wall", Waters was allowed to drive the project, which is how it turned into a piece of bizarre neo-nazi bullshit.

Posted by: Tom Servo at November 29, 2020 12:42 PM (V2Yro)

I'll sign on with this. Waters-era Floyd was generally great stuff, except for The Wall, which was shit. The album had a couple decent radio-play songs. The film was unwatchable, pure shit. The Wall was less Pink Floyd and more a Roger Waters self-pity vanity project, and that showed.
Posted by: Pennsyltucky at November 29, 2020 01:05 PM (+3rQF)

Waters killed Floyd. But, they let him roll right over them. I liked the Wall when it came out, but just sorta in retrospect. Only wore out one of 4 sides. The Final Cut was the first PF I never bought since 1971, and was really just the shit that wasn't good enough for the Wall. The power of Floyd lay in the synergy, and Wright was a far stronger part of that than anyone gave credit for.

Consider Waters never really wrote lyrics until DSOTM. He never sang front until Animals. Fucking had to be taught bass by Wright, and finally picked it up in 1969. His power lay in working with others, as theirs did working with him. Kind of the case with most bands. Oh well, the only PF I still play is from DSOTM backwards.

At this point we're unlikely to get anymore use of the Republican party, and the existing leadership is likely to interfere with or discourage our extracurricular activities. Before they were a useful but flawed tool. Now(assuming Trump doesn't win) we have no more use for them. They in fact would disguise the one-party state, giving it a veneer of legitimacy.

287 Oftentimes, the political views of the artist make their way into the work, which can be quite unendurable regardless of any other aesthetic qualities. Wagner for one imbued his work with his moral and political philosophies, which were then used as propaganda for racist ideology nationalists in the 19th century. Since I'm quite removed from the damage that such ideologues did I can enjoy the hell out of Wagner, I can even separate his ideologies in his work from the ends to which it was twisted.

When I read the books I'll watch movies by liberal artists, they frequently feel the need to bludgeon me over the head with their ideology, sometimes very bluntly and sometimes very subtly. As I've gotten more wise about the world, I spot much easier than I used to. It usually runs to the experience for me.

Of course I'm a product of my time. It's entirely possible that in another 50 years, people will be able to look at something like Will & Grace and talk about the aesthetic achievement without also the hyperpartisan b******* that it forces upon its contemporaries. Time will tell.

297 Artists, celebrities, whatever should be admired solely for their work. The vast majority of famous people got that way due to two things:
1) A somewhat natural talent for the thing/things they are famous for
2) A almost dogged willingness to put all other responsibilities of life aside in pursuit of fame and/or money via that talent.

Thus their family and personal lives suffer the most. But they also generally lack an understanding of the world at large. A very, very smart doctor will quite often have little to nothing knowledge of current events or history or how to fix a broken lamp. Smartness...or "smartness"...is not always, and depending on the domain nor even often, transferrable outside their domain of expertise.

Ok, a couple things, here.

Sure, Wagner, for instance, was a total dick. But he was a virtuoso. I don't even like opera, but I like Wagner. By contrast, modern American culture is a yawning sewer, bereft of literally *any* creative or intellectual value, and filled by an nepotistic mob of mediocrities and perverts. Because it's a stinking heap of trash, it's much easier to dismiss out of hand, as nothing is lost by ignoring the cultural effluvium spewed by the Commies.

Secondly, Wagner is deader than disco. The worms finished feasting on his Kraut corpse long ago, and his jew-hatred is no threat to me in the here and now. But our "cultural" "elite" are very much alive, and they hate me and mine with a passion. So no, I won't be consuming their desultory dross and making them rich while they agitate for my social (and eventually, physical) destruction every day.

AFAIC, these people can all go piss up a hangman's rope.

I wonder how such an awful person can create such beautiful art. Knowing more about the people I enjoy can do that for me, although it depends on the person. Roger Waters, for instance, makes it very difficult for me to like "Comfortably Numb" unless I willfully ignore it, which I can do.

For me, an even more interesting question concerns philosophy itself. Can I respect the philosophy, knowing that the person who came up with the theory had it go catastrophically wrong in practice?

Rousseau comes to mind here. IIRC, he believed that people were innately good, and didn't discipline his kids, consistent to his philosophy. They turned out horribly, as expected, and that example turned me off completely from what he had to write about.

325 Regarding the Frankfurt firefight:

Yes, all of this seems tin foil hat.

Think of all wars throughout history. Think of all communist takeovers throughout history. Cripes, think of just what happened in Cambodia. Just unthinkable. WWII and Hitler? Unthinkable.

How is what is happening right now any different in the scale of the unbelievable? We are living in unbelievable times.

Man up. This is real. A storm is coming. Batten down the hatches.

And he said "It's not inspiration; I get dressed in the morning, I sit down at my typewriter, and I write for 8 - 9 hours every day. And I do that 5 or 6 days each week." Wodehouse too. He developed a system that gave him the rough skeleton of his stories and then filled it in with his wit. He used that to push out streams of work the public loved. Now he came from a different background certainly than Spillane and his objective was, I think, simply maintaining his social standing.

As movie theaters die off, production money dries up, and streaming becomes more important, I wonder if the likes of Sean Penn, Jennifer Lawrence, Danny Glover, etc. are going to be able to demand huge sums of money for their participation in movies. Baldwin's most recent other successful work was playing uber-conservative GE CEO Jack Donaghy on "30Rock."
As with the the Ron Swanson character on fellow SNL alum Amy Poehler's "Parks and Rec," Baldwin's Donaghy went from conservative punchline to the father figure/mentor/voice of reason for the series lead female lead. Baldwin made the character cartoonish, but despite this he was endearing, especially in how his 'greedy, mean conservative' values/advice were spot on more often than not. There was one episode where Donaghy was high on his streak of "Reaganing" -- everything kept falling into place/going perfectly. Heh.

His work in this role made me temporarily choose to ignore what a violent douche Baldwin is in real life. He's a jerk, and a Lefty through and through. He tweeted out "You're Welcome" and a pic of himself in SNL Trump attire after the MSM declared Biden the winner.

I'll agree with Mrs D too - Hallmark writes stuff to suit its audience, not to spit in their face. When visiting home in college, as a maniacal reader I read quite a few romance novels, some good some less so. There's a formula, sure, just like in action movies, and it suits the women that like that stuff very well.

If they suddenly started making only taut psychological thrillers then women could no longer drop into and out of the plot without concentrating on it, which is not what they want when going to Hallmark.

Today woke crowds deliberately attack their audience. Hallmark doesnt so far.

387 Two of my Dad's cousins were architects, like myself. They both killed themselves, in separate incidents. I dabbled with suicide during part of my earlier life as well.

My Dad asked me if there was something in the makeup of the creative personality that led to depression, alcoholism and suicide. Considering that both of my grandfathers were raging alcoholics, and that has been passed down to several of my sibs and cousins as well, I'd have to say there is probably some truth to that.

The creative mind isn't necessarily the rational mind, so what the artists lean to in their politics may or may not be rational, at all.

Doesn't necessarily negate their art.

Yeah, it's crazy AF. As I said earlier downthread, how can something like this happen in one of the larger metropolitan areas of the EU without anybody catching wind?

Then I think about being in one of the largest Server farms in Silicon Valley circa 2003. You could set a Howitzer off in their and nobody would know. That assuming there was no firefight outside, which is possible. Also, most of the R&D areas in Silicon Valley are virtual graveyards on weekends. Miles of empty parking lots and solitude.

For the time being, I file this under the rest of psyops, on our rather short sided checklist.

There's a scene in Julie and Julia where Amy Adams' magazine editor/boss is supposed to be the bad guy because he's berating her for not producing printable stories. As she storms out of his office he yells "If I were a Republican, you'd already be fired!"

Basically, if your employer expects you to produce, on time and of acceptable quality, then he's a wicked old villain.

Of course, the movie is a total steaming pile of monkey crap, because of Streep's Rich Little with Tits routine, and the cliched obsession with McCarthyism and the Blacklist.

John Brown was a terrorist, pure and simple. The fact that I sympathize
with the goal he had in his last terrorist act at Harpers doesn't change
that. His revenge murder of Southern sympathizers at Ossowatomie in
Kansas was inexcusable even in that supercharged atmosphere.

Brown's raid killed people - in fact the first one it killed was a
black man if i recall right - and if it had been more successful would
have killed more of the ones it purported to save.

I'm a pro-North guy through and through, so I have no truck with the

Part of the problem nowadays, and probably for the past 10+ years, is that artists are constantly, relentlessly asked to comment on politics by the entertainment media, which is just as politicized as the rest of the MSM (if not more). They are expected to spout the latest woke values on the red carpet, in fashion or celebrity magazine interviews, while out plugging their latest work. If they say something neutral, they are demonized, attacked by other celebrities and then quickly "clarify" with the proper talking point. It's even worse if they refuse to comment, such as Taylor Swift being hounded and denounced by the entertainment media and gossip blogs for years for refusing to support candidates or comment on the latest Lefty issue (pssst! she's secretly a Nazi!).

If we were to outline it in clearer terms.

Is it acceptable for a slave to kill his "master" for his freedom? If yes, then by the transitive property inherent in 'defense of another' when it comes to use of lethal force, would a third party not then be justified?

The remaining question of collateral damage would fall under just war theory.

That's probably not fair to some musicians who are actually serious about their work, but there's enough of the jackasses around that it taints them all in my mind.

Alas, I am not nearly so "open minded". I try not to support people that hate me. And since you brought up the topic of German cars, I confess that I waited until after my father died (grandma had 5 stars in her window during WWII) before purchasing a VW. He would have read me the riot act while he was still alive.

The more interesting question (at least to me), is why does God grant these reprobate orcs the talents that they possess? I can't say for certain, but I suspect that it may have something to do with the fact that these narcissists are perpetually whining about how "life is not fair."

Agreed. As it is clear pointed out to us in scripture.

What's puzzling is that God created these narcissistic Hollywood leftists, and I would presume that He did so because it somehow pleased Him to do exactly that. They have chosen to live their lives as enemies of God. Most have nothing good to say about God, and frequently accuse God of high crimes (because life is not fair).

So although God's expectations for them may be high, because of the gifts that they were given, they have clearly rejected those expectations, and set themselves up as judges of God Himself. It will be interesting to see how that plays out in the future.

FWIW, I studied broadcasting and the cinematic arts in college, and we looked at her work. I do think that Riefenstahl is a brilliant filmmaker. In his own way, so I Michael Moore. Both are incredible propagandists. Personally, I despise both of them.

Bottom line: These people are idiots. Incredibly talented idiots, but idiots nonetheless. There is nothing wrong with enjoying an artist's work while holding them in contempt as human beings, because most of them have the emotional maturity and continence of children. They may have the talents of gods, but in everything else they are infants.

One should regard political pronouncements from entertainers the same way one regards political pronouncements from beautiful, precocious, charismatic children: with gentle amusement and condescension. They just want someone to pat them on the head and tell them how SMART they are. That's literally the depth of their understanding.

Starting tomorrow, there are 14 full days before the electoral college convenes.
That is plenty of time for SCOTUS todo the following:
--- Grant a hearing with oral arguments to determine whether the plaintiff (Trump) has been denied the right of due process of being allowed an evidentiary hearing in the lower courts concerning his claims in contested States that there was massive violation of election laws.
--- Upon determining that the plaintiff has indeed been denied his right of due process to admit evidence in court cases in which he has clear legal standing: as remedy, SCOTUS then specifically chooses and orders lower courts to immediately conduct evidentiary hearings to cure the violations of due process. One evidentiary hearing per contested State.
--- As soon as one of the lower courts concludes its evidentiary hearing establishing a factual basis regarding ballot observers and the counting of mail-in ballots, SCOTUS holds a hearing with oral arguments to determine whether election officials preventing ballot observers from seeing legally relevant information on ballots was in violation of State election law. And if so, whether that in turn eliminated the ability of ballot observers to object to potentially invalid ballots. (All States' election laws have provisions for observers objecting to problematic ballots. But Pennsylvania election law explicitly and unambiguously declares that ballot observers have "the right to object" to potentially invalid ballots based on their observations.) Here, the Court is setting up the dispositional precedent that will be applied to the other 5 contested States as well.
--- Once the Court determines that based on the evidence there have been gross violations of Constitutionally protected State election law on a massive scale that could effect the outcome a State's election, the Court can issue the following remedy: the ballot counts of each massively law-breaking county are declared null and void. Those county's election results are voided due to massive ballot spoilage caused by the county's gross unconstitutional actions. This in turn nullifies the certification of that State's election results. HOWEVER, the Court also rules that the State may re-tabulate and re-certify its election results as long as its Constitutionally protected laws are observed in the process such that no illegal ballots are included.
The State does not have to re-certify. It is free to do nothing and thereby opt out of participating in the electoral college. That's entirely up to that State. What it cannot do is include in its certified results massive batches of invalid ballots that were tabulated in a systematically illegal and unconstitutional manner. So if the State wants to re-tabulate its election results counting only legally cast ballots and then certify those results in order to have its 20 electoral votes counted in the electoral college, it is free to do so.

SCOTUS has a clear path to confront and eliminate the unconstitutional, lawless theft of the 2020 election without disenfranchising a single vote. They put burden of legally and Constitutionally certifying a State's election results back on the State in question.
To the extent that thousands of individual citizen votes are disenfranchised, the blame will lay squarely at the feet of the corrupt counties and election officials who illegally spoiled the ballots in coordinated fashion.

557 One of the things that most serious artists come to understand, after years of work, trying to make a living, is that "There is no accounting for taste".

Posted by: pawn at November 29, 2020 05:06 PM (Cfk8j)

558

Note that completing the evidentiary hearings will not take long.
It is SCOTUS's prerogative to set the parameters for what kind of evidence shall be considered relevant in the hearings. For instance, it can declare that evidence indicating whether ballot observers were able to read legible information on ballots and the envelopes containing the ballots as being particularly relevant.
So a lower court conducting an evidentiary hearing will merely be verifying that each piece of evidence submitted is relevant and has been subject to adversarial examination and that the piece of evidence is only admitted if the court does not find the piece of evidence to be faulty.

Realize that 95% of each of these evidentiary hearings will be swearing in affiants to reaffirm their sworn affidavits in open court and be available to cross examination IF there is material evidence that the affiant has sworn to a false affidavit. When the opposing side has no evidence to present that an affiant has sworn to a false affidavit: on average it takes less that two minutes per testifying affiant for a court to admit an affidavit as evidence.
Traffic court cases take longer for a court to hear than for a court to hear the submission of a credible affidavit and then allow its admission into the court's record. And anyone who's been to traffic court knows that most cases involving witnesses (defendant and ticketing officer) are concluded by the judge in well less of 5 minutes. Typically, more than 50 cases (with witnesses) gets processed before lunch.
Also, all affidavits for which the opposing side has no evidence upon which to base an objection get front-loaded. The affiants are sworn in and the affidavits are admitted as evidence extremely quickly - less than a minute per affiant.

It will take between 2-3 days (maybe 4 on the outside) for a court to conclude its evidentiary hearing for a particular State. And remember that these hearings are being conducted simultaneously by courts that SCOTUS has carefully selected to get the job done efficiently and fairly.

So, yes, 14 days is more than ample time for SCOTUS to act and remedy this unconstitutional mess.

Connie Chandler @ comment 561,

Rest assured, yes, Ace is one of the good guys. Not only that, he's one of the best of the good guys.

I'm not sure why he's not giving as much personal attention to the legal challenges. But I know he's appalled by the naked, lawless, unconstitutional theft of the Presidential election.
It simply might be too disheartening for him to speculate and opine about a truly dreadful situation over which he and we have absolutely no control. He might just be stoically waiting for the final death blow to Trump's difficult prospect of pulling off some way of legally nullifying the fraudulent results that threaten to steal the presidency. (Ace can be a bit of a cynic.)

Or, more hopefully, he's keeping his powder dry just in case SCOTUS decides to hear Trump's case. Maybe it doesn't make much sense to him to sound off on a legal case that is truly dead unless SCOTUS wants to weigh in.

Anyway, Ace is definitely one of the good guys. We need his voice like we need Rush's and Levin's.
