This is big. They're not going to make money on this releasing it "free" (well, free on a paid premium service) like this. They're not even going to get a bunch of new subscribers -- because a lot of them will just sign up for the free try-out period, and then quit. This is a give-up. This is throwing in the towel on a $200 million movie. This is admitting that theatrical exhibition is dead and it's not coming back to life. I don't know if we'll ever see any real blockbusters ever again -- I don't think you can make enough money on these things renting them online for $20. Plus, the minute you rent them online, they're not easily piratable. This might be big. This might be a major media domino tumbling over. There's a lot of internal pressure to release more like that.

That's what happened with Mulan.
Disney made about $260 million in the first week that they didn't haven't to split with theaters. If they had made that in the theaters, Disney would have only taken about $160 million of that. Released on Disney+ with the added $30 for access, they pocketed every penny for themselves.
The problem, in my mind, is that this cheapens these event movies and ends up making them feel like little other than another streaming release, of which there are dozens a week that no on ever notices.
I don't think it's a great long term strategy.

Yes, but there is another factor as well. This may be Hollywood acknowledging that it has to throw in the towel on $200 million *movies.*
If theaters are dead (and that remains to be seen, but I suspect it might be the case) and movie releases move to pay-per-view or premium streaming, then this is going to be a secular revenue dislocation the likes of which Hollywood has *never* seen. If this happens, it may mark the end of the mega-budget movie *period.*
That might end up being a good thing - more movies that are cheaper and with much cheaper stars. I don't know. But if theaters are actually dead, then I would bet that the mega-budget tentpole is dead, too.

$35 million is great for a streaming, but terrible overall, especially given how badly the movie was panned. I don't think it even made its money back. Disney probably realizes that the era of blockbusters is over, and SJW tripe with shitty production value can be had far more cheaply in many other locations.
The company is almost certainly going to be in for major restructuring. Especially when Trump wins and simply has Disney and all its IP seized...

Going to the movies is a pain in the ass. And then you have 10 people texting and talking on their phone around you. Fuck that. I haven't been to a theater in 3-4 years. But I've rented a few movies for $20 in the past 8 months. I don't know what the calculus is of money lost from teeangers going to movies vs money gained from people like me. But it may wash out.
Theaters themselves will be DOA. But Hollywood? They'll figure a way to make money from making movies.

The case for "more:" If domestic - or Western more generally - theaters die but Oriental - and specifically Chinese - theaters do not, then blockbusters will pivot *more* to satisfying the Chinese audience, with PPV or premium streaming revenues being a fairly modest revenue item for the overall production.
(* Even if the message and story aren't adjusted for China, the dialogue needs to be simplified because most Chinese viewers are not strong English speakers, which means they project subtitles along with the film. The movies need to be easy to translate to do this effectively without losing meaning, and that leads to simplified dialogue.)

The funny irony is that the Chinese audiences generally don't like American films all that much. Mulan bombed in China.
China has a full fledged movie industry that makes movies in Mandarin by Chinese people for Chinese people. It's not a weird cultural hodgepodge between American and Chinese interests.

HBO doesn't want to pay a bunch for this and lose money from it. They're going to try to keep people around after they sign up.

I'm not sure where you're getting the $260 million number from, but Disney hasn't been treating Mulan like the golden goose. I suspect they'll hype the remaining Disney products to extract maximum short term value, just like they did with Mulan, but the ROI is going to be way smaller than they anticipated. Developing blockbusters is probably going to fall away from Disney's long term strategy.
Also, how the hell are American audiences this desperate to fork over money for a crappy remake of Mulan, when it bombed so badly in China?

The theater pub my brother worked at did that as a dodge around being shut down. You can rent the theater to do what you want! And if you bring a DVD we'll show it for you on our big screen! And if you want food, well we can cook some for you too.

Yes, there will always be movies, and plenty of good ones are made on small budgets, and all over the world.
The theater offered you your choice of maybe eight movies, on their schedule, at their high prices, with their restrictions on your behavior, without the ability to pause the film to take a leak, etc, etc.
In home you can choose from a catalog of, what, maybe a million movies. On your schedule, for less than what a theater costs, eating and drinking whatever you want, no obnoxious seatmates, setting the volume at your comfort level, pausable if needed, subtitling options (for hard-of-hearing folks like me, and foreign-film fans like me.)
This, as much as the pandemic, is what depresses theater attendance.

I wrote about this when Martin Scorsese said that Marvel movies weren't real cinema.
I looked at the top ten releases from a year in the 70s and compared them to a couple of years ago.
The 70s year represented 10 different studios and not a single sequel. A couple of years ago represented 4 studios (Disney had 5 of the top 10) and almost all were sequels.
People used to go to the theaters for more than spectacle, but then the studios decided to just chase the spectacle money. Scorsese wanted the system that was happy to take the money he made from Wolf of Wall Street to treat Silence with some kind of respect.

The theater pub my brother worked at did that as a dodge around being shut down. You can rent the theater to do what you want! And if you bring a DVD we'll show it for you on our big screen! And if you want food, well we can cook some for you too.
But they weren't making enough money to pay rent and workers. So they shut down.

I've seen some of that too, and yeah, that's a theater owners desperation move. There's no way $99 a night covers fixed costs for any modern theater. I'm sure they were hoping to make it up on food sales, but with a small party of people, even that won't be enough.

$35 million is great for a streaming, but terrible overall, especially given how badly the movie was panned. I don't think it even made its money back. Disney probably realizes that the era of blockbusters is over, and SJW tripe with shitty production value can be had far more cheaply in many other locations.

They probably made their money back, but you don't invest $200 million in a film to "probably make your money back."
So studios may become gun shy on what they think return on investment maybe.
Add in is this a sign of a successful future, or something that worked because unique and the next film may not pull it off.
If Disney was certain this would work, Soul wouldn't be on regular Disney+ on Christmas Day and Black Widow would have it's digital release date announced.

Objectively, Wonder Woman isn't a great movie. It drags in some places and the ending is terrible. But Gal Gadot is so charming and gorgeous and the movie is so fun and clearly loves the genre (as opposed to most of the Marvel films) that its still entertaining.

Early this morning, in that stage where you're not awake and not quite still asleep either, I was grumbling at God (not sure the Doxology combined with grousing about politics counts as prayer). At that point, I remembered something I hadn't thought about for maybe a decade.
When we lived in Delaware, I had about a 2000-gallon pond that got severely neglected while I went through cancer diagnosis and treatment. When I was able to start caring for the pond again, it was so overgrown Mr. Empire and I had to haul the vegetation out with the station wagon (which fortunately had a towing package).
As I woke up more, I got to wondering: allegory for draining the swamp? Let it get so bad the only possibility is to haul the whole mess out and start over?
I don't know, but I chose to see it as God letting me know He's bringing a cleansing through President Trump and his followers.
(Not a prophet or anything ... just my thoughts on a connection which may mean nothing, but comforts me.)

I've said before, the last time I remember walking into a theater for a first run movie was not this century. The last "blockbuster" I saw was when the ex worked for WB, and we got seats for the premier of Batman & Robin.
I remember we were really excited because we'd seen the greenhouse set at the WB studios, the excitement was palpable. The wait finally over, and we were at a WB premier! Woohoo!
I think there was one guy clapping at the end, it was like The Producers. The crowd walking out was shellshocked. I got in trouble when I kept laughing (I smoked too much back then anyway).
I've tried to watch some of the Marvel things when they're free on TV, I think I've slogged through a few in their entirety, but can't remember a thing about them.
I'm fine if we don't have the classic summer blockbusters. It's possible that hollyweird will take a long, hard look at where they've gone in the past 25 years, but I really doubt it.

I think one of the best is when Daphne's old boyfriend shows up and she pretends she's married to Niles.
Another one is when Bebe has to quit smoking to marry that really rich guy who bought Frazier's radio station. Whoever wrote that one smoked or had smoked in the past and quit. It was spot on.

You don't grasp that indirectly the studios own the marketing companies, so it's just a cash shuffle to keep from paying gross points on profits or taxes to the IRS.

At my first college, we had a big student body and WB sometimes pre-screened movies there to get audience reaction. I went to several crappy movies because they were free and I was broke. The most memorable was the remake of "Alfie," which was just disastrously bad. At the end of the movie, there's this long take of Alfie talking about how he's changed and evolved, with the camera slowly pushing in over a period of like four minutes.
Several of the women in the theater were tearing up, but I couldn't help it. I just started laughing out loud. I couldn't stop. Then, hopefully to the horror of the WB focus group people, that laughter started spreading through the theater...

It was originally around the practice of block booking. The studio owned theaters used their monopoly power to pressure the smaller theaters into doing what they wanted, dictating terms of distribution to an absurd degree.
I think it was a good decision that should have been expanded not repealed. Studios owning their own streaming services is a recipe for the same sort of thing happening again.

One of the benefits of this election, even though it probably won't make any difference in keeping Trump in office, will be exposing a lot of the corruption in Gope.
We've spent much of the past four years arguing with each other about who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.
It will be nice to have more clarity around that.

Yeah, I think that's the balance that Disney management is struggling with right now.
If they release everything on Disney+, then it can all run together. They had very clear designs on separate releases for films and television with Black Widow going to theaters and their handful of TV shows like Loki going to Disney+.
Investors want money now, but management is probably worried about long term effects on their brand management.

I noticed that the last time I was in a theater, its insanely, almost painfully loud.
But notice when you watch movies at home what the sound is like. The music and effects are THIS LOUD and the speech is sort of audible. So to hear the dialog you have to turn things up to the point it hurts to hear the explosions and music.

Which is why in the comics she's not quite human: there's one that shows her as a little girl in... WW2. And this isn't comic book timeline, she was talking to Captain America from the time period (and Logan--Wolverine--incidentally). She also has her stingers, blasters on her wrists which got virtually no play at all in the movies and are pretty critical to her character (and a swingline, to get around with).

She's been there about 5 months. She was fired from Fox because they claim she 'came to work visibly sick in March.' She was sent home, went to the doc, had TWO negative covid tests but wasn't good enough. They let her go.

Governor is the executive branch head, and the State's secretary of state is part of the executive branch, so I assume the power is there to at least stall things. But, the US Constitution says the state legislatures rule on all election law issues in the states, so I'm sure the AZ Leg has some say in how the election must be certified.

Its not clear exactly how much else that affects him, but that's a key part of his character. He's not just some dude with a bow.
But yeah, guys like him and Widow do not belong in groups like the Avengers. I like Hawkeye but he's not in the weight class of the rest of the team, and its painfully obvious. At least Batman has his intellect and gadgets to help him out, he is the world's greatest detective.

The reason they have bipartisan boards is so that people can feel confident in the honesty of the returns. I believe that was literally the argument in passing the rule.

Not sure where people get their information.
Not his girlfriend, she's an actress. Has been in stuff in Russia, and Borat hired her to play his supposed underaged daughter, posing as a reporter for a "conservative" news organization.
So... in case it needs to be said, Rudy never tried to seduce the woman, he went into a bedroom with her to "have a drink," which is probably what I would have done too, if she'd asked me to.
He never took off his pants, and wasn't even close to taking off his pants. What he was doing (upon her suggestion) was trying to remove his microphone, which goes in through the shirt for these types of interviews.
Rudy was on the bed laying back, as he was trying to remove the microphone, and that's when Cohen burst into the room saying "she's too old for you, she's 15!" Or whatever.
At which point Rudy got up, left the room, and IMMEDIATELY called the police.
End of story. Anything anyone else claims about the incident is bullshit.

Movie actors don't do enough stage work anymore, which is apparently HARD work.
Even so, the new wireless mics and such make it easy for stage actors to mumble and still be heard in the cheap seats. So it may not matter.

I can replicate SOME of that at home, but it's a pale imitation at best. So yeah, I can get the same CONTENT but not the same EXPERIENCE.
Of course, I'm in the People's Republic of Maryland and in Montgomery County at that, so no theaters are open. I'd have go over over to Virginia to see anything, and theoretically I'm not supposed to cross state lines except for work within the DC metro area or a medical appointment.
