Gun Thread: Gone to Texas Edition! [Weasel]

vacation scaled.jpg

Welp, another Texas MoMe is in the books. Although I am writing this Wednesday pre-MoMe, I can already report it was a resounding success! Seriously, preparations are well underway in Corscicana, and all we're waiting on now is a Horde of Morons to show up. I am sure there will be a lot of after-action reports beginning Sunday and I will include a review in the next Gun Thread. As I mentioned last week, you're getting mostly re-runs of previous material this week, and maybe next, so please accept my apologies in advance.

Please feel free to discuss the TXMoMe this week, even the non-shooting parts!

So with that, let's take a look below, shall we?

******

Whoa! This is a blast from the past! This is the very first Gun Thread I wrote, from August 26, 2018. What do you think? The style for the thread has certainly changed over time, hasn't it? As I became more comfy writing, my tone certainly became more conversational which I think (hope) is a big improvement from this stilted and dorky effort!

Gun Thread (Special Guest Blogger Weasel) 08/26/2018

1.1 Barney scaled.jpg

So what bullet did Barney keep in his pocket? Why it's none other than our old friend the .38 Special! Introduced in 1898 to replace the underperforming U.S. Service Cartridge in .38 Long Colt during the Philippine-American War, the .38 Special cartridge was for many years standard issue for military units and law enforcement agencies and to this day remains popular with with recreational shooters.

The name of the cartridge itself is somewhat misleading. With a bullet diameter of .357 inches or just over 9mm, the ".38" refers to the approximate diameter of the loaded cartridge including the case. A favorite of hand loaders, a common load sends a 158 gr lead or jacketed bullet towards the target at a muzzle velocity generally under 900 fps, thus falling somewhere between the .380 ACP and 9x19 Para in terms of energy. Higher velocity "+P" loads improve the cartridge terminal ballistic performance, but are not recommended for revolvers not rated for the higher pressures.

Whether using commercial ammunition or target handloads, the .38 is an absolute pleasure to shoot and the mild recoil makes it a great choice for newer shooters developing basic skills and experienced marksmen, alike. The simplicity and safety of revolvers continues to make the .38 Special a popular choice for self defense, as countless gun safes, sock drawers and bedside tables will attest.

Ford vs. Chevrolet
All major manufacturers have at one time or another produced revolvers chambered in .38 Special. By the turn of the 20th century, the already great Colt vs. Smith and Wesson rivalry hit full stride with Double Action/Single Action revolvers and the .38 Special cartridge. Throughout the years, Colt manufactured a variety of models including the Police Positive and Official Police; while Smith & Wesson offered the Military & Police (or M&P, later the Model 10), the K38 (later the Model 15), and others.

Let's just say that Colt and S&W collectors are enthusiastic about their favorite brand with very elaborate conventions held around the country each year. If you aren't already spending enough time on the internet, both are represented by lively and civilized discussion forums with devoted contributors and are great places to browse and have questions answered.

So which one did Deputy Fife carry? Apparently both brands saw action in Mayberry. While the publicity photo above appears to show a Colt, it is reported that for some episodes of the Andy Griffith Show a Smith & Wesson was provided by the prop department.

Colt or S&W? Do you have a favorite?

This Old Gun
Firearms manufactured before the advent of computerized machining techniques are of particular interest to me. Made in an era when assembly was performed by an actual gunsmith or other highly experienced craftsmen, in many cases the final result was a hand-fitted weapon which could arguably be considered a custom firearm by today's manufacturing and production standards.

A big part of the fun in collecting and shooting these old guns, at least for me, is wondering where they have been over the years. A good example is the well used Colt Official Police pictured above. When purchased, I noted "BS Co." engraved on the frame. A little research revealed that BS Company was very likely Bethlehem Steel making it a company guard weapon. I sent to the Colt Archives for more information and learned my revolver was indeed one of a shipment of 25 sent to Bethlehem Steel Company in Lehigh Valley, PA one week after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Just imagine the activity at the steel plant as war was declared!

OK. So I told you guys you were getting ripped off this week! Thanks again for your patience!

Perhaps a rifle of the .22 cal. persuasion. Minimal kick and fun to shoot. Also ammo is relatively inexpensive.

Posted by: Traveling Man Who's Stuck At Home. Thanks China &&&& at October 25, 2020 07:09 PM (R5lpX)

31 If you ever watch old Adam 12 episodes, you will see they are carrying Model 14 Smith and Wessons (K3, 6 inch barrel. These were LAPD specials, modified to fire double action only. With the exceptionally smooth trigger on the Smith and Wessons of that era, this posed no problem for combat accuracy. Also note some are carrying in a "clamshell" holster, where you grip the gun, apply pressure with the trigger finger, and it opens up. Don't know if that is such a swell idea.

45 from today's "first! world problems" thread:

mentioned earlier that I had a lot to say about the Tx MoMe so here it comes.

As things were being planned, Jim comes to me and says 'I have a
script for you to read after the door prizes have been given out because
we are going to give Weasel a very high end rifle". I am thinking WOW
what a great thing. So, I start reading the script with the
description of the rifle and trying to heighten the excitement level
but still knowing, the fix is in.

lin-duh is a master at running the door prize function so I get to
the end of the script and turn to her and say the winner is, assured
that this most awesome gun is going to Weasel. Well, lin-duh pulls out
this piece of paper and I'm looking at Weasel thinking how surprised he
is going to be and she calls out Ben Had. I immediately shout NOOOO,
it supposed to be Weasel so she's laughing her ass off and pulls out
another name and it says Ben Had.

I cannot even begin to express how shocked I was. Through the tears I
hope that I was able to even partially express my Thank You, so I
want to do it now

To each and everyone of you that donated to make this most
generous gift happen I can only say from the bottom of my heart, THANK
YOU, but that can't even begin to express the gratitude that I feel.

Once again, the community that is AoSHQ is the most wonderful,
generous group of people I have ever known and I am so humbled to be a
part of you.

I will say that Operation Horseshoe was a stellar success of which I have been graced by your generosity.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

My WalMart quit selling ammo cause...ammo
bad.
The local sporting goods place is bare shelves and crickets. What was different last weekend when I was there was the line, all properly spaced of course, of people picking up their gun purchases.
Interesting.

79 In revolvers, we like Colt and SW and, in fact Mrs. E collects both. In semi-autos we do own Colts but fined no SWs in our inventory. Having said this, the best and most important firearm you can have is the one in your hand when you need it.

80 I think I'm going to take some of my employees out for some trigger time...

Something I like to do with new shooters is, after the usual safety talk, is to start them with dry firing the weapon a few times so they learn how the trigger breaks. Then load and fire single rounds a few times before loading more than one round. I kind of think this might help reduce the tendency toward flinching that comes from being startled by the first, unexpected, big bang.

97 Re Colt v. Smith and Wesson in .38 Special
Part of the legend comes from matchups of particular revolvers
N-Frame versus New Service (S&W Outdoorsman versus the New Service)
K-Frame (S&W M&P) versus I Frame (Colt Official Police)
J-Frame versus D Frame (S&W Chief's Special versus the Colt Detective).

The other part comes from a rivalry that has lasted from the 1860's until the present day.

I have Smiths and I have Colts in revolvers--both are impressive in their own way. I prefer the New Service to the Outdoorsman because it fits my hand better in .38 Special (strange as it may sound--the .38 Special was a late addition to the Colt New Service and the frame was slightly altered to fit it.) I prefer the M&P in the mid range probably because I learned to shoot for Uncle Sam with the Model 15 and the Official Police that I have is a fixed sight model. I prefer the Chief's Special in the Model 60 rather than a Detective Special because I have a tuned one that has a smooth trigger press for a K-frame, let alone a J-Frame. It also fits my hand like a laser pointer with Hogue grips.

That being said, they are both lines of revolvers that are exceptionally well made especially in the decades prior to Bangor Punta for S&W and the 1960's for Colt.

102 I need to sight in two pistols with a laser boresight. If I am reading a table correctly, the ballistic trajectory from 0 to 25 yards is reasonably flat.

So if I use the laser to sight in at 25 yards I'll be a bit less than .25 inches high at 10 yards.

Range Drop (inches)
0 0.0060
10 0.2239
20 0.1536
30 -0.2158
40 -0.8946

Any common tips to using a basic laser boresight, inserted into the chamber, to zero in a pistol?

Ammo costs are so high I'd love not to spend 200 rounds sighting in two pistols.

I don't think I would bother bore-sighting a pistol with a laser. Just fire and adjust sights. Factors that affect recoil like bullet weight and velocity and grip will determine where the rounds land more than anything, and the desired sight picture may be different than what a bore-sight would give you anyway.

133 Smith and Wesson revolvers are probably the finest revolver ever made. There are bigger, costlier, more artisanly sourced revolvers, but the S and W is the prime revolver. The design, gauging and finish was always the best in the world. It is an old fashioned design, but then again, that is because it works.

Colt makes wonderful automatics, but the revolver is meh.

Went to the range for the first time in over a year today. I'd moved my Vortex red dot over to the 10-22 and the Primary Arms 3-10 scope over to one of the ARs, so I had to zero both. No problems, got them both done in about 30 min.

Pistol skills however... ugh. I guess I did okay with the minute-of-sucking-chest-wound-on-the-criminal-asshole grouping at 25 yards. But just for fun, late in the session I started popping the 100 yard plate with my Ruger MkII (which has made several appearances at the TXMoMe). Got maybe 20-25% hits so I don't feel so bad about that.

22lr at 100 yds makes a really dainty and cute "ding" on the plate.

We had smaller targets than for the safety course and both went 11/25 on the targets. I was mildly happier to get 6 hits in the first 10, but obviously some room for improvement there.

The immediate problem was getting my hands steady which they don't seem to want to do.

181 I'm a S&W guy -- but I've never owned an actual Colt revolver (just Uberti reproductions of their single-action cowboy guns), so I'm going to reserve my final judgement between Smith & Wesson and Colt wheelguns until I hit the lottery and I can afford a Colt Python in 44 magnum.

Speaking of Uberti -- if you're interested in firearms made the old-fashioned way (or closer to it than most), and revolvers, you might want to check out Pietta and Uberti. I have some a couple of lovely examples of the open-top Richards conversion, similar to what Clint Eastwood used in several of his movies. A ton of fun to shoot in 38 special. You can get them on Gunbroker for something like $550 each with shipping.

Posted by: Pastafarian at October 25, 2020 07:36 PM (sgHEm)

182 Good day for reloading supplies. I got a couple thousand large pistol magnum primers locally. Decent price and no haz-mat fees.

I almost never require magnum primers but they serve just as well as standard primers with only tiny differences at the target. (It's the same with magnum percussion caps.) Unless trying for Weasel-level distance and accuracy, these will do the job.

These are the first pistol primers I've seen for some months so they got added to my component stash. I reload for 5 calibers that take large pistol primers so these were a welcome find.

187 134 Kindltot,
Python lovers would like to have a word with you.

I like Smiths, some I like a lot, I like Colts, some of them I like a lot, and then there are Rugers, I have several of them that I like a lot. I have no brand loyalty as I buy used anyway.

Some of the Smiths made during the Bangor Punta era were --dogs and the decision to make a K-frame .357 revolver in a design dating from the 1890's was not the best in the world if you planned on shooting 125 gr. .357 magnum self defense loads in them. Ironically the L frames that replaced those K Frames was on a frame--ta da--just like the Colt Python's I and E frames (Colt Trooper).

Some of the Colts, began to suffer fit and finish issues before Colt went to the new coil spring design in about 1968 which some people like and some dislike.

The major problem with old Colts is that there are few pistolsmiths familiar with the old leaf spring models and they are one of the worst models for DIYers to work on due to extensive handfitting and the absence of a lot of new old stock repair parts.

Smiths have a lot more gunsmiths that can work on them and easier to obtain spare parts for a lot of models.

201 More on the sighting in the two pistols.

I have fired each pistol with many rounds. A quick check with the laser indicated one pistol was off a bit left and the other pistol was so far off on windage and elevation as to be not worth aiming. I rarely fire this second pistol any longer and it is kind of a BUG.

I'd like to get the two pistols zeroed at 25 yards with 115 grain rounds. Then I'd also fire some Hornady Critical Defense rounds to see how that differs with the same zero.

The worst pistol has adjustable sight for elevation and windage and it is off on both. The other pistol is only adjustable on windage but it is only off on windage.

Since I am doing one, I was just going to do both at the same time.

203 Mostly an S&W guy; the J-frames, the 66, the 629 ... ,in real Colt, only the Combat Commander and the Targetsman.
All the other 1911's are other brands, like Auto-Ordnance ...

I have shot Colt revolvers belonging to others, got no prob, but the backward operation of the cylinder latch gives me fear as far as fast reloads, all my instinctive muscle-memory is S&W ... and I have worked that up for 40 years.
In an emergency, sure, I could do it; I have secondary routines for Colts, just like for AK & SKS vs. AR, and probably a pretty good 3rd layer for "operate unfamiliar semiauto weapon n.o.s.", but for sure the primary 1's are Smith, 1911, AR, do those with a brown paper bag over my head.

Basically, start with a good running watch. I went with a garmin. It let me track my heart rate, which was vital for staying in the right zone. Our technique was to run for 3:00, then walk for :30.

We found a training plan online which allowed me to have a full year to train, and stuck to it.

207 Smith and Wesson revolvers are probably the finest revolver ever made. There are bigger, costlier, more artisanly sourced revolvers, but the S and W is the prime revolver. The design, gauging and finish was always the best in the world. It is an old fashioned design, but then again, that is because it works.

Colt makes wonderful automatics, but the revolver is meh.

214 Gun show report from the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.
Seemed like there were plenty of guns for sale, prices a bit higher than a year ago.
Quite a bit of ammo available, more than I see in local retail outlets, but prices were insane. A buck a pop for Lake City 5.56 green tips on stripper clips, eastern European flavors a little cheaper, but still crazy, as was pistol ammo. 22LR available for $40 for a 500 round brick.

As for reloading supplies, a fair amount of bullets and powder for sale, although some types of powder were not available. Primers were non-existent.
I talked to the guy I normally buy reloading supplies from and he said he hasn't been able to get primers for several months and doesn't know when he will again. Fortunately, I stocked up a year ago when they were available, so I'm good for a while. Scored 4 pounds of Bullseye, which should last me a while.

225 Yeah our lovely SAFE act is really kind of a weird law. I saw it in action a while back. I mentioned this before on this site, but last year a I got a knock on the door and was surprised to see a uniformed officer and a plainclothes detective standing there on the stoop. The detective told me that they were there to inform me that my neighbor Mr. X (and they said his name and address) had applied to purchase a handgun. Then they asked me a few questions, all were something to the effect of whether he'd ever shown any aggressive or violent tendencies towards anybody in the neighborhood, yada yada. It was just weird. It was obvious the cops weren't too happy about doing this either, it just about oozed out of them. The uniform cop almost seemed embarassed, and the detective seemed annoyed like his whole attitude was "why are they making me do this."
I mean, I suppose it makes some sense to ask if somebody buying a gun is the neighborhood psycho who's threatened to kill everybody on the block. That would be a red flag, so sure, I almost get that part. But don't you have to have a background check anyway? If so what's the point of just randomly asking your neighbor about you? And honestly it seemed more like the process is designed less to weed out psychos than to sort of gun shame you into not applying for the permit. They make it clear we're going to go to all your neighbors like "ALERT THIS PERSON IS BUYING A GUN OMG!!!"

My neighbor is cool and I told them as much, I hope he got the permit. But I wonder what happens if I said he's a jerk or something? What if I just didn't like him or didn't like guns and lied to them about him being shifty?Does that mean you don't get the license? So yeah, weird and kinda creepy.

I have heard rumors that the best 357 hunting pistol is simply to act as a hunting guide and have Mrs. E. wield the 357.

However, it may be difficult to bag any trophies using that technique - I hear that most dangerous animals turn tail and run if she enters the woods with her 357.

294 231 No problem kindltot, I like a good enfield myself but prefer the No. 4 to the No. 1 due to age and wisdom (peep sights easier to see than open sights at my age). But I like Mausers, Springfields, etc. as well. I even like the ungainly Mosin if you do some minor mods to the trigger--the safety fuhgeddaboutit.

To me, each firearm is an individual unto itself and when they have a bit of age on them, they get even quirkier.

I absolutely like a Colt for slow fire single action shooting. If a Colt is timed properly, the Colt has a bank vault lockup just before the trigger pops. A Colt typically has a bit of stacking (unless you get someone to alter the v spring) just before letoff which some shooters do not care for. To me, as long as a revolver trigger is smooth, a bit of stacking just lets me know that I am close to release. A tuned Colt is very nice in single action and not bad in Double. A K-frame Smith, on the other hand, typically has a better tuned trigger in double action with a nice single action with no stacking if done right.

Ironically, the best triggers on a revolver that I have are a) Ruger GP 100 which is an early one with so many rounds down the bore that it is butter smooth on the trigger and the big flywheel cylinder makes it effortless to shoot well DA, b) a Smith and Wesson pre Model 15--great DA and single action trigger, and c) a Colt New Service pre WWII.

Posted by: Jewells45 at October 25, 2020 08:13 PM (nxdel)

302 First off, I really want to be one of the shooters at the MoMe, but I'm too chickenshit to ask anybody during the event.

Now, for my MoMe story. I was headed there up I-45 around about Centerville, and I had seen the dark clouds in the distance and although the rain was still light, I knew I was going to be in heavy rain soon. One of the vehicles up ahead hit their brakes and swerved to the right and I had just started wondering if there was slow traffic up ahead when I noticed what looked like a house in the left lane of the freeway.

As I got closer to it, it kept seeming to get smaller, and when I noticed the hay and the poultry netting I realized that what I was looking at was chicken coop right there in the freeway. Who ever's truck it had dropped off of had just left, which seems strange to me. If you were hauling a chicken coop, wouldn't you notice when it wasn't there any more? Strange.

The door prizes were fun and the grand prize was the most awesome thing I've seen in recent memory.

312 1 final note:
preparing bigtime for Upcoming Sportiness in view of the unstoppable TrumpTrain ... this pretty much means checking that reloads are packed with every gun, 40 - 50 rounds minimum + loaded mags in the case; deploying all of the plastic knuckles, telescoping batons, knuckle gloves, that I have been quietly buying over the past year, at least 1 set per car ... also gasmasks, after 9/11 I invested heavily in Warsaw Pact equipment, 2 per car.
Plausibly deniable weapons: 2 to 6 foot lengths of rebar, also cans of soup to throw.
Pro tip: Hoam Despot sells a knit sock thing in the paint dept. for spraying, that serves all the functions of a ski mask without being quite so blatant.

Despite living out among the cows & corn, I am unable to shake the feeling that war IS interested in ME ... & Mrs Eez too, so I offer these suggestions for my moar urban brethren & sistren.

Hopefully in a week I will be laughing about all this preparation, just like I did 1Jan2000 ... can I get a hallelujah ?

Posted by: Bob the Bilderberg at October 25, 2020 08:20 PM (qc+VF)

330 201 WarEagle82, finally found your reply.

Here is mine--on pistols, during the normal ranges up to about 25 yds, the differences in shooting style, barrel twist, etc. can make more differences in POI versus POA (point of aim) than anything including ammo, bullet weight, and windage. If you shoot from a proper pistol rest, does the pistol shoot to its point of aim at 25 yards--(POI=POA)--if it does not, a laser bore sight, unless maybe one of those laser ammo deals that records shots, might not give you any less waste on ammo moving the sights than actually firing from a rest.

I have seen multiple times where a different guy shoots the same firearm and it shoots true to POI=POA that the other person cannot get to do well.

If you shoot a 7-10 round group from a rest, coupled with a 25 yd zeroing target (has grid on it already along with bull), then that should be enough to adjust both windage and height.

If your shots are not clustering, then something else is going on.

Rifles are simply different critters zeroing to handguns due to distances and velocity/bullet weight.

Seriously, I wouldn't know who to ask. I don't know how it works and I don't know how it works and I'm not sure who I should talk to or when would be the appropriate time.

That's kind of why I'm talking about it now. It's not just right after the 2020 TxMoMe has ended, it's also before the 2021 TxMoMe planning has begun.

I grade our effort out at a 90% (a couple of cooking bobbles) but, overall, my wife did a wonderful job getting the house set up.

My oldest niece was wonderful with her grandmother and grandmother was thrilled to meet her latest great grand child.

It was a great afternoon.

Now, range report: I managed to shoot High Power yesterday, with the trusty M1. Off hand, I was bad, no two ways about it.

But, in the seated and prone, using the sling? I did darn well. In fact, the sling was set up well enough, prone, that, after recoil, the rifle pretty much returned to position with the proper sight picture.

A great weekend all the way around.

Weasel,

Do you still have the prize description that Ben Had read for the raffle? You could post a picture on the next Gun Thread, along with a picture of the actual prize. (I assume most Morons have installed "drool-proof" keyboards.)

P.S. Remember that pictures take up more space - since you definitely deserve a break after all of the work you put in for the MoMe.

More than worth, it though, because Mom was thrilled.

471 This was my first MoMe, and me being Texan, it had to be the TX MoMe. It was a great time, I must tell you.

To Weasel, Jim, et al, one of the highest compliments I can ever pay to somebody is "I learned something from you." Well, y'all were both clinics at the gun ranges. I got some ideas for my current rifle and any I might pick up down the road, and I got to try out some different handguns (which is always a good thing). Maybe I can't apply all I learned right away, but one day they will be applied, and I can say I got my knowledge here.

And I always figured the Horde to be a friendly, good-natured lot and that is exactly what I saw at the MoMe. Can I make it back next year? Well, if I don't, it won't be for lack of effort, I will tell you that!

477 456, Gun trusts are something that you really need to consult a lawyer experienced in them because some not done right have been ruled invalid which can create some legal issues. ATF also can answer some questions as well as they have a FAQ question page that can answer some common ones.

Technically, all the people in a trust do not have to be in the same state from what I understand but all members of the trust now must be fingerprinted and have a background check which pretty much precludes using an address that might be loosely affiliated with yourself because of said background check.

480 Fired an NRA standard 5 groups of 5 shots each at 100 yards, at the range on Wednesday with my Marlin XT-22 .22lr bolt gun. Ammo was CCI subsonic 40 grain hollow point. Average group size for my 5 each 5 shot groups was 1.43MOA. Smallest group was 1", and none of them reached 2" in size. That is the best I've ever shot with that rifle. As 22 Plinkster says: any day you shoot a 1 MOA group with a .22lr, is a day to celebrate.

509 If I ever get around to apply for the pistol course and get through the waiting period, I was thinking of getting a 9 millimeter pistol. Mostly because I fired one several times on the range back when I was in the Air Force back in the day, and I remember it being pretty simple to operate and handle, and I did fairly well on the targets with it. Although I hear they don't have the "stopping power" gun people talk about. The AF had just transitioned from using .45's to the 9 mil at the time, and my buddy, who had also joined the AF and was a Security Policeman said all the cops hated the new pistols and wanted the .45s back.

I'm repeating every word of thanks above, to Rancher Bob, Jennifer, Weasel, Eremero, and Special Thanks to Hogmartin, Lady L and again to Weasel. The last three being the co-conspirators with me in launching the Operation Horseshoe "enterprise".

And late thanks to Lin-Duh for being the PERFECT Mistress of Ceremonies throughout the drawing, and Springing the Trap PERFECTLY!

I count my blessings every day to be allowed to work with such an amazing group of people, AND THEN to get to mingle with even MORE amazing people over the course of the weekend.

The Tx Mo Meet is my Christmas, other than for celebrating the Birth of Christ, that is.

But it really is my favorite holiday.

601 I know now that my low/left error pattern with the XD (or other semi pistols) is entirely me, more an issue of straight smooth trigger pull than too much finger on the trigger (generic explanation given on those diagnostic targets).

It's not much of an error, usually, so I'm kind of at peace with it. And if I concentrate/focus and go very deliberately, I can put it right in the middle of the bullseye (7-8 yds) consistently. I notice during steel matches (only kind I really enjoy) I do just fine, and a tiny bit of focus is all I need.

605 100 rounds of 9mm this morning, will load my primed brass for 30-06 tomorrow or Tuesday.

One of my M1s needs to be taken down entirely, and I need to disassemble/inspect/re-assemble the rear sight, the elevation aperture is slipping. Might get a new elevation knob + pinion, don't feel like troubleshooting a small thing like that for weeks.

Blake - any references you've used for sling use with the M1? I'm aware of the WWII training materials, need to review them. I don't do High Power matches but do want to greatly improve my off-hand accuracy.

Knowing your own proclivities IS the Key.

I've done very little target shooting over the years. I was 'trained' in how to hit someone at 20 or less feet.

I KNOW that if I think, my first bullet will be aimed high, just like most combat shooters throughout history.

So, I PURPOSELY aim low.

Because I KNOW that when the stress hits, it will then be on target.

(thing I learned of all places, on the paintball field).

Satellites other than GEO satellites move across the sky. Fairly rapidly, in low Earth orbit. Did anyone at the MoMe witness the string moving?

What we saw most likely was a number of StarLink sats, but I cannot account for their seeming lack of motion above the MoMe location.

I recall seeing quite a few more lights than that which moved smoothly from roughly north to south before disappearing one by one behind the earth's shadow. I first saw them at maybe 45 degrees off the horizon and they disappeared roughly at the zenith. They were moving relative to the fixed stars the whole time, at a rate that was similar to all the other low-orbit satellites I've seen.

660 Late to the gun thread. Because family reasons.

But I'll post a range report for those keeping track at home and then do some readin' upthread. You never know what miscreants might be hanging about.

Put 100 rounds of steel cased ammo through the CZ P-07 DAO. Half Tula, half Wolf. Worked fine and the groups were very very good. But that might be mostly the pistol. Had 3 failures to ignite out of 100 rounds, but all went off on second trigger pull. And that is the pistol.

Never fiddle with factory settings.

Also put about 36 rounds of .30 carbine through my 'new' Ruger Blackhawk. Gun is easy enough to shoot, though muzzle blast can be impressive. Groups are...good for me with revolvers. They just don't fit my hand well. Sights may be a bit high left. I don't mind it shooting high but I'll see about moving it right a bit. The Korean milsurp ammo is damn hard to eject, you have to really snap the ejection rod down hard. Don't have the problem with Priv Partizan .30 carbine ammo. Found a bit of rust on the gun. Not bad but will have to work on buffing it out.

Also got my G44 back from Glock. They replaced the extractor and the gun shoots as good as new except....someone wanged the hell out of the polymer front sight. Looks like it was cut or sliced with something. I'll see about sending it back once again to the the sights replaced, maybe with steel. Sigh. This gun is semi-cursed. Very tight groups though and double taps were easy and accurate as well at 7 yards.

All in all, a good day at the range.

661 Ha, ha! I'm reading a flyer from our GOP incumbent state assemblyman. His Dem opponent is a 22 year old who just graduated from Yale. Somehow the GOP got it's hands on his college application essay. It charmed the admissions office at Yale because he shit all over his hometown. "There's nothing special about it." It's low crime and boring white people live "typical" lives on quiet streets. "The chances of catastrophe are basically non-existent and bad things simply don't happen. I don't want this security blanket because it's a limit on being extraordinary."

So - vote for me so we can become more like Portland and San Fran. To hell with this boring safe community!

Honestly, I thought my childhood neighborhood was boring too when I was 17. So I moved away after college. It didn't occur to me to move back and run for office. But this kid went to Yale and now has even more wokeness and so wants power over the dull safe people he grew up around because he's much smarter than them!

No, that was the ammo, unless your fiddling included some chicanery with some really bad aftermarket upgrades.

And why send the Glock back to the factory for a front sight replacement? It takes 5 minutes to replace the front sight on a Glock.

You do realize that Google reads and records EVERY email transiting their system. It's also designed to scan those stored emails for any term they want.

If you are thinking that old "you have nothing to fear if you're innocent" bromide, your naivete' is touching. Search for the videos "Don't talk to cops" parts 1 and 2 .

A majority, possibly even a very large majority, of Googles employees are leftist, and their antipathy to guns is "normal". Giving gmail your business is, as they say, like strolling into a biker bar wearing a mini and a see through blouse. Of course it isn't right, but don't be surprised at the outcome.
