You just need to use your imagination. The two parallel rocks are the bewbs, the rock at the top is the neck, the dense foliage beyond that is the head and hair.

Bewbs can be found anywhere. Just ask the guys who named the Grand Tetons...

50 Grimshaw had a huge talent for capturing the nature of light in a landscape. Usually those are urban areas, which we've seen on the thread before. This nature scape uses that ability with light to bring out all the detail and subtle colors of the plants and rocks. I'm not always a fan of very realistic painting beyond the talent of the artist, but this painting uses the near realism to let the viewer enjoy the variety of colors and textures in the woods. Highly effective and, to me, appealing.

His Wiki page says he was interested in photography. I wonder if this scene was inspired by his desire to capture nature beyond what photography could achieve at that time.

109 Sheesh, I'm becoming the new willow, From last thread:

Over at Powerline, John Hinderacker makes this point: political polls as news stories are a very recent phenomenon If you had not seen any news stories about polling, how much of a chance would you give Biden of winning the election?

That is what is driving me nuts. There are the polls and there is what we see with our own eyes. I have never seen crowds of people turn out to form car and boat parades when the candidate himself is not even present. That wasn't done for Reagan or Clinton or Obama. And they're doing it even deep in hostile territory - like LA and NY.

Yet Trump is supposed to be headed for Carter in '80 political annihilation? It's making me crazy.

Posted by: Donna&&&&&V at October 26, 2020 09:53 AM (HabA/)

110 At this point will Biden even be able to give a speech on election night? It'll be late in the hour. That's well past his bedtime.

Hillary was too hammered on jack daniels to speak but she at least could have and would have had she known the loss was coming (and certainly if she won).

It's a legit thought that Biden might not be able to appear live on a stage, win or lose. He might be pre-recording concession and victory speeches this week.

117 I'm not a math major nor a statistician, so someone else can please check my figures, but...

If it is true that roughly 50% of Democrats will vote early/by mail this year,

and if it is true that Democrats are expected to nab about 25mm votes before election day,

then the Democrats can expect about 50mm total votes.

Meanwhile, if it is true that roughly 25% of the GOP will vote early/by mail this year,

and if it is true that the GOP are expected to nab about 15mm votes before election day,

then the GOP can expect about 60mm total votes.

Which means that in order for Biden to make up the deficit and win, he needs roughly two independent votes for every one Trump wins.

126 117 I'm not a math major nor a statistician, so someone else can please check my figures, but...

Posted by: Shenanigans at October 26, 2020 09:54 AM (ZR7kf)

Pretty much.

And CBS came out with a polls that showed more than half of Biden's voters had already voted (which is probably where you're getting your number).

I really get the sense that this is not going to be a particularly close election.

134 I just learned something interesting while reading some of the Epoch Times reporting on the CCP's observance of the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War.

They mention a Chinese expat in Canada who discovered a memorial to the Canadians lost in the Korean War in a park near his home. He was puzzled by this because he had been taught his entire life that the Korean War was a story of the Chinese coming to the rescue of their Korean cousins against the United States.

I reckon that if you ask most Americans to name the UN allies who went to war against Kim Il Sung when he violated the 38th parallel, most could not. I could not. But most *could* tell you that there was an allied coalition that went to Korea to stop the incursion of the communist trilateral (The DPRK, Red China and the USSR). Apparently in China, they don't even talk about the fact that an oppositional alliance existed. It is just America, and Red China's defeat of America.

Overall, you have a total pool of voters. That's obviously not fixed and could grow, also portions of that pool could voter differently than last time.

You have a portion of those voters who will vote early.

You have Republicans who show up more on Election Day.

Here's the question: what is the evidence against the argument that more people (from the overall pool) are simply voting early and ergo you will not have as many voters on Election Day to make up the difference?

==========

One piece is about high propensity voters. If you've voted in each of the last four general elections, you're more likely to vote in general.

Democrats and running through their high propensity voters already. Republicans are not, leaving a very large pool of assured votes that have yet to be counted.

There is going to be a massive shift towards early voting, for sure, but Republicans are still going to come out in higher numbers than Democrats on election day.

186 Something odd I have noticed in this election, that is different from prior election years. I live in a western suburb of Denver. It is somewhat loosely conservative (by Denver Metro standards, anyway). I am registered unaffiliated.

I have gotten a crush of campaign materials, and virtually all of it from Republicans or Trump. Very little Biden in the direct mail. I had canvassers* knock on my door every day last week. At least 85% of the SMS campaign materials that have hit my phone have been from Trump or other Republicans or conservative groups.

This is new to me. I usually get a smattering of campaign materials and have never to my knowledge had a canvasser show up.

* I am assuming they are canvassers. I have been on the phone every time my doorbell has wring and thus have not answered the door - as a result, I don't know which group they're with.

Spite may also come into play. That's what happened in 2004: It was clear Bush was going to win Ohio but Kerry's camp refused to concede until the next day so Bush could become the first 2-term president never to give a victory speech on election night.
Let's say Trump is obviously winning next Tuesday night. I could see the Biden camp refusing to concede that night, but Trump being Trump he'd give his victory speech anyway, and the media going insane about Trump's disrespect.

194 Many people who are frustrated with the
masking simply want to return to mask-free normality. It isn't so simple
anymore. Asking a person to take off his mask now means asking him to
take off all that the masking has come to mean. Removing it means
removing one's safety, one's sense of belonging, and one's values. This
is probably why face mask-wearing has even become an addiction
in a
developed country like Japan. They were originally used to help with hay
fever, but are now used all year round for whatever reason.

So very, very sick.
But , yay MAGA masks and patriotism or something...

195 139 On early voting, here's my math question.

Posted by: Marcus T at October 26, 2020 09:57 AM (VpIIl)

The best hope here is the GOP's significant advantage in voter registration in key swing states increases the overall pool voting Election Day.

My concern is that if that Election Day pool moves into the early voting pool, you may not get the Election Day turnout you're expecting.

They're basing their expectations on the percentage of Trump voters who say they've already voted, which is much lower than for Biden. Working with a denominator like that can lead to wide swings in results with small changes though.

And Mao paid back Stalin for all the hardware, and thrust the Chinese peasants deeper into penury for close to a decade to do it.

216 nothing about this election makes any sense...unless it does.

If Biden wins it will be because the only thing that was right were the top-line of the polls. Every other metric was wrong. It would mean Trump was the most universally beloved-by-his-party candidate to lose in a landslide...ever. It would mean that 95% of the GOP (roughly 30% of the electorate, let's say) supported him, but all of the Democrats and 2/3 of Independents rejected him en mass.

That has never happened before. When a President is as unpopular as this one is supposed to be, he would see bleeding of support from his own party.

If that's the case, it would make sense why Biden is basically doing nothing for the final week of the election. He's barely campaigning, barely leaving the house, barely making a push in so-called swing states. He's just running out the clock, something that has happened many times in the past (Clinton in 96 and Regan in 84 for example), but never without at least the appearance of a vigorous campaigner going about trying to earn the vote.

So either this is a once in a lifetime election where nothing makes sense.

OR

It makes perfect sense: The media polls are wrong and Trump is headed for a massive win, the Democrats know that because they see the raw numbers of the early vote as well as their internal polls, and they are keeping Biden away in the hopes that they can mitigate the damage, hold the house, and maybe win the Senate.

I had to read all the way through to understand what Johnson was getting at - it's as if he was being deliberately obtuse. (and for that reason I think it's a poorly written piece) He ends up saying it looks like Trump might be ahead, but he wastes a lot of space getting there.

By saying "no sampling bias" he means that specifically the pollsters are probably using the correct percentage of R, D, and I in their mathematical models, in his opinion.

But what he ignores is that if the Bias is built into the system in such a way that it is a systemic failure and polling, in general, is broken beyond repair, there is no way you could ever see it. If you could identify it, it could be fixed, but the entire theory behind polling is broken. It can't be fixed.

This is known. Someone is doing the redacting. They aren't redacted on the hard drive image, lots of people have that now. But, hey, it's illegal to look at it if you aren't a journalist or something.

Ask Cuomo.

On a scale of 1 to WTF these texts rate a SSDD.

These texts are not a lot more confirmatory of "Joe knew about Hunter inappropriate behavior" stuff than the original one.

Hunter is complaining to other people that people are saying this about him - which is what the original text on this topic said.

The new piece is that he is complaining that Dr. Jill is one of those people.

This isn't really evidence - its a crackhead who sounds paranoid. There isn't a confirmatory "yes son your mother is saying these things I will get her to stop" response.

243 Cannibalization? The evidence suggests it is mostly cannibalization, but you save some resources on GOTV efforts. That is strong early voting doesn't imply corresponding strong voting later, they vary inversely.
-------------------------------
There's an AP article today stating that the early vote is skewing young and basically in line with R v D normalities. Lots of new and infrequent voters.

They're expecting close to 150M votes which would be huge but I'm not convinced. I think we're just seeing behavior changes. A lot of people are going to vote early and they're able because they work from home now.

He talks about there being no sampling bias in the Polls??? does he have a room temperature IQ

Posted by: Ghost Of Ruth Buzzi Ginsberg at October 26, 2020 10:06 AM (Iuc1g)

Posted by: Tom Servo at October 26, 2020 10:12 AM (Kpl3J)

Skimming it, it doesn't appear he clarifies what he means by sampling bias. If he's using it in the conventional fashion, asserting that the samples are being taken in a manner that wouldn't introduce additional bias from the pollster, that could very well be true. An "unbiased" sample of All Americans, Registered Voters, and likely voters favors Democrats the most on the left and the least on the right. An "unbiased" sample doesn't imply representativeness, which is what the modeling stage tries to correct for.

It is understood that the sample taken is not representative and that the model is a form of guessing. I don't think there's a way to guarantee a representative sample.

Hate to say it, but polling.

The voters have been consistent in telling all the pollsters (good ones and bad ones) their voting intentions. 60% of Dems say they will vote before election day. 60% of GOP say they will vote on election day. 56% of Ind say they will vote on election day.

Based on these numbers and actual early vote counts, the Dems need a heavy break toward Biden among the Ind vote to win. They are well below their target numbers in FL, NC, and MI. In Texas, they are being outright killed.

That's what doesn't make sense, though. If Biden has it so much in the bag that he can literally stop campaigning a week before the election, then that means he has the support of 2/3 of independents that see him no longer campaigning a week till the vote.

Now what people will say is "Democrats aren't voting for Biden; they're voting against Trump, so keeping Biden locked away means he won't turn anyone off."

The problem with that theory is, it only motivates 35% of the electorate.

There are a LOT of independants/non-political people that see Joe Biden basically too frail to campaign in the final days. They will not be motivated to vote for him. In fact they're likely to vote against him (as opposed to just sitting it out) for that very reason.

The only way their "keep Joe hidden to mitigate damage" strategy makes sense if it's not about winning the White House, but the Congress.

And considering Trump's push to win house seats in New York, Cali, Illinois, etc, it seems that their internals are pointing him to a similar thought: The presidental election is essentially over; now it's a fight for congress

331 Since we are discussing it, I'll repost my state of the race from this morning...

My view of the state of the race:

As always, some caveats. We are still a week away from election day. The MSM could still find video of Trump torturing a puppy and run it wall to wall. I am giving you analysis of what the data says now, this could change and could change to Biden's benefit. Also, a very important point is that polls are indicating that 60% of GOP voters plan to vote next weekend or on election day. These voters have to actually show up. Don't be blaming me if this assumption is wrong. This is what the voters have been telling the pollsters. The MSM is trying to gin up another Covid scare now to try to discourage election day turnout. I would not be surprised if some Dem governor, like in North Carolina, tries to close the polls on election day because "they aren't safe"

Swing states that Trump is winning:
Arizona - recent polling shows Trump with a strong lead, McSally was lagging but a couple new polls show that she has pulled ahead. McSally was hurt by the ACB nomination, the Dem attack about Obamacare did cause some damage.
Iowa - Trump is up about 5 or 6, everyone considers it over there
Ohio - Trump is up about 7 or 8, everyone considers it over, Biden killed himself there with fracking
Texas - Insulting that we have to even talk about this, thanks Nate Silver. Trump is blowing away early voting, he will win by 10 at least
North Carolina - I don't have good polls, but indications are that Tillis is way up now and Trump will easily win the state. I'm relying on registration changes, early votes, and campaign actions.
Florida - Trump will win. Democrats are seriously lagging GOP in early vote targets. The increase in polling strength on the Atlantic coast and in Miami-Dade are insurmountable for the Dems.
ME-2, NE-2 - Trump will win both of these, polling shows both to be solid for him.

Adding in the red states, this puts Trump at 260 Electoral Votes, 10 shy of what he needs.

Looking at the rest of the rust belt/swing states:
Michigan (16) - Trafalgar says Trump is leading by 2, James is winning the Senate right now, Whitmar is deeply unpopular
Pennsylvania (20) - The biggest threat for mail-in vote fraud actually stealing a state. Trump is over performing in the NE fracking country. Biden needs Bucks County, but the local "Trump Chumps" won't let him even campaign. If Trump wins by over 1% the state probably can't be stolen
Wisconsin (10) - Early vote is very good for GOP, blue counties are underperforming. Recent polling says the state is tied
Minnesota (10) - Good early voting for GOP in the Iron Range and Minneapolis suburbs. Recent poll says GOP senate candidate is up 1
New Hampshire (4) - Trump made a stop there, they seem to think it is in play
Nevada (6) - Early vote is looking very strong for Democrats and Nevada voting rules allow votes to come in 14 days after the election. However, Trafalgar thinks the demographics of the state put it in the play for Trump. The only way that works is if a lot of those Dem votes are crossovers.

Bottom line is Trump has 5 routes to victory, Biden has 1.

Republicans need to get on board and start pounding early voting the way Democrats do.

Also, I don't think the Democratic Party is nearly as strong as it purports to be. There's simply too much fraud keeping much of it afloat. If Trump has an aim to attack vote fraud this year through a series of lawsuits after the election, we could end up seeing a fair bit of that infrastructure torn out.

Since Trump is a big fan of revenge, it's something I could very easily see him doing.

This has my vote. It might end up in a shooting war anyway, but economic war would be my preferred opening salvo, in the hopes of avoiding Armageddon.

But it is high-risk, and the risk increases with every delay. had this been dealt with in the 90s, it would have been cheap. But instead, the establishment - and Bill Clinton himself, with his cabal - went all in on *not* confronting the problem.

Now it is harder. It might be impossible. But I think economic war is the right move. Something along the lines of:
- A minimum 50% tariff on Chinese goods, and up to, say, 500%, to be phased in over five years.
- Embargo key supplies where possible (we let them get Belt and Road off the ground, so that is much harder now).
- Provide massive benefits to repatriating industries - regulatory exemptions (for those that aren't just eliminated - another key component), tax breaks, whatever.
- Apply pressure - including similar economic measures - to allies to get on board.
- Formally recognize Taiwan.
- Pursue detente with North Korea if they agree to abandon the CCP.
- Go hard at the Quadrilateral Alliance (Japan, Australia, India, United States) and step up maneuvers and naval presence in the Indo-Pacific.
- Force all US operators affiliated with Chinese firms that have a CCP connection (spoiler alert: it's basically all of them) to register as foreign agents (there is pending legislation from Tom Cotton to do just this).
- Defund the US component to all international organizations that are dominated by Red China, regardless of affiliation. Pressure our allies to do the same.
- Forbid student visas from Red China if the student has any connection whatsoever to the CCP.
- Forbid academic information sharing between American universities and Red China.

408 kallisto, finally starting to see online echoes/confirmation of what has been astonishing me for a few months now.

Namely, shock that the disastrous (and completely unjustified/unscientific) closure of schools has *not* generated any backlash, even where private schools are operating while public remain "remote".

This is the greatest educational blow to children in modern history.

This is by far the most damaging, actual "disparate impact" in terms of damage to households of differing economic and social status, from public policy, in generations.

And ..... crickets. I see some kind "recall" thing starting in Fairfax County, one of the most idiotic of the many stupid suburbs of DC (referring to the effective idiocy of the people there now). Locally ..... the school board thought this was a good time to modify/muddle/destroy grading and discipline systems - of course to fight "racism" (!!!!).

The bonfire is raging, and there is scant evidence that many households even care.

And this is on top of the Russian-like submission to ruinous, utterly pointless "public health" tyranny, 225 days into the 15 day curve-flattening.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at October 26, 2020 10:34 AM (XJipD)

I think that the general consensus among the political crowd (and this includes Republicans) for over a year now and up until a few weeks ago was that the best the GOP could hope for was a 50-50 split, with there being many more GOP seats that Democrats had a good chance to flip (AZ, CO, ME, SC, NC, MT, IA, for example), than Democrats had the risk of losing (AL, for example). Thus, complacency.

So it's almost too late now to start beating the drum.

Looking briefly, it seems like there are 6 possible pickups in CA.

10, 39, 45, 48, 49, and 50.

All are even or lean Republican slightly with Democratic representatives (except for 50 which is vacant).

So, if Republicans are more enthused and more likely to vote than Democrats, and if the CA GOP's ballot harvesting operation is up and running (it is), then these are distinct possibilities.

475 Sad news, everybody. The Hildebeest is worried.

Former Secretary of State and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said the thought of President Trump winning reelection makes her "literally sick to my stomach" on a podcast released Monday.

"I can't entertain the idea of him winning, so let's just preface it by that," Clinton told journalist Kara Swisher while a guest on her podcast. "Well, because it makes me literally sick to my stomach to think that we'd have four more years of this abuse and destruction of our institutions, and damaging of our norms and our values, and lessening of our leadership, and the list goes on."

487 jhawk, I think 2 (in Orange County).

Even Trump, very very very belatedly, has started whining about the idiocy of mass asymptomatic testing. Several times in the past week.

As I've said for months, the entire framework in which almost every aspect of this entire COVID thing is discussed/"understood" by the country is false. And national institutional failure has been key to it.

Now there's Atlas, literally a lone voice, biting the ankles of the task force and CDC, who apart from a pathetically limp flash of rationality on school reopening remain completely off the rails (as Atlas aptly put it - though he was referring to the country in general).

Trump will likely survive it but it has become an entirely new dimension of things urgently requiring a fix.

538 TJM, as you know NH and NV have been on my most likely pick-up list, along with MN, for months.

All based on reasonable fundamentals, and margins of loss in 2016, not polling of any kind.

At this point the enthusiasm for Trump is beyond anything I've seen in my life (I think on this, the constant massive anecdata of parades and rallies and other things is substantive).

Whether Joe's unprecedented invisible non-campaign, and presumably some leakage of actual news around the media barriers, will produce a disastrous Dem vote remains to be seen.

But the combination, well, you know.

I like to play with the idea that maybe she's the "sane" one. That once she married into the family, they told her some of the secrets, including the proclivities of Andrew, and other assorted slimy behavior.

So when she told her husband "I'm not living anywhere near those people anymore," she was trying to keep her son from their grasp.

I've seen people argue that there is nothing wrong with them doing what they've done, anyone who officially complains via diplomatic channels is the person with the problem, and any average person who thinks it's a problem is a H8tr.

Thing is, ALL polling if flawed. Even for pollsters who are honestly trying to get a factual result. Who answers the phone for some pollster in 2020? That crap worked in1962 maybe. Not now. There's no way to get an accurate idea of what anybody is thinking via polling. Not via phone, which seems to be the only communication they trust. With call ID and blocking there's no reliable way to get in touch with anybody anymore and very few want to talk to some data company. Pollsters are irrelevant dinosaurs desperately trying to save their failing industry and their paychecks.By the way, the reason professional "Pollsters" eschew things like a simple direct online poll, which they claim is "unscientific" is because A. that will give a very accurate result without their help, thus eliminating their fake jobs and B. they can't skew the data with "weighting" and all that crap to create the desired propaganda.

I find it impossible to believe, especially after 2016, that they've done it out of confidence.

Posted by: rhomboid at October 26, 2020 11:18 AM (OTzUX)

606 Regarding polling "surges"--there is a conflict in the research whether polling numbers actually reflect the underlying vote distribution or "feelings about events around the respondent".

Imagine a daily tracking poll of your significant other in a relationship--it would chart the ups and downs of feelings but not necessarily predict a breakup of a relationship unless the feeling became a predictable result by not changing much day to day (love, hate, or indifference). In addition, such polling would also pick up whatever events are going through two peoples' lives and thus the dynamics of the relationship will be affected by those external events.

The other position is that races are more or less stable and turn on underlying factors outside of day to day pollling such as economic growth, unemployment rates, past election voting behavior, and so on. See Helmut Northpol or Lichtman for that approach.

And for those going 'Lititz?! What's that?', it's the Lancaster airport.

Why not simply poll people face-to-face? Stop a
person the street, say, "Hi. I'm Joe Schmoe from Saunter Polls (shows
card). Can I buy you a coffee, and ask a few political questions?"

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 26, 2020 11:19 AM (lw9IV)

That's even worse. I don't talk to strangers on the phone. I certainly won't talk to some rando stopping me on the street with a clipboard. Especially in this political climate, nobody wants to share who they are voting for in public at the local coffee shop.

Isn't it normally a union day off=holiday?

Posted by: A dude in MI at October 26, 2020 11:20 AM (/6GbT)

I don't know what part of the government controls holidays, senate or house. But I've read that the republicans have been trying to make election day a national work holiday forever, and dems block it. For obvious reasons.

621 580 agent cooper,

There is a way to error check phone and internet surveys but it is ungodly expensive. You have to actually knock on doors to do it and also verify things like if a respondent claimed that they already voted whether they actually did so. Overreporting of voting status is a problem and has pretty much sunk the National Election Survey (ran every election since the 1950's) as the percentage claiming that they voted (but they did not as verified after teh election) was around 20 percent the last time that I checked.

Campaigns can afford this, media polling simply cannot due to cost and time pressure--they simply are not set up to do verification steps.

My guess behind some of this is that the pollsters are trying to incorporate early and absentee voting to figure out likely voters. Right now that skews Dem due to the factors already mentioned above--Rep. prefer not to mail ballots in and turn up either in person early voting or on Election Day.

If a pollster incorporated mail in ballot and early characteristics into their weighting as to likely voters--they would get a pro-Dem skew to their data.

622 607 Cost AOP, as explained above. People in the streets cost money and there is the problem with casual sampling because there is also a problem with interviewer bias and non-response even there. Thus, larger samples have to be taken to do it and you may not have key demos properly represented.

Exit polling has had this problem for years which is why it has to be corrected with actual voting data from the election. Not sure how they would do this now with so much early and mail in ballot voting.

Dave, you didn't mention Georgia. Are polls showing a Biden lead in Georgia as stupid as I think?

Posted by: Captain Oblivious at October 26, 2020 11:42 AM (Astxw)

625 going on reddit last night, those people think Biden is going to win in a landslide and they expect Biden to immediately arrest Trump for treason. They are giddy with expectation. They have really lost it. The screaming on election night and beyond is going to be yuggggge! We will have enough liberal tears to bathe in for the rest of the year.

627 Dave in Fla:

What do you make of the early voting poll that has Biden WAY up in swing states? I think it was released by YouGov. Is it legit? It seems to imply GOPers are crossing over? Is it just a voter suppression poll or something real. Aside from voter registration numbers, do you have any evidence that early GOP voters are staying true and not defecting?
