Italian ships have DMB inscribed on their sides. It stands for "Datsa My Boat!"

131 historical footnote, this is probably close to where Pliny the Younger stood, observing the explosions at Vesuvius. His first impression always struck me; he's looking at a cloud across the bay of a kind that no one had ever seen, and he wrote:

And I realized that this was the very first time that any man in history had ever tried to describe, in writing, what we now call a Mushroom Cloud.

Also another tidbit, hyper realistic renderings are probably the hardest thing to do as a painter but they tend to lack soul or "artistic merit."

Think of all of the great paintings, none or very few are hyper realistically rendered.

202 I love being at my sister's place on Green Bay (it's the actual bay, not the city). In the summer when you leave the windows open you fall asleep to the sound of waves. And the sunsets are spectacularly beautiful. When I get up there and pour a glass of wine and sit out on the deck overlooking the water, my blood pressure instantly goes down.

I grew up 2 blocks away from Lake Michigan. We pretended it was the ocean when we were kids, since you can't see across it. But the actual oceans are great (and you get much better seafood on the coasts.)

The big spoiler as far as the coasts go is that you also have to put up with batshit crazy leftists as well. That's a big price to pay.

There are a lot of reasons why the second season was a bust (no pun intended), not least of all because ABC insisted on bending story arcs to please sponsors and execs.

As for the recent addition to the mythology, it's definitely worth checking out, but I think Lynch intentionally put some weirdness in there that was cheesy and stupid, not to serve the story, but to troll the fans.

Yes. And that lie is intensely culturally destructive. Deliberately so.

For anyone who doesn't mind taking an hour to watch a documentary, I strongly recommend "Why Beauty Matters." It was put together by Roger Scruton, long before he was unpersoned. He is a Brit, a royalist, a conservative and a cultural critic. He actually isn't my cup of tea politically, but his cultural work is good and this piece is spectacular. It's focus is on the shift from beauty to non-beauty (utility, arbitrary otherness, deliberate ugliness, etc.) in art and architecture and why it is such a disaster.

It is well worth the time IMO.

257 I like the low POV and the low horizon line. I like how the rock jetty begins at the right hand frame (not at the bottom). It allows me to continue the work beyond the frame of the piece, implies that there's more beyond.

I also like how the boats in the foreground come into the jetty at perpendicular angles. They create three distinct lines that join the jetty's. For me, this holds the piece down. The rest of the work is quite open with the blue of the water, the blue of the sky, and the atmospheric haze of the background creating a light, airy space that could make the work "float". The criss-crossing lines in front then create a "net" that "traps" the composition in place.

Mrs. JTB and I voted in person yesterday. Very unusual for us but we wanted to avoid crowds on Nov. 3. Reasons: I could have trouble if the line is hours long. Also, my tolerance is at absolute zero. Our experience was completely pleasant. No waiting, two people ahead of us, everyone saying 'good morning' and smiling, and the county employees handling the process were competent, prepared, and ready with a smile. There was even a nearby parking space.

We debated doing this or waiting til the third and we agree we made the right choice.

State campaigns do seem like easy marks.

Run by temporary staffers with probably little knowledge on cyber security or even proper money handling. Eager to accept any attention from people who say they have money. Really busy so they don't think through some things all that deeply.

If I were so inclined, I'd be focusing on campaigns in swing states to try and get financial information like bank accounts from them. Seems like it would be easy enough.

I don't know where they had their account but hacking a financial institution's individual accounts is not a normal hack. It usually has layers of security and fire walls. Hard to believe.

I've got more summer than I can use -- March to November, sometimes up to Christmas. Windows I have, but mostly they have to be shaded or curtained against the alien sun.

The idea of sleeping with windows open in this humid, airless hellhole is . . . well, I just can't even, that's all.

274 I find the artist's implementation of other boats on the water intriguing, but I'm not sure if I'm fully grasping the meaning.

I'm no expert, but I think the boats are a metaphor for man's eternal desire not to drown in a friggin' bay. The ropes may signify his desire to be anchored to a big rock, as to not float away and drown in a friggin' bay.

295 Only recently finished reading John Julius Norwich's history of Sicily. And a good part of the later stages of the book have to do with Naples during the Napoleonic era and Nelson (with Emma Hamilton of course) and the machinations of the Neapolitan court of King Ferdinand I of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies - don't ask.
Ferdinand was a simple, likeable soul who was only happy hunting in the Sicilian countryside or carousing with his courtesans in his hunting license there. As long as he was as far from Neapolitan court as possible, which he loathed and feared, with good reason.
He was certainly not cut out for the intrigue and betrayal of Napoleonic era politics and diplomacy. Not to mention the rebellion, cannon shot and beheadings of the Napoleonic tyranny.
But the citizenry and peasantry of Naples and Sicily loved Ferdinand. Probably for those same reasons. And he loved them.

Needless to say, Naples was far from the peaceful, serene slumber of that picture. Which I presume was painted about that time, or close to it.

Bloody, tumultuous and exciting doesn't even begin to describe the place.
All in all a wonderful place and time in history to get lost in.

301 What was very cool; watching a storm advance across the water. (Of course, I'm just talking about a run-of-the-mill storm not a hurricane or tornadoes or anything like that.)

I stood on the shore at my sister's place and watched a thunderstorm slowly rolling in from Michigan. Bright and sunny on our side of the Bay, clearly pouring on the other side. It advanced in slo-mo, with lots of dramatic lightening over the water.

It was also interesting to watch the reactions of animals. The birds vanished and squirrels and chipmunks ran for cover and the neighbor's dog got all nervous.

She has never waived or said hello to us since we've put up our Trump paraphernalia.

Her house is lit up like a Biden-Harris shrine, and she adds stuff every other day. The latest are red Christmas blinking lights around one of her signs.

To the extent this is comparable to war, you never take for granted that you have a location secure. You don't leave it unattended or stop checking to see if there are any vulnerabilities.

Your defenses are at least as important as your offensive prep.

Did I notice the red caps ? What do you take me for, some kind of amateur. This isn't my first day, you know.

The red cap symbolizes man's eternal quest not to sunburn the top of his head. It's a metaphor, really, of the magnificent power of nature to singe man's soft bits to a friggin' crisp. The green mountainside shows mans optimism that there might be something up there worth eating - since this sunburning and possible drowning on the bay shit gets real old after a while. The algae is the artists reminder that you can't eat everything in the bay - because some of it is nasty.

Orchid, I have some very pretensious ahistorical liberal friends who gentrified H St Corridor. I had to remind them what happened there in 68 and to temper their SJW epiphanies. I pointed out all it would take to destroy their home is if someone put a noose on their porch, photographed it and put it on FascistBook. They sobered up pretty damned fast.

549 The Hunter Laptop story is indeed about exposing the 10% Joe ties to real communists in the CCP. But recall the made up PeePee Dossier had hookers peeing on the bed for Trump ... imo that is the hook they thought would carry their Trump/Russia message.

So Hunter's pervy pics carry the message of screwed up Joe ... but he is portrayed as (pervy) Joe's victim. Still, it is the pervy thang that arouses interest, and that sticks the message deeper into the observer's brain. "Sex Sells" ... probably works on the negative side as well.

And while pervy corrupt seditious Joe preaches about cleaning up DC by electing him, the Hunter images may be the first thing that leaps to the voter's mind. That carries with it the rest of the sellout Joe story, the lies, the commie friends, the 50 years of selling America for Biden Crime Family gain.

I'm not. Not gonna get tested. Neither is the wife. And she works in a grocery store.

Having had it, and recovered, I would say that the main problem of " getting tested" is that the tests themselves are not very reliable. False positives, and negatives, with medicine biased towards the positive end of the spectrum. If you lose your sense of smell, that's a pretty reliable indicator. It just- disappears for a time. Weird.

599 Anywhere that you see HCQ in use by the populations you'll see low covid. Africa of all places, frigging africa, don't have much covid, and thats because of the high HCQ use.

Probably also the death rate is already so high that Covid is inconsequential.

Right but when this first hit Fauxci was against the travel ban and in late February said we wouldn't need to do what they were doing in China. But some how these doctors on the Biden commercial lie that we knew all about this before January. That would mean that their hero Fauxci was lying.

605 Ugh. Woke up with sneezing fits from hell, congested chest and violent coughing fits. Haven't had a cold in years. Have been taking zinc, C, D3, etc. since the WuFlu.

Doubled down on zinc this morning. No fever, but I'm developing a raging headache.

606 I really like this. Ty Smith, The Modern Renaissance Man, a youtube music reviewer who began the year being explicitly non-political, but has been red-pilled, made a video of his photos of the DC Blexit march & White House visit. It's a bit long, but you can skip to 5;45 for the music & pics with no commentary.

608 Just saw a "pushed news" story from NYT. Headline "Why aren't Biden or Trump campaigning in toss-up Texas?".

To ask the question is to answer it - or at least to self-defeat as a question...
Begged-question backfire is a hell of a thing.

609 I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I've read in several places that masks are going to be permanent. As in... "forever."

Yeah. No. I refuse to wear an ID10T mask. I suppose I need to set up a bail fund.

The deathly ill character has always dreamed of painting the Bay of Naples. It's my favorite O. Henry story.

615 471 Yesterday while driving in the Northern exburbs of Dallas, I came across a billboard with the message (paraphrased):

"Hey, you'all from a blue state moving here - Don't vote for the things that you moved away from. Thanks"
Posted by: Tonypete at October 29, 2020 10:40 AM (bJxw1)

Rich Baris has some very interesting observations about that. He found that a majority of Californians who recently moved to TX voted for Cruz in '18, not Beto. He said that while prior to 2016 or so it is true that blue state transplants to red states tended to be people who moved solely due to jobs and brought their liberal politics with them, since 2016, the outward migration of blue staters to red states has been mainly conservatives. They have given up hope that CA or NY will ever flip and so are fleeing. Weird Dave is one example.

Baris said the new people are actually helping to help red states red. The downside, of course, is that the blue states will get even bluer.

I note that lib Californians and New Yorkers seem to be in a deep state of denial. They still brag about how great their state economies are and how superior they are to red state yahoos. The Californians say they NEVER see any homeless and the New Yorkers praise the enlightened policies of Cuomo.
