What is frustrating to me is that the Van Hagar albums sold way, way more than the Van Halen original discs. No justice in the world.
When they kicked David Lee Roth out of the band, which I thought was sad, and announced Hagar was going to lead I thought "well hot damn, this is going to be some tasty guitar god heaven" And Eddie decided he was Mozart on the keyboards instead. Eddie was an interesting cat. He was a bit of a techie, too. Experimented with using a Variac on his some of his amplifiers. Not boosting the line voltage - actually reducing it. To get that "brown sound", as he called it. I imagine he dropped it to a small amp( like a Fender Champ, till it distorted how he liked, and then monitored that loud enough to make everyone's ears bleed.
That said, I never cared for VH too much. Thought Dave Roth was a total twatwaffle. And that's saying something in an industry that's chock full of twatwaffles. Eddie was good, but there is a whole lot more to guitar than just playing fast. Lots of people have good tone, lots of people play fast, it is VERY difficult to do both. It always sounded gimmicky to me. Posted by: Common Tater at October 06, 2020 04:19 PM (+CASr) 227

It's in David Lee Roth's autobiography, it was included to see if all of the requirements were read.
As some of you know, I used to work backstage at several concert venues. Consequently, I've seen Van Halen (the band in general) a few times. I've also been somewhat close to the band members themselves (10' or closer, depending on the person/year).
When the band was out with Sammy the last time, Eddie looked... really sick. Sammy Hagar, on the other hand, looked great. That was about 2005. The last time they were out with DLR was 2015, and Eddie didn't look that good then. So really, not surprising. I was really close to Tom Petty backstage a few weeks before he died (he walked right past me), and to say he looked like walking death was an understatement. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at October 06, 2020 04:04 PM (E+OcO) For the first time since I heard the no brown MampM's thing, this makes sense. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at October 06, 2020 04:12 PM (sy5kK) It was a safety check. If the road crew came into the backstage area and brown MandM's were in the dish, they knew to make sure to really check the rigging and electrical to make sure that it was where they needed it for their equipment. If they were not in the dish, they felt pretty comfortable that everything was up to specs. Trust me when I say that arena staff are not some of the most thorough at doing their jobs. The 90s equivalent of that was the vocal gymnastics sopranos in pop. For every Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey, who had good instincts on when to be showy and when to hold a note and let it soar, you got the Christina Aguileras that just did whatever.
And so many people think the vocal gymnastics are what make a good singer now that it's ruined the voting on shows like The Voice and America's Got Talent. I'm gonna guess that the "no brown M&Ms" as an urban legend is because they wouldn't always use it. Because why use that as your check when it's the third time you've been in that arena. You would want to change it up for the tours. I think it sticks in pop culture though because people see it as eccentricities of rich people without them being aware of the real reason why it is there.

I know a lot of rockers have passed, but this one feels a lot like the door to an era is beginning to close rapidly. From the 50's to the late 90's rock and roll was a shared community experience because of radio. There was a continuity to it. Think Wolfman Jack in that car movie with Ritchie Cunningham and Indiana Jones.

I've got the Fizz Monkey on my back. I've got the Soda Stream setup but, despite sending me advertising email almost daily, they are out of stock of replacement cylinders. I attribute this to the 'Rona lockdown. I know Israel is taking it very seriously. Now a predatory capitalist shark has smelled blood in the water. Soda Sense is a company that does have cylinders available although at a higher price (and Soda Stream are the Jews). So now that Soda Stream has its hands tied behind its back, Soda Sense moves in. Allegedly, once you buy a membership, they are price competitive.

Jack White was not supposed to be a technical guitar god...like Tom Petty, his thing was reaching into all the trad genres and pulling out pieces to perform or put together in his own way....from accoustic ditties (we are gonna be friends or whatever) to stunners like "Doorbell" -- it was his range and the way he recognized, knew about, and used influences that put him in that crowd
(and yeah, the Edge is who doesn't belong. U2 most overrated over.) Back to White--heck, the emotion and style of "jolene" -- that type of thing reminds me of Lyle Lovett mixing up all different varieties of American music...and White brought back, so to speak, Loretta Lynn, with a newly-produced piece of music, carefully crafted. His trad-country stuff with Brendon Benson interesting, too. Range. But Oh, geez, Eddie----- Posted by: hey! ho! let's go! at October 06, 2020 05:10 PM (ZBkSG) 501

Funny thing about throat cancer: it was essentially completely unknown prior to the late 1800s.
Just a very few, very occasional, very rare cases. Then the incidence started going up. In the 1920s it became a bit more common. It kept on ramping up through the 30s and 40s. Then, in the 1960s, it skyrocketed. By the early 20-oughts it was one of the most common cancers in human beings. Isn't that just a little unusual? Going from essentially nonexistent to extremely common? Isn't that something worth ... noticing? Isn't it worth talking about? The thing is, of course, the medical professionals already know exactly why it happened. They don't talk about it. Because if they did, they'd be yelled at for being prudes. When you take highly active biological substances and apply them to mucus membranes that aren't designed for them, unexpected things happen. This is why oral sex and anal sex cause cancer. And help kill the people doing it. "Hur-de-hur-hur, sounds like incel talk!" will be the only answer you'll get if you try discussing it. But this is the truth.
