The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
Yes, I'm happy that Donny 2-Scoops nominated Amy Coney Barrett, and if I had my way, there wouldn't be any hearings. None. If the GOP has the necessary votes, as McConnell and Graham claim, just move the nomination out of committee to a straight floor vote. What's the point of the hearings? Everybody knows the Democrats are going to vote not to confirm, regardless. I know there would be value in allowing the Democrats to show the American people how batshit crazy they are in nationally televised hearings just before the election, but after the Kavanaugh debacle, they've forfeited their right to any kind of consideration. Just shove it up their ass and listen to them squeal. And then have Kayleigh McEnany play selected clips from the Kavanaugh hearings during a press conference and conclude with "...and that's why the Democrats can't have nice things."

But I do have one caveat.

Barrett is Roman Catholic. No, I'm not concerned about any "dual allegiance" garbage, but I do know that RCC social teaching is not good on a number of important issues and I don't know how much that will affect Barrett's decisions. I remember back in the day when American bishops would write public letters to (or about) Ronald Reagan and the sentiments expressed were mostly squishy left nonsense. In our continual struggle against the USSR, the bishops were all a bunch of appeasement monkeys, and domestically, they never met a big government welfare program that they didn't like.

And more recently, the RCC was all in on Obamacare and only started complaining about it when they discovered that the government was going to force them to violate Church teachings:

From 2012:

It is now a requirement of Obamacare that every Catholic institution larger than a single church — and even including some single churches — must pay for contraceptives, sterilization, and morning-after abortifacients for its employees. Each of these is directly contrary to the Catholic faith. But the Obama administration does not care. They have said, in effect, Do what we tell you — or else.

I remember giving a Nelson laugh to the RCC when this first happenened. I said, what did you stupid idiots think was going to happen when gave your approval to the government running the country's health care?

Also, they're real soft on illegal immigration and have no problem with inviting in millions of unvetted, undocumented, unassimilable "refugees" from any country in the world who can manage to make it here, in the name of compassion. In other words, like any liberal, they're extremely generous with other people's money.

Oh, and I almost forgot the death penalty. Technically, Catholic theology allows it, but the conditions they place on its use are so strict that they might as well be against it in principle. And didn't Pope Francis recently issue a statement saying that the death penalty is immoral under any circumstances?

Anyway...

I don't know how much of this, or if any of it, influences Ms. Barrett's legal and constitutional thinking. I do know that Neil Gorsuch "surprised friend and foe alike" when he sided with the liberal wing of SCOTUS in a recent decision making sexual orientation a protected class according to federal law. They arrived at this decision by expanding the definition of "sex" as it appears in the relevant civil rights statute. And I thought Gorsuch was supposed to be an originalist. Not this time. He just pissed all over the original definition of the word in order to get where he wanted to go.

Gorsuch supposedly attends an Episcopalian church that is very liberal on social issues.

I'm worried about what will happen when, say, a case involving some aspect of Trump's immigration policy comes before SCOTUS. Barrett clerked for Antonin Scalia. He was also a Roman Catholic, but he never "grew in office". I hope his influence on her proves to be the stronger.

Oh, and one more thing: this latest 'bombshell' story about Trump's taxes is going to be like Geraldo Rivera opening Al Capone's vault.

38 The Kruiser Kabana this morning was ruminating on which of two possibilities is correct:
1) The Dems know that trashing ACB will not be good for them, and will refrain, or

2) The Dems know that trashing ACB will not be good for them, but they lack the discipline and morals to refrain.
I think a third scenario is in play. This is really a fight for the Democratic Party and who will lead it after the 2020 defeat. The young lunatics want to burn it all down, and don't much care whether their approach makes any sense. The older hands, e.g. Pelosi and Schumer, know this is stupid, but fear appearing to acquiesce without putting up a desperate fight. They figure, probably correctly, that if they don't fight, the Dem base will conclude that they're useless, and they might as well throw in with the lunatics. Thus, the old hands will accept a temporary seppuku, so as to live and fight another day.

There is no down side here for us.

The anomalies part isn't correct, I think. But the "different era" part matters. There are virtually no "young" lawyers or judges who are going to be conservative on social issues at this point. Conservatives lost the culture war. So much so that the burning political issues at this point are how much we will disadvantage actual women to accommodate trannies. Don't look to the judiciary to reverse those results.

The RCC, commie pope notwithstanding, is still firmly pro-life, from conception to natural death, so much so that it states an official position against the death penalty.

Makes me glad I stopped going to church back when I started college 25 years ago.

First time I saw her, she was stunning. It was the Spanish version of the movie they remade with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Open Your Eyes, which I think is the English translation of the Spanish title, and they changed it for the American version.

Confused?

Well, I think they gave her the unenviable task of being Tom's beard for a while. That was not nice.

And... picture number 3? That looks a lot more recent than the others, and as is not often the case for celebrities, she's still stunningly gorgeous, even now at age whatever.

The Bail Project seems to be an organization where BLM, Antifa and really big funders intersect - Soros, Gates, Branson, @Jack and more. We're talking 10's-100's of millions in funding that at least anecdotally (Louisville uhaul) indicates it's being used to fund the riots. Not bail them out, but funding the activities that get them arrested AND THEN bailing them out. Nice cover.

That's huge.

Think it's interesting that after Tucker outed a couple of the org's Advisors that one of the ones named contacted his show and will be a guest tonight. Why not shrugging it off?

155 As a cradle Catholic, I share the uneasiness and even utter disdain for the leaders of the Catholic Church. The leaders are squishy on the issues - and the reasons for it are abhorrent -- the money. The bishops individually and also under the umbrella of the USCCB apparently never heard of or read the story of the "Scorpion and the Frog". The clergy (as a whole) doesn't go stand with the people at the pro-life protests, won't make a firm stand and deny politicians who publicly support/endorse abortion.

With that said, there are beacons of light. Franciscan University and other truly conservative Catholic universities get it. They stand up, they show up, and they will fight.

There are priests too who get it. Not as many as we would like, but they are there. I'm fortunate to have a priest like this assigned to a nearby parish.
For those who consider themselves former Catholics, or just gave up, I would offer you this: Come back. The church is a human run institution, but the faith is not. Don't want to financially support a parish, bishop, diocese? That is fine. That isn't what our faith is. It is bigger and more beautiful. Consider coming home, we await your return with joy. And perhaps together us like minded can influence change.

There's a funny, old episode of the Bob Newhart Show (the one from the 70s) with an early-ish appearance by Raul Julia. He plays Jerry's adopted brother and he tries to put the moves on Emily. She tells him "sorry, I'm married" and he says, "it's for the best, I would've broken your heart."

157 "but I do know that RCC social teaching is not good on a number of important issues"

There are tensions between New Testament theology and the successful governance and administration of a nation-state. Love your enemies, judge not lest ye be judged, we rejoice in our sufferings, etc. I'm not knocking NT, but its focus is on the individual's quest for afterlife, not on how you run a world-power state to survive on a globe filled with lethal enemies.

I'm fine with ACB. Picking SC judges is a crapshoot anyway. As long as she's not a crazy leftist and not a penumbra seeker, I got other things to worry about.

169 As a catholic myself, I wouldn't think there would be too much to worry about regarding ACB. The bishops are hit or miss at best, and they've lost a lot of influence since the abuse scandals. They are still smarting from that. The laity have a much closer relationship with their priests. Even priests from other parishes or organizations. I can count on 0 fingers how often our bishop has even attended a mass at my church in the 3 years. Its a far cry from just 15 years ago when I'd see the Bishop at several masses a year shaking hands and talking with parishioners. I will say this though, after the church shooting in ft worth last year, the Bishop did allow parishes to form defense teams with concealed handguns at mass. Thats probably the most badass ministry there has been in the church. Super strict requirements to qualify.

Posted by: Muldoon at September 28, 2020 11:46 AM (Fc5rx)

233 Sunday morning I was on a long run and had time to think about polling, turnout and turnout models.

Yeah, I had a lot of time to think.

We really started noticing crap polls in 2012. We could tell something was hinky with them, and a lot of us (myself included) tried to see if there was a way to make sense of the mess we were being offered.

As we went into the election, Obama was ahead in the polls by a few points, about the same as Hillary was ahead. But the campaigns didn't think so. I remember the Monday before the election, Obama looked like his dog died, while Romney was bubbling with energy. I am still certain that the campaign internals were showing that Obama was going to lose.

Obviously, he didn't. So why would the internals be wrong?

TJM keeps talking about the 2018 turnout models, and there is something to this, although I'm not sure how that assumptions are being used right now. But in 2012 I think that both campaign polling operations did not factor in the complete screw up of the GOP GOTV operation on election day. I think it is a pretty reasonable assumption that Romney's fuckup that day cost him 2-4 points in vote differential. Enough to lose key states like Florida. Recall that some polling firms stopped polling Florida at all, they were confident Romney would win the state.

So then we get to 2016, and this time the polls were definitely wrong, the fact that we have President Trump is testament to how bad they were. But what swung it for Trump was unexpected turn out for Trump in rural/red areas of swing states. North Florida and Central PA were a source of votes that no one expected, especially the polls which are certainly getting their information by respondents in urban and suburban areas, I suspect.

Even in 2018 the polls weren't all that right. They said the house would go Dem, but they also said that DeSantis and Scott would lose in Florida.

So here we are in 2020. Are the polling firms accounting for rural/red turnout in this election? I doubt it, they haven't changed their methodologies. This campaign very likely will be determined by turnout. And the GOP has been on the ground doing voter contact for months now, while the Dems have been hiding in their houses.

The term the church likes to employ is subsidiarity. Basically means the organization is decentralized. Practically speaking the Pope administrates his bishopric and all the other bishops administrate their respective bishoprics.

247 Picking SCOTUS judges is all about picking the right personality ... to get a reliable conservative you need someone that has the right "positions" going in, but more importantly doesn't want or need to be liked. Gorsuch and Kav are probably going to turn into Roberts type squishes in about another 2 or 3 years because they're upper middle class apple polishers at their core. Some chance Kav will hold a grudge for a while, but most people are forgive and forget types. ACB might be ok for several years because people with big families don't necessarily have much time to curry favor with the cocktail set, but watch out for her empty nest liberalizing a decade or so out.

In all seriousness, my top choice for a Supreme Court Justice is Don Willett, a conservative baptist, ex Texas Supreme Court Justice, current sitting justice on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. (nominated by Trump in 2017)

I don't know how much of a southern accent he has, he was raised in a small one stop light town not far from Dallas. Not an ivy-leaguer, he's a brilliant jurist and used to write very funny tweets. (He got off twitter when he recieved his Federal Appointment)

And yes, the biggest knock on him is that people in both parties in New England, New York, and the left coast would go crazy if he was appointed. Think they're mad about a Roman Catholic? Just watch how nuts they would go after a conservative baptist.

A lot of the thinking now, at least in north Texas, is why should these people have to abandon their home for a chance here. Our parish focuses on medical and school missions in Central America vs funding things here.

This may be an anomaly, but we no longer invite Catholic Charities from Fort Worth. There were alot of complaints about their mission and goals going against church teaching. They are truly CINO, catholic in name only. Last time they came they sent an espiscopalian to talk to us about how they help find living wage employment for refugees. Their definition of a living wage was 50K and over per year. I think that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way, and there were a lot of complaints about that. Heck the teachers at our church school only make 60K.

The former vice president and 2020 presidential contender and his wife Jill Biden reported about $10 million in income in 2017 from a pair of S-corporations, CelticCapri and Giacoppa. The two entities were paid for the couple's book deals and speaking gigs.

The S-corps reported another $3.2 million in income in 2018.

While both S-corps generated a lot of income, they paid out modest salaries in comparison.

In 2017, the two companies paid the couple a combined $245,833 in wages. This increased to $500,000 in 2018.

That mean any amounts the Bidens received as a distribution wasn't subject to the 15.3% combined Social Security and Medicare tax.

Well, that's because elections were almost entirely decided by how much the local parties in each state organized. It also helped that some states didn't even do popular votes. Also that travel was damn near impossible to do quickly.

So, local organization was still the most important thing, and presidential candidate showing up to localities helps those local organizations tremendously. You may get a few dozen people out to meet your local congressman for a town hall, but you can get hundreds or even thousands for the president.

Biden's simply giving up that tool in favor of texting.

Overturning Chevron is the closest thing, I think, to a silver bullet for the administrative state.

The administrative state is one of the main central hubs of progressive power in America, and if they suddenly can't make up their own rules anymore unmoored from legislation, a single opinion repealing decades of regulation and tens of thousands of pages in the federal rule book, then yes, the Left will have experienced a body blow it won't be able to come back from for a very long time.

A lot of the thinking now, at least in north Texas, is why should these people have to abandon their home for a chance here. Our parish focuses on medical and school missions in Central America vs funding things here."

An honest foreign policy with respect to Central America - one which our culture is no longer capable of - would recognize that the most Moral and Enlightened thing we could do was to mount an Expeditionary Force, take two weeks and knock over their shithole governments, and then executing all the former Regime Goons plus the Narco's and their allies. THEN decent, responsible non-criminal governments could be set up that would make those decent places to live. THAT is what would be best for the people there, and would also be a pretty good outcome for us, too.

The Pope just declared Trump to not be a Christian ... that is not doctrinal ... the death penalty thing was another issue ... but what else might this commie usurper pope dictate from his thrown? What ring of power does he kiss? Which group brought him to power.

American Catholicism has shown some resistance to this pope ... hopefully Amy is willing to separate her legal decisions completely from the dictates of commie Francis, while retaining her "Biblical heritage" judgement. 362 An honest foreign policy with respect to Central America - one which our culture is no longer capable of - would recognize that the most Moral and Enlightened thing we could do was to mount an Expeditionary Force, take two weeks and knock over their shithole governments, and then executing all the former Regime Goons plus the Narco's and their allies. THEN decent, responsible non-criminal governments could be set up that would make those decent places to live. THAT is what would be best for the people there, and would also be a pretty good outcome for us, too.

Like I said, we no longer have the cultural will to think like that anymore.

Pope Franky is a problem. Franky and his likeminded cardinals/bishops/religious are THE problem. Hopefully he's an anomaly which will be rectified in the not too distant future. I can see another schism if not. From my observations, the RCC has always been a blue collar religion anyways. This would explain the large number of democrats in the church. For some, they realize the Democrat party of old is not what exists today. Others went willingly to the hard left with them. Then there are those of us who are conservative, pro-life, etc. While this can explain the reluctance of the clergy to tow a hard line on issues, it is still inexcusable.

Oh, I know it is the case. I even looked into it after the election because I was so stunned by the results.

I could buy Obama winning, but winning Florida was just unbelievable to me.

The fraud in Florida came from two counties, St. Lucia and Miami-Dade. In Miami-Dade their vote total was lower than in 2008 and 50K GOP votes disappeared from the 2008 results.

After that year, Florida severely tightened up voting procedures, and they are even tighter this year. Palm Beach County has already been put on notice that they will have state auditors watching them on election day after their mess in 2018.

396 "but I do know that RCC social teaching is not good on a number of important issues"
________

There is a problem here of conflating 3 things:

1. The asinine statements of the current Pope. Note that he has not defined anything ex cathedra, IMO because he is not mentally equipped to do so. He's actually vague on specifics, and never answers the dubia asking for clarifications.

2. The USCCB, which is, as it has long been, a collection of assholes. But that is not determinative in Catholicism.

3. The actual teaching of the Church, which is a very different matter. It cannot sway to and fro, but is fixed (Vat I was explicit on this, as has every other council, including Vat II.)

All we have is another era when the Church is in an unhealthy condition. Been there, done that. And the Church, unlike the Anglicanism I left for it, does not have a Brezhnev doctrine, where what the heretics gain, they keep. Unlike almost all the other major denominations I know of, the fight is ongoing.

Specifically, on immigration, the Church does plead for charity and openness, but NOT to the extent of ripping apart the host country. On the DP, it's worth remembering what kind of country the last 3 Popes were raised in. JPII and BXVI were extremely intelligent men, and made it clear that their own opposition was NOT binding on the faithful. Francis (or Liberius II, as I think he should be called) isn't like that. But again, he never quite nails it down, I think for Bidenesque reasons.

Posted by: Eeyore at September 28, 2020 12:11 PM (7X3UV)

397 Overturning Chevron is the closest thing, I think, to a silver bullet for the administrative state.

The administrative state is one of the main central hubs of
progressive power in America, and if they suddenly can't make up their
own rules anymore unmoored from legislation, a single opinion repealing
decades of regulation and tens of thousands of pages in the federal rule
book, then yes, the Left will have experienced a body blow it won't be
able to come back from for a very long time.

IMO, big bold steps such as that one are what's needed to combat the decades of incremental progressivism that the Left has accomplished (against the Constitution and the will of the people). PDT's recent EO banning CRT is a perfect example of this.

It's why we have elections. To put people in power to protect us from the ravages of progressivism (really, anti-Americanism), which are legion today.

Problem is, we already see it cause the curtain has already been pulled back, and his attempts to protect the institution not only ruins any chance of many of us having any respect for it in the future, it also lowers the belief in the system as a whole. And when that happens...

Somebody here mentioned they might have Joe locked away so they can try to readjust his internal clock, which is possible - I don't know how that would/could work. There just seems to be something magical about the sun going down - these people have no clue what time of day it is to begin with.

I could see Joe, during his crash, start to fumble for words and not be able to answer Trump, who isn't going to let up once he senses Joe's collapse. Joe, not being able to answer anything could very well lose it. In normal debates, I could see him taking a swing at Trump, but I bet this is going to be some weird 20' apart on each side of the stage thing.

422 "In the history of Catholicism, a Pope has only spoken ex cathedra twice. Both times it had to do with Mary, the Mother of God.This is not a worry you should have." Posted by: bluebell

OK, thanks. My blurry thinking was it was either outdated or overruled ... but there is a path for the Pope (with advice and consent?) to establish doctrinal interpretations of scripture ... right? My impression is the same group that managed to install Francis while there was still a cogent pope ... is perhaps a more politicized/marginalized group ... performing a sort of Coup.

There is no doubt the old Soviets and modern commies (and others) have attempted to secure influence in the Catholic church ... and they seem to have a victory with Francis.

423 407 Here's what I don't get about Biden. Why does he wan to do this? OK you get to be POTUS. But you also get to be POTUS who has to resign mid-term because of dementia. Why would anyone want to go down in the history books like that?

Because he wants to keep Hunter out of jail, and has been using his political power to that effect for decades.

Plus ego. He has wanted it for decades. What does he care what history thinks as he is so close to being it, in both senses of the word.

424 If you morons didn't read Angelo Codevilla: "Revolution-2020" as linked in the Morning Report....

....you will remain morons until you do.

Although I do not share the author's conclusion as to the degree to which the Tree of Liberty now requires nourishing, I will absolutely assert he has accurately modeled the scope and breadth of the battlespace.

I think things are going to hit the fan and he'll need it.

I absolutely agree. And I think conservative Catholics agree on this as well. The Pope's official teaching on faith and morals is considered infallible (no matter who the Pope is). This one has done nothing official to change that. His opinions on things, however, are completely separate and are just that, opinions. Catholics are under no obligation to agree with him and many don't.

432 I'm, I would have had to get special permission from the parish priest that refused us. Plus, he told us two days before the baptism was scheduled. My father, husband and brothers wanted to have a little chat with him after that stunt.

436 Barrett is a possible vote against ROE its not a sure thing but its a sure as you can get out of the crop of possibles.

She's probably, i'm guessing a bit more liberal on criminal law type issues, because she doesn't have a prosecutors background. The criminal law, in theory tends to lead to more liberal results that criminal law in practical reality. She's billed as an originalist which is probably more scalia esque than you ever see out of Roberts or even Gorsuch.

The perfect is the enemy of the good. She's as good as your going to get and a lot better than you'd have gotten if Hillary had won.

is she blackmailable? I hope not.

445 Francis is not the Pope. He is the Anti Pope, one of many the church has spawned through its history. This one is the tool of the Lavender Mafia, who forced Pope Benedict out. Benedict obviously had some secret that he thought was too terrible to release, but there is no secret that can be worse than the pedophila that Francis and his Lavender Mafia protect

All good Catholics know this and know the war that goes on in the Church. Pray for it.
