First-World Problems...Part Who The Hell Knows...

timelapse1.jpg

Where is the Green New Deal? I want a battery that lasts forever!

The camera in the photo has a small battery that lasts for barely 250 photos. And even fewer if I want to take 4k images. Yes, it is a difficult and painful life, but we must try to function in this brutal time.

I was taking some time lapse images of...stuff*...and 250 images just didn't cut it. at 30 frames/second that's barely eight seconds, and I WANT MORE!

So off to the internet, where I found an AC converter that fits perfectly in the battery compartment (it has a convenient hole in the cover for a cable) and will allow me to power the camera externally.

But here is the awful part; I had to wait an entire day for it to be shipped to me. In fact, more than 24 hours from the time I ordered it until the time it arrived.

I struggled, barely functioning, mostly curled up in a dark closet until the package arrived.

Joking aside, it is a wonder what we have available to us. That camera takes amazingly high quality photos with an almost infinite number of adjustments available at the touch of a finger. I can transfer the photos to my PC or send them over the internet to be printed. Oh, it takes pretty good video too!

Remember the clunky and crappy cameras of yesteryear? Sure, some of us invested a lot of money in equipment, and time learning how to use it, and were able to take glorious photos. But most of us muddled along taking mediocre photos and then had to wait to get them developed.

I am sure that there are purists who pine for the good old days, but most of us are perfectly happy with modern photography equipment that does most of the work for us and produces better photographs.

Although they still sit in the equivalent of photo albums, mostly unseen...

I use a shop here in town that does color development, I develop and print my own BW. I'm sure you have a local that does it and sells film but they are scarce now.

25 I have a Nikon that is strictly film. It's getting harder to find film for it and even harder to find the batteries it needs. Paid $500 for it 25 years ago and it's been worth every penny. It went to China with me and the pics I got there were awesome! I'm not some great photographer but that camera makes great pictures easy.

55 My neighbor bought her hubby a microscope so he could examine coins. It's binocular and has its own screen although it will also connect to a monitor. I want to hunt tardigrades and thought a microscope like that would be wonderful for that purpose but would cost a fortune.

Nope. Less than a hundred bucks.

But I would point out that microscopes go back to vanwhatshisname. It's old technology. We're just seeing improvements.

Trekked to some nice spots for sunrises. Did the waterfalls. Over exposed shots. Perfectly timed wildlife.

I enjoyed it for a while but the hobby just grew old. All it was for were likes on Flickr.

Once that lost its charm, so did photography.

134 I think modern digital cameras are fantastic but I'm glad I learned how to use an excellent old fashioned film camera that required me to make all the adjustments as to aperture and shutter. Doing those things gives the photographer a better understanding of how light works to create an image.

One of the things I love about digital cameras is the ability to take large numbers of photographs and immediately delete the bad ones.
The way to become a good photographer is to lots of photographs. I would guess I've taken 30,000 photos in my life.

I'm not a photography teacher but I would give two pieces of advice. First delete your bad photos. If you only show people the photos you're happy with people will think you're a good photographer.
Second remember that cameras don't share the emotions you feel when you see something.

Sorry the post was far too long for a lurker.

145 First world problems: the FDA wants to chip us like our pets for a virus that will not kill 99% of us.
I was going to bring up a seriously dystopian book I read on the Book Thread . "Limbo" by Bernard Wolfe is the closest parallel to the Plandemic Era that I have seen.

Martine returns from self-imposed exile after the end of a World War to find that his cynical and satirical musings about society in his diary have been used as a blueprint for the rebuilt society.Disarmament has been taken literally with people volunteering to have one or more limbs amputated. This movement has split into two factions: one which remains helpless - paraded in baby carriages by their wives or mothers; another that replaces the missing limbs with more powerful artificial limbs.

Two terms from the book that stuck with me during the scamdemic - "Immobs" short for immobilization through amputation of legs and arms and "Volamps" short for voluntary amputees.

I look around and see the self-gagging candidates for this type of masochistic collective societal insanity "for the greater good" everywhere. Self-chipping seems pretty tame in comparison.

Today I am doing a "training" that is part of a larger training, and this particular section has essentially no connection to how I function. The ideas are not new, they're not relevant to my work, and it contains a lot of jargon that is not useful, unless you're going to use this technique. Which I'm not.

So the experience of doing this "training" is in some ways, counterproductive, in that I HAVE to do it, like a college course that is required, but you have no use for. It takes time away from things that ARE useful, and it clutters the brain with things that are not.

And worst of all, this broad kinda looks like and very much sounds like Sandy Cortez. Bleh.

I bought a small pumpkin at Kroger yesterday, on a whim. I can't eat the crust, so I figured I'd just scoop out the filling and eat it.

The pie was just awful and completely inedible. The spices and texture were all wrong.

The fact that is wasn't refrigerated should have warned me it wasn't real custard.

Don't ever buy a grocery store pumpkin pie!!!

171 Line-ups and alliances in this one are exotic and unfamiliar to most.

Armenia's never let their close ties to Moscow weaken, post-Soviet era. Basis composed of several parts. Christian/Orthodox (really). Armenia by far most advanced/organized/capable of the small former Soviet republics in the area. Shared lack of love with Turkey (putting it mildly).

Turkey - well, their sympathies are obvious (Azerbaijan is basically a Turkish ethnic and linguistic territory, simplifying).

Iran - in this case, bizarrely, not necessarily an arsonist or vandal. For their own reasons (rivalry with Turkey), have been quietly friendly with Armenia, which has also facilitated some of Iran's dealings with Moscow.

But Turkish F-16s, ooh, that would be exciting.

I have this thing, where if I have a few bucks or even a few 20s in my pocket, that can be more valuable to have, than a few hundred bucks in the bank. Or wherever.

Seriously, I don't view money as a straight line, where one dollar equals one dollar which equals one dollar, everywhere and anywhere.

In other words, a dollar in the pocket is MUCH more valuable than a thousand dollars, when one is dying of thirst, and there's a vending machine selling water for a dollar... and the machine doesn't take thousand dollar bills.

My dad made almost no money as a low level GS employee but he would take the entire family to the old Memorial Stadium about 5 to 10 times each summer. I recall we would sit in the upper deck reserve for two dollars a seat which to him was a princely sum but well worth it to him when he saw how much me and my two sisters and brother enjoyed it. We got to see Brooks Robinson and Frank Robinson, Jim Palmer, Dave McNally Mike Cuellar, Boog Powell and all those other Orioles superstars of that era many many times. Ball day and bat day were always favorites.

There is no way I can do that today with my family. And not that I would want to, with todays clowns in major-league sports behaving the way they are.

And yes; - one year a little later in the 70s we got a 19 inch Trinitron for the *sewing room.*

This is retarded even for libs. The individual chocolate bar at the checkout-line costs $2. Or you can buy a 6 pack of the same chocolate bar for $5 in aisle 23 of the supermarket.

What will happen is people will buy more chocolate bars because it's cheaper to buy in bulk.

Libs never think things through even for a second.

As a kid growing up in WA state long ago, there were 3 kinds of apples:

Delicious
Winesap
some goofy little apples from a neighbor's tree.

Delicious were for eating, Winesaps were for pie making, and the goofy little apples from a neighbor's tree usually sat in a bag for about a week, then tossed.

These days? You need a spreadsheet to remember them all.

I have an old Minolta, bought new circa 1982, that is a manual-only 35, with a match-needle metering system, powered by a 1.34 volt mercury battery. And the Safety Nazis have made mercury batteries unavailable. A battery of any other voltage would cause the meter to indicate wrong. They used mercury batteries because their discharge curve was a plateau at 1.34 volts until the bitter end, at which point it nosedived. So you didn't worry about slow degradation of accuracy.

No, if you work in some fields, you are actually DOING suicide prevention... or some variant thereof, as a matter of routine. As for ethics, this is just how the license process works. You have to know where your ethical lines are, and sometimes it's not always obvious. And it can change. So if you are operating outside the ethical bounds, you can be sued, lose your job, lose your license, and even be criminally prosecuted.

301 I'm probably wrong, but just sorta see most cats as generic cats. There are the few specialized cats, the ones with flat faces, the ones that are excessively fluffy, or Siamese cats, or the ones that have some wild in them.

But otherwise, yeah, cats are cats.

Coats are weird on cats. I know there are certain patterns for some of those specialized breeds, which it sounds like this one is, but otherwise it's kind of funny to see a litter of cats, where one is mostly black, one is mostly white, one is black AND white, and one is mostly orange.

Now the damned thing works.

Repaired the other four dash cameras the same way. Ugly, but it works and i didnt spend more tha $24 to repair all five of them.

Have you ever tried that thing where you cut an opening in the top (like for a jack-o-lantern) of a small pumpkin, scoop out the seeds, and then fill the pumpkin 2/3-ish way with soup makings, put the top back on, and then bake your soup in the oven? You can scrape pieces of pumpkin flesh into the scoop with your ladle when you serve it. Just don't puncture the pumpkin when you scrape or you just made a soup fountain!

like poodles for example

as ypu might expect, they can carry either a dominant black or recessive cream gene pair oe a mix
then they might also have a fading/silvering gene so even if they had a pair of black genes they'd still fade to gray (aka blue)
then some of them have a merle gene where they have markings like a tuxedo poodle

and that's just within one breed of dog

342 So they are push polling the pandemic, and they want to know what issues are important to me.
------------
This appears to be the tact they are going to try and take. They need to peel off Trump voters from 2016 to have any change of winning, especially since Trump has dug into their base.

They are trying to scare seniors about COVID and convince them that Biden is the one who will save them from the pandemic.

Some of the polls we've seen in Florida reflect this strategy, saying that Trump has lost support in the 65+ demographic while gaining with hispanics.

For the record, I don't believe those polls. But that is what they seem to be trying to sell. Possibly the polls are push polls, and worded in such a way to elicit responses from the 65+ respondents.

I heard a Biden commercial on our local talk radio during Rush's show and it was all about COVID.

They better hope that Trump doesn't announce a vaccine next month, cause that will really mess up their narrative.

Personally, I think it is a very weak strategy, but to be fair, it is literally all they've got.

IMHO, melamine laminate is pretty hard to beat for kitchen countertops. Lasts many decades, and costs very little. Rock, of any kind, is a bad choice. It's extremely heavy, so the supporting structure has to be extra strong (even the floors!), and it's so hard that you're going to break a lot of glassware dropping it an inch or two onto the counter.

If you want something cool, go with sheet zinc.

373 Speaking as a geologist, I'm sure that granite could be found in thousand places in this world that would be suitable for making curling stones. But why would you bother? It's a very small market, and the existing suppliers have is sewn up.

And, as an aside, a lot of the rock peddled as "granite" for countertops is not true granite.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 27, 2020 03:43 PM (hbiWb)

I'm not a geologist but it's supposed to be made from three varieties of very rare quartz free granite with very low moisture content that allows for the freezing conditions it's exposed to.

375 I think the debate will be the return of "Malarky Scream" from the 2012 debate. It seems to be his only tactic.

I'm hoping Trump has a strategy to deal with it, since Ryan just sat their and let him get away with it.

My problem today. Do I stand by my principles and continue my ban on the BLM-loving nfl, or bend a bit and take up my neighbor's offer to join him in his man cave garage with free beer?I

Ok. I know what I'm going to do, I just need to rationalize it.

See? If it's quartz-free, it's not granite. Granite, by definition must contain between 20 and 60 percent quartz.

Well, Formica and Arborite are melamine laminate, and have been for some 70-odd years. That's the default surface for countertops, now.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 27, 2020 04:12 PM (hbiWb)

398 Eight miles away is a small town named Marble City. There's a functioning quarry but not for marble. It produces limestone for conversion into quicklime.

I live on Limestone Hill. Yes, it's rocky.

Surely this comment is going to be willowed.

399 I have crappy laminate countertops, and not much of them in my little kitchen. I have a total of three small surfaces. One has a dishrack on it, one has my microwave, and one has my Instant Pot plus a bunch of other crap stacked up to keep my cats from getting up on it.

One of these days I'll remodel my kitchen. Better counters, a new dishwasher (I have one now but it doesn't drain properly, so I don't use it), and a microwave that goes above the stove so I can actually use those countertops.

402 Dishwashers not draining properly is a classic failure of a cheap-ass reversing valve that pumps them out. These things fail so often you can buy replacement valves on Amazon.

405 I had a Minolta SR-101 back around 1970. Burglars got it and the insurance replaced it with a 102. Still have it and several lenses. Used to develop black and white. Still have a bunch of 35mm slides I need to convert. Might dust it off one day.

I find it difficult to toss old, obsolete stuff. I'm sitting here looking at five different printers and four old laptops.
