Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Science Isn't Dead, But it Is Ailing! [Jay Guevara]Part of the impetus was from a study by Amgen, summarized in Wikipedia as follows: The requisite data to normalize for the number of papers published in each field are not to hand, but with that caveat these data bear out the impression that the biomedical literature has some real problems. Where, geographically, do these problems come from? Querying the database for papers that raised concerns/issues with results (regardless of whether from physical, life, or medical sciences) yielded these results, again not normalized for the number of papers published in each country: Without information regarding the number of papers published, it's impossible to draw hard conclusions, but I would imagine that there are probably a lot more papers published in the U.S. than in China, and yet the two are in the same ball park regarding questionable results. Interestingly, the database includes data regarding some of the more dubious areas of "science." For this search I included outright scientific fraud, and found effectively none for any of these fields, although a similar search the physical, biological, and health sciences all returned a number of hits. Once again, the caveat regarding total number of papers published applies, this time probably a forteriori. My conclusion, subject to the caveat above: the biomedical literature does in fact have grievous problems, and China is punching above its weight in generating lousy results. Last, the Wild West of "scientific research" (climate change, sociology, alternative medicine, and psychology) I suspect may not have fraudulent papers because results in those areas are so squishy that it is impossible to falsify pretty much any assertion made in those literatures. Posted by: artesian at September 26, 2020 07:36 PM (eXDPU) True. The numbers are actually dodgier than that, because countries (and fields) get conflated with each other in the database, and so double (or multiple) counting is a problem. For example, suppose a dubious paper in solid state material science is published through a collaboration of US and Chinese scientists. That will count as an American paper, a Chinese paper, a physics paper, and oftentimes a chemistry paper. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at September 26, 2020 07:42 PM (5G/3e) 15

1.True Science which believes in facts. data and Scientific Method 2. My own encounters with "science" in the areas of mental health come down to two significant problem areas.
1. In pee sigh chiatry, the results for anti-psychotic medications is VERY spotty, at best. And B. In pee sigh chology, everyone genuflects in the direction of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and those chuckleheads have gotten really REALLY good at creating studies with large enough sample sizes, to generate just enough significance in the results that they can call it "evidence based" treatment. None of which translates into a whole lot of real world improvement in mental health. But insurance companies will pay for both, and so the industry keeps pushing those things that keep the cash rolling in. Posted by: BurtTC at September 26, 2020 07:52 PM (hku12) 38
Even worse is that many of the papers cited by the Amgen study were published in high impact journals. Think Nature, Science, Cell, etc. Which means those studies set the paradigm, pressuring other scientists to "replicate" those results in order to stay funded.

the challenge to even True Results, could come from politically correct agitprop money, which forces Truth to back down to "Profitable Farce". So a challenge does not equal exposure of bad science, it may mean corrupt politics defeating True Science.
This is obvious in political attacks on Truth as seen in Flynn versus Establishment, but happens constantly in Truth versus Global Warming Profiteers. And profiteers are not only financial criminals, but other mafia control freaks. The global warming mafia goes abroad and collects ??? children or oil or opium ... money is the end result, but control comes in many forms. The Narrative must be served, Then the mafias collect the profits. Liberty is defeated by fake narrative, fake science (e.g. Critical Race Theory) ... Then they collect the money. It was chock full of fraud and really poor assumptions in their modeling that no journal would print it. Posted by: PacosMojo at September 26, 2020 07:52 PM (1cUTg) Exactly. If rubbish is published Proceedings of the Bulgarian Institute of Scatology, no one cares. But in the high visibility journals, another story. Researchers are reluctant to say that they can't reproduce someone else's results from a high visibility journal, because it invites the conclusion that they just weren't skilled enough to make it work. In synthetic chemistry in particular, like surgery, skilled technique is crucial. Some people can get any reaction to work ("magic hands") and some people can't get any reaction to work. We call the latter group "physical chemists." (kidding) In chemistry, at least, after a number of people have unsuccessfully tried to reproduce something - and found out about the others, usually at the bar at American Chemical Society meetings - some intrepid soul will publish the hedged warning: "in our hands, this does not work." or also, you get a bunch of crappy data, like everyone who has Covid dies from it, including folks in motorcycle wrecks, or a baby who has a birth defect, and create conclusions which support your political aims. Posted by: Duh Lefft You left out 2 other methods of biasing 'studies'. 1) Fund the hell out of research that supports your hypothesis. 2) Defund, demonize, and blackball researchers that try to refute your hypothesis with real facts. It is also about legal and financial incentives/disincentives. The climate change and similar lobbies want money and power through political, not market means. How is it even POSSIBLE to control for some bias among the treatment providers, so when you get done, you can play games with saying how you controlled for this variable and that, but really, you can't. And you can't redo these studies over and over, in part because the people you studied the first time around are NOT the same people you studied the second. Posted by: illiniwek at September 26, 2020 08:34 PM (Cus5s) As an undergraduate I had to analyze various samples for various analytes, and being graded on how close you were to the correct analysis. The point was not intellectual, but rather a matter of technique. We quickly learned that touching, say, a crucible (after it had cooled, of course) transferred several milligrams of skin oil to it, enough to throw off the analysis from an "A" to a "C." A lot of 'science' relies heavily in finding a signal in the noise and reporting that signal as significant. An honest observer would question whether the signal was really measurable in the first place.
Recent example of this concept: COVID-19 researchers looking for a 'cure' tried substance 'z' on a dozen or so critical patients. Only 89.5% of those patients dies vs. 92.3% of all patients using 'x'. Therefore 'z' is a cure even if it only costs 100x what 'x' does. Which segues into another aspect rarely considered in research - incremental cost-benefit analysis. You can use dollars of duck feathers, it does not matter, for the metric here. "In the space of one hundred and seventy-six years the Lower Mississippi has shortened itself two hundred and forty-two miles. This is an average of a trifle over one mile and a third per year. Therefore, any calm person, who is not blind or idiotic, can see that in the Old Oolithic Silurian Period, just a million years ago next November, the Lower Mississippi River was upwards of one million three hundred thousand miles long, and stuck out over the Gulf of Mexico like a fishing rod. And by the same token any person can see that seven hundred and forty-two years from now the Lower Mississippi will be only a mile and three quarters long, and Cairo and New Orleans will have joined there streets together, and be plodding comfortably along under a single mayor and a mutual board of aldermen.
There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact."-- Life on the Mississippi (1883) Posted by: The Gipper Lives at September 26, 2020 08:54 PM (Ndje9) 339

"His visits are scarcely publicized beforehand, logistical details are closely held and his event venues serve as much as video studios as places of gathering. Barely anyone is allowed near the candidate." Social-distancing is virtuous, but surely his events could be hyped locally to make sure the public's aware that he's there even if physical attendance is limited. Why aren't they? Not exactly the same issue (reproducible results), but obviously the current C19 catastrophe (catastrophe for public health and science as institutions, I have in mind) joins "climate change" as the leading case of "science" being hijacked to cause enormous damage to society.
Prof. Levitt (Stanford Nobel laureate in biology) has the quintessential anecdote from the scientific side. When he contacted peers about his calculations on herd immunity etc., based on Diamond Princess and Swedish data, he says the response was "you shouldn't be saying this". Not a thing about his numbers. Nothing about his analysis - which he was looking for, and which a lifetime in science had led him to expect he would get in return - that's why he sent them the material! "You shouldn't be saying this" The shock on his face in the few interviews where he recounts this just emphasizes what a real scientist, like Levitt, is like. And whatever you want to call the others - well, how they're now acting. Jay, ever hear of Thomas Kuhn's "Structure of Scientific Revolutions"? History of science book from the 70s. Very interesting. Hrothgar was at a rally today. I hope he shows up and tells us about it.
Posted by: Ladyl at September 26, 2020 08:18 PM (TdMsT) {{{Ladyl }}} Indeed I shall, there was a Trump/Republican rally in rural (and I do mean rural) Virginia this afternoon. The weather was rainy/showers all morning and only stopped at about the planned start of the rally, my hope was that the sun would come out for the rally proper, but alas that did not happen. However the rain held off for several hours, and our estimate was that at a minimum the were a thousand plus vehicles there, and some had Maryland plates (not an easy drive), so it was very well attended. Side note, this would be about the equivalent of 15-20 % of the entire population of the county. They even had a ferry system set up so you could anchor your boat offshore and be dropped off at the pier and walk to the event. The really great part was that there looked to be many many youngish people (20-30) in attendance, and many had brought their children! Everyone was polite, happy, and neat (but after all, they were responsible Republicans) and easy to chat with! Great afternoon, and gave me hope for the future! so you noticed it is no longer a half gallon? I've heard that called "sizeflation" ... price stays the same, but the size gets smaller (and they hope if done incrementally, the consumer won't notice).
And they keep the same "Servings Per Container" with the reduced calorie count so that it now appears healthier than the previous full volume version. ------------------- Store brand vegetable juice is still the same size, but now with 80% potato juice. Richard Feynman warned about sloppy and fraudulent science in his 1974 Caltech commencement address, "Cargo Cult Science" (full text easily available via web search). Just because you call it science, wear a white lab coat, and copy some of the forms of science, doesn't make it science. It's not enough to search for evidence to prove your theory, you must also search for evidence to disprove it.
