Hi,
I comment on the book thread as CarolinaGirl but usually lurk on the Pet thread.
This is Podrick, my sweet dog who is now about 4 1/2. I got him from the local Animal Protection League in 2017. The shelter said he was an Australian cattle dog mix, but whatever he is, he’s the best boy ever. He has never climbed on furniture or chewed up a shoe, and gnawed just one book cover. He only barks when a stranger comes to door. Since mid-March he’s enjoyed being my coworker at home and has a gentle way of nudging me when it’s time for his mid-morning break. He’s been a super quarantine buddy!
(The name is from Game of Thrones ... the loyal squire. Perfect for such a good boy.)

fFIIGMO here, frequent visitor, occasional commenter: Attached is a photo of our sweet Maylie (named after Mrs. Maylie in Oliver Twist), a Labradoodle unlike any other. She had issues (knee surgery, digestive stuff) but was absolutely a wonderful, loving soul. Just lost her 8/3/20 after almost 12 years. RIP sweet Maylie.

So sorry to hear of Maylie's passing. She certainly was a cute sweetie. Thank you for your contribution.

This is my boyfriend's cat Rascal. We recently spent a week at the beach and stayed at a pet-friendly 100 year old beach house rental. I had my two little chihuahuas Flynn and Cori with me, and my boyfriend brought along his pet cat Rascal, who's a lot bigger than the two dogs combined. Cori is 5 months old, and she and Rascal played chase and shared toys while Flynn watched complacently. Rascal is a talker and an indoor-outdoor kitty, and while he didn't really like the beach, he tolerated his confinement admirably. This was his spot when he wanted to get away from the dogs and look out the window at the beach. As you can see, he's very photogenic! Thanks, Bird from Georgia.

My goodness, traveling with 2 dogs and a cat? Brave souls you are. It sounds like a fun adventure was had by all. Thanks for sharing.

This is sweet River. She was living in a junk yard as a puppy when a rescue group picked her up. My son adopted her and she stayed at our house until he could move. My husband kept asking when he was going to come get his dog. Now we say to my son “you will never get this dog.” We love her so much! She’s smart, funny and just so adorable. Living in that junk yard made her clever and crafty, both traits that are irresistible.

Tracy submitted her dog's photo and story a couple of weeks ago. Somehow my dogs goofed up the computer and River didn't get in. So let's try again. A wonderful ending to what could have been a sad story for River.

Don't see too many birds on the pet thread, so I would like for you to consider Peanut. He is a White Bellied Caique (type of parrot). He is about 9 years old and should live into his 40's. Peanut is similar a Marine in that he is fearless and loyal. I also have 3 cats in the house and they DO NOT MESS with the bird (they learned the hard way). Hope this makes the cut. Regards David

I've been threatening to send pix of our cats for so long! Finally got
around to it, but only after picking up two new cats!!

Charlie, Ony, and Spirit are our three long-time housecats, about whom
I've often told stories on the Pet Thread. I've told their "how we got
them" stories in the past, but I will spare you today. They enjoy the
comforts of a big rural yard and lots of cushy inside places. Working
cats, as I often say, keeping the vermin down, and alerting us when
some critter gets in the house that they won't eat.
Pic #2:
On Saturday before Labor Day, Milady and I made a rare trip to our
in-town "office," to pick up some things. As "fortuitous coincidence"
would have it, we found a family, heading through town, stopped for a
minute in our parking lot; their two young boys were trying to catch
the two tiny kittens who had come up to them. We joined in the ensuing
comic chase scene (worthy of the great Duck artist Don Rosa).
Guess who ended up with the kits. Hint: not that traveling family.
Not sure what will become of them. Today (day after Labor Day) we have
to decide. Our three cats were very rude to them, and we aren't really
in a position to take on two new kittens. Daughter and Son-in-Law took
them for a night while we were out of town, which became two nights
(heh! so far). Their dog really took to them. As did Daughter & SiL.

Meet Macie and Charlie Brown. This pair is inseparable and extremely adorable. Macie (light brown on face) is Miss Grace's daughter and a little more feisty. Charlie is a prince and follows Macie's lead. Both enjoy dressing up for the holidays, tummy and back rubs and lots of treats.

This is the kitten who appeared in Publius' garage 3 weeks ago. He wasn't more than 6 weeks old then, and we have no idea what happened to his mother or siblings. We've named him Cato after Clouseau's sidekick, because he's an ambusher and an ankle-biter. He's already grown by more than 50% since then. Harli isn't happy about him, but he's fascinated by her and wants her to be his mommy. Today we couldn't find him anywhere, but he turned up napping in Publius' cap.
Also, I have a question for the cat folks here: Harli needs a special diet for kidney function, and she doesn't like the Purina recipe. Does anyone have any tips regarding this? -Miley

It certainly appears that this little critter has moved into your hearts - big time. I hope there are people who can help out with your cat chow question. Does your vet have any ideas?

7 I asked my catfood question on last week's Pet Thread. Since then I consulted with the vet, who thinks Harli should eat only special formula. Royal Canin has a morsels-in-gravy option (at almost $2 per 3-oz can - oy!), which I've ordered in the hope that she'll eat it. If so, maybe I can mix some of the Purina ($2 per 6-oz can) in with it.
Pets can be costly. What are you gonna do?
Meanwhile, Cato has become a stalk-and-pounce monster. Harli has to go outside to be left in peace (he's still an indoor cat). Swats, hisses and growls do not deter him. He actually tries to horn in at her food bowl. A very strong-willed kitty.

9 I have a 10 year old springer. I've talked about Gary before. I've had him about three years, don't know a lot about his medical history. I took him into the vets because I thought he might be running a fever. And I thought there was a little wheeze to his breathing. By the time I was able to get him in, it was pretty obvious he had an ear infection.

We have that system where you can't go in with your pet. I talked to the vet tech. She said he had ear infections and a broken tooth. Said we needed to get him in right away to pull the tooth. This was set for Friday.

I got cold feet and canceled it. I'm probably going to reschedule. But I want to minimize risk to him. They said they would do blood work to check for underlying issues. No one answered my question about his breathing. And if there are any issues, I'll have to take him to an emergency vet as they are closed on the weekend.

This vet did removed a couple of fatty tissues and infected teeth from my older dog. He removed teeth from one of the cats. But he was wrong on the two cats that died this year. I'm having a rough year and I don't want to lose this dog. Any thoughts on this? Am I just being freaked out over nothing? Should I have them x-ray his heart and lungs? I was worried about my tooth extraction too but my dentist didn't need general anesthesia for that.

12 When I was out walking earlier today, I met a man who had a beautiful Husky. Very friendly, and almost completely white, just a couple of vanilla patches on her arms. He said the pure white ones were pretty uncommon.

I know dental issues in humans can cause serious infections that can lead to death, so I'd probably try to balance potential problems against others.

I've had a broken tooth before, too, and just the little hairline crack was uncomfortable as heck. Hurt to chew and I'd have bad headaches by the end of the day until it was fixed.

22 He's been pretty reasonable, price wise. I should poke around and see if I can spot the broken tooth. Back in the old days, there wasn't doggy dentistry. One of my dogs then had the tip broken off a canine and nothing was done about it. My old dog was definitely better after the bad tooth was pulled. I really didn't need the extra stress.

Not our house. Our three old pheline pharts aren't taking new applicants. No whippersnappers in the retirement home.

So, the two kittens are still with Daughter & SiL. Kits have been accepted by the two young frisky dogs, the half-blind old cat, and especially the hoomans. Bonded, y'might say.

The usually-wilder of the two dogs gently plays with and guards the kittens like they're her own babies, nuzzling their bellies and interrupting them if they roughhouse too strongly with each other.

Furthermore, in totally new behavior, that dog now rests a paw (petting) on the old cat as she does the kits. And old cat even seems to appreciate it.

Is there anything kitten therapy can't do!?!

26 I'd have wanted the vet to prescribe some antibiotics for the dog to be taking for X days before they did any tooth pooling.

Only reason I can think they would not is fear that the owners figure they can skip the tooth extraction if the pet is too much improved with the antibiotics, but it seems like it would be safer to have the infection being addressed first.

31 Miley, Science diet has a good variety of special diet foods. If you are willing to pay the cash, talk to your vet about prescription food. Our dog and cat are both on prescription food and are doing really, really well on it.

We pay more for their food than for ours, but it's worth it to not have sick animals.

37 That poster at the top reminds me of a video I saw yesterday about the Shiba Inu, which I think is one of the prettiest dogs in the world.
Anyhow owners were demonstrating agility but they all made the same comment about being uncertain if the dog would be willing to do the routine that day.
It appears Shiba's are stubborn and independent. If they don't feel like performing they don't perform.
That reminds me of one of my granddaughters.

41 Great pets all around. But I have a soft spot for donkies. Years ago I hauled feed and supplies to small farms. One farm had a donkey that adopted me. She would plant her forehead against my chest (it helps to be tall) and lower her ears. I couldn't leave until she got a few minutes of head and neck skritches. She was the sweetest thing.

The lovely Miss Delilah was Specialty Best in Show and Best Owner-Handled under judge Sandy Simmons-Gamble at today's Lone Star Borzoi Club show in Belton, TX. Through August, Lila is #4 in Breed and tied for #3 in All-Breed competition. If she's one of the top 5 in Breed through the end of October she gets an automatic invitation to Westminster.

And in another pleasant episode at the show, the Borzoi Club of America awarded its 2020 AKC Sportsmanship Trophy - given to those who exemplify the code of sportsmanship and have make contributions to the national club - to a Texas breeder/exhibitor who was at the show.

She's not one of the big names but I can't think of anyone (apart from Her Majesty, who got the award in 201

more deserving. She always has a pleasant word for people, competes hard but fair and congratulates the winners when she loses. She and her husband are regular show vendors and have always provided sweepstakes awards at cost for supported entries and specialties.

It's nice to see virtue rewarded. I bet she burst into tears when she was told.

When the entire show was at Madison Square Garden, it was a real pain in the patoot. The show is one of the few remaining benched shows; that is, the dogs have to be on display all day. The benching arrangements were very cramped and there was very little grooming space. My joke was that it combined the hospitality of the Bataan Death March with the physical comforts of the Black Hole of Calcutta. Still, it was a thrill to step out on the green carpet in the arena for breed competition.

With the renovations to MSG, only variety groups and Best in Show are held there. Breed competition is at one of the piers. There's more room and the benching isn't quite as bad, but parking is still a pain and, frankly, the atmosphere is lost. It's like any other dog show now.

66 Another addition to Shep's Place yesterday. Dusty is a 10 year old husky shepherd mix and she is just adorable. One ear is permantly up and the other permantly down. She's loves attention and I gave her plenty today.

Joe, the Rotti mix had to be moved to the kitchen and he's not happy. He's gotten into all sorts of trouble.

67 Per the doggie Doc that I managed to convince to marry me 26 years ago, the antibiotics are started before extraction because the bacteria in the mouth can migrate to other parts of the body during extraction, getting knocked about and such.

I've never been fond of Rottweilers. They just don't do it for me. Love love Beagles unless they start barking! German Shepherds are great dogs. We had a female many years, her name was Gretchen. Wonderful with kids and very affectionate. She got hip dysplasia and had to eventually be put down.

77 Miley -- My cat, Tiger, is in the early stages of kidney failure. We tried our very best to get him to eat the special kidney diet food, but all he did was follow us around and complain at the top of his lungs. We finally gave up. His life will be shorter, but we did the best we could. This has happened to a couple friends, too. If the cat refuses to cooperate, there doesn't seem to be much to do except try and keep him happy. 78 I owned two beagles years ago (husband #1 was a hunter), they were sisters. Great dogs. We have a senior beagle at Sheps, her name is Lucy. Poor old gal just shuffles around but she LOVES to be outside. She'll follow me from room to room but she's not a cuddler. She doesn't mind being petted you'll never get her on your lap.

Lucy has had a really rough 10 days. The smoke and horrible air quality made her really nervous and skittish and clingy. I felt horrible leaving her every day to go to work.

Today we have clean air. The windows are open and she's in her tower looking at the chirp chirps.

Still a little clingy though. It's scary breathing smoke all the time. The caveman part of your brain tells you to gtf OUT! RUN! Why are you not leaving?!?!

80 I've never owned one, but I love rotties. The one's I've visited have been so chill and polite. Like they know they can take you down if needed so they feel no need to put on any sort of tough guy act and they aren't hyper like dobies can be. So of course god sent me a little 30 lb terrierist mutt this spring. She's pretty fun, but no one would ever describe her as chill.

I stopped the fluids months ago, couldn't administer by myself and the vet wouldn't let me be with he if they did it. And the special diet. Ugh. She hated it.

So, she's happy. Maybe her life will be shorter. But I would rather have a shorter happy life than a longer miserable one.

85 I had a rottweiler. She was the runt of the litter. They'd gotten a male that was bigger and was picking on her. So they chose to rehome her. She was a wonderful dog. My husband would take her out in the woods with our lab. She was always well behaved.

87 Dad's cat Tommy had to have the K/D diet food. After the initial thrill he wasn't too keen on the wet stuff but ate the kibble OK and dad would give him some canned for variety. Tommy was drinking plenty of water and the extra liquid was the big rationale for the canned stuff.

My sister has a cat that needed the extra fluids. Instead of the subcutaneous route she got one of those self purifying cat fountains. The kind where the water comes out of a plastic flower suspended over a bowl that continuously pumps water through a set of filters. The cat seems to like it enough and stays better hydrated.

100 JAS. My horse vet, whose wife does small animal clinic work told me that with most dogs, the vets and techs are having an easier time with the COVID rules. The dogs aren't going into "protect my human" mode and are way more chill for the exams and stuff.

106 My wife and I have owned show dogs for over ten years now. We've spent more than our fair share of time and expense traveling in our motorhome, going from show to show chasing points.

Only my wife shows our dogs. I just drive the bus and help her out ringside with bait, drool rags, squirt water bottles, and cooling coats. It gets pretty old after awhile -- at least for me -- but she enjoys it. Plus, we've made some lifelong friends out of it, so it's all good.

We've been to Westminster twice with entries and once just to support a friend who was competing. It's true that showing in Manhattan is a pain in the ass, but it's also pretty exciting.

Last year our youngest bitch finished ninth nationally in breed for owner-handled thus receiving an invitation to the AKC Championships in Orlando. We went. Our bitch didn't do shit, but it was a good time and the Orange County Convention Center is a fantastic venue for a national dog show.

Little Musya went to the doggie chiropractor for an adjustment this morning. She took the experience very well, quietly cooperated and enjoyed the treats the technician gave her. She yelped once when something got released. I hope she has less discomfort now.

Older cats and kittens -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Arizona the part-Maine Coon didn't want any other cats, no matter the age. Little Oreo, who was elderly, was overwhelmed by kitten Tatiana, and while they got along, it was not a close friendship. My current thugs were both young adults when they met, and they became friends in an hour.

Rusty, my boyhood cat, was not enamored of tabby L'il Bit when I brought her home, but they bonded within a few days. When Rusty, who was quite a bit older, passed away four years later, Mom said, L'l Bit spent a good part of the day trotting around the house and calling for him.

129 Agree. If you start them young, showing them in funsies puppy matches then going right into competing as class dogs starting at six months old, they pick it up and develop pretty quickly. Most of our dogs seem to enjoy it. Our oldest bitch, who is retired now, never liked it much. She's a beautiful bitch, comes real close to the breed standard, finished as a grand champion at 11 months old, but never seemed to be having fun. Oh well...

131 We almost lost our male cat to urinary track blockage due to crystals build up. Luckily i saw the signs and our experienced vet took care of the problem. There was no kidney damage fortunately. Now all our cats are on Hills Select urinary and hairball control. Not a prescription kibble but prevents crystal build up. We have a water fountain. It gets them to drink more water than they used to.

Matter of fact I do know a bit about this.

We tried several renal diet formulations without success, but our cat has renal failure too, and is pretty stable on his current diet.

We use Hills prescription diet, k/d. The vegetable and tuna stew is the one you probably need. There's a k/d chicken but our cat just won't eat it, and our vet said that wasn't uncommon. The tuna one is formulated for increased palatability.

Ask your vet if your cat needs a phosphate binder. We use an aluminium hydroxide phosphate binder. I mention it because our vet also told us that besides controlling phosphate levels in the blood, it actually improves the palatability of foods for some cats. A bit like salt on your food?

Another thing to try-- heat up the food to blood-warm in the microwave before giving it. If your Harli is like our cat, she's maybe a little older and her nose doesn't work as well. Warmer food is easier to smell, and more enjoyable to eat. I mix it up with my finger so there aren't any hotspots-- Mrs. Flamethrower finds this a bit offputting but you do what you've gotta. We found this got our little bugger to eat a lot more consistently, although it also helps to put him directly in front of the food when we put it out, because he doesn't see particularly well either.

Our dry food recommendation would be the Royal Canin renal support diet-- ours likes the "F" flavor, which I think is fish? Whatever it is, he's quite fond of it.

Both are available on Chewy with a vet's prescription, so you can cost them out in advance. Fair warning that neither is cheap, but I wouldn't call the prices outrageous. Ours doesn't really eat a full can of food at a sitting, either, so we refrigerate it and give it in 3rds, so it stretches quite a ways, actually. End of life care in pets always puts a hole in the budget, unfortunately.

Warming the food sounds like a decent idea - certainly couldn't hurt to to try!
I feel strongly that quality of life is more important than length of life. That will guide my choices as we go on. Easier said than done.
