Good afternoon and welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Hopefully you are underway in a 3 day weekend. Enjoy the world of animals.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

Meet The PetMorons

This is Dhabi. As a little puppy he was rescued from a desert workers camp in Abu Dhabi. The first time he ever saw grass was when arrived in Tennessee - he loved it. Abu is Arabic for "good or great." Dhabi means "gazelle." He certainly runs like one. - Tim

Hmmm an interesting story. I wish there was more. I suspect he also enjoys the cooler weather in TN. Thanks for sharing Dhabi with us.

Well "the boys" (Bingo and Eli) are putting up with another move, this year. We finally found everyone's "forever home"! They still enjoy their doggy car seats for the 500 mile drives between houses but are glad to be done! Here they are enjoying the new couch in the new house.

Thanks for your Pet Thread and letting us share adventures with you. - South Dakota lurker.

What an adorable pair of pups. So do they need a ramp to become couch potatoes? Thanks for lurking and coming out to share this story with us.

From JohnFNotKerry:

Red is a very good boy who is over 12 years old. He is a retired autism service dog for our son, and he is enjoying his golden years as our family dog. He is a "German Retriever", being half German Shepherd and half Golden Retriever. He and his siblings were bred to be service dogs. Sadly, he is the last one who is still alive.

Mika is our 4 year old cat, who we got after our first cat Sneaker passed away in 2016. He was featured here many years ago. Mika is obsessed with food, and she would be a major chonk if we I indulged her more. She is very affectionate and talkative, bringing lots of laughter to our home.

Red must be one very sweet dog since he was a service animal. Mika is the perfect example of a pet, one who brings joy to your world. Sweet critters you have there. What a wonderful contribution today.

This picture is from back in 2004. This is Noodle and Banjo on a camping trip. Noodle is a white Anatolian Shepherd Dog who weighed in at about 120 lbs. We got her from an awesome breeder out of NC. She was a wedding gift to my wife and me. Anatolians are bred to sit in fields by themselves and guard goats from wolves in Turkey. They are bred to be on their own and think for themselves. As a result, Anatolians are absurdly stubborn dogs when it comes to training. We had some heated training sessions but she turned into the greatest dog to ever walk the planet. So calm, so sweet and great off leash even though Anatolians are supposed to be nearly impossible to train off leash. She never strayed far and always came back when called. Whatever their stubbornness, the upside to Anatolian's personalities is that they are extremely loyal. That she was. We lost her at 10 years old to cancer.

Little Banjo in the picture is an Australian Cattle Dog. He's about 5 months old in this pic. The reason I'm sending this now is that we just recently lost him after over 15 years. He might be the second best dog ever after Noodle. Unlike Noodle who came from an excellent breeder, we paid $50 for Banjo. Cattle dogs can be obnoxious bastards and he certainly was but he was also the smartest and most loyal guy you'll meet. Noodle and Banjo were the best of buds. RIP Noodle and Banjo. - Andrew

What an outstanding photo! I hope that you have it enlarged, frame and displayed in your home. So sorry that both of your pals have passed over the Rainbow Bridge.

Hi MisHum,

Here is a pic of our 1+ yr. old White German Shephard, Maggie, doing her favorite thing - fetching a tennis ball in the water. She was a natural at swimming and maybe a reincarnation of Esther Williams. Just have to teach her to dive now.

She has kind of an interesting history - the breeder sold her and brother at 8 wks. to a skeevy couple who reneged on payment. She called FBI and after a few months, FBI found her because white shepherds aren't very common and was parked at some doggie resort in CA. Apparently skeevy couple was wanted for fraud from a number of other scams. Maggie came to us at 8 mths and after working out some behavior and medical kinks, she's a wonderful dog. - Last

Long time lurker, Crash from Bama here. This crew is a result of my kids. Agrippa is the Rhodesian Ridgeback. 100 pounds but wants to sit in your lap. Dixie ( can I say that? ) is the mutt closest in the pic. Gentlest dog ever unless a rodent gets in our yard. The retriever mix preening for the camera is Zeus. Barks a lot but won't leave my side. The small black one is Ophelia. She wants to stay outside 24/7. The bed gets awful crowded at night.

Yes, you may say Dixie here. Great group of pooches you have there. And no, the meme above the fold was not based upon your herd of doggehs.

11 Got exciting news from Shep's Place where I volunteer. Callie and Sophie found their forever homes. Callie has hip dysplasia so I was shocked someone took her but grateful they will be willing to spend the time with her. The vet said it eventually will get to a point where she would have to be helped to go potty. For now she can manage on her own. So grateful for these people who take on senior dogs.

14 Afternoon Horde!

Miss Dolly (our 6 yr old Brittany) is quite good about the bed. Her spot is at the foot on my side, where she can watch the hall and the stairwell at the end for my arrival.

She's not a bed hog at all. All she wants is a few minutes of cuddles and belly rubs before lights out.

We did have a bit of excitement last night. When I called her to come inside, she made a detour on the way to the door to swoop something up off the ground.

I figured it was either a toy she took outside, or a rawhide chewy, which she does tend to take out to let them age and tenderize in the rain.

She blew by me and dropped the item in the dining room. Surprisingly, the thing she dropped made some twitches!

On the floor was a juvenile opossum. It was barely breathing and making feeble leg twitches. And its face was in a sharp-toothed grimace of pain.

Apparently, Dolly had caught it, crunched its ribcage, but didn't shake enough to snap its widdle neck. She kept it close and under surveillance, though.

Mrs IMG declined to inspect this.

I scooped it up in a dustpan (it was about 10 inches snout-to-base of tail) and went outside and flung it over the dog-pen fence.

The corpse was gone by sunrise.

17 Jake, the young springer, comes to bed with me at night. But he's not comfortable. He'll get on the floor then back on the bed. When he's had enough, he gets on the bed and lays his head across me. That's when he wants out of the bedroom.

I feel bad because Gary, the other springer, would love to sleep in the bedroom by me. But he scared my cat by barking at her. She lives in the bedroom and it doesn't seem fair to have her deal with him in her space. I really need to work on getting the two of them to be buddies.

31 My tale of stress:

I was moving dried food into different containers and there was an old plastic scoop that I had used to move food from the old containers into the new ones. Somehow that plastic scoop wound up on the floor with a trace of food dust on it. Since Conor is convinced he is slowly being starved to death, he made off with the scoop, and I didn't notice quickly enough. Next thing I knew, he was chewing on the scoop trying to get every last trace of flavor out of it. The stressful part is that he apparently managed to break off a small piece of the scoop and I was never able to find it. Crawled around on the floor with a flashlight for more than half an hour. He has since eaten three meals, gone for a walk and done three poops without apparent incident. I think I will wait until I see him in distress before I go the emergency vet route.
I have other family business the rest of the day that requires me to leave him alone until later tonight, so I hope he will be OK.

41 In the past couple of weeks with our cats...

My fuzzy golden buddy Charlie caught and brought inside some large rodent. (Did I mention this last week?) Did not inspect what, in my haste to throw them back outside. (Mercifully, Charlie did not drop his prey while I picked him up.)

Charlie gets praise and treats for his rodent kills. Not so much the adult female cardinal.

Rather than chow down, he left both kills for me to pick up. Paper towels, ziplock bag. Wash hands thoroughly afterward, even though there was no contact with the critter corpses.

The old gray kitty Spirit still has it. She brought in a mouse. Again, Milady could pick her up and throw her out and Spirit didn't drop the mouse on the way. Yay. (Don't know, but figure Spirit feasted on her catch.)

Charlie has a special kind of growling mew to let us know he's got something. (Totally different from his "wake up and let me out and feed me" morning call, or his squeak that we swear sound very much like "Yogurt!" Milady spoils him.) Big surprise was, he made the same sound when Spirit brought her mouse in.

Working farm cats.

Thankfully, Ajax has always instinctively not wanted to actually catch the rabbit or squirrel. Even when he has them cold and dead to rights, he will slow down just before he reaches them and let the little bastards get up the tree or into the brush or through the fence.

I wonder if wild animals have a sixth sense that another animal is tame. Saw a funny cartoon once about a dog and a wolf. The wolf is a tough street fighter and comes to the dog's aid one night when the dog fails to protect the chickens and the farmer beats him. They have a long talk and the wolf mentions some of the dog's behavior towards him -- almost getting him killed, running him off when he's hungry etc. The dog sighs. "I was just doing my job."

61 For a second there, looking at Mika, I thought MisHum had posted a pic of my big black Wolf. A shame it is that black cats are thought of by some silly people as "bad luck" or "evil" or "might have a demon inside," as one woman told Linda about her black cat Marie, years ago.

I'll admit that a black cat often has a wild or ferocious look to his face and expression. And the cat himself might be wild or ferocious. But if not, and you look beyond their exterior, black cats in my experience are often the most easygoing and adaptable of any.

The late Marie-Antoinette was the only cat I've ever known who liked to sleep under the blanket with me. Only on afternoon naps, for some reason. She'd leap up and nuzzle at the top of the sheet; I'd lift it; she'd go in, turn around, and stretch out next to me (usually hitting me in the throat with a paw as she stretched); and relax. Sometimes she'd stay only a few minutes; other times, she'd be there with me still when I woke up.

I've been trying to get Wolf to do the same, but he doesn't care for the sheet and blanket touching his head.

72 Well! After technical struggles, details of which I will not share, I FINALLY got some kitty pix off Milady's cell. Going to try to composite a single pic and get it off to MisHum.
_____

'Nother cat tale: Our cats spend a lot of time outside. They're safe enough, staying close to the house; there's an open door for them.

When it gets dark, we bring them in.

In recent weeks, Charlie seems to have a good time-sense, and comes inside on his own, which is our cue to make sure the other two are in, and close the door.

Sometimes, lately, I'll go out on the porch and tell them it's time to come in, and they all actually come in under their own steam. Cats doing that! Amazing! They're all getting kind-of old, so it's reassuring they know to stay close and come in.

When we can't find them, we have a talk with the St Francis statue (which we bought for, and then inherited from Milady's late and sainted mother). When Spirit wasn't showing up night before last, Milady had just enough time to finish a request to St Frank, and suddenly, there was Spirit! Funny how often it works.

Wish my prayers to the patron saints of lost and hopeless causes worked as readily.

The first dog that I called mine was a white German Shepard. Truly a beautiful specimen!

My parents had a female bred, and the resulting litter produced Snow (I'm good with dog names am I not). I was four at the time, so I spent more time in the puppy pen than outside it. Snow and I gravitated to each other immediately. She ended up being a little too protective of me, much to my mother's dislike.

She, along with one other pup (Col. Mosby) stayed with us. The other six litter mates were adopted out.

My family was good friends with a couple, the husband was a rocker of some note. They had two traditional GS that I often dog sat for when I was a teen.

The male was huge, biggest GS I've ever seen. He was Otis, named for Otis Redding. The female was also good size and she was Aretha, I bet you can figure out where that came from.

They became very protective of me. When I would take them on walks it was like I was walking two lions, people gave us a wide berth. In truth they were marshmallows but they looked fierce.

Always had a soft spot for shepherds.

I grew up watching the Rin Tin Tin Western TV series and reading the Whitman novels based on it. Always wanted a Rinty, or a collie like Lassie. Now I realize I'm a cat person, always have been. But at age 9 I wanted to have adventures with my dog. . . .

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at September 05, 2020 05:18 PM (rpbg1)

96 Lets see how this works. Wifi tethered tablet to my cell phone.

Visiting Dad, for storm damage recovery in central Louisiana. He really didn't have anything damaged and only had a handfull of small branches down.

Getting to see his two kitties, Kitler, and Snowbie as well as his pit bull, Spartus.

Dog is as smart as a teenager and even though he hasnt seen me in two years, he broke out a great big doggie smile and whole body tail wag when he saw me.

Snowbie, this is a cat of pallor not an albino so hate away, recognized me too and wanted head scritches.

Kitler, barely lets me see his goose stepping mustache as he dissappears under the house.

Spartus was raised as an orphan puppy in a cattery so he thinks he's a cat. The cats groom him, he tries to gromm them back but its all slobber and they dont like it.

Gonna fix the headlight dimmer on Dad's Harley tomorrow and head back home to Smash and Ju ior-ette on Monday.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. One of my favorite things about the Dead is there is a mountain of work to go through and you always seem to find something new, not just songs and styles but shows.

They not only allowed but welcomed taping of their shows and they were first and foremost a live band. They didn't do shows, they played and no two shows were ever the same. I've been a fan since I was younger than 29 and I still hear new stuff all the time.

As Jerry said one time about the Dead, The Dead are like licorice. Not everyone like licorice but those that do really like licorice.

I think this would have be a good breed for you WA...a lot of cat lovers find happiness with Shepherds because of their unusual intelligence. They're almost human. They are loyal like cats, and really loving toward family members regardless of age or temperament - my wife had one when I first met her...he guarded her closely like the breed is taught, but he also seemed to understand the social relationship of humans. He liked me - I think he had good taste!

Never listened to the Dead until I got to college. The Europe '72 album is great.

Great looking animals this week. My cousin lost his dog, Maverick, last month at the age of 16, who was one of the smartest dogs I ever met. I'll submit a picture for next week. He loved playing with basically anyone, and he always was gentle with children. My cousin and I roughhoused with him to his wife's dismay. My cousin is still devastated about losing him. Fortunately, he has three other dogs.

The hip dysplasia issue would concern me these days. I see too many GSs walking around so painfully these days. One really has to know and trust the breeder they purchase a GS from.

I heard that was the trick from others who owned the breed - King died in the mid-90s, probably the saddest day for me, I absolutely loved that dog/ But he was feed the standard diet and he shed constantly. I think if we had him back, we would have gone all raw...

118 Pyrenees Anatolian cross breeds are epic farm dogs. Not for the first time dog owners. Great dogs though. That coat though. Thick three layers with a main like a big cat. Mine is a goofball. Independent and patient he will sit for hours when he's working waiting to help. Service dog (mobility) he wears a hard leather harness I use him as a counter weight of for support. Great dog. He even will sit through a two hour mass quietly. With hundreds of other people around.

Actually I am glad you mentioned this - our lovely shepherd died from complications associated from this very issue and this seems to be a real problem with the breed - I think I saw somewhere that females are particularly vulnerable to this issue. It cuts they're life short at the 12 t0 13 year mark...

123 I agree whole-heartedly on GSDs. We're on our 4th, now. I submitted him this week for the pet thread, but looks like MisHum had more than enough of fine furry family to choose from (be on the lookout for Tucker, hopefully in the future).
Our new family member is already amazing at only 6 months old. And YES... they literally shed hair more than Joe Bribem gaffes, after they molt. Yes, shepherd puppies molt.
Ours now looks nothing like he did when I brought him home, in terms of color and markings. Up until he was about 3 months old, he didn't shed a hair.
But, we live with it because they really are the best of breeds.
