Wealthy Families, and Their High Taxable Incomes, Are Fleeing New York... Forever

Escape from New York, the Post calls the new imperative.

Due to increasingly squalid conditions on the Upper West Side, including two new homeless shelters packed with junkies and registered sex offenders, longtime dwellers are departing the Big Apple with no plans to ever return.

One of the Escape from New Yorkers is Elizabeth Carr, one of the area's most vocal leaders in combating mounting crime in the well-heeled 'hood. She was an administrator of the Facebook group NYC Moms for Safer Streets, and the face of a public-safety movement that has attracted thousands to demand better policing and city services.

"In the best of times, NYC is a hard place to live," said Carr. "Now you have all this other stuff. It's a question for families... to have to see a guy masturbating on the corner or explain to my kids while I'm buying diapers at Duane Reade why this guy wearing no shoes is collapsed on the floor and they’re doing CPR on him."

...

Crimes committed over the past several days would've been unheard of a year ago in the quiet neighborhood that’s home to Lincoln Center and restaurants by Daniel Boulud. A 40-year-old woman was randomly stabbed in the 72nd Street subway station at noon Thursday; a 56-year-old man was sucker-punched while dining outdoors with his wife Wednesday night; photos were posted online of a man masturbating on the steps of the New York Historical Society; and onlookers witnessed an apparent overdose in the aisle of a Duane Reade across the street from the Lucerne Hotel.

...

Carr said one friend couldn’t find a broker to take on her apartment listing at 72nd and Columbus, normally a desirable spot, because conditions were so bad.

...

“There was no reason to leave before,” said a born-and-bred Upper West Side mom, who asked for anonymity. “Now, I’m done. I can leave tomorrow and never look back. If I never came back to this block, that would be fine.”

The six-months-pregnant mother of a toddler daughter just put her apartment of a decade near the Lucerne up for sale.

"I have definitely seen more crime, drugs and harassment in one week than in my whole experience growing up here," she said. "I don't want to see a child get hurt or raped, before they realize maybe it was a mistake to put [hundreds of] drug addicts and sex offenders near schools in the most dense residential population in the city."

...

"As a parent, this isn't the place I once knew. I feel like NYC is disappearing so fast and no one’s doing anything," said the tile manufacturer, who drags her two boys to work with her so they’re not fending for themselves outside alone. "There's nowhere for them to go. I don't want to feel afraid, and I don't want my children to be scared to go outside."

They've literally killed the cities. This is going to be the most transformative shift in 100 years.

29 I've told the anecdote before but it's appropriate here. Two of my seasonal neighbors from NYC have permanently relocated here. The most profound used to be chief of the foreign investment desk at one of the biggest investment firms in the world. He grew up in my town and always owned a summer home here, but he's relocated him - and his family (he bought all of the houses near his summer house in our neighborhood) who were from Boston and SF to our neighborhood. His Manhattan condo is on the rental market for something like $37k a month or something. Dude is building a helipad on the lot next to his house where he knocked down the house that used to be there.

My other neighbor is the self-purported manager of ...damnit... whats the name... Stevie Nix' band from back in the day.... Anyways... they always had a house they would come up to on the weekends and for holidays. They've permanently moved in as well. Just got the pool re-lined and heated. Just the other day a huge truck full of new furniture arrived.

My realtor (also my best friend) said that I could put my house on the market right now for double what I paid for it in 2016 and I'd get a cash offer in a week. He says that being a buyer's agent right now is like jumping in a mosh pit.

36 I'm worried, however, that a few large Cities have yielded a blue vote "sink" due to young people moving to them and concentrating their votes in 90-10 districts and largely outside of the swing states. Even in, say, Pennsylvania, the number of young people moving to Philadelphia after college instead of the collar counties is probably what has kept those Districts competitive up to now. Maybe urban living skews you to the left, whereas meeting the typical milestones of middle class life (marriage>home ownership>kids) would skew the same people to the right - but I don't think the latter is altogether affordable for young people now anyway so they'll just be tattooed suburban shitbirds fucking up suburban politics.

That's the only way I can understand why they are doing this.

Posted by: bluestatehostage at August 12, 2020 04:17 PM (yQw8t)

84 It's a triple whammy:

1. Many people and employers have come to realize that all of the employees or students do not have to be under the same roof at the same time. Indeed, maybe some of those employees weren't needed at all.

2. The shock of the George Floyd riots and everything that followed after, including the planned campaign of urban guerrilla warfare that is still not yet fully developed. There will be bombings and assassinations later this year. But clearly the authorities no longer have a lid on the criminals and terrorists.

3. The realization that the subway in particular, and high population density in general, are a really bad idea during a pandemic. The next one may not be so mild.

Yet to come:

4. Cuts in services and increases in taxes as revenues decline for the cities, but pension obligations, health care obligations, and transfer payments increase.

Get the hell out while you can.

My suggestion if so is Quetiapine Fumerate, AKA Seroquel, if you can get your doc to prescribe it.

You never know when somebody might counter much, much higher. Every negotiation needs to start somewhere, and they're all different. The realtor is doing a huge disservice to their client.

Posted by: Ace at 04:08 PM

Well, they've killed some cities. Cities like NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, Portland, Seattle.

Ironically, cities like Detroit are doing better. Because there the Mayor and police dept are not allowing this BS.

That's really all it will take to turn all the rest of the cities around. Enforce the laws and prosecute and jail the lawbreakers and this stuff will stop. Pretty simple.

Giuliani turned around NYC once before. All these cities can be turned around in similar fashion if the proper leaders are put in place.

It's really up to the local electorate. They can either flee the cities, stay and vote out the radical and vote in good leaders or stay and vote for more of the same.

289 To be fair did they expect me to masturbate someplace low class like a Sbarro?

Kidding aside, NYC was always my favorite place to just go and walk around. I'd get off from work and walk from midtown to WTC, enjoying every bit of the city. Over the last few years i noticed things getting worse. First the area around the post office by MSG would have dozens of homeless sleeping there. Soon you'd see more visable homeless outside Madison Sq Park (in the plazas of office buildings) and Union Square. More recently there were passed out homeless in Tribeca and the area north of WTC, something you'd almost never see.

I haven't been in NYC since things shut down in March, but I can imagine how it must be between the nutcases set free under the guise of protecting them from Covid, and the general street trash that would come into Manhattan to rob and assault people before scattering back to their boroughs. Both groups know they are now free to do as they please, with high odds we get quarterly looting sprees by those who want their reparations.

Even when Wilhelm is out of office it probably won't get better, because the idiots and white hipster transplants will vote it an AOC type to take his place, making things much worse. Add to that all the big corporations bowing down to the BLM mob and I don't see things getting better until there is a low point like the 80s and early 90s.

I'd really like to see the connections between those supporting Wilhelm and BLM, and those who start snatching up cheap real estate, hopefully they find a link and toss them in jail for market manipulation....where they end up getting shanked.

I always said my lotto dream would be a house in Tribeca, a few specifics come to mind, but i don't think my NYC of 6 months ago is going to be there anymore thanks to these commie f*ckers who should be dumped out in the ocean. Now i'd probably be happier in a house in the Montana woods.

Same for NYC. I used to love visiting (for business or pleasure) and now... Not even if you paid me.

Ace, you are spot on. If they had planned to "fundamentally transform" the cities, they succeeded. Combine this with the fact that all the entertainment companies and sports organizations who go hard left are now hemorrhaging viewers and money... Things are going to look a LOT different in the coming years.

And when you look at telecommuting destroying the need for an office... I'm happy I don't own any commercial real estate.

Seems that Dems are still stuck in the 90s with their understanding of law-and-order conservatism.

They immediately conflate "cops" with "conservativism," even though independents and conservatives have watched law enforcement stand down for Antifa and try to pull a coup on the President for being not-a-Dem. Nobody in Realsville automatically associates "law & order" with the Right anymore.

Having a Communist stooge stand up and say "but i wuz a prosekyooter derp-a-derp" will move zero votes on the right, and maybe a handful in the center.

But it'll move more of them on the Left where their own voters are also left behind in the long, long ago, and think cops all work for Louis XVI or some shit.

333 Still gonna vote the same way, but this time it'll be the right people.

Which is really a strange argument.

The "right" people they voted in destroyed the city and possibly the State.

The absolute worst person, literally worse than Hitler, to ever be voted in, brought incredible increases in productivity, prosperity and hope to a nation following the 28 previous years of centrally managed, controlled destruction.

So the argument is. Socialism, even when you personally vote in the "right" people, ends in utter destruction and misery. When the worst person - one who even terrifies Beezlebub by his personal evil, is elected President by Conservative/Ignorant rubes and hayseeds succeeds.

One would think that their standards for who is "right" and who is "wrong" should be suspect..

352 291 When I worked for Microsoft I used to love going to Seattle 3 to 6 times a year for meetings and work. Now... Well, even if I still worked there I would avoid any travel to the city. I'd planned to take a cruise out of Seattle later this year to Alaska but... Nope. Not even if Covid magically goes away, I will not spend one dime in that city anytime soon.

Ordinarily, I would be worried about leftists infesting new homes. But when New York falls and is reduced to territory status, the back of the Democrat party will be broken for decades. The problem can't actually be solved even with repatriation, but the number of executions can probably be limited to the elite. Hillary couldn't fill a high school basketball court, but somehow she won the popular vote. Yet that never seemed odd to anybody. I guess the dead and illegals just aren't motivated to see rallies, but they'll certainly get out the vote.

The mail in voting is going to be a debacle, which I'm sure they're counting on.

We can't roll over and let them tell us after several months of recounting that Biden won, (too bad he never lived long enough to find out).

435 I have not seen any mainstream (or even alt-) media analysis that links this migration to the Trump tax reforms. When the federal income tax deductions for "State And Local Taxes" (SALTs) went away, the payers in jurisdictions with high SALTs suddenly felt a new burden.

Previously, moving to a low-SALT area reduced the Federal deductions and, potentially, put some middle class taxpayers into a higher federal tax bracket. Now the amount of SALT in their budget makes no difference -- federally. But a low SALT lifestyle now means real savings on that tax situation.

445 "Derecho is a weather phenom I discovered here in southern IL this past Monday."

I've lived thru several in Northern IL. The best thing about a derecho is that the next day's weather is always glorious, fresh and fair. It blows all the bad energy out of the atmosphere for a while.

The second best thing about a derecho is, you can look at a mesoscale weather radar, and say with absolute 100% confidence "that's a derecho coming." You don't need to be a weatherman to tell which way the derecho is blowing.

The third best thing is that it boosts chainsaw sales, but that's good only for hardware stores. It's going to take me several days with a bow saw to clean up all the windfallen branches on my block.

I stopped reading The Economist as it had become a hive of poorly trained writers and reporters as well as it became a worthless rag.

For a rag that started in 1854, it is sad to see these venues go downhill.

539 For some reason I don't fully understand, the leftist/conservative dichotomy IS the urban-rural dichotomy. A map of population density correlates with leftist rule, culture, and politics 1:1.

It's a very strong correlation, and it's also one I have no direct plausible explanation for.

Psychologically, I've always been libertarianish-conservative. I'm also not a city-mouse. When I lived in giant mega-cities, there was a constant pressure in the back of my mind. It was incredibly stressful being that crowded and with that little privacy.

Many of my friends tried to describe the appeal of big cities, but I never really got it.

Fortunately, the swath that it took out was only about 30-40 miles wide, and may not have been much more than the eastern half of the state. But still, a very significant amount. Seed corn prices for next season will be high as well, as much Iowa's seed corn is grown in central and east central Iowa.

On the bright side, maybe it will help push for the elimination of ethanol blend fuel. Ah, who am I kidding. Our senators would be out of office in a heart beat if they voted against ethanol.
