New York Retail Chains Now Abandoning the City, Calling Business There "Unsustainable"

Cities used to be about commerce and industry.

But that's just a #WhitePatriarchy way of thinking.

In the #NewParadigm, cities shall be nothing but welfare delivery organazitions and stages for endless grievance rioting.

We'll see how that works out for them.

In the heart of Manhattan, national chains including J.C. Penney, Kate Spade, Subway and Le Pain Quotidien have shuttered branches for good. Many other large brands, like Victoria’s Secret and the Gap, have their kept high-profile locations closed in Manhattan, while reopening in other states.

Michael Weinstein, the chief executive of Ark Restaurants, who owns Bryant Park Grill & Cafe and 19 other restaurants, said he will never open another restaurant in New York.

...

Even as the city has contained the virus and slowly reopens, there are ominous signs that some national brands are starting to abandon New York....

J.C. Penney and Neiman Marcus, the anchor tenants at two of the largest malls in Manhattan, recently filed for bankruptcy and announced that they would shutter those locations.

One of the podcasters I listen to (Cecil Says) pointed out that companies have had a five month experiment in letting people work from home instead of making them come into offices.

Offices with very expensive floorspace.

This will probably go on for a few more months.

If it turns out the loss in productivity is smaller than the savings for not maintaining big office spaces, many companies might permanently abandon the large office.

What happens to New York commercial real estate then?

Meanwhile, retailers and restauranteurs are fleeing New York. One can imagine Shoppers Havens rising up in outlying towns.

New Yorkers will have to take a 90 minute car ride, or two and a half hour bus ride, to go to the stores. Like they do now when they want to go to Ikea.

Another pleasure of living in the city -- easy access to all the best stores -- will soon be gone.

And what happens to New York residential real estate after that? I spoke to a friend last night who told me that real estate in Rumson, NJ -- a tony suburb of New York -- is a gold rush market as everyone is buying houses to get out of New York City.

If many fewer people will be working in New York, and New York remains a diseased, riot-filled hellscape thus obliterating any social/pleasure reason to remain in New York -- what happens then?

These people are going to be abandoning the cities -- the cities that they themselves poisoned and killed with their socialist suicide impulse.

Unfortunately, they'll be swarming out of the cities to infect areas that aren't -- for now -- so dysfunctional and suicidal.

New Yorkers will mostly ruin New Jersey and Connecticut, which are hardly capable of being further ruined. (But give the hard left a chance...)

But they'll also be streaming to cities and states which are halfway functional, like Florida.

The locusts are coming.

15 I guess before the cities have to come to grips with - you know, basic things like governance, not being bloody corrupt, and being efficient, they have to learn things the hard way. Like what happens when the cities are run by governments that are overwhelmingly hostile to its own citizens and businesses.

Maybe this in the long run improves New York, but we'll see.

Can confirm. After an initial period of adjustment, Q2 production actually increased 4% when the entire staff was sent to work from home. In addition to all the things you list, Ace is the intangible flexibility that working from home offers, such as late hours or time to finish up projects on the clock where commutes and kids don't have to be planned around.

93 I posted something about this in the last thread but it went unnoticed with all the VP talk. I think this is why Cuomo and now Governor Baker are telling the towns to send the kids back to school. I think this is end of the lockdown. I think these blue state governors are starting to realize that nothing will change until the kids go back to school, there is less reason then for people to work from home, retail employees will now be able to go back to work because they won;t have to worry about child care. It is also obvious that remote learning is not working and parents making alternate arrangments could put teachers out of work permanently.
If it is safe for kids to go back to school, it is safe to open up the economy fully and then, maybe, these cities will see some return to normal.

Rent is not subject to the free market in NYC. Rent is based upon the prior lease, plus 10% vacancy fee. Rent never goes down in price here -- ever. And once rent controlled apartments have their long-term tenants die or leave, that apartment goes full 'market' value, jumping in price 200% or more.

I think we'll be seeing a lot of residential and commercial real estate companies go tits up. Of course, Kaiser Wilhelm will be happy, he'll use all that vacant commercial real estate for some sort of social justice bullshit.

But why? This deliberate expulsion of the middle classes, mostly but not exclusively White, makes no sense. Is the idea to make the cities become feudal in nature, with a wealthy, largely White gentry and mostly poor non-White peasants? The end game makes no sense.

185 If it turns out the loss in productivity is smaller than the savings for not maintaining big office spaces, many companies might permanently abandon the large office.
++++++++++++
I think this will happen. Regional hub offices with physical presence, and everyone within a state or two is anchored to it.

And if this happens, it is going to seriously change location dynamics. Suddenly, it doesn't matter where I live. The appeal of the cities is two-fold. On the personal side, you have a better chance of meeting a mate in the dating numbers game, and there are amenities like theaters, variety of restaurants, museums, etc. Those won't change.

On the professional front, though, it's a different story. The need for a massive human network - that is, a city - to drive job opportunities won't be nearly as big a deal. If this becomes normal, the cities will start to leak people. If you already have a mate, especially if kids are involved, moving someplace bigger and cheaper - even if it was economically non-diverse yesterday - will suddenly be appealing. I don't think it will lead to de-urbanization where everyone moves to 40 acres in small enclaves, but I think it could well drive out-migration from big cities and a redistribution to small and medium cities, all of which become much closer to each other in size.

One of the problems from "distributive" work outside cities and in the home environment is the loss of young, go go workers that come to cities to thrive and met other go go workers. Another type culture will need to take its place. Young people are:

1. Cheap
2, Work long hours - no family yet
3. Motivated - because other young workers and want to make career

If the city is clean, fun, and safe...it works. Otherwise, Skippy is going unloved, unmotivated, and sour in his mommy's basement.

You have to understand who our politicians are working for. 100 percent of the Democrats and 95 percent of the Republicans are being paid directly by Soros, Russia and China to do Soros's and those countries' bidding.

Our politicians don't give a shit about anything but being in power and getting rich, by any means necessary. If Biden is elected, we will never have a fair election ever again in America due to vote fraud.

Neither Russia or China or Soros can invade and destroy America, but it can be destroyed from within. Once we no longer have free elections, the UniParty takes over, and we are slaves working to pay taxes that are stolen wholesale by our politicians.

We're fucked if Biden is elected.

How about clothing? If most people do not need to dress up for work, what will that do?

I think the Democrats believe that, like with Obama, they can convince blacks that she's all down with the struggle and authentic despite being basically a laughing stock at first. But they have a lot less time and more social media resistance this time around.

This is true, but not for taxes. There are places in CA that would be fine, but that tax structure is untenable - and it's state wide. Yeah, you might not have the various local taxes, but even the state tax structures in a lot of the deep blue places are completely foul.

as some may recall, I've posted that I grew up in Phoenix/Scottsdale and loved it, still have plenty of family there. Everything is air conditioned, so you don't have to be in the heat if you don't want to. Here in Texas, it's been in the upper 90's every day for the last two weeks, and that's with about 90% humidity - so, you get used to it, and stay out of it.

In Phoenix there are so many swimming pools that you can stay in one all the time if you want. Look at new subdivisions from the air and you'll see almost every other house has one. That's how you get through the summer.

It's all gravel yards unless you're in the don't-even-ask-the-price neighborhoods. A lawn is sneered at by neighbors. Large shade providing trees are cut down the minute a house is sold. My hatred grows the longer I stay and now it gets worse with every minute that I watch my real home and any potential homes get destroyed by leftist politics. The politics here aren't that great. Maybe there's fight left, we'll see. I'll probably die here anyway, so I guess I'll be along for the ride, whether I want it or not.

Here are some of the must-have relocation criteria I've cooked up:

Electricity
Heating
Water
Sewer (don't want to mess with septic tank)
Internet
Basement / tornado shelter (if needed)
No flooding
Low taxes
Low maint house
Snow removal (if needed)
Stores within 25 mi
Healthcare and dental within 25 mi
Low crime
Unlikely to turn blue politically

I think cold places are probably better than warm places, to discourage certain demographics from moving there. So maybe ND or SD.

I'd happily settle for a trailer park, if it's in a good loc. I saw a great deal on a new trailer near Huron, SD, but when I google-earthed it, it's clearly sited in a floodplain.

404 Wyoming is windy and very cold for a lot of the year

The weather in Wyoming is not its strongest selling point, but its better than places further north and the place is one of the last few really frontier kind of places with that attitude toward the law and citizen responsibility. Its mostly "take care of yourself" without the One Big City ruining the state.

Missouri for example is a "leave me the hell alone" state but it has two suppurating sores that ruin the state for everyone else.

I had figured as much. Then you ride out into the desert and shot guns. Lots of guns. Lots of ammo through the guns (cleaning up after yourself, of course). Then you go ATVing. Then shoot more guns and camp out under the stars. Then go swimming in your pool.

Or you live in cook county Illinois, where I pay as much in property tax on my modest home as others pay for a place with a pool AND tennis court with a MCMansion attached. And the MC Mansion is cheaper than my house. And everyone wants to tell me how to live and how bad guns are and how we need to live as one big collective where Karen is in charge and Chad (or is it Ken?) is her subordinate he/him partner. And...

Well. Better stop typing and start drinking.

The thing with CA, even if it wasn't as messed up, is the cost of living. Looking at other states, I could cut my living costs in half. I could retire right now. But living in the bay area, a $150k annual salary is borderline poverty. I can sneeze and watch $50k float away.

Right now I'm paying for my mother's assisted living - which is borderline nursing in her condition. It's $6k/month, and that's cheap! A typical nursing home in the area starts around twice that. By the time I get old, I won't have 2 dimes to rub together.

Problem is, that most of the reasons majors cities were built, are no longer valid.

Sherman did indeed burn plantations from Atlanta to the sea - or

resistance he felt he would get from the locals, and I think he was
right in this as the South had begun to contemplate a guerilla campaign
at that point. I always thought that Sherman was the better general for
war than Grant - he seemed to understand that breaking the enemy's will
and ability to fight matter most - either way - they made for a pretty
dynamic duo.

Posted by: Boswell at August 11, 2020 06:48 PM (w2LAm)

that is true. I am not all in on the guerilla idea but what he did mattered. I said it was overrated because it was mostly unopposed. The tactical battle was over and that part was just doing it.

Looking back, a lot of it fit into Scott's original Anaconda Plan. What Sherman did mattered, there is no doubt there. But the CSA already suffered depredations like they did in the Shenandoah Valley. The key was Lee's army. Lincoln was always right about that.

That's the reason Sherman is still called the Father of Modern Warfare by the US Army.

as far as his Generalship, there's the interesting quote from Sherman himself about the two. He said, to someone interviewing him "Oh, I'm twice the General Grant is, we both know that, but Grant has got 10 times my nerve." Grant was renowned for never showing a hint of emotion no matter how terrible the circumstances were, and for being willing to take risks no other General would take.

The gun display case had little to offer. Some .22s. And anything else was over $550. Way over in a lot of cases.

So we went to an LGS.

The cupboard was bare. Some .22s. And some big caliber guns. And 2 glocks at more than full retail.

Wow.

For those that don't know, unless you tell your color printer to specifically print in black/white then it will use EVERY color to produce black. Printing black on a color printer uses more of the color ink/toner.

573 Grant and Sherman needed each other. Sherman always said he would be nothing without Grant. He considered himself to be a better tactician, but with much less nerve. He said Grant stuck with him when he was crazy and he stuck with Grant when he was a drunk.

Realistically though, there was no GOOD choice. The dems are so split and the chasm is too wide for any true crossover candidate to even exist. She is about as close as you can get to having cross appeal (but with tremendous cross unappeal as a result).

Tulsi would have been the most winning choice, even writing off the far left in the process. Though Tulsi is not establishment.

Through see seems to to the worst of a bunch of bad options.

577 I'm really looking forward to Trump's nomination acceptance speech at Gettysburg.

He's going to give a complete historical lecture on the evil DemonRat Party going back to the Civil War and he'll talk about how Blacks have been kept in chains by the Dems' policies, and how 2020 has been the Dems trying to start a second Civil War because they are pissed off at how an election came out, just like the Dems did in 1860.

Heads are going to explode. A second Trump term is the best chance for minorities in America to finally have a chance at real economic and personal freedom.

579 You've all covered the basics so well but the exodus of liberals will ruin all the outlying areas, no doubt about it.
Rioters and looters have feet and transportation, so the new growth areas just become ripe opportunities, not refuges from the madness.

Cross-state exodus has already ruined Colorado. Arizona and Texas are soon to be gone, especially since Texas is making a point of poaching business from California.

If it turns out the loss in productivity is smaller than the savings for not maintaining big office spaces, many companies might permanently abandon the large office.

What happens to New York commercial real estate then?

What are the chances that DeBolshevik is intentionally tanking the New Yawk City commercial real estate market just to try to crash Trump's holdings?

Do not go to the reservations. You won't need to and they don't want you there. They are "sovereign nations" and have their own tribal police so you just drive on through and you are fine.

That said, most of the actual people on the Rez are wonderful fine people. My beloved SIL is Lakota and a very fine man from a fine family. His family left the Rez when he was a baby and while they go back for family stuff, it can be a toxic place, just like any poverty stricken area.

A think she was first choice for President all along. That's why I picked her 2 years ago as the nominee.

Tulsi temporarily wrecked her, and so we get this rigged ticket; but everyone knows she is the Presidential candidate, in effect.

The big money is behind her.

And no Dem is going to care about what Tulsi said when she is running against a Republican.

601 States and cities should be allowed to limit the voting rights of those who move to town, unless they bting something of value, like a business, with them. You're going to continue to have great cities ruined by liberals fleeing the hell holes they've made, just to turn their new cities into hell holes. Worse is if you have a few hundred thousand imbeciles flee NY or CA to Florida or Texas, now you have the chance of changing those states in the electoral college.
