I was very disappointed to see she was seated today (normally she's standing up, in the back). My preference for her standing is entirely based on how it improves the sharpness of her questions. That's it, something like that.

Nice that she's wearing no mask, too. Not for the usual reasons, but for special reasons.

67 Not ALL the C19 stats are ENTIRELY garbage, or corrupted - but many of them are. They can and will be "rescued" and cleaned up, at some point (analyzed and various options given, as to which number to accept, given various assumptions).

But for now, the one to watch - because it's instant (no lags), and also pretty hard to corrupt (it's basically just piggy-backed on the long-standing/well established Influenza-Like Illness network), is the CLI (Covid-Like Illness) number.

It's what's reported when patients present at hospitals with certain symptoms. It of course predicts admissions (hospitalization for C19, or suspected C19), which also predicts acute case count, and, eventually death count. The ratios between the admissions and acute, and acute/ICU and death, vary between places and times, and are declining over time as well (totally normal and predictable).

But the CLI # is your trend. No way around it. "Cases" are not even close to being a meaningful indicator, for many different reasons.

CLI is crashing in recently "hot" states (i.e., locations that got their seasonally-determined outbreaks). Of course. There's a curve. They're all following it.

Anyway - crashing CLIs now = scarce ICU cases by late August = few deaths by early September. As inexorable as climate, or tides.

Cringing and laughing at the same time thinking about much of America contemplating their cancelled lives/seasons/schooling etc in mid-September, when the virus is basically over (endemic, low-level).

Personally I think any situation where humans and coyotes are living in too close proximity it means there are too many humans.

Posted by: BurtTC at August 10, 2020 08:27 PM (hku12)

87 coyotes are just "noble predators", like the "noble savage" humans. Their howls at night are "cute". It was cute when I saw mom run across a field and her 3 pups came out to greet her (from my woods) ... then I yelled and she took off one way as the pups returned to their den.

A few months later mom killed seven of my eight chickens ... I caught the last one on my security camera. I can"respect" what the coyote is doing, but I respect why farmers kill them off by the dozen, to protect their flocks of sheep or chickens. I plan to kill this coyote and the pups, which are now also stalking my new hens, no doubt. Some "circle of life thang" I guess ... and funny, as I type this, I just saw a groundhog on a security cam ... that digs up around one of my barns ....

kill kill kill is a large part of farm life ...but I like most of the wild life.

Dig a hole and put a 55 gallon drum in it. Put some fruit in it. Catch a rat. More rats come along. Food is gone. They eat each other to survive. Keep coming back. The last rat alive, you set it free.

That rat now has a preference for other rat meat and goes out to eat the rest of the population.

Repeat as necessary.

99 So I have to repeat how the boss and I enjoyed watching a baby otter and mom at the pier in Cayucos back in June last year.

Mom was diving and getting dinner off the pier pilings (shellfish), then returning and cracking them so junior could eat (the crack sounds were great).

Junior would frantically swim around and screech "Eeeee! Eeee!" every time mom dove.

In less entertaining news, got my .380ACP dies today. So now I'm ammo-independent, plus. That is, can reload all calibers I have guns for, and even for one I don't have (yet).

123 Coyotes are adaptable and have a decent reproduction rate, so they'll always be in proximity to people. Rural, and suburban areas.

I am assuming the best looking coyote I ever saw, which I haven't seen in a year, had such a beautiful coat because he was happily helping himself to pet food - and pets - all along the canyons here. This one was also, by far, the least skittish I've ever encountered. He'd only bolt over the edge into the canyon when I opened the sliding door, and actually stepped outside.

Most of my life, coyotes have been ugly, sad looking critters, kind of the street people of nature. I assume it was diet.

She had the back window down for the dogs to do the dog hanging the head out the window thing and when she pulled into a parking spot a coyote came out of the brush and jumped up and bit one of the dogs in the neck.

Adam Eve in the garden to dress it and keep it ... I like that notion ... man preserving a natural balance, but that can keep a healthy wildlife population of many species, done correctly.

Thinking on this subject in Africa ... do we need to let the lions or whatever, kill the cows and small children .. or do we end up with nature preserves? I think preserves will be the answer ... mostly like that already ... selective hunting funds the preserves.

All-cause deaths have actually been below average (nationally) except for a brief period, and below the CDC epidemic threshold most of this time. The "pull forward" deaths are almost certainly going to mean the annual #s will fall within recent averages. Sweden - notorious outlaw state for following conventional epidemic policies - will see a year that will be in the lower 10 of the last 20.

But as I said above, watch the "press" and the states as CLI #s continue to crash, in their train bringing down ICU census and deaths. Sadly with a country this dumbed down, they won't be compelled to be very creative in their attempts to maintain a 'skeer, but it will be darkly humorous to see what they do.

196 This place is full of coyotes, and much to my amusement, roadrunners.

Pisses me off, though that I'll see coyotes running through the fields as I drive down the roads here, and I can't do a damn thing about them, legally, even though I have a gun in my truck. Do I see them on the property? No, but I sure as all hell can hear them raising hell at night.

One night when I got home late from work, a coyote ran right in front of my truck as I entered the property. I about lost my damned mind. Had I any notice that was gonna happen, I would have blasted it to hell and made myself a hero to the nearby cattle ranchers.

I told this before.

I was driving down the hill to town I say one of the feral cats, the grey calico one, in the center of the road. Not moving. Down the road was a fox, also not moving. I waited a minute, then moved on. They both split off the road.

After errands, I was going up the hill when a fox ran in front of me. In it's mouth was a grey calico cat -- dead, and fox food to come.

214 Thinking on this subject in Africa ... do we need to let the lions or whatever, kill the cows and small children .. or do we end up with nature preserves? I think preserves will be the answer ... mostly like that already ... selective hunting funds the preserves.
Posted by: illiniwek at August 10, 2020 08:41 PM (Cus5s)

Selective hunting of lions is barbaric and evil. These are not "wild" lions being hunted, for the most part. They are captive bred, and then released so some jerkwad from the U.S. or Europe or wherever, can feel like a man.

There aren't enough preserves, and there are too many poachers, so the lions keep losing numbers year after year. Meanwhile, the "hunters" sell people on the idea that their revenue is best for everyone. However, where tourism is tried, it affords substantially more money than hunting.

The family Mustelidae consists of 59 extant species belonging to 23 genera and divided into hundreds of extant subspecies, as well the extinct sea mink, which is the only mustelid species to become extinct since prehistoric times. This does not include hybrid species or extinct prehistoric species.

Modern molecular studies indicate that the 23 genera can be grouped into 8 subfamilies. Some prior classification schemes divided the family solely between the aquatic otters and all other species.

Subfamily Guloninae (Martens and wolverines)
Genus Eira: one species
Genus Gulo: one species
Genus Martes: seven species
Genus Pekania: one species

Subfamily Helictidinae (Ferret-badgers)
Genus Melogale: five species

Subfamily Ictonychinae (African polecats and grisons)
Genus Galictis: two species
Genus Ictonyx: two species

273 Supposedly, areas are either fox or coyote areas. Seldom both.
We have fox in our wood, but have only seen two coyotes. One was the mangiest, saddest thing I ever saw (no shot) and the other one died from ennui and a 7mm.
I consider any meateater competition, and act accordingly... being higher on the food chain.

275 Coyotes are human smart. I hunt them every winter, I've got one hat but need another and my dad wants a pelt for his wall. The more hunting pressure you put on them the more they reproduce. In normal conditions a coyote will have one litter of two pups, under fierce hunting pressure they will have litters of four, occasionally two per year. It's a lose lose battle.

When people started poisoning them they had to find a way to slow the poison. A pack would find a pile of poisoned bait, Bob the coyote ate a piece and dropped over dead. The other coyotes wouldn't eat the bait cuz they knew it killed Bob. Around here it's almost impossible to call them in, they've responded to calls, seen humans in the vicinity and now associate calls with humans. We spot them with spotting scopes, sneak in and take a two or three hundred meter shot.

My House in South Denver was on a Greenbelt, and when I built, was the end of the built up section (eventually built further out).

Had a great argument with one of my neighbors, I told him to be careful, his dog was pretty small, and we had coyotes around. We could only have split rail fences with chicken wire for the fence facing the greenbelt.

He said, no, foxes.

Well, his daughters cat disappeared... and a couple days later a I got a great picture of the Coyote, hanging out on the path behind our houses... looking for something to eat.

Reason 1 why I had a 90 Lbs. dog.

A Weasel seized upon a Bat, who begged hard for his life. "No, no," said the Weasel; "I give no quarter to Birds." "Birds!" cried the Bat. "I am no Bird. I am a Mouse. Look at my body." And so she got off that time. A few days after she fell into the clutches of another Weasel, who, unlike the former, had a stronger antipathy to Mice than to Birds. The Bat cried for mercy. "No," said the Weasel; "no mercy to a Mouse." "But," said the Bat, "you can see from my wings that I am a Bird." And so she escaped that time as well.

There are lots of breeding farms, that train the young cubs to be cuddled and walked when they're young.

Usually when they get to be somewhere before age 2, they sell them off to the hunters. They're no longer cute, and they get testy with people as they come into sexual maturity.

I'm certainly not anti-hunting. But a lot of what is happening in Africa is not really hunting. It's shooting fish in a barrel.

As for the Chinese, they are paying top dollar for lion bones these days too. Turns out they killed off too many tigers so the switched over to lions. The rich Chinamen who think tiger bone gives them better erections, they buy the lion bones not knowing the difference between the two cats.

One of my favorite drives is at Hwy 12 at Randle, one town west of where you were at, take road 131 to Cispus Road aka FS-23, and onward to Trout Lake, maybe 40 miles of gravel road, and goes between Mt St Helens and Mt Adams.

Sure, but the only reason that would matter is if it was longer than a line of text a phone allows. Which would mean your cell phone can only read like this:

Four score and seven years ago

this continent, a new nation,
conceived in Liberty, and dedi-
cated to the proposition that all
men are created equal.

Is that true? Because I think I'd go nuts reading anything like that.

I have two big regrets. One is that I never found a good conservative man to marry. I dated lots of "bad boys" and some liberal wimps, but not men. (Bear in mind I lived in DC during my fertile years.)

The toughest regret is: I am not a mother. I will never get over the loss I feel over not having at least one child.

575 I live close to Sturgis. Here is what I know.

The city had a series of public meetings about whether or not to have the rally. Polls were taken, public input gathered. Basically it was decided that bikers would come no matter what and besides there are massive biker campgrounds like the Buffalo Chip who are their own Incorporated towns and they weren't shutting down so they might as well not even try to stop it. So, they passed ordinances about social distancing and sanitizing and whatever. Also some things like the daily public picture on main street were cancelled in order to protect the citizens of Sturgis. Governor Noem has left it up to the local mayor's and city councils to decide what, if any, mitigation effort they want to make. Deadwood has been a free-for-all since May and not much plague activity in spite of many predictions of death and disaster.

Hubby and I have been down to Sturgis a few times since last week. I'd say the crowd is about a third of its usual size.

Another note. Trump banners, signs, flags and booths are everywhere down there. In 2016 there was one big Hillary for jail booth and that was about it. Judging by this, I'd say Trump's popularity has increased considerably since 2016 in this crowd.
