Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

In spite of the massive damage the first lock downs did to the economy it's come back stronger than the left thought which is why they are freaking out and by magic the Flu Manchu numbers are spiking again and the left is screaming for more lock downs. It's all to have us in as a bad a shape economically as they can come November.

70 > I missed the president's presser. Is this the one from yesterday or did he have one today?

Yeah, new one.

1) Payroll tax holiday effective August 1, will be made permanent if he's reelected.
2) Eviction protection extended.
3) Student loan payment and interest deferral extended.
4) $400/week in extra unemployment benefits (down from the previous $600).

No "bread and circuses" gummint checks for everybody. He may not have the funding available to do that.

71 NGU, fugeddaboutit.

Osterholm's among the many "experts" who's been getting kicked around, often by "amateurs", for months now. Completely clueless.

But recall, the overall false framework governing all this and the bedrock for the destructive "interventions" still causing lots of damage - that this virus is super deadly and also can be controlled - remains that of the WH, courtesy of the "task force". Despite all previous history and actual science, and all experience since Feb.

And that framework - and apparently the Third World-style "state of emergency" rationalized by it, dramatic expansion of the welfare state, harsh curtailment of liberty, and de facto willy nilly destruction of private property and wealth - is firmly in place and the virus will disappear/go background-endemic and it will *still* be in place.

155 117 I'm so sick of masks.
The latest fashion statement at Seattle Cancer Care is face shields.
As if it wasn't already hard enough to hear people.
The staff, especially in teh infusion wing are all sporting them.
I did spot one woman wearing hers upside down. Once.
Once.

156 Had a run in with a Karen today. Actually a guy. We we standing in line outside for our coffee ordr- 6 ft from anyone, hubby wearing a mask. Hubby had his thumb hooked in the top of my hi-waist jean shorts. Guy behind got all offended...."Get your hand out of her ass-crack, gross!" We looked at each other "Whaa?" "She's (me) not even wearing a fvcking mask!" I laughed and said, "Ok, Karen." Then turned to hubby and said, "Actually I believe the male of the species is a Kevin." Then looked at the guy and said "Ok, Kevin." He sputtered and flung a lot of F words at us. As we walked away hubby said, loudly, "What a douche."

We didn't get conked, kicked, shoved or shot so I think we won.

The so-called "Siamese Twins Galaxy" will likewise be known only as NGC 4567 and NGC 4568.

It got me thinking that perhaps I ought to have some similar stickers printed up. My first thought was 'Defund Asheville City Council', but I've reconsidered. After all, the current City Council doesn't care about being paid, they only care about instituting Progressive Policy.

So, my thoughts now are about blanketing the city with stickers that say, 'DEFUND the Asheville Fire Department'.

I have asked people this question but they look at me and just tell me I need to keep people safe. But if the Karen is wearing a mask then they are safe. I understand about people not wanting to infect their loved ones-but I'll compare it to this scenario. Somebody in my congregation has heart issues, She is in her mid 80's. She's supposed to have a knee replacement because its bone on bone right now an she's in terrible pain, and the doctor said, "Well, you may die on the table-which is a risk with a lot of surgeries, but if it works out you should be just walk with a cane and not a walker." She appreciated his honesty. I said "Well, if you did die, you'd be very much missed because we love you, but you believe in the Lord, and know that he said, "I go to prepare a place for you."
She agreed. Some people in my congregation who have had several near death experiences have said they're not afraid of death, so I don't really understand people of religious faith who are so very petrified for themselves.

The least discussed aspect of the Left's jihad against our civilization is its war on the human spirit. This is why masks are so important. They are a marvelously simple, efficient and easily propagated method of de-individualization. To walk through a grocery store or any public place today is to occupy the mindspace of a dystopian tale, where the sparks of diverse humanity animating a unique genius loci have been slyly snuffed.

Feel fee to ignore my opinion -- I think I can handle seeing one more Kate Middleton pic every week, after the 10,000 Kate Middleton pix every day in the British tabloids. 10,000, 10,001 -- what's the difference?

It's sort of the same way I feel about the Supremes' "Stop in the Name of Love" and the Rolling Stones' "I Can't Get no Satisfaction." If I had heard either song for the first time ever, I'd say, "Hey, pretty good song!" But the local oldies station when I was growing up play those two songs about 15 times a day every day, and everywhere I went that oldies station was playing on some radio or other. By the time I was 12, I had heard those songs so many times that it became like the torture scene in The manchurian Candidate where they ply Benny Goodman over and over and over until the guy breaks, and confesses. Not that song again! Agghh!

The Gompertz function has a long tail and this one almost certainly does too, so there are probably "artifacts" and "shopcraft" in many of the numbers (factors in the reporting or definitions that affect the result), even the welcome ones. So the decline in reality is probably shallower than some numbers may imply.

And the 20% herd immunity number keeps being implied everywhere seroprevalence data is collected.

Other than Sams and Walmart I only go to businesses that don't require you to wear a mask.

I buy my ammo from the pawn shop instead of Academy sports or Cabelas even though it a bit more expensive because they don't require you to wear a mask.

I don't go to a restaurant that makes you wear a mask to go in the door but lets you take them off the second you sit at a table. They did that at my favorite Chinese buffet and we have not been back and I used to go there 3-4 times a month.

416 There was some famous preacher and evangelist who lived in the 1800's (whose name escapes me right now, but I think it was Charles Spurgeon) and as a young preacher he was warned about some woman who extremely quarrelsome, and he was told she was going to give him a tongue lashing the next time she saw him. He apparently said to himself, "Two can play at that game" and the next time he met her and she let forth verbal abuse he said, with a smile, "Oh, yes, I'm quite well, Thanks for asking."

This prompted her to accost her again at a higher volume to which he replied smilingly,, "Yes; It des look like rain doesn't it?"

"Bless the man. He's obviously as deaf as a post" the woman said. "There's no use storming at him." She never accosted him again, and he never told her what he had done.

I think it's a good story, and I think I might try that with the mask sheriffs using something completely irrelevant remark-but not about underwear, because I do wear that.

It's the classic example of how you tell the society is free. Old pictures of Portland show all sorts of boats, warehouses and businesses on the riverfront. Now it looks like archetectural drawing. Laurelhurst, Mt Tabor, Mississippi districts probably look fine. But the rot is there too.

Portland also has an awesome Japanese garden. I really loved that place!

546 I want to go to the Japanese gardens. Couldn't talk my husband into going. And now it's locked down.

547 I'm trying to like the 30s dress. I suspect a woman could pull it off. The mannequin lacks artfulness.

548 It's gorgeous, NotSoThoreau, and really worth the trip!

I hope you get to see it sometime.

550 Found this site on Reddit that tells you how you may have indirectly won against Magnus Carlsen. On Lichess I beat a guy that beat a guy that beat a guy that beat Magnus! Just punch in your Lichess handle.

551 I want to dispute your intermediate solution.
I don't see a sure win for white.
Consider these moves by black:
1. Rxb7 Bxc6
2. Pxc6 Qd7
3. Pxd7 Kxb7
Possibly continuing...
4. Qd5+ c6
5. Qxf7 Pxf3
6. Qxf3 Nxf2
7. Qxf2. Rxd7
... and you are facing a hard fought end game where black has a one point advantage.
