Guglielmi Lenin1.jpg

Portrait And Background
O. Louis Guglielmi

Social criticism via art is possible, and sometimes successful without destroying the quality of the work.

But this ain't it.

I actually like the piece, and were I a wealthy man I might consider purchasing it and then having the ridiculous portrait of Lenin removed from the painting.

The fact is, artists claim to have some heightened ability to express themselves on the canvas; and some of them are indisputably correct. But the political opinions of the artist are no more refined than those of the guy sitting next to you at a bar, having a shot and a beer after work. In fact, I would argue that Mr. Boilermaker on the bar stool has a better perspective on the working man than the effete artists who suckled on the government teat during the Great Depression, while many Americans struggled.

It's sad, because some of his other work is quite good, but in this case I guess he didn't trust his artistic skills enough to allow the work to speak for itself.

If I didn't know anything about this (and I assure you I don't) I would see the socialist/WPA style first, but then I'd note that the background from the title is rubble, ruin, and a dead body.

"Comrades! The insurrection of five kulak districts should be pitilessly suppressed. The interests of the whole revolution require this because 'the last decisive battle' with the kulaks is now under way everywhere. An example must be demonstrated.

1. Hang (absolutely hang, in full view of the people) no fewer than one hundred known kulaks, filthy rich men, bloodsuckers.
2. Publish their names.
3. Seize all grain from them.
4. Designate hostages - in accordance with yesterday's telegram.

Do it in such a fashion, that for hundreds of verst around the people see, tremble, know, shout: 'strangling (is done) and will continue for the bloodsucking kulaks'.

Telegraph the receipt and the implementation. Yours, Lenin.

P.S. Use your toughest people for this."

It's a lot like the Dems today are trying to say they are all for Law and Order and that it's Trump who is causing all the chaos.

58 I think - and this may just be me - that if you use art as social commentary, then photography, not painting is the best medium.

Painting just leaves it up to you to try and discern meaning. Photography sticks your face right into the problem and doesn't leave much room for doubt.

I'm always drawn back to the picture of the mother outside her tent during the dust bowl after the market crash. That look on her face leaves no room for doubt.

69 I don't like surreal landscapes though I suspect there is another name for this specific style bc it isn't actually surreal, just bizarre and jarring.

I am not convinced about our community interpretation this morning though, that this is a positive referendum on Lenin and Communism.

To the contrary, given where this dude is from (Egypt) and was raised (fascist Italy) and the time period (Stalinist purge era, the glory-is-gone Soviet time of woes while we here in the US are going through the depression), it seems the painter, who as I understand the situation disavowed his earlier mad depressive years and became an optimist, may have been having second thoughts about what Lenin's revolution had wrought.

Just my two cents ....

The funny thing about Communism is that they demand all people be cogs of the machine (state), ripping away self.

But the people at the top get to remain selfish, not cogs.

94 By 1900, Russia looked like it was developing the industrial and military backbone to dominate all of Asia. Lenin, over time, destroyed Russia more effectively and completely than 1,000 nuclear blasts could have done.

Maybe, but then the Russo-Japanese War hit in 1905. A lot of people doubted Russia's ability after that. Then the early days on the Eastern Front of WWI ended all doubt.

There's an art book out on Texas Post Office murals from the WPA period, and those are wonderful, especially the fact that a lot of them were done in small towns and only ever seen by the locals.

Communism is when Pride, Envy, and Wrath get together and design a political/economic system.

It's belief structure can be summed up thus: "I'm the smartest and most moral one, I should have the nice things and praise that others have, so I have a right to use force to strip them of those things and give them to the deserving - me."

Posted by: Someguy at August 12, 2020 09:54 AM (zNlHv)

We should point out that for almost all of human history, the two - church and state - have been synonymous. Western Culture is the *first* and *only* culture in history (with the possible exception of Cyrus the Great, but that's a long time ago) to put forth the idea that Church and State *must* be kept separate. And this was based on the Judeo-Christian ideal that All Men are Equal before God, and that a man's loyalty to God, and to his own conscience, stands above his loyalty to the State.

The State has never liked that, not in any of its incarnations, and has always struggled to stamp that idea out.

I think it's pretty ambiguous so I was going to see what the Moron Council decided. I think CBD has a decent argument, but so does the one that thinks it's a criticism of Communism. The portrait of Lenin is the key, tho. It's a good one, like CBD said. That's important. The artist joined the Army during WWII, so it's not anti-Americanist at least.

192 142 Perhaps you mean that the state is the church?

Or a big Trump win, and substantial gains in Congress, if the Republicans can be smart here (big if), then they have political credibility to pursue "justice" in these cases.

Otherwise, it looks like it's just political, and if the goal here is to stop these people from rising to power again, much could be gained.

Doing it in ANY manner that looks like it's just Trump going after HIS enemies, will likely backfire. With the end result being they regain their lost credibility.

In Christian Orthodoxy, a icon was placed high in a corner of the room. In Russia, this was sometimes a portrait of the czar. After the Revolution, pictures of Lenin (or Marx) were put in those places to symbolize the replacement of religion for Communism.

I didn't say otherwise. Surely, there were multiple considerations. But the fact that England was sort of protected - especially once air superiority was established - and the fact that the two lefties were fighting to the bitter death in Russia gave the US and England a lot of time to properly prepare and plan.

I've been saying for a while that the primary was mostly a fight about who owned the Democratic Party after a loss more than anything else.

Covid gave them some kind of hope that they could win. Then they tried to rile up the black vote because they knew they were losing the black vote. And now they're back to some level of acceptance that they're going to lose.

After Pearl Harbor, when the Americans got in the fight, Stalin IMMEDIATELY started bitching and moaning about there not being a second front.

He never let up until June of '44, when the Allies were strong enough to open a second front. Winning takes planning and timing. Just rushing in half cocked will get you killed, dead.
