36 A race track and an empty baby carriage. Add a country soundtrack and it's the story of my life.

Posted by: Ashley Judd at August 10, 2020 09:37 AM (2y4NB)

37 I can admire the artist's ability with shapes and some detail like the lines of the buildings, the curve of the roadway and the textures in the stone work. But the painting just leaves me going: "So what". I get no emotional sense at all. Smart makes Hopper seem ornate and effusive.

Posted by: JTB at August 10, 2020 09:37 AM (7EjX1)

38 Somehow this said Hopper to me. It has that 30s/40s fetish of industrialization going on. The house has hit hard times, that's not a real curtain in the window, someone just strung up a sheet.

The baby carriage is mesmerizing. It's daring you to come up with a story.

Hopper predates Smart. Both studied in Paris, but Hopper 20-30 years before. Ifk if Hopper was that influential in the 40s, he was still messing around with his impressionism (boats, lighter colors) in the late 30s). But they both obviously have similar art deco ish works which, I assume, like post modern lit were dark and achingly harsh to connote post-nuclear industrial existentialism.

Also, the factory manufactures prams, and the one pictured failed quality control inspection and so was set aside. The wind in front of the storm front blew it to the edge of the property.

134 Since the 100 mark is now passed, and few will see my comment on "populism" in the thread below...

We need to reject the premise. Populism is nothing but an authoritarian's fear-mongering slander of the concept of representation.

Should we, the citizens of a democratically-elected Federal Republic, fear the idea of our politicians doing the very things we voted them in to do?

It's preposterous.

It's all based on the fear that icky flyover country people will set the agenda, rather than DC insiders. The whole premise is wrapped around the authoritarian's conceit that he knows what is best for you, and that governmemt ought to follow his whims, rather than all of ours.

I think we should start at a lower level, by pruning a poison fruit that's hanging rather low right now.

Teachers don't want to go back to school, and there's a lot of people out of work. What if we could use one problem to solve the other, with a ton of salutary side effects? We can, and it won't cost us a penny more than we already spend.

Abolish public schools, give parents a voucher for what we would have spent on their children. The choice is now theirs - private or home school. If they home school, they keep the voucher.

With 2-3 children, the income from teaching their own kids would be greater than the second income of many middle class families, and greater than the primary income of many working-class families.

Most states already have rules and regulations surrounding home schooling, and plenty of support groups exist, so this isn't uncharted territory.

When controlled for every other factor, home schooled students outperform both public and private schooled students. We can give this advantage to everyone, help struggling families, and end the leftist stranglehold on education all at once.

That alone should be enough to justify it. But wait, there's more! The sudden exit of so many from the labor force, given this good-paying alternative, would set the labor market on its head. Demand for labor would suddenly outstrip supply, putting upward pressure on wages.

This shows a level of tool use and organization atypical for the primitive demography. In an anthropological sense, it's somewhat encouraging. I don't have a statistician on staff, so I can't give really hard numbers for anything except what an average family could make under the model - 12 to 20k per student, depending on district, less the cost of educational materials.

The rest of my statements are reasonable assumptions. Even after materials costs (tax deductible, IIRC), teaching 2 children would still pay as well or better than a lot of low-end jobs for a lot less hassle - no commute, set your own schedule, etc.

There are a lot more poor families with children than public school employees, so this should make for a net reduction in the unemployment pool.

And of course, destroying the teachers unions is the real prize.

That we'd provide better education for the same money is just the icing on the cake.

Tourist-hunters were routinely disparaged for their practice of shooting Chicagoans from trams and leaving their carcasses in the streets until it was observed that, contrary to the idealized view of Chicago natives being frugal and "using every part of the Chicagoan," native Chicagoans in fact killed each other indiscriminately and usually only extracted the tongue--considered a delicacy--for food.

We moved a many of our conferences to Chicago. It really has the potential to be one of the most beautiful cities. The lake makes a beautiful backdrop. When they finished the Magnificent Mile, etc. it made it better.

They've destroyed all that. Over the past few years people started noting the decline. We had one industry event left there, and now we were just notified that's moving.

It's a shame really. But reap what you sow. That's what people voted for- have fun and enjoy hell. Keep voting likes its a team sport, you guys.

347 Facts about COVID-19

https://bit.ly/3gJwcUF

(first 11 of 30)

-- According to the latest immunological studies, the overall lethality of Covid-19 (IFR) is about 0.1% to 0.3% and thus in the range of a severe influenza (flu).
-- For people at high risk or high exposure (including health care workers), early or prophylactic treatment is essential to prevent progression of the disease.
-- In countries like the US, the UK, and also Sweden (without a lockdown), overall mortality since the beginning of the year is in the range of a strong influenza season; in countries like Germany and Switzerland, overall mortality so far is in the range of a mild influenza season.
-- In most places, the risk of death for the general population of school and working age is in the range of a daily car ride to work. The risk was initially overestimated because many people with only mild or no symptoms were not taken into account.
-- Up to 80% of all test-positive persons remain symptom-free. Even among 70-79 year olds, about 60% remain symptom-free. About 95% of all people develop at most moderate symptoms.
-- Up to 60% of all persons may already have a certain cellular background immunity to the new coronavirus due to contact with previous coronaviruses (i.e. cold viruses). The initial assumption that there was no immunity against the new coronavirus was not correct.
-- The median age of the deceased in most countries (including Italy) is over 80 years (e.g. 86 years in Sweden) and only about 4% of the deceased had no serious preconditions. The age and risk profile of deaths thus essentially corresponds to normal mortality.
-- In many countries, up to two thirds of all extra deaths occurred in nursing homes, which do not benefit from a general lockdown. Moreover, in many cases it is not clear whether these people really died from Covid-19 or from weeks of extreme stress and isolation.
-- Up to 30% of all additional deaths may have been caused not by Covid-19, but by the effects of the lockdown, panic and fear. For example, the treatment of heart attacks and strokes decreased by up to 60% because many patients no longer dared to go to hospital.
-- Even in so-called "Covid-19 deaths" it is often not clear whether they died from or with coronavirus (i.e. from underlying diseases) or if they were counted as "presumed cases" and not tested at all. However, official figures usually do not reflect this distinction.
-- Many media reports of young and healthy people dying from Covid-19 turned out to be false: many of these young people either did not die from Covid-19, they had already been seriously ill (e.g. from undiagnosed leukaemia), or they were in fact 109 instead of 9 years old. The claimed increase in Kawasaki disease in children also turned out to be exaggerated.

There is a quaint and lovely tradition which I only know of in Massachusetts of having a place at dumps for stuff someone might want. In Chatham it's called the gift shop, in Scituate it's take it or leave it.

If you're throwing anything out that someone might want you put it in this area. If no one wants it it goes into general trash.

356 We used to go to Chicago once a year too. Usually after Christmas, hit the stores on MI Ave for sales. The cost of hotels spiked horribly the last time we went, and on top of that, they were charging $40/day to park our car. I still might have to go up there for work, but I'm never taking my family up there again. My favorite Chicago grift: the cops will write you a ticket if they see anything inside your car a thief would want. It's enticement, see?

In the past, people have discussed (here and elsewhere) a preference cascade, when enough people reaching a "critical mass" decide that something is so, then it starts happening.

What we have been blind to is how a preference cascade has been building through the academy (colleges) and student opinions being manufactured there, along with the growing BLM movement.

On the Left, a preference cascade has been building for years. Old line Democrats are dumbfounded, and think that they can control it. Fools.

The anarchist and violent Left preference cascade has arrived. This will grow and continue to grow, until it is confronted with violence and deadly force. You aren't going to argue these people out of their opinions and beliefs.
Be prepared. I believe that the Second Civil War is already here. Only one side now is actually fighting; the anarchistic and bestial Left. Given their way, they will burn out and wreck every city they can, and move into the outer neighborhoods and suburbs and threaten and destroy everyone they can.
Will anyone then organize and push back?

386 Pre 9-11 several airlines offered $49 round trip tickets to O'Hare from Detroit Metro , leaving on Fridays and returning on Sunday PM. My friends and I used to fly to Chicago, take a cab into downtown, stay at one of the hotels for $69 a night with three or four of us in a room and shop, eat, tour museums, etc. An entire weekend of fun(exclude the shopping) could be had for around $200.
The planes were full and were a hoot. Almost all younger or middle aged women, drinking , laughing, on the hour flight. I remember one lady standing up in her seat and rolling out an entire string of credit cards, which started a "who has more credit" contest with passengers.

If you had the time, you could Amtrak it for something like $10. Yes, ten each way.

Never did I think Chicago would become a war zone and Detroit would be the safer downtown to visit. ( Downtown Detroit is NOT a 'shithole" anymore). Having lived through decades of crime and decay, the mayor and police chief are not tolerating violence downtown. Where you hear about the shootings is in the poor neighborhoods outside of downtown.

I agree, they can't or at the very best won't. They are largely morons, bad kind, who have no idea what they are doing.

But the feds could put this down in a long weekend if allowed. We aren't talking about Mao's army here. Every night for months Andy Ngo has been putting pictures of the antifa scumbags arrested the nights before and they show the true quality of antifa. They are mostly a horror show of the dregs of society.

The far left has taken control of large parts of the Democrat party and driving it over the cliff. That's a big reason Joe's VP is taking so long. Will he put one of the radicals on his team or will he fall back on the establishment.

Unnecessary. There have been pictures released of the hundreds of large bags of ammonium nitrate that were stored there, and even pictures of a crew using a welder just a few feet away from them. Now that particular incident didn't set them off, but it's sign of how sloppy and haphazard their "safety" measures were.

not when they're destroying places I wish I could burn down myself.

just as 0bama had Biden to show him where the bathrooms were and how a bill becomes a law, Joe's VP will walk him to the toilet and show him how not to dunk his necktie in his soup

Definitely not. He has done some very good work but I strongly disagreed with his conclusion about Rosenstein a couple years and I think it's clouded his judgement. And I don't think anything he does is going to change what the DOJ is going to do or not do.

449 It seems the Chicago mayhem was triggered by a report of a 'police-involved' shooting of a minor.

The news outlets keep using this shorthand.

It was actually a 20 yr old guy that shot at cops first and was then shot himself. So basically a day that ends in Y in Chicago.

451 Guessing my quite liberal aunts will be making the trip north up here into the safe zone from their downtown Chicago condo. The shit went down not far from their place and the sound of gunshots probably wasn't part of the liberal utopia they expected.

This wasn't supposed to be happening on their side of town. Being a liberal in Chicago is the expectation that the rioting, looting and killing happens on the south and southwest sides.

Used to love going to Chicago on day trips or weekends...I think I'm just fine hitting parks and nature reserves in my red county.
